Search for the Jacobi Instability in Rapidly Rotating 46Ti* Nuclei

The possible existence of Jacobi shape transition in hot 46Ti at high angular momenta was investigated with the Giant Dipole Resonance exclusive experiments. The GDR spectra and the angular distributions are consistent with predictions of the thermal shape fluctuation model indicating elongated nuclear shapes.

Effects of isospin-symmetry violation on tests of the standard model using parity-violating electron scattering

The effects of isospin-symmetry breaking on the observables for parity-violating electron scattering are investigated within the framework of the nuclear shell model for 12C, 16O, and 28Si. Contributions due to mixing with low-lying states as well as admixtures of 1p-1h configurations (via the radial wave functions) are accounted for. It is found that isospin-mixing can be important, and the consequences regarding precision tests of the standard model are addressed.

A particle-number-conserving solution to the generalized pairing problem

An exact, number-conserving solution to the generalized, orbit-dependent pairing problem is derived by introducing an infinite-dimensional algebra. A method for obtaining eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the corresponding Hamiltonian is also given. The relevance of the orbit-dependent pairing solution is demonstrated by comparing predictions of the model with shell-model calculations.

Large-basis shell-model calculation of 10C->10B Fermi matrix element

We use a $4\hbarΩ$ shell-model calculation with a two-body effective interaction derived microscopically from the Reid93 potential to calculate the isospin-mixing correction for the 10C->10B superallowed Fermi transition. The effective interaction takes into account the Coulomb potential as well as the charge dependence of T=1 partial waves. Our results suggest the isospin- mixing correction $δ_{C}\approx 0.1 %$, which is compatible with previous calculations. The correction obtained in those calculations, performed in a $0\hbarΩ$ space, was dominated by deviation from unity of the radial overlap between the converted proton and the corresponding neutron. In the present calculation this effect is accommodated by the large model space. The obtained $δ_{C}$ correction is about a factor of four too small to obtain unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix with the present experimental data.

Estimating the nuclear level density with the Monte Carlo shell model

A method for making realistic estimates of the density of levels in even-even nuclei is presented making use of the Monte Carlo shell model (MCSM). The procedure follows three basic steps: (1) computation of the thermal energy with the MCSM, (2) evaluation of the partition function by integrating the thermal energy, and (3) evaluating the level density by performing the inverse Laplace transform of the partition function using Maximum Entropy reconstruction techniques. It is found that results obtained with schematic interactions, which do not have a sign problem in the MCSM, compare well with realistic shell-model interactions provided an important isospin dependence is accounted for.

Effects of angular momentum projection on the nuclear partition function and the observation of the giant dipole resonance in hot nuclei

Procedures for projecting angular momentum in a model describing a hot nucleus that takes into account large-amplitude quadrupole fluctuations are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the effect angular-momentum projection has on the observables associated with the $γ$-decay of the giant-dipole resonance (GDR). We also elaborate on which of the different projection methods provides the best overall description of the GDR, including angular distributions. The main consequence of angular-momentum projection is the appearance of an effective volume element in the integrals associated with the thermal average of the physical observables. This effective volume element is controlled by the value of the moments of inertia of the system. In the limit of rigid-body moments of inertia, the effective volume element is found to differ only slightly from the volume element associated with the normalization of the five-dimensional quadrupole oscillator wavefunction in the $β$, $γ$, and $Ω$ space, namely $D[α]=β^4dβsin(3γ)dγdΩ$. In the limit of irrotational flow moments of inertia, the leading behavior in the $β$ degree of freedom is $D[α]\propto βdβ$.

Mapping the proton drip-line up to A=70

Coulomb energy differences between mirror nuclei with $A \le 70$ are calculated within the framework of the nuclear shell model using an effective Coulomb plus isovector and isotensor interaction. Absolute binding energies for proton-rich nuclei are predicted by adding the calculated Coulomb shifts to experimentally measured binding energies for the neutron-rich mirror. The location of the proton drip-line is investigated, as well as candidates for the exotic decay mode known as di-proton emission. Taking into account the lifetimes of competing decay modes and limits imposed by experimental setups, it is concluded that the best candidates for the observation of correlated di-proton emission are $^{45}$Fe, $^{48}$Ni, and $^{63}$Se.

Behavior of the giant-dipole resonance in $^{120}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb at high excitation energ

The properties of the giant-dipole resonance (GDR) are calculated as a function of excitation energy, angular momentum, and the compound nucleus particle decay width in the nuclei $^{120}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb, and are compared with recent experimental data. Differences observed in the behavior of the full-width-at-half-maximum of the GDR for $^{120}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb are attributed to the fact that shell corrections in $^{208}$Pb are stronger than in $^{120}$Sn, and favor the spherical shape at low temperatures. The effects shell corrections have on both the free energy and the moments of inertia are discussed in detail. At high temperature, the FWHM in $^{120}$Sn exhibits effects due to the evaporation width of the compound nucleus, while these effects are predicted for $^{208}$Pb.

Isospin-mixing corrections for fp-shell Fermi transitions

Isospin-mixing corrections for superallowed Fermi transitions in {\it fp}-shell nuclei are computed within the framework of the shell model. The study includes three nuclei that are part of the set of nine accurately measured transitions as well as five cases that are expected to be measured in the future at radioactive-beam facilities. We also include some new calculations for $^{10}$C. With the isospin-mixing corrections applied to the nine accurately measured $ft$ values, the conserved-vector-current hypothesis and the unitarity condition of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix are tested.

Neutrino Capture Cross Sections for Ar-40 and beta-decay of Ti-40

Shell-model calculations of solar neutrino absorption cross sections for $^{40}$Ar, the proposed component of the ICARUS detector, are presented. It is found that low-lying Gamow-Teller transitions lead to a significant enhancement of the absorption rate over that expected from the Fermi transition between the isobaric analog states, leading to an overall absorption rate of 6.7 SNU. We also note that the pertinent Gamow-Teller transitions in $^{\sss 40}$Ar are experimentally accessible from the $β$-decay of the mirror nucleus $^{\sss 40}$Ti. Predictions for the branching ratios to states in $^{\sss 40}$Sc are presented, and the theoretical halflife of 53~ms is found to be in good agreement with the experimental value of $56^{+18}_{-12}$~ms.

Complete 0 hbar omega calculations of Gamow-Teller strengths for nuclei in the iron region

Gamow-Teller strengths for selected nuclei in the iron region (A~56) have been investigated via shell-model Monte Carlo calculations with realistic interactions in the complete fp basis. Results for all cases show significant quenching relative to single-particle estimates, in quantitative agreement with (n,p) data. The J=1,T=0 residual interaction and the f_{7/2}-f_{5/2} spin-orbit splitting are shown to play major roles in the quenching mechanism. Calculated B(E2, 2^+_1 -> 0^+_1) values are in fair agreement with experiment using effective charges of e_p=1.1e and e_n=0.1e.

Practical solution to the Monte Carlo sign problem: Realistic calculations of 54Fe

We present a practical solution to the "sign problem" in the auxiliary field Monte Carlo approach to the nuclear shell model. The method is based on extrapolation from a continuous family of problem-free Hamiltonians. To demonstrate the resultant ability to treat large shell-model problems, we present results for 54Fe in the full fp-shell basis using the Brown-Richter interaction. We find the Gamow-Teller beta^+ strength to be quenched by 58% relative to the single-particle estimate, in better agreement with experiment than previous estimates based on truncated bases.

Shell model Monte Carlo calculations for Dy-170

We present the first auxiliary field Monte Carlo calculations for a rare earth nucleus, Dy-170. A pairing plus quadrupole Hamiltonian is used to demonstrate the physical properties that can be studied in this region. We calculate various static observables for both uncranked and cranked systems and show how the shape distribution evolves with temperature. We also introduce a discretization of the path integral that allows a more efficient Monte Carlo sampling.

Demonstration of the auxiliary-field Monte Carlo approach for sd-shell nuclei

We apply the auxiliary-field Monte Carlo approach to the nuclear shell model in the 1s-0d configuration space. The Hamiltonian was chosen to have isovector pairing and isoscalar multipole-multipole interactions, and the calculations were performed within the fixed-particle, canonical ensemble. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the method for $N\neq Z$ even-even and odd-odd N=Z nuclei. In particular, static observables for even-even Ne isotopes and Na-22 compare well with results obtained from exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian. Response functions are presented for Ne-22 and compared with exact results, and the viability of cranked calculations for $N\neq Z$ even-even nuclei is addressed. We present methods for computing observables in the canonical ensemble using Fourier extraction, and for determining the nuclear shape.

Monte Carlo evaluation of path integrals for the nuclear shell model

We present in detail a formulation of the shell model as a path integral and Monte Carlo techniques for its evaluation. The formulation, which linearizes the two-body interaction by an auxiliary field, is quite general, both in the form of the effective `one-body' Hamiltonian and in the choice of ensemble. In particular, we derive formulas for the use of general (beyond monopole) pairing operators, as well as a novel extraction of the canonical (fixed-particle number) ensemble via an activity expansion. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the various formulations and ensembles and give several illustrative examples. We also discuss and illustrate calculation of the imaginary-time response function and the extraction, by maximum entropy methods, of the corresponding strength function. Finally, we discuss the "sign-problem" generic to fermion Monte Carlo calculations, and prove that a wide class of interactions are free of this limitation.

Monte Carlo methods for the nuclear shell model

We present novel Monte Carlo methods for treating the interacting shell model that allow exact calculations much larger than those heretofore possible. The two-body interaction is linearized by an auxiliary field; Monte Carlo evaluation of the resulting functional integral gives ground-state or thermal expectation values of few-body operators. The ``sign problem'' generic to quantum Monte Carlo calculations is absent in a number of cases. We discuss the favorable scaling of these methods with nucleon numb er and basis size and their suitability to parallel computation.
