On the statistical theory of strong electrolytes and high-temperature plasmas: new applications of the work of Yukhnovskii and Kelbg

Remembering here the work of two pioneers of the statistical physics of Coulomb systems, G\"unter Kelbg, and Ihor Yukhnovskii, we analyze their methods and give some new applications to ionic solutions and quantum plasmas. In particular, we develop applications of the theory to strong electrolytes and to thermal high-temperature plasmas at $T > 0^5$ K using the exponential interaction model. We show the strong structural similarity of these two classes of Coulomb systems, which physics is determined mostly by contributions proportional to $e^4$ and $e^6$. We predict at higher densities a structural transition to oscillating correlations. The thermodynamic functions show a smooth transition from a quadratic root increase to a slower increase like $n_i^{1/4}$ which observes the Onsager bound. Effects of asymmetries in charges and masses are studied with applications to ionic systems with multiple charges and to high-temperature plasmas, in particular, to plasmas with He$^{2+}$-ions.

Statistical theory of charged particle systems including triple bound states -- and the Collaboration Lviv-Rostock

Honoring the hundredth anniversary of the birthday of Ihor R. Yuknovskii we analyze new developments in the statistical thermodynamics of Coulomb systems. The basic idea of this work is to demonstrate that the exponential potential used in the first papers of Yukhnovskii is an appropriate reference system for a description of classical and quantum charged particle systems. We briefly discuss the collaboration between the groups of Ihor R. Yuknovskii in Lviv and G\"unter Kelbg in Rostock and analyze several approaches based on pair correlation functions and cluster expansion in the classical as well as in the quantum case. Finally, we discuss the progress in the statistical description of bound states of three particles as in helium plasmas and in MgCl$_2$-solutions in the classical case and present new results regarding the influence of three-particle bound states. In particular, we give new expressions for the cluster integrals and the mass action functions of helium atoms and ionic triple associates as well as for the equation of state (EoS).

Statistical theory of individual activity coefficients of electrolytes including multiple ionic charges

In previous work we developed a new statistical method for calculating the individual activities of ions including the association of ions. Here we study multi-particle electrostatic interactions connected within higher cluster integrals and identify the ionization constants of the mass action law of associating ion clusters. In contrast to Bjerrum and Fuoss, our concept of association is not based on spatial criteria, but instead on the strength of interaction measured in powers of the Bjerrum parameter ($e^2 / D_0 k_{\text{B}} T a$ ; $a$ is contact) and defined by asymptotic properties of the cluster integrals. For ion pair formation our mass action constant is the classical counterpart of Planck's famous hydrogenic partition function. As a rule, the new association constants are smaller than traditional expressions, e.g., by Fuoss and Kraus, in the interesting regions of interaction parameters about fifty percent. Several examples including CaCl$_2$, MgCl$_2$, Na$_2$SO$_4$, K$_2$SO$_4$, LaCl$_3$ and a model of seawater are studied. For several associating electrolytes and seawater, reasonable agreement with experiments and Monte Carlo results is achieved.

Energy conversion in isothermal nonlinear irreversible processes - struggling for higher efficiency

First we discuss some early work of Ulrike Feudel on structure formation in nonlinear reactions including ions and the efficiency of the conversion of chemical into electrical energy. Then we give some survey about energy conversion from chemical to higher forms of energy like mechanical, electrical and ecological energy. We consider examples of energy conversion in several natural processes and in some devices like fuel cells. Further, as an example, we study analytically the dynamics and efficiency of a simple "active circuit" converting chemical into electrical energy and driving currents which is roughly modeling fuel cells. Finally we investigate an analogous ecological system of Lotka - Volterra type consisting of an "active species" consuming some passive "chemical food". We show analytically for both these models that the efficiency increases with the load, reaches values higher then 50 percent in a narrow regime of optimal load and goes beyond some maximal load abrupt to zero.

Analysis of linear and nonlinear conductivity of plasma-like systems on the basis of the Fokker-Planck equation

The problems of high linear conductivity in an electric field, as well as nonlinear conductivity, are considered for plasma-like systems. First, we recall several observations of nonlinear fast charge transport in dusty plasma, molecular chains, lattices, conducting polymers and semiconductor layers. Exploring the role of noise we introduce the generalized Fokker-Planck equation. Second, one-dimensional models are considered on the basis of the Fokker-Planck equation with active and passive velocity-dependent friction including an external electrical field. On this basis it is possible to find the linear and nonlinear conductivities for electrons and other charged particles in a homogeneous external field. It is shown that the velocity dependence of the friction coefficient can lead to an essential increase of the electron average velocity and the corresponding conductivity in comparison with the usual model of constant friction, which is described by the Drude-type conductivity. Applications including novel forms of controlled charge transfer and non-Ohmic conductance are discussed.

On the quantum statistics of bound states within the Rutherford model of matter

The quantum statistical treatment of the Rutherford model, considering matter as a system of point charges (electrons and nuclei) is analyzed. First, in the historical context, the solutions of different fundamental problems, such as the divergence of the partition function, elaborated by Herzfeld, Planck, Brillouin and Rompe - most of the relevant papers published in the Annalen der Physik, are discussed. Beyond this, the modern state of art is presented and new results are given which explain, why bound states according to a discrete part of the spectra occur only in a valley in the temperature-density plane. Based on the actual state of the quantum statistics of Coulomb systems, virial expansions within the canonical ensemble and the grand ensemble and combinations are derived. The following transitions along isotherms are studied: (i) the formation of bound states occurring by increasing the density from low to moderate values, (ii) the disappearance of bound state effects at higher densities due to medium effects. Within the physical picture we calculate isotherms of pressure for Hydrogen in a broad density region and show that in the region between $20\, 000$ K and $100\, 000$ K and particle densities below $10^{22}$ cm$^{-3}$ the cross-over from full to partial ionization may be well described by the contributions of extended ring diagrams and ladder diagrams.

Electron Pairing and Coulomb Repulsion in One-Dimensional Anharmonic Lattices

We show that in anharmonic one-dimensional crystal lattices pairing of electrons or holes in a localized bisolectron state is possible due to coupling between the charges and the lattice deformation that can overcompensate the Coulomb repulsion. Such localized soliton-like states appear as traveling ground bound singlet states of two extra electrons in the potential well created by the local lattice deformation. We also find the first excited localized state of two electrons in a soliton-like lattice deformation potential well given by a triplet state of two electrons. The results of the analytical study of interacting electrons in a lattice with cubic anharmonicity are compared with the numerical simulations of two electrons in an anharmonic lattice taking into account of the (local) Hubbard electron-electron repulsion. We qualitative agreement between both approaches for a broad interval of parameter values. For illustration we give expressions for the bisolectron binding energy with parameter values that are typical for biological macromolecules. We estimate critical values of Coulomb repulsion where the bisolectron becomes unbound.

Bound States in Coulomb Systems - Old Problems and New Solutions

We analyze the quantum statistical treatment of bound states in Hydrogen considered as a system of electrons and protons. Within this physical picture we calculate isotherms of pressure for Hydrogen in a broad density region and compare to some results from the chemical picture. First we resume in detail the two transitions along isotherms : (i) the formation of bound states occurring by increasing the density from low to moderate values, (ii) the destruction of bound states in the high density region, modelled here by Pauli-Fock effects. Avoiding chemical models we will show, why bound states according to a discrete part of the spectra occur only in a valley in the T-p plane. First we study virial expansions in the canonical ensemble and then in the grand canonical ensemble. We show that in fugacity representations the population of bound states saturates at higher density and that a combination of both representations provides quickly converging equations of state. In the case of degenerate systems we calculated first the density-dependent energy levels, and find the pressure in Hartree-Fock-Wigner approximation showing the prominent role of Pauli blocking and Fock effects in the selfenergy.

Quartic Lattice Interactions, Soliton-like Excitations and Electron Pairing in One-Dimensional Anharmonic Crystals

We show that two added, excess electrons with opposite spins in one-dimensional crystal lattices with quartic anharmonicity may form a bisolectron, which is a localized bound state of the paired electrons to a soliton-like lattice deformation. It is also shown that when the Coulomb repulsion is included, the wave function of the bisolectron has two maxima, and such a state is stable in lattices with strong enough electron-(phonon/soliton) lattice coupling. Furthermore the energy of the bisolectron is shown to be lower than the energy of the state with two separate, independent electrons, as even with account of the Coulomb repulsion the bisolectron binding energy is positive

Identity of electrons and ionization equilibrium

It is perhaps appropriate that, in a year marking the 90th anniversary of Meghnad Saha seminal paper (1920), new developments should call fresh attention to the problem of ionization equilibrium in gases. Ionization equilibrium is considered in the simplest "physical" model for an electronic subsystem of matter in a rarefied state, consisting of one localized electronic state in each nucleus and delocalized electronic states considered as free ones. It is shown that, despite the qualitative agreement, there is a significant quantitative difference from the results of applying the Saha formula to the degree of ionization. This is caused by the fact that the Saha formula corresponds to the "chemical" model of matter.

On Electron Pairing in One-Dimensional Anharmonic Crystal Lattices

We show that when anharmonicity is added to the electron-phonon interaction it facilitates electron pairing in a localized state. Such localized state appears as singlet state of two electrons bound with the traveling local lattice soliton distortion which survives when Coulomb repulsion is included.

Static and Dynamic Structure Factors with Account of the Ion Structure for High-temperature Alkali and Alkaline Earth Plasmas

The $e-e$, $e-i$, $i-i$ and charge-charge static structure factors are calculated for alkali and Be$^{2+}$ plasmas using the method described by Gregori et al. in \cite{bibGreg2006}. The dynamic structure factors for alkali plasmas are calculated using the method of moments \cite{bibAdam83}, \cite{bibAdam93}. In both methods the screened Hellmann-Gurskii-Krasko potential, obtained on the basis of Bogolyubov's method, has been used taking into account not only the quantum-mechanical effects but also the ion structure \cite{bib73}. On anomalous diffusion in a plasma in velocity space

The problem of anomalous diffusion in momentum space is considered for plasma-like systems on the basis of a new collision integral, which is appropriate for consideration of the probability transition function (PTF) with long tails in momentum space. The generalized Fokker-Planck equation for description of diffusion (in momentum space) of particles (ions, grains etc.) in a stochastic system of light particles (electrons, or electrons and ions, respectively) is applied to the evolution of the momentum particle distribution in a plasma. In a plasma the developed approach is also applicable to the diffusion of particles with an arbitrary mass relation, due to the small characteristic momentum transfer. The cases of an exponentially decreasing in momentum space (including the Boltzmann-like) kernel in the PT-function, as well as the more general kernels, which create the anomalous diffusion in velocity space due to the long tail in the PT-function, are considered. Effective friction and diffusion coefficients for plasma-like systems are found.

The influence of Pauli blocking effects on the properties of dense hydrogen

We investigate the effects of Pauli blocking on the properties of hydrogen at high pressures, where recent experiments have shown a transition from insulating behavior to metal-like conductivity. Since the Pauli principle prevents multiple occupation of electron states (Pauli blocking), atomic states disintegrate subsequently at high densities (Mott effect). We calculate the energy shifts due to Pauli blocking and discuss the Mott effect solving an effective Schroedinger equation for strongly correlated systems. The ionization equilibrium is treated on the basis of a chemical approach. Results for the ionization equilibrium and the pressure in the region 4.000 K < T < 20.000 K are presented. We show that the transition to a highly conducting state is softer than found in earlier work. A first order phase transition is observed at T < 6.450 K, but a diffuse transition appears still up to 20.000 K.

On indices of 1-forms on determinantal singularities

We consider 1-forms on, so called, essentially isolated determinantal singularities (a natural generalization of isolated ones), show how to define analogues of the Poincaré--Hopf index for them, and describe relations between these indices and the radial index. For isolated determinantal singularities, we discuss properties of the homological index of a holomorphic 1-form and its relation with the Poincaré--Hopf index.

An algebraic formula for the index of a vector field on an isolated complete intersection singularity

Let (V,0) be a germ of a complete intersection variety in \CC^{n+k}, n>0, having an isolated singularity at 0 and X be the germ of a holomorphic vector field on \CC^{n+k} tangent to V and having on V an isolated zero at 0. We show that in this case the homological index and the GSV-index coincide. In the case when the zero of X is also isolated in the ambient space \CC^{n+k} we give a formula for the homological index in terms of local linear algebra.

Radial index and Euler obstruction of a 1-form on a singular variety

A notion of the radial index of an isolated singular point of a 1-form on a singular (real or complex) variety is discussed. For the differential of a function it is related to the Euler characteristic of the Milnor fibre of the function. A connection between the radial index and the local Euler obstruction of a 1-form is described. This gives an expression for the local Euler obstruction of the differential of a function in terms of Euler characteristics of some Milnor fibres.

Temperature-dependent quantum pair potentials and their application to dense partially ionized hydrogen plasmas

Extending our previous work \cite{filinov-etal.jpa03ik} we present a detailed discussion of accuracy and practical applications of finite-temperature pseudopotentials for two-component Coulomb systems. Different pseudopotentials are discussed: i) the diagonal Kelbg potential, ii) the off-diagonal Kelbg potential iii) the {\em improved} diagonal Kelbg potential, iv) an effective potential obtained with the Feynman-Kleinert variational principle v) the ``exact'' quantum pair potential derived from the two-particle density matrix. For the {\em improved} diagonal Kelbg potential a simple temperature dependent fit is derived which accurately reproduces the ``exact'' pair potential in the whole temperature range. The derived pseudopotentials are then used in path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to obtain thermodynamical properties of strongly coupled hydrogen. It is demonstrated that classical MD simulations with spin-dependent interaction potentials for the electrons allow for an accurate description of the internal energy of hydrogen in the difficult regime of partial ionization down to the temperatures of about $60 000$ K. Finally, we point out an interesting relation between the quantum potentials and effective potentials used in density functional theory.
