Deuteron disintegration in three dimensions

We compare results from the traditional partial wave treatment of deuteron electro-disintegration with a new approach that uses three dimensional formalism. The new framework for the two-nucleon (2N) system using a complete set of isospin - spin states made it possible to construct simple implementations that employ a very general operator form of the current operator and 2N states.

A Three-Dimensional Treatment of the Three-Nucleon Bound State

Recently a formalism for a direct treatment of the Faddeev equation for the three-nucleon bound state in three dimensions has been proposed. It relies on an operator representation of the Faddeev component in the momentum space and leads to a finite set of coupled equations for scalar functions which depend only on three variables. In this paper we provide further elements of this formalism and show the first numerical results for chiral NNLO nuclear forces.

Different Methods for the Two-Nucleon T-Matrix in the Operator Form

We compare three methods to calculate the nucleon-nucleon t-matrix based on the three-dimensional formulation of J. Golak et al., Phys. Rev. C 81, 034006, (2010). In the first place we solve a system of complex linear inhomogeneous equations directly for the t-matrix. Our second method is based on iterations and a variant of the Lanczos algorithm. In the third case we obtain the t-matrix in two steps, solving a system of real linear equations for the k-matrix expansion coefficients and then solving an on-shell equation, which connects the scalar coefficients of the k- and t-matrices. A very good agreement among the three methods is demonstrated for selected nucleon-nucleon scattering observables using a chiral next-to-next-to-leading-order neutron-proton potential. We also apply our three-dimensional framework to the demanding problem of proton-proton scattering, using a corresponding version of the nucleon-nucleon potential and supplementing it with the (screened) Coulomb force, taken also in the three-dimensional form. We show converged results for two different screening functions and find a very good agreement with other methods dealing with proton-proton scattering.

Dineutron and the three-nucleon continuum observables

We investigate how strong a hypothetical 1S0 bound state of two neutrons would affect different observables in the neutron-deuteron reactions. To that aim we extend our momentum space scheme of solving three-nucleon Faddeev equations to incorporate in addition to the deuteron also the 1S0 dineutron bound state. We discuss effects induced by dineutron on the angular distribution of the neutron-deuteron elastic scattering and cross sections of the deuteron breakup. A comparison to the available data for neutron-deuteron total cross sections and elastic scattering angular distributions cannot decisively exclude a possibility that the two neutrons can form 1S0 bound state. However, the strong modifications of a final-state-interaction peak of the neutron-deuteron breakup when changing from negative to positive values of the neutron-neutron scattering length seems to exclude existence of dineutron.

The triton with long-range chiral N3LO three nucleon forces

Long-range contributions to the three-nucleon force that have been recently worked out in chiral effective field theory at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order are for the first time included in the triton and the doublet nucleon-deuteron scattering length calculations. The strengths of the two short-range terms available at this order in the chiral expansion are determined from the triton binding energy and the neutron-deuteron doublet scattering length. The structure of the resulting three-nucleon force is explored and effects for the two-nucleon correlation function in the triton are investigated. Expectation values of the individual contributions to the three-nucleon force in the triton are found to be in the range from a few 100 keV to about 1 MeV. Our study demonstrates that the very complicated operator structure of the novel chiral three-nucleon forces can be successively implemented in three-nucleon Faddeev calculations.

On a translationally invariant nuclear single particle picture

If one assumes a translationally invariant motion of the nucleons relative to the c. m. position in single particle mean fields a correlated single particle picture of the nuclear wave function emerges. A single particle product ansatz leads for that Hamiltonian to nonlinear equations for the single particle wave functions. In contrast to a standard not translationally invariant shell model picture those single particle s-, p- etc states are coupled. The strength of the resulting coupling is an open question. The Schroedinger equation for that Hamiltonian can be solved by few- and many -body techniques, which will allow to check the validity or non-validity of a single particle product ansatz. Realistic nuclear wave functions exhibit repulsive 2-body short range correlations. Therefore a translationally invariant single particle picture -- if useful at all -- can only be expected beyond those ranges. Since exact A = 3 and 4 nucleon ground state wave functions and beyond based on modern nuclear forces are available, the translationally invariant shell model picture can be optimized by an adjustment to the exact wave function and its validity or non-validity decided.

Momentum-space 3N Faddeev calculations of hadronic and electromagnetic reactions with proton-proton Coulomb and three-nucleon forces included

We extend our approach to incorporate the proton-proton (pp) Coulomb force into the three-nucleon (3N) momentum-space Faddeev calculations of elastic proton-deuteron (pd) scattering and breakup to the case when also a three-nucleon force (3NF) is acting. In addition we formulate that approach in the application to electron- and gamma-induced reactions on 3He. The main new ingredient is a 3-dimensional screened pp Coulomb t-matrix obtained by a numerical solution of a 3-dimensional Lippmann-Schwinger equation (LSE). The resulting equations have the same structure as the Faddeev equations which describe pd scattering without 3NF acting. That shows the practical feasibility of both presented formulations.

The nn quasi-free nd breakup cross section: discrepancies to theory and implications on the 1S0 nn force

Large discrepancies between quasi-free neutron-neutron (nn) cross section data from neutron-deuteron (nd) breakup and theoretical predictions based on standard nucleon-nucleon (NN) and three-nucleon (3N) forces are pointed out. The nn 1S0 interaction is shown to be dominant in that configuration and has to be increase to bring theory and data into agreement. Using the next-to-leading order (NLO) 1S0 interaction of chiral perturbation theory (chiPT) we demonstrate that the nn QFS cross section only slightly depends on changes of the nn scattering length but is very sensitive to variations of the effective range parameter. In order to account for the reported discrepancies one must decrease the nn effective range parameter by about 12 % from its value implied by 19charge symmetry and charge independence of nuclear forces.

Treatment of Two Nucleons in Three Dimensions

We extend a new treatment proposed for two-nucleon (2N) and three-nucleon (3N) bound states to 2N scattering. This technique takes momentum vectors as variables, thus, avoiding partial wave decomposition, and handles spin operators analytically. We apply the general operator structure of a nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential to the NN T-matrix, which becomes a sum of six terms, each term being scalar products of spin operators and momentum vectors multiplied with scalar functions of vector momenta. Inserting this expansions of the NN force and T-matrix into the Lippmann-Schwinger equation allows to remove the spin dependence by taking traces and yields a set of six coupled equations for the scalar functions found in the expansion of the T-matrix.

3N Scattering in a Three-Dimensional Operator Formulation

A recently developed formulation for a direct treatment of the equations for two- and three-nucleon bound states as set of coupled equations of scalar functions depending only on vector momenta is extended to three-nucleon scattering. Starting from the spin-momentum dependence occurring as scalar products in two- and three-nucleon forces together with other scalar functions, we present the Faddeev multiple scattering series in which order by order the spin-degrees can be treated analytically leading to 3D integrations over scalar functions depending on momentum vectors only. Such formulation is especially important in view of awaiting extension of 3N Faddeev calculations to projectile energies above the pion production threshold and applications of chiral perturbation theory 3N forces, which are to be most efficiently treated directly in such three-dimensional formulation without having to expand these forces into a partial wave basis.

On the ill-posed character of the Lorentz integral transform

An exact inversion formula for the Lorentz integral transform (LIT) is provided together with the spectrum of the LIT kernel. The exponential increase of the inverse Fourier transform of the LIT kernel entering the inversion formula explains the ill-posed character of the LIT approach. Also the continuous spectrum of the LIT kernel, which approaches zero points necessarily to the same defect. A possible cure is discussed and numerically illustrated.

Poincare Invariant Three-Body Scattering

Relativistic Faddeev equations for three-body scattering are solved at arbitrary energies in terms of momentum vectors without employing a partial wave decomposition. Relativistic invariance is incorporated withing the framework of Poincaré invariant quantum mechanics. Based on a Malfliet-Tjon interaction, observables for elastic and breakup scattering are calculated and compared to non-relativistic ones.

A Realistic Formalism for 4N Bound State in a Three-Dimensional Yakubovsky Scheme

A spin-isospin dependent Three-Dimensional formalism based on the momentum vectors for the four-nucleon bound state is presented. The four-nucleon Yakubovsky equations with two- and three-nucleon interactions are formulated as a function of the vector Jacobi momenta. Our formalism, according to the number of spin-isospin states that one takes into account, leads to only a strictly finite number of the coupled three-dimensional integral equations to be solved. The evaluation of the transition and permutation operators as well as the coordinate transformations due to considering the continuous angle variables instead of the discrete angular momentum quantum numbers are less complicated in comparison with partial wave representation. With respect to partial wave the present formalism with the smaller number of equations leads to higher dimensionality of the integral equations. We have concluded that Three-Dimensional formalism is less cumbersome for considering the three-nucleon forces.

Lorentz Boosted Nucleon-Nucleon T-matrix and the Triton Binding Energy

The phase equivalent relativistic NN potential, which is related by a nonlinear equation to the original nonrelativistic potential, is used to construct the mass operator (rest Hamiltonian) of the 3-nucleon system. Employing the CD Bonn NN potential, the solution of the relativistic 3N Faddeev equation for $^3$H shows slightly less binding energy than the corresponding nonrelativistic result. The effect of the Wigner spin rotation on the binding is very small.

A New Approach to the 3D Faddeev Equation for Three-Body Scattering

A novel approach to solve the Faddeev equation for three-body scattering at arbitrary energies is proposed. This approach disentangles the complicated singularity structure of the free three-nucleon propagator leading to the moving and logarithmic singularities in standard treatments. The Faddeev equation is formulated in momentum space and directly solved in terms of momentum vectors without employing a partial wave decomposition. In its simplest form the Faddeev equation for identical bosons, which we are using, is an integral equation in five variables, magnitudes of relative momenta and angles. The singularities of the free propagator and the deuteron propagator are now both simple poles in two different momentum variables, and thus can both be integrated with standard techniques.

A new form of three-body Faddeev equations in the continuum

We propose a novel approach to solve the three-nucleon (3N) Faddeev equation which avoids the complicated singularity pattern going with the moving logarithmic singularities of the standard approach. In this new approach the treatment of the 3N Faddeev equation becomes essentially as simple as the treatment of the two-body Lippmann-Schwinger equation. Very good agreement of the new and old approaches in the application to nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering and the breakup reaction is found.

Faddeev and Glauber Calculations at Intermediate Energies in a Model for n+d Scattering

Obtaining cross sections for nuclear reactions at intermediate energies based on the Glauber formulation has a long tradition. Only recently the energy regime of a few hundred MeV has become accessible to ab-initio Faddeev calculations of three-body scattering. In order to go to higher energies, the Faddeev equation for three-body scattering is formulated and directly solved without employing a partial wave decomposition. In the simplest form the Faddeev equation for interacting scalar particles is a three-dimensional integral equation in five variables, from which the total cross section, the cross sections for elastic scattering and breakup reactions, as well as differential cross sections are obtained. The same observables are calculated based on the Glauber formulation. The first order Glauber calculation and the Glauber rescattering corrections are compared in detail with the corresponding terms of the Faddeev multiple scattering series for projectile energies between 100 MeV and 2 GeV.
