Improved Digital Quantum Simulation by Non-Unitary Channels

Simulating quantum systems is one of the most promising avenues to harness the computational power of quantum computers. However, hardware errors in noisy near-term devices remain a major obstacle for applications. Ideas based on the randomization of Suzuki-Trotter product formulas have been shown to be a powerful approach to reducing the errors of quantum simulation and lowering the gate count. In this paper, we study the performance of non-unitary simulation channels and consider the error structure of channels constructed from a weighted average of unitary circuits. We show that averaging over just a few simulation circuits can significantly reduce the Trotterization error for both single-step short-time and multi-step long-time simulations. We focus our analysis on two approaches for constructing circuit ensembles for averaging: (i) permuting the order of the terms in the Hamiltonian and (ii) applying a set of global symmetry transformations. We compare our analytical error bounds to empirical performance and show that empirical error reduction surpasses our analytical estimates in most cases. Finally, we test our method on an IonQ trapped-ion quantum computer accessed via the Amazon Braket cloud platform, and benchmark the performance of the averaging approach.

Analysis and approximations of Dirichlet boundary control of Stokes flows in the energy space

We study Dirichlet boundary control of Stokes flows in 2D polygonal domains. We consider cost functionals with two different boundary control regularization terms: the $L^2$ norm and an energy space seminorm. We prove well-posedness and regularity results for both problems, develop finite element discretizations for both problems, and prove finite element error estimates for the latter problem. The motivation to study the energy space problem follows from our analysis: we prove that the choice of the control space ${\bm L}^2(Γ)$ can lead to an optimal control with discontinuities at the corners, even when the domain is convex. We observe this phenomenon in numerical experiments. This behavior does not occur in Dirichlet boundary control problems for the Poisson equation on convex polygonal domains, and may not be desirable in real applications. For the energy space problem, we derive the first order optimality conditions, and show that the solution of the control problem is more regular than the solution of the problem with the ${\bm L}^2(Γ)$ regularization. We also prove a priori error estimates for the control in the energy norm, and present several numerical experiments for both control problems on convex and nonconvex domains.

Dilepton production from p-p to Ca-Ca at the Bevalac

The DLS collaboration has recently completed a high statistics study of dilepton production at the Bevalac. In particular, we have measured dielectrons (e+e-) from p-p and p-d collisions to understand the basic dilepton production mechanisms in the energy range from 1.05 - 4.9 GeV. These data can be used to determine the basic processes which contribute to nucleon-nucleon dilepton production such as hadronic bremsstrahlung, vector meson processes, and hadronic Dalitz decay. The data show that a simple elastic bremsstrahlung calculation is insufficient to explain the data. Theoretical models are compared with the data. A new high statistics study of Ca-Ca at 1.05 A GeV has been made to study the collectivity of A-A collisions.
