Total spectrum of photon emission by an ultra-relativistic positron channeling in a periodically bent crystal

We present the results of numerical calculations of the channelling and undulator radiation generated by an ultra-relativistic positron channelling along a crystal plane, which is periodically bent. The bending might be due either to the propagation of a transverse acoustic wave through the crystal, or due to the static strain as it occurs in superlattices. The periodically bent crystal serves as an undulator. We investigate the dependence of the intensities of both the ordinary channelling and the undulator radiations on the parameters of the periodically bent channel with simultaneous account for the dechannelling effect of the positrons. We demonstrate that there is a range of parameters in which the undulator radiation dominates over the channelling one and the characteristic frequencies of both types of radiation are well separated. This result is important, because the undulator radiation can be used to create a tunable source of X-ray and gamma-radiation.

The influence of the dechanneling process on the photon emission by an ultra-relativistc positron channeling in a periodically bent crystal

We investigate, both analytically and numerically, the influence of the dechanneling process on the parameters of undulator radiation generated by ultra-relativistic positron channelling along a crystal plane, which is periodically bent. The bending might be due either to the propagation of a transverse acoustic wave through the crystal, or due to the static strain as it occurs in superlattices. In either case the periodically bent crystal serves as an undulator which allows to generate X-ray and gamma-radiation. We propose the scheme for accurate quantitative treatment of the radiation in presence of the dechanneling. The scheme includes (i) the analytic expression for spectral-angular distribution which contains, as a parameter, the dechanneling length, (ii) the simulation procedure of the dechanneling process of a positron in periodically bent crystals. Using these we calculate the dechanneling lengths of 5 GeV positrons channeling in Si, Ge and W crystals, and the spectral-angular and spectral distributions of the undulator over broad ranges of the photons. The calculations are performed for various parameters of the channel bending.

Channeling of Charged Particles Through Periodically Bent Crystals: on the Possibility of a Gamma Laser

We discuss radiation generated by positrons channeling in a crystalline undulator. The undulator is produced by periodically bending a single crystal with an amplitude much larger than the interplanar spacing. Different approaches for bending the crystal are described and the restrictions on the parameters of the bending are established. We present the results of numeric calculations of the spectral distributions of the spontaneous emitted radiation and estimate the conditions for stimulated emission. Our investigations show that the proposed mechanism provides an efficient source for high energy photons, which is worth to be studied experimentally.

Total energy losses due to the radiation in an acoustically based undulator: the undulator and the channeling radiation included

This paper is devoted to the investigation of the radiation energy losses of an ultra-relativistic charged particle channeling along a crystal plane which is periodically bent by a transverse acoustic wave. In such a system there are two essential mechanisms leading to the photon emission. The first one is the ordinary channeling radiation. This radiation is generated as a result of the transverse oscillatory motion of the particle in the channel. The second one is the acoustically induced radiation. This radiation is emitted because of the periodic bending of the particle's trajectory created by the acoustic wave. The general formalism described in our work is applicable for the calculation of the total radiative losses accounting for the contributions of both radiation mechanisms. We analyze the relative importance of the two mechanisms at various amplitudes and lengths of the acoustic wave and the energy of the projectile particle. We establish the ranges of projectile particle energies, in which total energy loss is small for the LiH, C, Si, Ge, Fe and W crystals. This result is important for the determination of the projectile particle energy region, in which acoustically induced radiation of the undulator type and also the stimulated photon emission can be effectively generated. The latter effects have been described in our previous works.

Photon emission by an ultra-relativistic particle channeling in a periodically bent crystal

This paper is devoted to a detailed analysis of the new type of the undulator radiation generated by an ultra-relativistic charged particle channeling along a crystal plane, which is periodically bent by a transverse acoustic wave, as well as to the conditions limiting the observation of this phenomenon. This mechanism makes feasible the generation of electromagnetic radiation, both spontaneous and stimulated, emitted in a wide range of the photon energies, from X- up to gamma-rays.

Acoustically induced radiation of a charged particle channeling in a crystal

We suggest a new type of radiation (acoustically induced radiation - AIR), which is generated by ultrarelativistic particles channeling in crystal along a crystal plane (or axis), which is bent by a transverse acoustic wave. The AIR mechanism allows to make an undulator with characteristics inaccessible in the undulators based on the motion of particles in the periodic magnetic fields and also in the field of the laser radiation. The intensity of AIR can easily be made larger than the intensity of the radiation in a linear crystal and can be varied in a wide range by varying the frequency and the amplitude of the acoustic wave.

Microscopic coloured quark-dynamics in the soft non-perturbative regime -- Description of hadron formation in relativistic S+Au collisions at CERN

The quark-molecular-dynamics model is used to study microscopically the dynamics of the coloured quark phase and the subsequent hadron formation in relativistic S+Au collisions at the CERN-SPS. Particle spectra and hadron ratios are compared to both data and the results of hadronic transport calculations. The non-equilibrium dynamics of hadronization and the loss of correlation among quarks are studied.

Nuclei, Superheavy Nuclei and Hypermatter in a chiral SU(3)-Modell

A model based on chiral SU(3)-symmetry in nonlinear realisation is used for the investigation of nuclei, superheavy nuclei, hypernuclei and multistrange nuclear objects (so called MEMOs). The model works very well in the case of nuclei and hypernuclei with one Lambda-particle and rules out MEMOs. Basic observables which are known for nuclei and hypernuclei are reproduced satisfactorily. The model predicts Z=120 and N=172, 184 and 198 as the next shell closures in the region of superheavy nuclei. The calculations have been performed in self-consistent relativistic mean field approximation assuming spherical symmetry. The parameters were adapted to known nuclei.

Properties of Dense Strange Hadronic Matter with Quark Degrees of Freedom

The properties of strange hadronic matter are studied in the context of the modified quark-meson coupling model using two substantially different sets of hyperon-hyperon ($YY$) interactions. The first set is based on the Nijmegen hard core potential model D with slightly attractive $YY$ interactions. The second potential set is based on the recent SU(3) extension of the Nijmegen soft-core potential NSC97 with strongly attractive $YY$ interactions which may allow for deeply bound hypernuclear matter. The results show that, for the first potential set, the $Σ$ hyperon does not appear at all in the bulk at any baryon density and for all strangeness fractions. The binding energy curves of the resulting $NΛΞ$ system vary smoothly with density and the system is stable (or metastable if we include the weak force). However, the situation is drastically changed when using the second set where the $Σ$ hyperons appear in the system at large baryon densities above a critical strangeness fraction. We find strange hadronic matter undergoes a first order phase transition from a $NΛΞ$ system to a $NΣΞ$ for strangeness fractions $f_S>1.2$ and baryonic densities exceeding twice ordinary nuclear matter density. Furthermore, it is found that the system built of $NΣΞ$ is deeply bound. This phase transition affects significantly the equation of state which becomes much softer and a substantial drop in energy density and pressure are detected as the phase transition takes place.

J/psi Suppression and Enhancement in Au+Au Collisions at the BNL RHIC

We consider the production of the J/psi mesons in heavy ion collisions at RHIC energies in the statistical coalescence model with an exact (canonical ensemble) charm conservation. The c\bar{c} quark pairs are assumed to be created in the primary hard parton collisions, but the formation of the open and hidden charm particles takes place at the hadronization stage and follows the prescription of statistical mechanics. The dependence of the J/psi production on both the number of nucleon participants and the collision energy is studied. The model predicts the J/psi suppression for low energies, whereas at the highest RHIC energy the model reveals the J/psi enhancement.

Chemical freeze-out parameters at RHIC from microscopic model calculations

The relaxation of hot nuclear matter to an equilibrated state in the central zone of heavy-ion collisions at energies from AGS to RHIC is studied within the microscopic UrQMD model. It is found that the system reaches the (quasi)equilibrium stage for the period of 10-15 fm/$c$. Within this time the matter in the cell expands nearly isentropically with the entropy to baryon ratio $S/A = 150 - 170$. Thermodynamic characteristics of the system at AGS and at SPS energies at the endpoints of this stage are very close to the parameters of chemical and thermal freeze-out extracted from the thermal fit to experimental data. Predictions are made for the full RHIC energy $\sqrt{s} = 200$ AGeV. The formation of a resonance-rich state at RHIC energies is discussed.

Statistical Multifragmentation in Thermodynamical Limit: An Exact Solution for Phase Transitions

An exact analytical solution of the statistical multifragmentation model is found in thermodynamic limit. Excluded volume effects are taken into account in the thermodynamically self-consistent way. The model exhibits a 1-st order phase transition of the liquid-gas type. An extension of the model including the Fisher's term is also studied. The possibility of the second order phase transition at or above the critical point is discussed. The mixed phase region of the phase diagram, where the gas of nuclear fragments coexists with the infinite liquid condensate, is unambiguously identified. The peculiar thermodynamic properties of the model near the boundary between the mixed phase and the pure gaseous phase are studied. The results for the caloric curve and specific heat are presented and a physical picture of the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition is clarified.

The statistical coalescence model for the production of open and hidden charm is considered within the canonical ensemble formulation. The data for the J/psi multiplicity in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A GeV are used for the model prediction of the open charm yield which has not yet been measured in these reactions.

Quantum Vacuum in Hot Nuclear Matter - A Nonperturbative Treatment

We derive the equation of state for hot nuclear matter using Walecka model in a nonperturbative formalism. We include here the vacuum polarisation effects arising from the nucleon and scalar mesons through a realignment of the vacuum. A ground state structure with baryon-antibaryon condensates yields the results obtained through the relativistic Hartree approximation (RHA) of summing baryonic tadpole diagrams. Generalization of such a state to include the quantum effects for the scalar meson fields through the $σ$-meson condensates amounts to summing over a class of multiloop diagrams. The techniques of thermofield dynamics (TFD) method are used for the finite temperature and finite density calculations. The in-medium nucleon and sigma meson masses are also calculated in a self consistent manner. We examine the liquid-gas phase transition at low temperatures ($\approx$ 20 MeV), as well as apply the formalism to high temperatures to examine for a possible chiral symmetry restoration phase transition.

Current Status of Quark Gluon Plasma Signals

Compelling evidence for the creation of a new form of matter has been claimed to be found in Pb+Pb collisions at SPS. We discuss the uniqueness of often proposed experimental signatures for quark matter formation in relativistic heavy ion collisions. It is demonstrated that so far none of the proposed signals like Jψmeson production/suppression, strangeness enhancement, dileptons, and directed flow unambigiously show that a phase of deconfined matter has been formed in SPS Pb+Pb collisions. We emphasize the need for systematic future measurements to search for simultaneous irregularities in the excitation functions of several observables in order to come close to pinning the properties of hot, dense QCD matter from data.

Strange quark stars within the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

We investigate the properties of charge-neutral $β$-equilibrium cold quark matter within the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The calculations are carried out for different ratios of coupling constants characterizing the vector and scalar 4-fermion interaction, $ξ\equiv G_V/G_S$. It is shown that for $ξ< 0.4$ matter is self-bound and for $ξ< 0.65$ it has a first order phase transition of the liquid-gas type. The Gibbs conditions in the mixed phase are applied for the case of two chemical potentials associated with the baryon number and electric charge. The characteristics of the quark stars are calculated for $ξ= 0, 0.5$ and 1. It is found that the phase transition leads to a strong density variation at the surface of these stars. For $ξ= 1$ the properties of quark stars show behaviors typical for neutron stars. At $ξ\goo 0.4$ the stars near to the maximum mass have a large admixture of strange quarks in their interiors.
