A Method to Determine the Electric Field of Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers Using a UV Laser System and its Application in MicroBooNE

Liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs) are now a standard detector technology for making accelerator neutrino measurements, due to their high material density, precise tracking, and calorimetric capabilities. An electric field (E-field) is required in such detectors to drift ionized electrons to the anode to be collected. The E-field of a TPC is often approximated to be uniform between the anode and the cathode planes. However, significant distortions can appear from effects such as mechanical deformations, electrode failures, or the accumulation of space charge generated by cosmic rays. The latter is particularly relevant for detectors placed near the Earth's surface and with large drift distances and long drift time. To determine the E-field in situ, an ultraviolet (UV) laser system is installed in the MicroBooNE experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The purpose of this system is to provide precise measurements of the E-field, and to make it possible to correct for 3D spatial distortions due to E-field non-uniformities. Here we describe the methodology developed for deriving spatial distortions, the drift velocity and the E-field from UV-laser measurements.

Reconstruction and Measurement of $\mathcal{O}$(100) MeV Energy Electromagnetic Activity from $π^0 \rightarrow γγ$ Decays in the MicroBooNE LArTPC

We present results on the reconstruction of electromagnetic (EM) activity from photons produced in charged current $ν_μ$ interactions with final state $π^0$s. We employ a fully-automated reconstruction chain capable of identifying EM showers of $\mathcal{O}$(100) MeV energy, relying on a combination of traditional reconstruction techniques together with novel machine-learning approaches. These studies demonstrate good energy resolution, and good agreement between data and simulation, relying on the reconstructed invariant $π^0$ mass and other photon distributions for validation. The reconstruction techniques developed are applied to a selection of $ν_μ + {\rm Ar} \rightarrow μ+ π^0 + X$ candidate events to demonstrate the potential for calorimetric separation of photons from electrons and reconstruction of $π^0$ kinematics.

First Measurement of Inclusive Muon Neutrino Charged Current Differential Cross Sections on Argon at $E_ν\sim 0.8$ GeV with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report the first measurement of the double-differential and total muon neutrino charged current inclusive cross sections on argon at a mean neutrino energy of 0.8 GeV. Data were collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located in the Fermilab Booster neutrino beam and correspond to $1.6 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target of exposure. The measured differential cross sections are presented as a function of muon momentum, using multiple Coulomb scattering as a momentum measurement technique, and the muon angle with respect to the beam direction. We compare the measured cross sections to multiple neutrino event generators and find better agreement with those containing more complete treatment of quasielastic scattering processes at low $Q^2$. The total flux integrated cross section is measured to be $0.693 \pm 0.010 \, (\text{stat}) \pm 0.165 \, (\text{syst}) \times 10^{-38} \, \text{cm}^{2}$.

Two-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories with exceptional gauge groups

We apply the recent proposal for mirrors of nonabelian (2,2) supersymmetric two-dimensional gauge theories to make predictions for two-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories with exceptional gauge groups G2, F4, E6, E7, and E8. We compute the mirror Landau-Ginzburg models and predict excluded Coulomb loci and Coulomb branch relations (quantum cohomology). We also discuss the relationship between weight lattice normalizations and theta angle periodicities in the proposal, and explore different conventions for the mirrors. Finally, we discuss the behavior of pure gauge theories with exceptional gauge groups under RG flow, and describe evidence that any pure supersymmetric two-dimensional gauge theory with connected and simply-connected semisimple gauge group flows in the IR to a free theory of as many twisted chiral superfields as the rank of the gauge group, extending previous results for SU, SO, and Sp gauge theories.

A proposal for (0,2) mirrors of toric varieties

In this paper we propose (0,2) mirrors for general Fano toric varieties with special tangent bundle deformations, corresponding to subsets of toric deformations. Our mirrors are of the form of (B/2-twisted) (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg models, matching Hori-Vafa mirrors on the (2,2) locus. We compare our predictions to (0,2) mirrors obtained by Chen et al for certain examples of toric varieties, and find that they match. We also briefly outline conjectures for analogous results for hypersurfaces in Fano toric varieties. Our methods utilize results from supersymmetric localization, which allows us to incidentally gain occasional further insights into GLSM-based (2,2) mirror constructions. For example, we explicitly verify that closed-string correlation functions of the original A-twisted GLSM match those of the mirror B-twisted Landau-Ginzburg model, as well as (0,2) deformations thereof.

Bagger-Witten line bundles on moduli spaces of elliptic curves

In this paper we discuss Bagger-Witten line bundles over moduli spaces of SCFTs. We review how in general they are `fractional' line bundles, not honest line bundles, twisted on triple overlaps. We discuss the special case of moduli spaces of elliptic curves in detail. There, the Bagger-Witten line bundle does not exist as an ordinary line bundle, but rather is necessarily fractional. As a fractional line bundle, it is nontrivial (though torsion) over the uncompactified moduli stack, and its restriction to the interior, excising corners with enhanced stabilizers, is also fractional. It becomes an honest line bundle on a moduli stack defined by a quotient of the upper half plane by a metaplectic group, rather than SL(2,Z). We review and compare to results of recent work arguing that well-definedness of the worldsheet metric implies that the Bagger-Witten line bundle admits a flat connection (which includes torsion bundles as special cases), and give general arguments on the existence of universal structures on moduli spaces of SCFTs, in which superconformal deformation parameters are promoted to nondynamical fields ranging over the SCFT moduli space.

The D0 Silicon Microstrip Tracker

This paper describes the mechanical design, the readout chain, the production, testing and the installation of the Silicon Microstrip Tracker of the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. In addition, description of the performance of the detector during the experiment data collection between 2001 and 2010 is provided.
