Polynomial potentials and nilpotent groups

This paper deals with the partial solution of the energy-eigenvalue problem for one-dimensional Schrödinger operators of the form $H_N=X_0^2+V_N$, where $V_N=X_N^2+αX_{N-1}$ is a polynomial potential of degree $(2N-2)$ and $X_i$ are the generators of an irreducible representation of a particular nilpotent group $\mathcal{G}_N$. Algebraization of the eigenvalue problem is achieved for eigenfunctions of the form $\sum_{k=0}^M a_k X_2^k \exp(-\int dx\, X_N)$. It is shown that the overdetermined linear system of equations for the coefficients $a_k$ has a nontrivial solution, if the parameter $α$ and $(N-3)$ Casimir invariants satisfy certain constraints. This general setting works for even $N\geq 2$ and can also be applied to odd $N\geq 3$, if the potential is symmetrized by considering it as function of $|x|$ rather than $x$. It provides a unified approach to quasi-exactly solvable polynomial interactions, including the harmonic oscillator, and extends corresponding results known from the literature. Explicit expressions for energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are given for the quasi-exactly solvable sextic, octic and decatic potentials. The case of $E=0$ solutions for general $N$ and $M$ is also discussed. As physical application, the movement of a charged particle in an electromagnetic field of pertinent polynomial form is shortly sketched.

Cluster Separability in Relativistic Few Body Problems

A convenient framework for dealing with hadron structure and hadronic physics in the few-GeV energy range is relativistic quantum mechanics. Unlike relativistic quantum field theory, one deals with a fixed, or at least restricted number of degrees of freedom while maintaining relativistic invariance. For systems of interacting particles this is achieved by means of the, so called, "Bakamjian-Thomas construction", which is a systematic procedure for implementing interaction terms in the generators of the Poincare group such that their algebra is preserved. Doing relativistic quantum mechanics in this way one, however, faces a problem connected with the physical requirement of cluster separability as soon as one has more than two interacting particles. Cluster separability, or sometimes also termed "macroscopic causality", is the property that if a system is subdivided into subsystems which are then separated by a sufficiently large spacelike distance, these subsystems should behave independently. In the present contribution we discuss the problem of cluster separability and sketch the procedure to resolve it.

Loop prolongations and three-cocycles in simulated magnetic fields from rotating reference frames

We show that the Wigner-Bargmann program of grounding non-relativistic quantum mechanics in the unitary projective representations of the Galilei group can be extended to include all non-inertial reference frames. The key concept is the \emph{Galilean line group}, the group of transformations that ties together all accelerating reference frames, and its representations. These representations are constructed under the natural constraint that they reduce to the well-known unitary, projective representations of the Galilei group when the transformations are restricted to inertial reference frames. This constraint can be accommodated only for a class of representations with a sufficiently rich cocycle structure. Unlike the projective representations of the Galilei group, these cocycle representations of the Galilean line group do not correspond to central extensions of the group. Rather, they correspond to a class of non-associative extensions, known as \emph{loop prolongations}, that are determined by three-cocycles. As an application, we show that the phase shifts due to the rotation of the earth that have been observed in neutron interferometry experiments and the rotational effects that lead to simulated magnetic fields in optical lattices can be rigorously derived from the representations of the loop prolongations of the Galilean line group.

Quantum Mechanics in non-inertial reference frames: time-dependent rotations and loop prolongations

This is the fourth in a series of papers on developing a formulation of quantum mechanics in non-inertial reference frames. This formulation is grounded in a class of unitary cocycle representations of what we have called the Galilean line group, the generalization of the Galilei group to include transformations amongst non-inertial reference frames. These representations show that in quantum mechanics, just as the case in classical mechanics, the transformations to accelerating reference frames give rise to fictitious forces. In previous work, we have shown that there exist representations of the Galilean line group that uphold the non-relativistic equivalence principle as well as representations that violate the equivalence principle. In these previous studies, the focus was on linear accelerations. In this paper, we undertake an extension of the formulation to include rotational accelarations. We show that the incorporation of rotational accelerations requires a class of \emph{loop prolongations} of the Galilean line group and their unitary cocycle representations. We recover the centrifugal and Coriolis force effects from these loop representations. Loops are more general than groups in that their multiplication law need not be associative. Hence, our broad theoretical claim is that a Galilean quantum theory that holds in arbitrary non-inertial reference frames requires going beyond groups and group representations, the well-stablished framework for implementing symmetry transformations in quantum mechanics.

Quantum Mechanics in Noninertial Reference Frames: Violations of the Nonrelativistic Equivalence Principle

In previous work we have developed a formulation of quantum mechanics in non-inertial reference frames. This formulation is grounded in a class of unitary cocycle representations of what we have called the Galilean line group, the generalization of the Galilei group that includes transformations amongst non-inertial reference frames. These representations show that in quantum mechanics, just as is the case in classical mechanics, the transformations to accelerating reference frames give rise to fictitious forces. A special feature of these previously constructed representations is that they all respect the non-relativistic equivalence principle, wherein the fictitious forces associated with linear acceleration can equivalently be described by gravitational forces. In this paper we exhibit a large class of cocycle representations of the Galilean line group that violate the equivalence principle. Nevertheless the classical mechanics analogue of these cocycle representations all respect the equivalence principle.

A relativistic coupled-channel formalism for the pion form factor

The electromagnetic form factor of a confined quark-antiquark pair is calculated within the framework of point-form relativistic quantum mechanics. The dynamics of theexchanged photon is explicitly taken into account by treating theelectromagnetic scattering of an electron by a meson as a relativistic two-channel problem for a Bakamjian-Thomas type mass operator. This approach guarantees Poincare invariance. Using a Feshbach reduction the coupled-channel problem can be converted into a one-channel problem for the elastic electron-meson channel. By comparing the one-photon-exchange optical potential at the constituent and hadronic levels, we are able to unambiguously identify the electromagnetic meson form factor. Violations of cluster-separability properties, which are inherent in the Bakamjian-Thomas approach, become negligible for sufficiently large invariant mass of the electron-meson system. In the limit of an infinitely large invariant mass, an equivalence with form-factor calculations done in front-form relativistic quantum mechanics is established analytically.

Point Form Quantum Field Theory on Velocity Grids I: Bosonic Contractions

In constrast to discretized space-time approximations to continuum quantum field theories, discretized velocity space approximations to continuum quantum field theories are investigated. A four-momentum operator is given in terms of bare fermion-antifermion-boson creation and annihilation operators with discrete indices. In continuum quantum field theories the fermion-antifermion creation and annihilation operators appear as bilinears in the four-momentum operator and generate a unitary algebra. When the number of modes range over only a finite number of values, the algebra is that associated with the Lie algebra of U(2N). By keeping N finite (but arbitrary) problems due to an infinite Lorentz volume and to the creation of infinite numbers of bare fermion-antifermion pairs are avoided. But even with a finite number of modes, it is still possible to create an infinite number of bare bosons. We show how the full boson algebra arises as the contraction limit of another unitary algebra that restricts the number of bare bosons in any mode to be finite. Generic properties of finite mode Hamiltonians are investigated, as are several simple models to see the rate of convergence of the boson contraction; the possibility of fine tuning the bare strong coupling constant is also briefly discussed.

Point-form quantum field theory and meson form factors

We shortly review point-form quantum field theory, i.e. the canonical quantization of a relativistic field theory on a Lorentz-invariant surface of the form $x_μx^μ= τ^2$. As an example of how point-form quantum field theory may enter the framework of relativistic quantum mechanics we discuss the calculation of the electromagnetic form factor of a confined quark-antiquark pair (e.g. the pion).

Bakamjian-Thomas mass operator for the few-nucleon system from chiral dynamics

We present an exploratory study consisting in the formulation of a relativistic quantum mechanics to describe the few-nucleon system at low energy, starting from the quantum field theoretical chiral Lagrangian involving pions and nucleons. To this aim we construct a Bakamjian-Thomas mass operator and perform a truncation of the Fock space which respects at each stage the relativistic covariance. Such truncation is justified, at sufficiently low energy, in the framework of a systematic chiral expansion. As an illustration we discuss the bound state observables and low-energy phaseshifts of the nucleon-nucleon and pion-nucleon scattering at the leading order of our scheme.

Point-form quantum field theory

We examine canonical quantization of relativistic field theories on the forward hyperboloid, a Lorentz-invariant surface of the form $x_μx^μ= τ^2$. This choice of quantization surface implies that all components of the 4-momentum operator are affected by interactions (if present), whereas rotation and boost generators remain interaction free -- a feature characteristic of Dirac's `` point-form\rq\rq of relativistic dynamics. Unlike previous attempts to quantize fields on space-time hyperboloids, we keep the usual plane-wave expansion of the field operators and consider evolution of the system generated by the 4-momentum operator. We verify that the Fock-space representations of the Poincaré generators for free scalar and spin-1/2 fields look the same as for equal-time quantization. Scattering is formulated for interacting fields in a covariant interaction picture and it is shown that the familiar perturbative expansion of the S-operator is recovered by our approach. An appendix analyzes special distributions, integrals over the forward hyperboloid, that are used repeatedly in the paper.

Vector mesons in a relativistic point-form approach

We apply the point form of relativistic quantum mechanics to develop a Poincare invariant coupled-channel formalism for two-particle systems interacting via one-particle exchange. This approach takes the exchange particle explicitly into account and leads to a generalized eigenvalue equation for the Bakamjian-Thomas type mass operator of the system. The coupling of the exchange particle is derived from quantum field theory. As an illustrative example we consider vector mesons within the chiral constituent quark model in which the hyperfine interaction between the confined quark-antiquark pair is generated by Goldstone-boson exchange. We study the effect of retardation in the Goldstone-boson exchange by comparing with the commonly used instantaneous approximation. As a nice physical feature we find that the problem of a too large $ρ$-$ω$ splitting can nearly be avoided by taking the dynamics of the exchange meson explicitly into account.

Point Form Electrodynamics and the Construction of Conserved Current Operators

A general procedure for constructing conserved electromagnetic current operators, for both finite and infinite degree of freedom systems, is given. A four-momentum operator consisting of matter, photon, and electromagnetic interactions is assumed to be polynomial in photon creation and annihilation operators. Commutators of the four-momentum operator with the four-vector potential operator at the space-time point zero give the electromagnetic field tensor and current operator at the space-time point zero. In this construction there are no equations of motion to be satisfied and field operators at an arbitrary space-time point-defined as the four-momentum translates of the corresponding operators at the space-time point zero-are not local operators. Several examples are given to show how the construction is carried out.

Point Form Electrodynamics and the Gupta-Bleuler Formalism

The Gupta-Bleuler formalism for photons is derived from induced representation theory. The representation for the little group for massless particles, the two dimensional Euclidian group, is chosen to be the four dimensional nonunitary representation obtained by restricting elements of the Lorentz group to the Euclidian group. Though the little group representation is nonunitary, it is shown that the representation of the Poincaré group is unitary. As a consequence of the four dimensional representation, the polarization vector, which connects the four-vector potential with creation and annihilation operators, is given in terms of boosts, coset representatives of the Lorentz group with respect to the Euclidian group. Several polarization vectors (boost choices) are worked out, including a front form polariation vector. The different boost choices are shown to be related by the analogue of Melosh rotations, namely Euclidian group transformations.

Constructing Point Form Mass Operators from Interaction Lagrangians

Starting from an interaction Lagrangian formed out of local fields, an interacting four-momentum operator is constructed by integrating the interaction Lagrangian over the forward hyperboloid. Such a four-momentum operator has the property that the components commute among themselves; however, when the Fock space on which the four-momentum operator acts is truncated, the components no longer commute among themselves. By modifying matrix elements of the four-momentum operator on the truncated space, Bakamjian-Thomas mass operatorsare constructed which restore the Poincare relations. Examples for a simple Lagrangian are given.

Local Current Operators for Arbitrary Spin Particles

Free current operators are constructed for massive particles with arbitrary spin $j$. Such current operators are related to representations of the U(N,N) type groups and are covariant under the (extended) Poincaré group and charge conjugation, where the charge conjugation operation is defined as an automorphism on U(N,N) elements. The currents are also required to satisfy current conservation, hermiticity, and locality. The condition that the currents be local is shown to be equivalent to certain integral constraints on form factors. These constraints are satisfied by writing the currents in terms of free local spin $j$ fields. It is shown that there are $(2j+1)$ different local currents for a spin $j$ particle, each with an arbitrary form factor, generalizing the Dirac and Pauli currents for spin 1/2 particles. Static properties of the various currents are also given.

Point-Form Analysis of Elastic Deuteron Form Factors

Point-form relativistic quantum mechanics is applied to elastic electron-deuteron scattering. The deuteron is modeled using relativistic interactions that are scattering-equivalent to the nonrelativistic Argonne $v_{18}$ and Reid '93 interactions. A point-form spectator approximation (PFSA) is introduced to define a conserved covariant current in terms of single-nucleon form factors. The PFSA is shown to provide an accurate description of data up to momentum transfers of 0.5 ${\rm GeV}^2$, but falls below the data at higher momentum transfers. Results are sensitive to the nucleon form factor parameterization chosen, particularly to the neutron electric form factor.
