Extended elastic model for flow in metallic glasses

We report that both shear and bulk moduli, not only shear modulus, are critical parameters involved in both homogeneous and inhomogeneous flows in metallic glass. The flow activation energy (ΔF) of various glasses when scaled with average molar volume Vm, which is defined as flow activation energy density ρ_E =ΔF/Vm, can be expressed as: D=(10G+K)/11 . The extended elastic model is suggestive for understanding the glass transition and deformation in metallic glasses.

Field-induced multiple metamagnetization in phase transition from paramagnetic austenite to ferromagnetic martensite in MnNi1-xFexGe

Tailoring the phase stability and magnetic structure by combining the antiferromagnetic MnNiGe martensite with ferromagnetic MnFeGe austenite, a magnetic-field-induced martensitic transformation has been achieved in MnNi1-xFexGe system. The doped Fe enables the isolated structural and magnetic transitions of MnNiGe to coincide at room temperature and also establishes ferromagnetic couplings in six-Mn-centering-one-Fe-atom clusters. The ferromagnetic clusters transit the antiferromagnetic state in martensite to a ferromagnetic state and the alloys are further induced to a stronger ferromagnetic state by external field, resulting in a large magnetization difference up to 50 emu/g across the transformation. The field-induced martensitic transformation thus experiences a multiple metamagnetization process.

Vacancy-tuned paramagnetic/ferromagnetic martensitic transformation in Mn-poor Mn_{1-x}CoGe alloys

It is shown that a temperature window between the Curie temperatures of martensite and austenite phases around the room temperature can be obtained by a vacancy-tuning strategy in Mn-poor Mn1-xCoGe alloys (0 <= x <= 0.050). Based on this, a martensitic transformation from paramagnetic austenite to ferromagnetic martensite with a large magnetization difference can be realized in this window. This gives rise to a magnetic-field-induced martensitic transformation and a large magnetocaloric effect in the Mn1-xCoGe system. The decrease of the transformation temperature and of the thermal hysteresis of the transformation, as well as the stable Curie temperatures of martensite and austenite, are discussed on the basis of the Mn-poor Co-vacancy structure and the corresponding valence-electron concentration.

Electrical Detection of Spin Precession in Single Layer Graphene Spin Valves with Transparent Contacts

Spin accumulation and spin precession in single-layer graphene are studied by non-local spin valve measurements at room temperature. The dependence of the non-local magnetoresistance on electrode spacing is investigated and the results indicate a spin diffusion length of ~1.6 microns and a spin injection/detection efficiency of 0.013. Electrical detection of the spin precession confirms that the non-local signal originates from spin injection and transport. Fitting of the Hanle spin precession data yields a spin relaxation time of ~84 ps and a spin diffusion length of ~1.5 microns, which is consistent with the value obtained through the spacing dependence.

Electron-Hole Asymmetry of Spin Injection and Transport in Single-Layer Graphene

Spin-dependent properties of single-layer graphene (SLG) have been studied by non-local spin valve measurements at room temperature. Gate voltage dependence shows that the non-local magnetoresistance (MR) is proportional to the conductivity of the SLG, which is the predicted behavior for transparent ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic contacts. While the electron and hole bands in SLG are symmetric, gate voltage and bias dependence of the non-local MR reveal an electron-hole asymmetry in which the non-local MR is roughly independent of bias for electrons, but varies significantly with bias for holes.

Enhancement of Spin Coherence using Q-factor Engineering in Semiconductor Microdisk Lasers

Semiconductor microcavities offer unique means of controlling light-matter interactions, which have led to the development of a wide range of applications in optical communications and inspired proposals for quantum information processing and computational schemes. Studies of spin dynamics in microcavities - a new and promising research field - have revealed novel effects such as polarization beats, stimulated spin scattering, and giant Faraday rotation. Here, we study the electron spin dynamics in optically-pumped GaAs microdisk lasers with quantum wells (QWs) and interface-fluctuation quantum dots (QDs) in the active region. In particular, we address the question of how the electron spin dynamics are modified by the stimulated emission in the disks, and observe an enhancement of the spin lifetime when the optical excitation is in resonance with a high quality (Q ~ 5000) lasing mode. This resonant enhancement, contrary to what is expected from the Purcell effect observed in the cavities, is then manipulated by altering the cavity design and dimensions.

Strain Relief in Cu-Pd Heteroepitaxy

We present experimental and theoretical studies of Pd/Cu(100) and Cu/Pd(100) heterostructures in order to explore their structure and misfit strain relaxation. Ultrathin Pd and Cu films are grown by pulsed laser deposition at room temperature. For Pd/Cu, compressive strain is released by networks of misfit dislocations running in the [100] and [010] directions, which appear after a few monolayers already. In striking contrast, for Cu/Pd the tensile overlayer remains coherent up to about 9 ML, after which multilayer growth occurs. The strong asymmetry between tensile and compressive cases is in contradiction with continuum elasticity theory, and is also evident in the structural parameters of the strained films. Molecular Dynamics calculations based on classical many-body potentials confirm the pronounced tensile-compressive asymmetry and are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Static and Dynamic Spectroscopy of (Al,Ga)As/GaAs Microdisk Lasers with Interface Fluctuation Quantum Dots

We have studied the steady state and dynamic optical properties of semiconductor microdisk lasers whose active region contains interface fluctuation quantum dots in GaAs/(Ga,Al)As quantum wells. Steady-state measurements of the stimulated emission via whispering gallery modes yield a quality factor $Q \sim 5600$ and a coupling constant $β\sim 0.09$. The broad gain spectrum produces mode hopping between spectrally adjacent whispering gallery modes as a function of temperature and excitation power. Time- and energy-resolved photoluminescence measurements show that the emission rise and decay rates increase significantly with excitation power. Marked differences are observed between the radiative decay rates in processed and unprocessed samples.

Tracking the curved jet in PKS 1502+106

We carried out a multifrequency and multiepoch study of the highly polarized quasar, PKS 1502+106 at radio frequencies. The analysis is based on an EVN dataset at 5 GHz, archive VLBA datasets at 2.3, 8.3, 24.4 and 43.1 GHz and an archive MERLIN dataset at 5 GHz. The various datasets span over a period of 10 years. The source is characterized by a multi-component one-sided jet at all epochs. The VLBI images show that a complex curved jet is located to the southeast and east of the core, with the position angle (PA) of the jet axis wiggling between 80 deg and 130 deg. The MERLIN image reveals that the jet extends to 0.6 arcsec at a PA 135+-12 degr. The radio core in the VLBI images has a brightness temperature approaching the equipartition limit, indicating highly relativistic plasma beamed towards us. Delta PA in the source, the misalignment of the kpc- and pc-scale radio structure, is estimated about 32 degr, suggesting that PKS 1502+106 belongs to the aligned population. Four superluminal components are detected in the parsec scale jet, whose velocities are 24.2 h{-1}c, 14.3 h{-1}c, 6.8 h{-1}c and 18.1 h{-1}c. Our analysis supports the idea that the relativistic jet in PKS 1502+106 is characterised by extreme beaming and that its radio properties are similar to those of gamma-ray loud sources.

The radio counter-jet of the QSO 3C~48

We present multi--frequency radio observational results of the quasar 3C~48. The observations were carried out with the Very Large Array (VLA) at five frequencies of 0.33, 1.5, 4.8, 8.4, and 22.5 GHz, and with the Multi--Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) at the two frequencies of 1.6 and 5 GHz. The source shows a one--sided jet to the north within 1\arcsec, which then extends to the northeast and becomes diffuse. Two bright components (N2 and N3), containing most of the flux density are present in the northern jet. The spectral index of the two components is $α_{N2}\sim-0.99\pm0.12$ and $α_{N3}\sim-0.84\pm0.23$ ($S\proptoν^α$). Our images show the presence of an extended structure surrounding component N2, suggestive of strong interaction between the jet and the interstellar medium (ISM) of the host galaxy. A steep--spectrum component, labelled as S, located 0.25 ardsec southwest to the flat--spectrum component which could be the core of 3C 48, is detected at a significance of $>15σ$. Both the location and the steepness of the spectrum of component S suggest the presence of a counter--jet in 3C 48.

Electronic States and Magnetism of Mn Impurities and Dimers in Narrow-Gap and Wide-Gap III-V Semiconductors

Electronic states and magnetic properties of single $Mn$ impurity and dimer doped in narrow-gap and wide-gap $III$-$V$ semiconductors have been studied systematically. It has been found that in the ground state for single $Mn$ impurity, $Mn$-$As(N)$ complex is antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling when $p$-$d$ hybridization $V_{pd}$ is large and both the hole level $E_{v}$ and the impurity level $E_{d}$ are close to the midgap; or very weak ferromagnetic (FM) when $V_{pd}$ is small and both $E_{v}$ and $E_d$ are deep in the valence band. In $Mn$ dimer situation, the $Mn$ spins are AFM coupling for half-filled or full-filled $p$ orbits; on the contrast, the Mn spins are double-exchange-like FM coupling for any $p$-orbits away from half-filling. We propose the strong {\it p-d} hybridized double exchange mechanism is responsible for the FM order in diluted $III$-$V$ semiconductors.

Extreme Superluminal Motion in the Curved Jet of PKS 1502+106

In this paper we present a multifrequency and multiepoch study of \object{PKS 1502+106} at radio frequencies. The analysis is based on an EVN (European VLBI Network) dataset at 5 GHz and archive VLBA (Very Long Baseline Array) datasets at 2.3, 8.3, 24.4 and 43.1 GHz over a period of 8 years. The source is characterized by a multi--component one--sided jet at all epochs. The high--resolution images at 5, 8.3, 24.4 and 43.1 GHz show a curved jet morphology in the source. The radio core brightness temperature approaches the equipartition limit. Superluminal motions of $37.3\pm9.3 c$, $22.0\pm15.5 c$, $10.5\pm2.6 c$ and $27.9\pm7.0 c$ are measured in four distinct components of the jet. Our analysis supports the idea that the relativistic jet in \object{PKS 1502+106} is characterised by extreme beaming and that its radio properties are similar to those of $γ$--ray loud sources.

A relativistic helical jet in the gamma-ray AGN 1156+295

We present the results of a number of high resolution radio observations of the AGN 1156+295. These include multi-epoch and multi-frequency VLBI, VSOP, MERLIN and VLA observations made over a period of 50 months. The 5 GHz MERLIN images trace a straight jet extending to 2 arcsec at P.A. -18 degrees. Extended low brightness emission was detected in the MERLIN observation at 1.6 GHz and the VLA observation at 8.5 GHz with a bend of about 90 degrees at the end of the 2 arcsecond jet. A region of similar diffuse emission is also seen about 2 arcseconds south of the radio core. The VLBI images of the blazar reveal a core-jet structure with an oscillating jet on a milli-arcsecond (mas) scale which aligns with the arcsecond jet at a distance of several tens of milli-arcseconds from the core. This probably indicates that the orientation of the jet structure is close to the line of sight, with the northern jet being relativistically beamed toward us. In this scenario the diffuse emission to the north and south is not beamed and appears symmetrical. For the northern jet at the mas scale, proper motions of 13.7 +/-3.5, 10.6 +/- 2.8, and 11.8 +/- 2.8 c are measured in three distinct components of the jet (q_0=0.5, H_0=65 km /s /Mpc are used through out this paper). Highly polarised emission is detected on VLBI scales in the region in which the jet bends sharply to the north-west. The spectral index distribution of the source shows that the strongest compact component has a flat spectrum, and the extended jet has a steep spectrum. A helical trajectory along the surface of a cone was proposed based on the conservation laws for kinetic energy and momentum to explain the observed phenomena, which is in a good agreement with the observed results on scales of 1 mas to 1 arcsec.
