Quantum-critical spin dynamics in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid studied with muon-spin relaxation

We demonstrate that quantum-critical spin dynamics can be probed in high magnetic fields using muon-spin relaxation ($μ^{+}$SR). Our model system is the strong-leg spin ladder bis(2,3-dimethylpyridinium) tetrabromocuprate (DIMPY). In the gapless Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase we observe finite-temperature scaling of the $μ^{+}$SR $1/T_1$ relaxation rate which allows us to determine the Luttinger parameter $K$. We discuss the benefits and limitations of local probes compared with inelastic neutron scattering.

Muon-spin relaxation study of the double perovskite insulators Sr$_{2}B$OsO$_6$ ($B={\rm Fe, Y, In}$)

We present the results of zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements made on the double perovskite insulators Sr$_{2}B$OsO$_6$ ($B={\rm Fe, Y, In}$). Spontaneous muon-spin precession indicative of quasistatic long range magnetic ordering is observed in Sr$_{2}$FeOsO$_6$ within the AF1 antiferromagnetic phase for temperatures below $T_{\rm N}=135 \pm 2~{\rm K}$. Upon cooling below $T_2 \approx 67~{\rm K}$ the oscillations cease to be resolvable owing to the coexistence of the AF1 and AF2 phases, which leads to a broader range of internal magnetic fields. Using density functional calculations we identify a candidate muon stopping site within the unit cell, which dipole field simulations show to be consistent with the proposed magnetic structure. The possibility of incommensurate magnetic ordering is discussed for temperatures below $T_{\rm N}=53~{\rm K}$ and 25~K for Sr$_{2}$YOsO$_6$ and Sr$_{2}$InOsO$_6$, respectively.

Weak magnetic transitions in pyrochlore Bi2Ir2O7

Muon spin relaxation measurements on Bi2Ir2O7 show that it undergoes a bulk magnetic transition at 1.84(3) K. This is accompanied by increases in the muon spin relaxation rate and the amplitude of the non-relaxing part of the signal. The magnetic field experienced by muons is estimated to be 0.7 mT at low-temperature, around two orders of magnitude smaller than that in other pyrochlore iridates. These results suggest that the low-temperature state represents ordering of exceptionally small magnetic moments with persistent weak dynamics. The relaxation rate increases further below 0.23(4) K, coincident with a growth in the specific heat, suggesting the existence of a second low-temperature magnetic transition.

Persistent dynamics in the S=1/2 quasi-one-dimensional chain compound Rb4Cu(MoO4)3 probed with muon-spin relaxation

We report the results of muon-spin relaxation measurements on the low-dimensional antiferromagnet Rb4Cu(MoO4)3. No long-range magnetic order is observed down to 50 mK implying a ratio T_N/J<0.005 (where J is the principal exchange strength along the spin chains) and an effective ratio of interchain to intrachain exchange of |J_perp/J|<2 x 10^-3, making the material an excellent realization of a one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We probe the persistent spin excitations at low temperatures and find that ballistic spin transport dominates the excitations detected below 0.3 K.

Probing magnetic order in LiMPO4, M = Ni, Co, Fe and lithium diffusion in LixFePO4

Muon spin relaxation measurements are reported on three members of the LixMPO4 series. The magnetic properties of stoichiometric samples with M = Ni, Co, Fe, were investigated at low-temperature. In LiNiPO4 we observe different forms of the muon decay asymmetry in the commensurate and incommensurate antiferromagnetic phases, accompanied by a change in the temperature dependence of the muon oscillation frequency. In LiCoPO4 the form of the muon decay asymmetry indicates that the correlation between layers decreases as the Neel temperature is approached from below. LiFePO4 shows more conventional behaviour, typical for an antiferromagnet. Measurements on LixFePO4 with x = 0.8, 0.9, and 1 show evidence for lithium diffusion below ~250 K and muon diffusion dominating the form of the relaxation at higher temperature. The thermally activated form of the observed hopping rate suggests an activation barrier for lithium diffusion of ~ 100 meV and a diffusion constant of D_Li ~ 10^-10 - 10^-9 cm2/s at room temperature.

Measurement of the internal magnetic field in the correlated iridates Ca$_4$IrO$_6$, Ca$_5$Ir$_3$O$_{12}$, Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

Oxides containing iridium ions display a range of magnetic and conducting properties that depend on the delicate balance between interactions and are controlled, at least in part, by the details of the crystal architecture. We have used muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR) to study the local field in four iridium oxides, Ca$_4$IrO$_6$, Ca$_5$Ir$_3$O$_{12}$, Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, which show contrasting behavior. Our $μ$SR data on Ca$_4$IrO$_6$ and Ca$_5$Ir$_3$O$_{12}$ are consistent with conventional antiferromagnetism where quasistatic magnetic order develops below $T_{\rm N}=13.85(6)$ K and 7.84(7) K respectively. A lower internal field is observed for Ca$_5$Ir$_3$O$_{12}$, as compared to Ca$_4$IrO$_6$ reflecting the presence of both Ir$^{4+}$ and Ir$^{5+}$ ions, resulting in a more magnetically dilute structure. Muon precession is only observed over a restricted range of temperature in Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, while the Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ displays more complex behavior, with the $μ$SR signal containing a single, well-resolved precession signal below $T_{\rm N}=230$\,K, which splits into two precession signals at low temperature following a reorientation of the spins in the ordered state.

The phase transition in the localized ferromagnet EuO probed by muSR

We report results of muon spin rotation measurements performed on the ferromagnetic semiconductor EuO, which is one of the best approximations to a localized ferromagnet. We argue that implanted muons are sensitive to the internal field primarily through a combination of hyperfine and Lorentz fields. The temperature dependences of the internal field and the relaxation rate have been measured and are compared with previous theoretical predictions.

Muon spin relaxation investigation of magnetic ordering in the hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites [(CH3)2NH2]M(HCOO)3, M = Ni,Co,Mn,Cu

Muon spin relaxation measurements are reported on samples of dimethylammonium metal formates containing magnetic divalent nickel, cobalt, manganese, and copper ions. These hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites exhibit weak ferromagnetism and are, apart from the copper system, multiferroics with well separated magnetic and antiferroelectric transitions. We use muons to follow the sublattice magnetization, observing the effect of the spin reorientation transitions below TN and the criticality approaching TN. The multiferroic samples have three-dimensional antiferromagnetic interactions, but the copper sample shows quasi-one-dimensional behavior due to its Jahn-Teller distorted structure, with a ratio of its inter- and intrachain exchange constants j/J=0.037.

Muon-spin relaxation and heat capacity measurements on the magnetoelectric and multiferroic pyroxenes LiFeSi2O6 and NaFeSi2O6

The results of muon-spin relaxation and heat capacity measurements on two pyroxene compounds LiFeSi2O6 and NaFeSi2O6 demonstrate that despite their underlying structural similarity the magnetic ordering is considerably different. In LiFeSi2O6 a single muon precession frequency is observed below TN, consistent with a single peak at TN in the heat capacity and a commensurate magnetic structure. In applied magnetic fields the heat capacity peak splits in two. In contrast, for natural NaFeSi2O6, where multiferroicity has been observed in zero-magnetic-field, a rapid Gaussian depolarization is observed showing that the magnetic structure is more complex. Synthetic NaFeSi2O6 shows a single muon precession frequency but with a far larger damping rate than in the lithium compound. Heat capacity measurements reproduce the phase diagrams previously derived from other techniques and demonstrate that the magnetic entropy is mostly associated with the build up of correlations in the quasi-one-dimensional Fe3+ chains.

Spin freezing and dynamics in Ca_{3}Co_{2-x}Mn_{x}O_{6} (x ~ 0.95) investigated with implanted muons: disorder in the anisotropic next-nearest neighbor Ising model

We present a muon-spin relaxation investigation of the Ising chain magnet Ca_{3}Co_{2-x}Mn_{x}O_{6} (x~0.95). We find dynamic spin fluctuations persisting down to the lowest measured temperature of 1.6 K. The previously observed transition at around T ~18 K is interpreted as a subtle change in dynamics for a minority of the spins coupling to the muon that we interpret as spins locking into clusters. The dynamics of this fraction of spins freeze below a temperature T_{SF}~8 K, while a majority of spins continue to fluctuate. An explanation of the low temperature behavior is suggested in terms of the predictions of the anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor Ising model.

Muon spin relaxation study of LaTiO3 and YTiO3

We report muon spin relaxation measurements on two Ti3+ containing perovskites, LaTiO3 and YTiO3, which display long range magnetic order at low temperature. For both materials, oscillations in the time-dependence of the muon polarization are observed which are consistent with three-dimensional magnetic order. From our data we identify two magnetically inequivalent muon stopping sites. The muon spin relaxation results are compared with the magnetic structures of these compounds previously derived from neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation studies on structurally similar compounds.

Anomalous temperature evolution of the internal magnetic field distribution in the charge-ordered triangular antiferromagnet AgNiO2

Zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements of the frustrated triangular quantum magnet AgNiO2 are consistent with a model of charge disproportionation that has been advanced to explain the structural and magnetic properties of this compound. Below an ordering temperature of T_N=19.9(2) K we observe six distinct muon precession frequencies, due to the magnetic order, which can be accounted for with a model describing the probable muon sites. The precession frequencies show an unusual temperature evolution which is suggestive of the separate evolution of two opposing magnetic sublattices.

Muon-fluorine entangled states in molecular magnets

The information accessible from a muon-spin relaxation experiment is often limited since we lack knowledge of the precise muon stopping site. We demonstrate here the possibility of localizing a spin polarized muon in a known stopping state in a molecular material containing fluorine. The muon-spin precession that results from the entangled nature of the muon-spin and surrounding nuclear spins is sensitive to the nature of the stopping site and we use this property to identify three classes of site. We are also able to describe the extent to which the muon distorts its surroundings.

A muon-spin relaxation study of BiMnO3

We present the results of muon-spin relaxation measurements on ferromagnetic BiMnO3. Below T_C=98.0(1) K oscillations in the time-dependence of the muon polarization are observed, characteristic of a quasistatic magnetic field at a single muon site, allowing us to probe the critical behaviour associated with the magnetic phase transition. We are able to suggest candidate muon sites on the basis of dipole field calculations. Close to T_C, fluctuations of the Mn^3+ moments are characteristic of critical behaviour while there is a sharp crossover to a region of fast dynamic fluctuations at higher temperatures.

Magnetism in Geometrically Frustrated YMnO3 Under Hydrostatic Pressure Studied with Implanted Muons

The rare-earth ferroelectromagnet YMnO3 consists of weakly coupled triangular layers of S=2 spins. Below T_N ~ 70 K muon-spin relaxation data show two oscillatory relaxing signals due to magnetic order, with no relaxing signal resolvable (which would be expected for different coexisting spin distributions). The transition temperature T_N increases with applied hydrostatic pressure, even though the ordered moment decreases. These results suggest that pressure increases both the exchange coupling between the layers and the frustration within the layers.

Magnetism in the high-Tc analogue Cs2AgF4 studied with muon-spin relaxation

We present the results of a muon-spin relaxation study of the high-Tc analogue material Cs2AgF4. We find unambiguous evidence for magnetic order, intrinsic to the material, below T_C=13.95(3) K. The ratio of inter- to intraplane coupling is estimated to be |J'/J|=1.9 x 10^-2, while fits of the temperature dependence of the order parameter reveal a critical exponent beta=0.292(3), implying an intermediate character between pure two- and three- dimensional magnetism in the critical regime. Above T_C we observe a signal characteristic of dipolar interactions due to linear F-mu-F bonds, allowing the muon stopping sites in this compound to be characterized.

The kagome staircase compounds Ni$_{3}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ and Co$_{3}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ studied with implanted muons

We present the results of muon-spin relaxation ($μ^{+}$SR) measurements on the kagome staircase compounds Ni$_{3}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ and Co$_{3}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$. The magnetic behavior of these materials may be described in terms of two inequivalent magnetic ion sites, known as spine sites and cross-tie sites. Our $μ^{+}$SR results allow us to probe each of these sites individually, revealing the distribution of the local magnetic fields near these positions. We are able not only to confirm the magnetic structures of the various phases proposed on the basis of bulk measurements but also to give an insight into the temperature evolution of the local field distribution in each phase.

Muon-spin relaxation measurements on the dimerized spin-1/2 chains NaTiSi2O6 and TiOCl

We report muon spin relaxation (muSR) and magnetic susceptibility investigations of two Ti3+ chain compounds which each exhibit a spin gap at low temperature, NaTiSi2O6 and TiOCl. From these we conclude that the spin gap in NaTiSi2O6 is temperature independent, with a value of 2*Delta=660(50)K, arising from orbital ordering at Too = 210K; the associated structural fluctuations activate the muon spin relaxation rate up to temperatures above 270K. In TiOCl we find thermally activated spin fluctuations corresponding to a spin gap 2*Delta=420(40)K below Tc1=67K. We also compare the methods used to extract the spin gap and the concentration of free spins within the samples from muSR and magnetic susceptibility data.
