Ultralow-power all-optical switching via a chiral Mach-Zehnder interferometer

All-optical switching increasingly plays an important role in optical information processing. However, simultaneous achievement of ultralow power consumption, broad bandwidth and high extinction ratio remains challenging. We experimentally demonstrate an ultralow-power all-optical switching by exploiting chiral interaction between light and optically active material in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). We achieve switching extinction ratio of 20.0(3.8) and 14.7(2.8) dB with power cost of 66.1(0.7) and 1.3(0.1) fJ/bit, respectively. The bandwidth of our all-optical switching is about 4.2 GHz. Our theoretical analysis shows that the switching bandwidth can, in principle, exceed 110 GHz. Moreover, the switching has the potential to be operated at few-photon level. Our all-optical switching exploits a chiral MZI made of linear optical components. It excludes the requisite of high-quality optical cavity or large optical nonlinearity, thus greatly simplifying realization. Our scheme paves the way towards ultralow-power and ultrafast all-optical information processing.

CONCERTO at APEX: installation and technical commissioning

We describe the deployment and first tests on Sky of CONCERTO, a large field-of-view (18.6arc-min) spectral-imaging instrument. The instrument operates in the range 130-310GHz from the APEX 12-meters telescope located at 5100m a.s.l. on the Chajnantor plateau. Spectra with R=1-300 are obtained using a fast (2.5Hz mechanical frequency) Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS), coupled to a continuous dilution cryostat with a base temperature of 60mK. Two 2152-pixels arrays of Lumped Element Kinetic Inductance Detectors (LEKID) are installed in the cryostat that also contains the cold optics and the front-end electronics. CONCERTO, installed in April 2021, generates more than 20k spectra per second during observations. We describe the final development phases, the installation and the first results obtained on Sky.

Néel and stripe ordering from spin-orbital entanglement in $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$

The rich phenomenology engendered by the coupling between the spin and orbital degrees of freedom has become appreciated as a key feature of many strongly-correlated electron systems. The resulting emergent physics is particularly prominent in a number of materials, from Fe-based unconventional superconductors to transition metal oxides, including manganites and vanadates. Here, we investigate the electronic ground states of $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$, a compound that is a rare embodiment of the spin-1 Kugel-Khomskii model on the square lattice -- a paradigmatic platform to capture the physics of coupled magnetic and orbital electronic orders. We have used resonant X-ray diffraction at the Cr-$K$ edge to reveal Néel magnetic order at the in-plane wavevector $\mathbf{Q}_N = (1/2, 1/2)$ below $T_N = 112$ K, as well as an additional electronic order at the 'stripe' wavevector $\mathbf{Q}_s = (1/2, 0)$ below T$_s$ $ \sim 50$ K. These findings are examined within the framework of the Kugel-Khomskii model by a combination of mean-field and Monte-Carlo approaches, which supports the stability of the spin Néel phase with subsequent lower-temperature stripe orbital ordering, revealing a candidate mechanism for the experimentally observed peak at $\mathbf{Q}_s$. On the basis of these findings, we propose that $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$ serves as a new platform in which to investigate multi-orbital physics and its role in the low-temperature phases of Mott insulators.

Charge Condensation and Lattice Coupling Drives Stripe Formation in Nickelates

Revealing the predominant driving force behind symmetry breaking in correlated materials is sometimes a formidable task due to the intertwined nature of different degrees of freedom. This is the case for La2-xSrxNiO4+δ in which coupled incommensurate charge and spin stripes form at low temperatures. Here, we use resonant X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy to study the temporal stability and domain memory of the charge and spin stripes in La2-xSrxNiO4+δ. Although spin stripes are more spatially correlated, charge stripes maintain a better temporal stability against temperature change. More intriguingly, charge order shows robust domain memory with thermal cycling up to 250 K, far above the ordering temperature. These results demonstrate the pinning of charge stripes to the lattice and that charge condensation is the predominant factor in the formation of stripe orders in nickelates.

Insight-HXMT observations of 4U~1636-536: Corona cooling revealed with single short type-I X-ray burst

Corona cooling was detected previously from stacking a series of short type-I bursts occurred during the low/had state of atoll outburst. Type-I bursts are hence regarded as sharp probe to our better understanding on the basic property of the corona. The launch of the first Chinese X-ray satellite Insight-HXMT has large detection area at hard X-rays which provide almost unique chance to move further in this research field. We report the first detection of the corona cooling by Insight-HXMT from single short type-I burst showing up during {\bf flare} of 4U 1636-536. This type-I X-ray burst has a duration of $\sim$13 seconds and hard X-ray shortage is detected with significance 6.2~$σ$ in 40-70 keV. A cross-correlation analysis between the lightcurves of soft and hard X-ray band, shows that the corona shortage lag the burst emission by 1.6 $\pm$1.2~s. These results are consistent with those derived previously from stacking a large amount of bursts detected by RXTE/PCA within a series of {\bf flares} of 4U 1636-536. Moreover, the broad bandwidth of Insight-HXMT allows as well for the first time to infer the burst influence upon the continuum spectrum via performing the spectral fitting of the burst, which ends up with the finding that hard X-ray shortage appears at around 40 keV in the continuum spectrum. These results suggest that the evolution of the corona along with the outburst{\bf /flare} of NS XRB may be traced via looking into a series of embedded type-I bursts by using Insight-HXMT.

Timing analysis of 2S 1417-624 observed with NICER and Insight-HXMT

We present a study of timing properties of the accreting pulsar 2S 1417-624 observed during its 2018 outburst, based on Swift/BAT, Fermi/GBM, Insight-HXMT and NICER observations. We report a dramatic change of the pulse profiles with luminosity. The morphology of the profile in the range 0.2-10.0keV switches from double to triple peaks at $\sim2.5$ $\rm \times 10^{37}{\it D}_{10}^2\ erg\ s^{-1}$ and from triple to quadruple peaks at $\sim7$ $\rm \times 10^{37}{\it D}_{10}^2\ erg\ s^{-1}$. The profile at high energies (25-100keV) shows significant evolutions as well. We explain this phenomenon according to existing theoretical models. We argue that the first change is related to the transition from the sub to the super-critical accretion regime, while the second to the transition of the accretion disc from the gas-dominated to the radiation pressure-dominated state. Considering the spin-up as well due to the accretion torque, this interpretation allows to estimate the magnetic field self-consistently at $\sim7\times 10^{12}$G.

Hot disk of the Swift J0243.6+6124 revealed by Insight-HXMT

We report on analysis of observations of the bright transient X-ray pulsar \src obtained during its 2017-2018 giant outburst with Insight-HXMT, \emph{NuSTAR}, and \textit{Swift} observatories. We focus on the discovery of a sharp state transition of the timing and spectral properties of the source at super-Eddington accretion rates, which we associate with the transition of the accretion disk to a radiation pressure dominated (RPD) state, the first ever directly observed for magnetized neutron star. This transition occurs at slightly higher luminosity compared to already reported transition of the source from sub- to super-critical accretion regime associate with onset of an accretion column. We argue that this scenario can only be realized for comparatively weakly magnetized neutron star, not dissimilar to other ultra-luminous X-ray pulsars (ULPs), which accrete at similar rates. Further evidence for this conclusion is provided by the non-detection of the transition to the propeller state in quiescence which strongly implies compact magnetosphere and thus rules out magnetar-like fields.

Spontaneous Magnetic Superdomain Wall Fluctuations in an Artificial Antiferromagnet

Collective dynamics often play an important role in determining the stability of ground states for both naturally occurring materials and metamaterials. We studied the temperature dependent dynamics of antiferromagnetically ordered superdomains in a square artificial spin lattice using soft x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. We observed an exponential slowing down of superdomain wall motion below the AF onset temperature, similar to the behavior of typical bulk antiferromagnets. Using a continuous time random walk model we show that these superdomain walls undergo low-temperature ballistic and high-temperature diffusive motions.

In-orbit demonstration of X-ray pulsar navigation with the Insight-HXMT satellite

In this work, we report the in-orbit demonstration of X-ray pulsar navigation with Insight-Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT), which was launched on Jun. 15th, 2017. The new pulsar navigation method 'Significance Enhancement of Pulse-profile with Orbit-dynamics' (SEPO) is adopted to determine the orbit with observations of only one pulsar. In this test, the Crab pulsar is chosen and observed by Insight-HXMT from Aug. 31th to Sept. 5th in 2017. Using the 5-day-long observation data, the orbit of Insight-HXMT is determined successfully with the three telescopes onboard - High Energy X-ray Telescope (HE), Medium Energy X-ray Telescope (ME) and Low Energy X-ray Telescope (LE) - respectively. Combining all the data, the position and velocity of the Insight-HXMT are pinpointed to within 10 km (3 sigma) and 10 m/s (3 sigma), respectively.

Design and performance of the LHCb trigger and full real-time reconstruction in Run 2 of the LHC

The LHCb collaboration has redesigned its trigger to enable the full offline detector reconstruction to be performed in real time. Together with the real-time alignment and calibration of the detector, and a software infrastructure to make persistent the high-level physics objects produced during real-time processing, this redesign enabled the widespread deployment of real-time analysis during Run 2. We describe the design of the Run 2 trigger and real-time reconstruction, and present data-driven performance measurements for a representative sample of LHCb's physics programme.

Insight-HXMT observations of the New Black Hole Candidate MAXI J1535-571: timing analysis

We present the X-ray timing results of the new black hole candidate (BHC) MAXI J1535-571 during its 2017 outburst from Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (\emph{Insight}-HXMT) observations taken from 2017 September 6 to 23. Following the definitions given by \citet{Belloni2010}, we find that the source exhibits state transitions from Low/Hard state (LHS) to Hard Intermediate state (HIMS) and eventually to Soft Intermediate state (SIMS). Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are found in the intermediate states, which suggest different types of QPOs. With the large effective area of \emph{Insight}-HXMT at high energies, we are able to present the energy dependence of the QPO amplitude and centroid frequency up to 100 keV which is rarely explored by previous satellites. We also find that the phase lag at the type-C QPOs centroid frequency is negative (soft lags) and strongly correlated with the centroid frequency. By assuming a geometrical origin of type-C QPOs, the source is consistent with being a high inclination system.

Persistent Charge Density Wave Memory in a Cuprate Superconductor

Although charge density wave (CDW) correlations appear to be a ubiquitous feature of the superconducting cuprates, their disparate properties suggest a crucial role for coupling or pinning of the CDW to lattice deformations and disorder. While diffraction intensities can demonstrate the occurrence of CDW domain formation, the lack of scattering phase information has limited our understanding of this process. Here, we report coherent resonant x-ray speckle correlation analysis, which directly determines the reproducibility of CDW domain patterns in La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 (LBCO 1/8) with thermal cycling. While CDW order is only observed below 54 K, where a structural phase transition results in equivalent Cu-O bonds, we discover remarkably reproducible CDW domain memory upon repeated cycling to temperatures well above that transition. That memory is only lost on cycling across the transition at 240(3) K that restores the four-fold symmetry of the copper-oxide planes. We infer that the structural-domain twinning pattern that develops below 240 K determines the CDW pinning landscape below 54 K. These results open a new view into the complex coupling between charge and lattice degrees of freedom in superconducting cuprates.

Matrix-assisted fabrication and exotic charge mobility of (Li,Fe)OHFeSe superconductor films

Superconducting (Li1-xFex)OHFe1-ySe films are attractive for both the basic research and practical application. However, the conventional vapor deposition techniques are not applicable in synthesizing the films of such a complex system. So no intrinsic charge transport measurements on the films are available so far to reveal the nature of charge carriers, which is fundamental to understanding the iron-based superconductivity mechanism. Herein we report a soft chemical film technique (matrix-assisted hydrothermal epitaxial growth), by which we have succeeded in growing a series of (Li1-xFex)OHFe1-ySe films covering the whole superconducting regime, with the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) from 4 K up to 42 K. This film technique opens up a new way for fabricating other complex functional materials as well. Furthermore, our systematic transport investigation on the film samples indicates that both the electron and hole carriers contribute to the charge transport, with the scattering rates deviating from the Fermi liquid. We find that the superconductivity occurs upon the electron and hole mobility becoming divergent. And in the high Tc samples, the electron carriers are found much more mobile than the holes, a feature distinct from the low Tc samples. Hence, our transport results provide key insights into the underlying physics for iron-based high-Tc superconductivity.

Static Charge Density Wave Order in the Superconducting State of La2-xBaxCuO4

Charge density wave (CDW) correlations feature prominently in the phase diagram of the cuprates, motivating competing theories of whether fluctuating CDW correlations aid superconductivity or whether static CDW order coexists with superconductivity in inhomogeneous or spatially modulated states. Here we report Cu $L$-edge resonant x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) measurements of CDW correlations in superconducting La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ $x=0.11$. Static CDW order is shown to exist in the superconducting state at low temperatures and to persist up to at least 85\% of the CDW transition temperature. We discuss the implications of our observations for how \emph{nominally} competing order parameters can coexist in the cuprates.

Optical melting of the transverse Josephson plasmon: a comparison between bilayer and trilayer cuprates

We report on an investigation of the redistribution of interlayer coherence in the trilayer cuprate Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10. The experiment is performed under the same apical-oxygen phonon excitation discussed in the past for the bilayer cuprate YBa2Cu3O6.5. In Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10, we observe a similar spectral weight loss at the transverse plasma mode resonance seen in YBa2Cu3O6.5. However, this feature is not accompanied by light-enhanced interlayer coherence that was seen in YBa2Cu3O6+x, for which the transverse plasma mode is observed at equilibrium even in the normal state. These new observations offer new experimental perspective in the context of the physics of light-enhanced interlayer coupling in various cuprates.

Improved Measurement of the Reactor Antineutrino Flux and Spectrum at Daya Bay

A new measurement of the reactor antineutrino flux and energy spectrum by the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment is reported. The antineutrinos were generated by six 2.9~GW$_{\mathrm{th}}$ nuclear reactors and detected by eight antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (560~m and 600~m flux-weighted baselines) and one far (1640~m flux-weighted baseline) underground experimental halls. With 621 days of data, more than 1.2 million inverse beta decay (IBD) candidates were detected. The IBD yield in the eight detectors was measured, and the ratio of measured to predicted flux was found to be $0.946\pm0.020$ ($0.992\pm0.021$) for the Huber+Mueller (ILL+Vogel) model. A 2.9~$σ$ deviation was found in the measured IBD positron energy spectrum compared to the predictions. In particular, an excess of events in the region of 4-6~MeV was found in the measured spectrum, with a local significance of 4.4~$σ$. A reactor antineutrino spectrum weighted by the IBD cross section is extracted for model-independent predictions.

Multiple supersonic phase fronts launched at a complex-oxide hetero-interface

Selective optical excitation of a substrate lattice can drive phase changes across hetero-interfaces. This phenomenon is a non-equilibrium analogue of static strain control in heterostructures and may lead to new applications in optically controlled phase change devices. Here, we make use of time-resolved non-resonant and resonant x-ray diffraction to clarify the underlying physics, and to separate different microscopic degrees of freedom in space and time. We measure the dynamics of the lattice and that of the charge disproportionation in NdNiO3, when an insulator-metal transition is driven by coherent lattice distortions in the LaAlO3 substrate. We find that charge redistribution propagates at supersonic speeds from the interface into the NdNiO3 film, followed by a sonic lattice wave. When combined with measurements of magnetic disordering and of the metal-insulator transition, these results establish a hierarchy of events for ultrafast control at complex oxide hetero-interfaces.

Limits on Active to Sterile Neutrino Oscillations from Disappearance Searches in the MINOS, Daya Bay, and Bugey-3 Experiments

Searches for a light sterile neutrino have been performed independently by the MINOS and the Daya Bay experiments using the muon (anti)neutrino and electron antineutrino disappearance channels, respectively. In this Letter, results from both experiments are combined with those from the Bugey-3 reactor neutrino experiment to constrain oscillations into light sterile neutrinos. The three experiments are sensitive to complementary regions of parameter space, enabling the combined analysis to probe regions allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments in a minimally extended four-neutrino flavor framework. Stringent limits on $\sin^2 2θ_{μe}$ are set over 6 orders of magnitude in the sterile mass-squared splitting $Δm^2_{41}$. The sterile-neutrino mixing phase space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments is excluded for $Δm^2_{41} < 0.8$ eV$^2$ at 95% CL$_s$.
