Diffractive processes as a tool for searching for new physics

We show that the addition of detectors to tag the outgoing forward protons, at the LHC, will significantly enlarge the potential of studying New Physics. A topical example is Higgs production by the exclusive double-diffractive process, pp -> p+H+p. We discuss the production of Higgs bosons in both the SM and MSSM. We show how the predicted rates may be checked at the Tevatron by observing the exclusive double-diffractive production of dijets, or $χ_c$ or $χ_b$ mesons, or $γγ$ pairs.

Diffractive W + 2 jet production: a background to exclusive H \to WW production at hadron colliders

Central exclusive double diffractive Higgs boson production, p p \to p + H + p, is now recognised as an important search scenario for the LHC. We consider the case when the Higgs boson decays to two W bosons, one of which may be off-mass-shell, that subsequently decay to the q qbar l nu final state. An important background to this is from the QCD process g g \to W q qbar, where the two gluons are required to be in a J_z=0, colour-singlet state. We perform an explicit calculation and investigate the salient properties of this potentially important background process.

The CEDAR Project

We describe the plans and objectives of the CEDAR project (Combined e-Science Data Analysis Resource for High Energy Physics) newly funded by the PPARC e-Science programme in the UK. CEDAR will combine the strengths of the well established and widely used HEPDATA database of HEP data and the innovative JetWeb data/Monte Carlo comparison facility, built on the HZTOOL package, and will exploit developing grid technology. The current status and future plans of both of these individual sub-projects within the CEDAR framework are described, showing how they will cohesively provide (a) an extensive archive of Reaction Data, (b) validation and tuning of Monte Carlo programs against these reaction data sets, and (c) a validated code repository for a wide range of HEP code such as parton distribution functions and other calculation codes used by particle physicists. Once established it is envisaged CEDAR will become an important Grid tool used by LHC experimentalists in their analyses and may well serve as a model in other branches of science where there is a need to compare data and complex simulations.

QCD Theory

Quantum Chromodynamics is an established part of the Standard Model and an essential part of the toolkit for searching for new physics at high-energy colliders. I present a status report on the theory of QCD and review some of the important developments in the past year.

Inelastic J/psi and Upsilon hadroproduction

We consider the prompt hadroproduction of J/psi, psi' and the Upsilon (1S,2S,3S) states caused by the fusion of a symmetric colour-octet two-gluon state and an additional gluon. The cross sections are calculated in leading-order perturbative QCD. We find a considerable enhancement in comparison with previous perturbative QCD predictions. Indeed, the resulting cross sections are found to be consistent with the values measured at the Tevatron and RHIC, without the need to invoke non-perturbative `colour-octet' type of contributions.

Parton distributions incorporating QED contributions

We perform a global parton analysis of deep inelastic and related hard-scattering data, including ${\cal O}(α_{\rm QED})$ corrections to the parton evolution. Although the quality of the fit is essentially unchanged, there are two important physical consequences. First, the different DGLAP evolution of u and d type quarks introduces isospin violation, i.e. $u^p \neq d^n$, which is found to be unambiguously in the direction to reduce the NuTeV $\sin^2θ_W$ anomaly. A second consequence is the appearance of photon parton distributions $γ(x,Q^2)$ of the proton and the neutron. In principle these can be measured at HERA via the deep inelastic scattering processes $e N \to eγX$; our predictions are in agreement with the present data.

Physics Interplay of the LHC and the ILC

Physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International e+e- Linear Collider (ILC) will be complementary in many respects, as has been demonstrated at previous generations of hadron and lepton colliders. This report addresses the possible interplay between the LHC and ILC in testing the Standard Model and in discovering and determining the origin of new physics. Mutual benefits for the physics programme at both machines can occur both at the level of a combined interpretation of Hadron Collider and Linear Collider data and at the level of combined analyses of the data, where results obtained at one machine can directly influence the way analyses are carried out at the other machine. Topics under study comprise the physics of weak and strong electroweak symmetry breaking, supersymmetric models, new gauge theories, models with extra dimensions, and electroweak and QCD precision physics. The status of the work that has been carried out within the LHC / LC Study Group so far is summarised in this report. Possible topics for future studies are outlined.

Physical Gluons and High $E_T$ Jets

We propose a more physical parameterization of the gluon distribution for global parton analyses of deep inelastic and related hard scattering data. In the new parameterization the gluon distribution at large x in the MSbar-scheme is driven by the valence quarks, which naturally produces a shoulder-like form at high x, and hence produces a better description of the Tevatron inclusive jet data. We perform the new analysis at both NLO and NNLO. The improvement is found to be even better at NNLO than at NLO. We make available the new sets of NLO and NNLO partons, which we denote by MRST2004.

Diffractive Higgs production and related processes

We review the signal, and the $b\bar{b}$ background, for Higgs production by the exclusive double-diffractive process, $pp \to p+H+p$, and its subsequent $H \to b\bar{b}$ decay, at the LHC. We discuss the production of Higgs bosons in both the SM and MSSM. We show how the predicted rates may be checked at the Tevatron by observing the exclusive double-diffractiveproduction of dijets, or $χ_c$ or $χ_b$ mesons, or $γγ$ pairs.

Diffractive gamma-gamma production at hadron colliders

We compute the cross section for exclusive double-diffractive gamma-gamma production at the Tevatron, $p{\bar p} \to p + γγ+ {\bar p}$, and the LHC. We evaluate both the gluon-gluon and quark-antiquark t-channel exchange contributions to the process. The observation of exclusive gamma-gamma production at the Tevatron will provide a check on the model predictions, and offer an opportunity to confirm the expectations for exclusive double-diffractive Higgs production at the LHC.

Heavy-quark production at large rapidities at hadron colliders

We investigate heavy-quark production as a function of the rapidity interval between two heavy quarks in hadronic collisions. We compare the results relevant to bottom production at the Tevatron and at LHC, obtained using exact leading-order and NLO pQCD production, as well as the contribution of the 4b channel with and without the addition of BFKL gluon radiation.

Update of MRST Parton Distributions

I present a brief summary of the most important updates in the MRST determinations of the NLO and NNLO parton distributions. I concentrate on uncertainties due to input assumptions and possible theoretical corrections, particularly isospin violation, QED corrections, NNLO and corrections at low Q^2 and small x.

The spread of the gluon k_t-distribution and the determination of the saturation scale at hadron colliders in resummed NLL BFKL

The transverse momentum distribution of soft hadrons and jets that accompany central hard-scattering production at hadron colliders is of great importance, since it has a direct bearing on the ability to separate new physics signals from Standard Model backgrounds. We compare the predictions for the gluonic k_t-distribution using two different approaches: resummed NLL BFKL and DGLAP evolution. We find that as long as the initial and final virtualities (k_t) along the emission chain are not too close to each other, the NLL resummed BFKL results do not differ significantly from those obtained using standard DGLAP evolution. The saturation momentum Q_s(x), calculated within the resummed BFKL approach, grows with 1/x even slower than in the leading-order DGLAP case.

Double-diffractive chi meson production at the hadron colliders

The double-diffractive production of chi_c and chi_b mesons, with a rapidity gap on either side, is studied, using both the Regge formalism and the perturbative QCD approach. Due to the rather low scale, the exclusive double-diffractive process pp \to p + chi + p is predicted to dominate, whereas the probability that the incoming protons dissociate is expected to be relatively small. We evaluate the corresponding chi production cross sections at the Tevatron and LHC energies. For the double-diffractive process with proton dissociation, it is possible to select events with large transverse momenta transferred through the rapidity gaps, by measuring the transverse energy, E_\perp, flows in the proton fragmentation regions. Then the large E_\perp provides a scale to justify the use of perturbative QCD, and to allow a spin-parity analysis of the centrally produced system to be performed, by studying the azimuthal angular correlations between the directions of the forward and backward E_\perp flows. The central production of the new X(3872) charmonium state is considered.

Uncertainties of predictions from parton distributions. I: Theoretical errors

We study the uncertainties in parton distributions, determined in global fits to deep inelastic and related hard scattering data, due to so-called theoretical errors. Amongst these, we include potential errors due to the change of perturbative order (NLO to NNLO), ln(1/x) and ln(1-x) effects, absorptive corrections and higher-twist contributions. We investigate these uncertainties both by including explicit corrections to our standard global analysis and by examining the sensitivity to changes of the x,Q^2,W^2 cuts on the data that are fitted. In this way we expose those kinematic regions where the conventional DGLAP description is inadequate. As a consequence we obtain a set of NLO, and of NNLO, conservative partons where the data are fully consistent with DGLAP evolution, but over a restricted kinematic domain. We also examine the potential effects of such issues as the choice of input parameterization, heavy target corrections, assumptions about the strange quark sea and isospin violation. Hence we are able to compare the theoretical errors with those uncertainties due to errors on the experimental measurements, which we studied previously. We use W and Higgs boson production at the Tevatron and the LHC as explicit examples of the uncertainties arising from parton distributions. For many observables the theoretical error is dominant, but for the cross section for W production at the Tevatron both the theoretical and experimental uncertainties are small, and hence the NNLO prediction may serve as a valuable luminosity monitor.

Hadronic Radiation Patterns in Vector Boson Fusion Higgs Production

We consider the hadronic radiation patterns for the generic process of bb + 2 forward jet production at the LHC, where the (centrally produced) bb originate either from a Higgs, a Z or from standard QCD production processes. A numerical technique for evaluating the radiation patterns for non-trivial final states is introduced and shown to agree with the standard analytic results for more simple processes. Significant differences between the radiation patterns for the Higgs signal and the background processes are observed and quantified. This suggests that hadronic radiation patterns could be used as an additional diagnostic tool in Higgs searches in this channel at the LHC.

MRST partons and uncertainties

We discuss uncertainties in the extraction of parton distributions from global analyses of DIS and related data. We present conservative sets of partons, at both NLO and NNLO, which are stable to x,Q^2,W^2 cuts on the data. We give the corresponding values of alpha(M_Z^2) and the cross sections for W production at the Tevatron.
