London penetration depth in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$T$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (T=Co, Ni) superconductors irradiated with heavy ions

Irradiation with Pb ions was used to study the effect of disorder on the in-plane London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, in single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$T$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (T=Co, Ni). An increase of the irradiation dose results in a monotonic decrease of the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, without affecting much the transition width. In both Co and Ni doped systems we find a power-law behavior, $Δλ(T) \propto T^n$, with the exponent $n$ systematically decreasing with the increase of disorder. This observation, supported by the theoretical analysis, conclusively points to a nodeless $s^\pm$ state with pairbreaking impurity scattering (interband) with strength being intermediate between Born and unitary limits.

Magneto-optical study of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$T$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ (T=Co, Ni) single crystals irradiated with heavy-ions

Optimally doped single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$T$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (T=Co, Ni) were irradiated with 1.4 GeV $^{208}$Pb$^{56+}$ ions at fluences corresponding to matching fields of $B_ϕ=0.1, 0.5, 1$ and 2 T. Magneto-optical imaging has been used to map the distribution of the magnetic induction in the irradiated samples. The imaging is complemented by the magnetization measurements. The results show a substantial enhancement of the apparent critical current densities as revealed by the much larger Bean penetration fields and an increase of the hysteretic magnetization. However, the effect depends on the compound, temperature and applied magnetic field. In \FeCo crystals, at 15 K and low fields, the enhancement appears to scale with the irradiation dose at a rate of about 0.27 MA$\cdot$cm$^{-2}$T$^{-1}$, whereas in \FeNi crystals, higher irradiation doses are less effective. Our results suggest that moderate irradiation with heavy ions is a an effective way to \emph{homogeneously} enhance the current-currying capabilities of pnictide superconductors.

Magnetoresistance Oscillations in Granular Superconducting Niobium Nitride Nanowires

We report on magnetoresistance oscillations in superconducting NbNx nanowires synthesized through ammonia gas annealing of NbSe3 precursor nanostructures. Even though the transverse dimensions of the nanowires are much larger than the superconducting coherence length, the voltage-current characteristics of these nanowires at low temperatures are reminiscent of one-dimensional superconductors where quantum phase slips are associated with the origin of dissipation. We show that both the magnetoresistance oscillations and voltage-current characteristics observed in this work result from the granular structure of our nanowires.

Growth and Superconductivity of FeSex Crystals

Iron selenide (FeSex) crystals with lateral dimensions up to millimeters were grown via a vapor self-transport method. The crystals consist of the dominant alpha - phase with trace amounts of beta- phase as identified by powder x-ray diffraction. With four-probe resistance measurements we obtained a zero-resistance critical temperature of 7.5 K and a superconducting onset transition temperature of up to 11.8 K in zero magnetic field as well as an anisotropy of 1.5 +- 0.1 for the critical field. Magnetization measurements on individual crystals reveal the co-existence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism.

Anisotropic phase diagram and strong coupling effects in Ba1-xKxFe2As2

We present a thermodynamic study of the phase diagram of single-crystal Ba1-xKxFe2As2 using specific heat measurements. In zero-magnetic field a clear step in the heat capacity of deltaC/Tc = 0.1 J/f.u.K2 is observed at Tc = 34.6K for a sample with x = 0.4. This material is characterized by extraordinarily high slopes of the upper critical field of dHc2,c/dT= -6.5 T/K and dHc2,ab/dT= -17.4 T/K and a surprisingly low anisotropy of gamma ~ 2.6 near Tc. A consequence of the large field scale is the effective suppression of superconducting fluctuations. Using thermodynamic relations we determine Ginzburg-Landau parameters of kappac ~ 100 and kappaab ~ 260 identifying Ba1-xKxFe2As2 as extreme type-II. The large value of the normalized discontinuity of the slopes of the specific heat at Tc, (Tc/deltaC)times delta(dC/dT)~ 6 indicates strong coupling effects in Ba1-xKxFe2As2.

Caloric Determination of the Upper Critical Fields and Anisotropy of NdFeAsO1-xFx Single Crystals

We present heat capacity measurements of the upper critical fields of single-crystal NdFeAsO1-xFx. In zero-magnetic field a clear step in the heat capacity is observed at Tc = 47K . In fields applied perpendicular to the FeAs-layers the step broadens significantly whereas for the in-plane orientation the field effects are small. This behavior is reminiscent of the CuO2-high-Tc superconductors and is a manifestation of pronounced fluctuation effects. Using an entropy conserving construction we determine the transition temperatures in applied fields and the upper critical field slopes of dHc2,a = -0.72 T/K and dHc2,ab = -3.1 T/K. Zero-temperature coherence lengths of xiab = 3.7 nm and xic = 0.9 nm and a modest superconducting anisotropy of gamma ~ 4 can be deduced in a single-band model.

Resistance Anomaly in Disordered Superconducting Films

We report on a resistance anomaly in disordered superconducting films containing arrays of irregularly distributed nanoscale holes. At high driving currents, peaks appear in the resistance as a function of temperature, with peak values up to 2% above the classic normal-state resistance. We attribute the observed resistance anomaly to dissipation-induced granularity which enhances the contributions from fluctuation-induced reduction of the density of states of the quasiparticles. The granular feature of a disordered superconducting film originates from the inhomogeneous temperature distribution caused by the variation of the local dissipation and/or heat transfer.

Two-band Effects in the Angular Dependence of Hc2 of MgB2 Single Crystals

The angular dependence of the upper critical field Hc2 of MgB2 single crystals is studied at various temperatures by means of specific heat and transport measurements in magnetic fields up to 17 T. Clear deviations from Ginzburg-Landau behavior are observed at all temperatures and are explained by two-band effects. The angular- and temperature dependence of the deviations are in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions based on band-structure calculations. Quantitative agreement is obtained with an interband coupling slightly stronger than the calculated, enabling band-structure anisotropies and interband coupling strength to be experimentally estimated. This provides a new pathway to the study of disorder and doping effects in MgB2.

Surface Contribution to the Superconducting Properties of MgB2 Single Crystals

We demonstrate direct evidence of possible surface superconductivity on small, well-shaped MgB2 single crystals. Transport measurements in the range H < 1.6 Hc2^c, where Hc2^c is the bulk upper critical field for the c axis, show non-Ohmic and strongly angular dependent resistivity. Studies of the alignment of H with selected crystal surfaces, transport and specific heat measurements on the same crystal, and a physical sculpturing of the crystal surfaces using a focused ion beam all support the conclusion. Similar, albeit less pronounced results are obtained for fields in the basal plane.

Crystal-lattice coupling to the vortex-melting transition in YBa2Cu3O7-d

Distinct discontinuities in the thermal expansion of the crystal lattice are observed at the melting-transition of the vortex lattice in a naturally untwinned reversible YBa2Cu3O7-d-single crystal using high-resolution dilatometry. This coupling between the vortex transition and the crystal lattice demonstrates that the crystal lattice is more than a mere host for the vortices, and it is attributed to a strong pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature and thus to the condensation energy at the vortex melting temperature.

Anisotropy of the Upper Critical Field and Critical Current in Single Crystal MgB$_2$

We report on specific heat, high magnetic field transport and $ac-$susceptibility measurements on magnesium diboride single crystals. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ for magnetic fields perpendicular and parallel to the Mg and B planes is presented for the first time in the entire temperature range. A very different temperature dependence has been observed in the two directions which yields to a temperature dependent anisotropy with $Γ\sim$ 5 at low temperatures and about 2 near $T_c$. A peak effect is observed in susceptibility measurements for $H \sim $2 T parallel to the $c-$axis and the critical current density presnts a sharp maximum for $H$ parallel to the ab-plane.

Nickel Antidot Arrays on Anodic Alumina Substrates

Large area nickel antidot arrays with density up to 10^10 /cm^2 have been fabricated by depositing nickel onto anodic aluminum oxide membranes that contain lattices of nanopores. Electron microscopy images show a high degree of order of the antidot arrays. Various sizes and shapes of the antidots were observed with increasing thickness of the deposited nickel. New features appear in the antidot arrays in both magnetization and transport measurements when the external magnetic field is parallel to the current direction, including an enhancement and a nonmonotonous field dependence of the magnetoresistance, larger values of the coercive field and remanence moment, and smaller saturation field.

Superconducting Transition and Phase Diagram of Single Crystal MgB2

The superconducting phase diagram of MgB2 was determined from magnetization, magneto-transport and the first single-crystal specific heat measurements. A zero-temperature in-plane coherence length of 8 nm is determined. The superconducting anisotropy increases from a value around 2 near Tc to above 4.5 at 22 K. For H||c a pronounced peak effect in the critical current occurs at the upper critical field. Evidence for a surface superconducting state is presented for H||c which might account for the wide spread in reported values of the anisotropy.

Two-Band Superconductivity in MgB2

The study of the anisotropic superconductor MgB2 using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy reveals two distinct energy gaps at Delta1=2.3 meV and Delta2=7.1 meV. Different spectral weights of the partial superconducting density of states (PDOS) are a reflection of different tunneling directions in this multi-band system. Our experimental observations are consistent with the existence of two-band superconductivity in the presence of interband superconducting pair interaction and quasiparticle scattering. Temperature evolution of the tunneling spectra follows the BCS scenario with both gaps vanishing at the bulk Tc. Indeed, the study of tunneling junctions exhibiting only the small gap (c-axis tunneling) clearly and reproducibly show that this gap persists up to the bulk Tc. The data confirm the importance of Fermi-surface sheet dependent superconductivity in MgB2 proposed in the multigap model by Liu et al.

Effect of High Energy Heavy Ion Irradiation on c-axis Oriented MgB2 Films

We report on the transport, magnetization, and scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on c-axis oriented thin films of MgB2 irradiated with high energy heavy ions of uranium and gold. We find a slight shift in the irreversibility and upper critical field lines to higher temperatures after irradiation. In addition, we observe an increase in the critical current at high temperatures near Tc2 and only a small change at low temperatures. Furthermore, we find no evidence for the existence of anisotropic pinning induced by heavy ion irradiation in this material. Tunneling spectra in an irradiated sample show a double gap structure with a flat background and very low zero-bias conductance, behaving in much the same way as the pristine unirradiated sample.

Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy in MgB2

We present scanning tunneling microscopy measurements of the surface of superconducting MgB2 with a critical temperature of 39K. In zero magnetic field the conductance spectra can be analyzed in terms of the standard BCS theory with a smearing parameter Gamma. The value of the superconducting gap is 5.2 meV at 4.2 K, with no experimentally significant variation across the surface of the sample. The temperature dependence of the gap follows the BCS form, fully consistent with phonon-mediated superconductivity in this novel superconductor. The application of a magnetic field induces strong pair-breaking as seen in the conductance spectra in fields up to 6 T.

Vortex Flow and Transverse Flux Screening at the Bose Glass Transition

We investigate the vortex phase diagram in untwinned YBaCuO single crystals with columnar defects. These randomly distributed defects, produced by heavy ion irradiation, are expected to induce a ``Bose Glass'' phase of localized vortices characterized by a vanishing resistance and a Meissner effect for magnetic fields transverse to the defect axis. We directly observe the transverse Meissner effect using an array of Hall probe magnetometers. As predicted, the Meissner state breaks down at temperatures Ts that decrease linearly with increasing transverse magnetic field. However, Ts falls well below the conventional melting temperature Tm determined by a vanishing resistivity, suggesting an intermediate regime where flux lines are effectively localized even when rotated off the columnar defects.

Structure of vortex liquid phase in irradiated BSCCO(2212) crystals

The c-axis resistivity in irradiated and in pristine BSCCO(2212) crystals is measured as a function of the in-plane magnetic field component at fixed out-of-plane component B_\perp in the vortex liquid phase at T=67 K. From this data we extract the dependence of the phase difference correlation length inside layers on B_\perp and estimate the average length of pieces of vortex lines confined inside columnar defects as a function of the filling factor f=B_\perp / B_ϕ. The maximum length, about 15 interlayer distances, is reached near f=0.35.
