High-field magnetization and magnetoresistance of the $A$-site ordered perovskite oxide CaCu$_{3}$Ti$_{4-x}$Ru$_{x}$O$_{12}$~($0 \le x \le 4$)

We have measured high-field magnetization and magnetoresistance of polycrystalline samples of the A-site ordered perovskite CaCu3Ti4-xRuxO12 (x=0 - 4) utilizing a non-destructive pulsed magnet. We find that the magnetization for x=0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 is nonlinear, and tends to saturate in high fields. This is highly nontrivial because the magnetization for x=0 and 4 is linear in external field up to the highest one. We have analyzed this field dependence based on the thermodynamics of magnetic materials, and propose that the external fields delocalize the holes on the Cu2+ ions in order to maximize the entropy. This scenario is qualitatively consistent with a large magnetoresistance of -70% observed at 4.2 K at 52 T for x=1.5.

Large thermal Hall coefficient in bismuth

We present a systematical study of thermal Hall effect on a bismuth single crystal by measuring resistivity, Hall coefficient, and thermal conductivity under magnetic field, which shows a large thermal Hall coefficient comparable to the largest one in a semiconductor HgSe. We discuss that this is mainly due to a large mobility and a low thermal conductivity comparing theoretical calculations, which will give a route for controlling heat current in electronic devices.

Structure-related transport properties of A-site ordered perovskite Sr3ErMn4-xGaxO10.5-d

We report x-ray diffraction, resistivity, thermopower, and magnetization of Sr3ErMn4-xGaxO10.5-d, in which A-site ordered tetragonal phase appears above x=1, and reveal that the system exhibits typical properties seen in the antiferromagnetic insulator with Mn3+. We succeed in preparing both A-site ordered and disordered phases for x=1 in different preparation conditions, and observe a significant decrease of the resistivity in the disordered phase. We discuss possible origins of the decrease focusing on the dimensionality and the disordered effect.

Thermal rectification in bulk materials with asymmetric shape

We investigate thermal rectification in a bulk material with a pyramid shape to elucidate shape dependence of the thermal rectification, and find that rectifying coefficient R is 1.35 for this shape, which is smaller than R=1.43 for a rectangular shape. This result is fully duplicated by our numerical calculation based on Fourier's law. We also apply this calculation to a given shape, and show a possible way to increase R depending on the shape.

An oxide thermal rectifier

We have experimentally demonstrated thermal rectification as bulk effect. According to a theoretical design of a thermal rectifier, we have prepared an oxide thermal rectifier made of two cobalt oxides with different thermal conductivities, and have made an experimental system to detect the thermal rectification. The rectifying coefficient of the device is found to be 1.43, which is in good agreement with the numerical calculation.

Direct observation of strong correlations near the band insulator regime of Bi misfit cobaltates

We present the first angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurement of Fermi Surface in the "misfit" cobaltate [Bi2Ba2O4].[CoO2]~2. This compound contains the same triangular Co planes as Na cobaltates, but in a different 3D environment. Our data establish the similarity of their electronic structure. We propose that the peculiar lineshape of all cobaltates is of the "peak-dip-hump" type, due to strong many-body effects. We detect a progressive transfer of spectral weight from the quasiparticle feature near Ef to a broad hump in misfit phases where Ba is replaced by Sr or Ca. This indicates stronger many-body interactions in proximity of the band insulator regime, which we attribute to the presence of unusual magnetic excitations.

Room-temperature ferromagnetism in Sr_(1-x)Y_xCoO_(3-delta) (0.2 < x < 0.25)

We have measured magnetic susceptibility and resistivity of Sr$_{1-x}$Y$_x$CoO$_{3-δ}$ ($x=$ 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.215, 0.225, 0.25, 0.3, and 0.4), and have found that Sr$_{1-x}$Y$_x$CoO$_{3-δ}$ is a room temperature ferromagnet with a Curie temperature of 335 K in a narrow compositional range of 0.2 $\leq x\leq$ 0.25. This is the highest transition temperature among perovskite Co oxides. The saturation magnetization for $x=$ 0.225 is 0.25 $μ_B$/Co at 10 K, which implies that the observed ferromagnetism is a bulk effect. We attribute this ferromagnetism to a peculiar Sr/Y ordering.

CaCu_3Ti_4O_12/CaTiO_3 Composite Dielectrics: A Ba/Pb-free Ceramics with High Dielectric Constants

We have measured dielectric properties of Ca$_{1+x}$Cu$_{3-x}$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ ($x$ = 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.9 and 3), and have found that Ca$_2$Cu$_2$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ (a composite of CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ and CaTiO$_3$) exhibits a high dielectric constant of 1800 with a low dissipation factor of 0.02 below 100 kHz from 220 to 300 K. These are comparable to (or even better than) those of the Pb/Ba-based ceramics, which could be attributed to a barrier layer of CaTiO$_3$ on the surface of the CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ grains. The composite dielectric ceramics reported here are environmentally benign as they do not contain Ba/Pb.

A novel heavy-fermion state in CaCu_3Ru_4O12

We have measured susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity, and thermopower of CaCu$_3$Ti$_{4-x}$Ru$_x$O$_{12}$ and CaCu$_{3-y}$Mn$_y$Ru$_4$O$_{12}$, and have found that CaCu$_3$Ru$_4$O$_{12}$ can be regarded as a heavy-fermion oxide in d-electron systems. The Kondo temperature is near 200 K, and the susceptibility (1.4$\times10^{-3}$ emu/Cu mol) and the electron specific heat coefficient (28 mJ/Cu molK$^2$) are moderately enhanced. The resistivity is proportional to $T^2$ at low temperatures, and satisfies the Kadowaki-Woods relation. The heavy-fermion state comes from the interaction between the localized moment of Cu 3d and the conduction electron of Ru 4d. An insulator-metal transition occurs between $x=1.5$ and 4 in CaCu$_3$Ti$_{4-x}$Ru$_x$O$_{12}$, which can be regarded as a transition from magnetic insulator to heavy-fermion metal.

Universal charge transport of the Mn oxides in the high temperature limit

We have found that various Mn oxides have the universal resistivity and thermopower in the high temperature limit. The resistivities and thermopowers of all the samples go toward constant values of 7$\pm$1 m$Ω$cm and $-79\pm$3 $μ$V/K, which are independent of carrier density and crystal structures. We propose that the electric conduction occurs in a highly localized way in the high temperature limit, where the exchange of entropy and charge occurs in the neighboring Mn$^{3+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ ions.
