Recurrence equations involving different orthogonal polynomial sequences and applications

Consider $\{p_n\}_{n=0}^{\infty}$, a sequence of polynomials orthogonal with respect to $w(x)>0$ on $(a,b)$, and polynomials $\{g_{n,k}\}_{n=0}^{\infty},k \in \mathbb{N}_0$, orthogonal with respect to $c_k(x)w(x)>0$ on $(a,b)$, where $c_{k}(x)$ is a polynomial of degree $k$ in $x$. We show how Christoffel's formula can be used to obtain mixed three-term recurrence equations involving the polynomials $p_n$, $p_{n-1}$ and $g_{n-m,k},m\in\{2,3,\dots, n-1\}$. In order for the zeros of $p_n$ and $G_{m-1}g_{n-m,k}$ to interlace (assuming $p_n$ and $g_{n-m,k}$ are co-prime), the coefficient of $p_{n-1}$, namely $G_{m-1}$, should be of exact degree $m-1$, in which case restrictions on the parameter $k$ are necessary. The zeros of $G_{m-1}$ can be considered to be inner bounds for the extreme zeros of the (classical or $q$-classical) orthogonal polynomial $p_n$ and we give examples to illustrate the accuracy of these bounds. Because of the complexity the mixed three-term recurrence equations in each case, algorithmic tools, mainly Zeilberger's algorithm and its $q$-analogue, are used to obtain them.

Diffractive Heavy Quarkonium Photo- and Electroproduction in QCD

Hard diffractive photo- and electroproduction of heavy vector mesons ($J/ψ$ and $Υ$) is evaluated within the leading $α_s\ln{Q^2 \overΛ_{QCD}^2}$ approximation of QCD. In difference from our earlier work on that subject, also the production of transversely polarized vector mesons is calculated. Special emphasis is placed on the role of the vector meson's $q\bar q$ light-cone wave function. In that context, conventional non-relativistic quarkonium models and a light-front QCD bound state calculation are critically examined and confronted with QCD expectations. Our numerical analysis finds a significant high momentum tail in the latter wave functions and a deviation from the expected asymptotic behavior of $ϕ_V(z,b=0)\propto z(1-z)$. We then design an interpolation to match the quarkonium models at large inter-quark separations with QCD expectations at small distances. We use these results to compare our predictions for the forward differential cross section of $J/ψ$ photo- and electroproduction with recent experimental results from HERA. In addition, our earlier discussion of $ρ^o$ electroproduction is updated in light of recent experimental and theoretical enhancements.

Soft-hard interplay and factorization for baryon production in the target fragmentation region in ep collisions

We discuss baryon production in the nucleon fragmentation region in deep inelastic scattering. The dependence of the nucleon spectra on Bjorken-$x$ is evaluated within the parton model and in QCD, and ways to look for the break-down of the DGLAP approximation via baryon production are suggested. We argue also that the leading neutron production in these small $x$ processes is rather insensitive to the pion parton densities of the nucleon.

Coherent Photo- and Leptoproduction of Vector Mesons from Deuterium

We discuss the coherent photo- and leptoproduction of vector mesons from deuterium at intermediate (virtual) photon energies, 3 GeV < nu < 30 GeV. These processes provide several options to explore the space-time evolution of small size quark-gluon configurations. Furthermore, we study the dependence of the production cross section on the energy and momentum transfer t due to variations of the finite longitudinal interaction length. Kinematic regions are determined where the production cross section is most sensitive to the final state interaction of the initially produced hadronic wave packet. For unpolarized deuteron targets this double scattering contribution can be investigated mainly at large values of the momentum transfer t. For polarized targets kinematic windows sensitive to double scattering are available also at moderate t. We suggest several methods for an investigation of color coherence effects at intermediate energies.

New approach to $^4$He charge distribution

We present a study of the $^4$He charge distribution based on realistic nucleonic wave functions and incorporation of the nucleon's quark substructure. The central depression of the proton point density seen in modern four-body calculations is too small by itself to lead to a correct description of the charge distribution. We utilize six-quark structures calculated in the Chromodielectric Model for N-N interactions, and we find a swelling of the proton charge distribution as the internucleon distance decreases. These charge distributions are combined with the $^4$He wave function using the Independent Pair Approximation and two-body distributions generated from Green's Function Monte Carlo calculations. We obtain a reasonably good fit to the experimental charge distribution without including meson exchange currents.

Vector Meson production in ep -> epV

The diffractive production of vector mesons in ep interactions at low x is a subject of heated debates. This chapter consists of four contributions written by the original authors and expresses the possible scenarios which are to be investigated experimentally.

Coherent $ρ$ Production from Polarized Deuterium

We discuss the coherent leptoproduction of vector mesons from polarized deuterium as a tool to investigate the evolution of small size quark-gluon configurations. Kinematic regions are determined where the final state interaction of the initially produced quark-gluon wave packet contributes dominantly to the production cross section. Two methods for an investigation of color coherence effects, which are appropriate for future experiments at HERMES, are suggested.

Color Transparency and Color Opacity in Coherent Production of Vector Mesons off Light Nuclei at small x

Coherent electroproduction of vector mesons off $^2$H and $^4$He is considered in the kinematics of deep inelastic scattering. Special emphasis is given to the $-t\sim 0.8-1$ GeV$^2$ region where the cross section is dominated by the interaction of the $q\bar q$ configuration in the $γ^*$ with two nucleons. These kinematics provide the unique possibilities to study quantitatively in vector meson production the onset of Color Transparency with increasing $Q^2$ as well as its gradual disappearance at very small $x$, i.e., perturbative Color Opacity.

Hard diffractive electroproduction of vector mesons in QCD

Hard diffractive electroproduction of longitudinally polarized vector mesons is calculated within the leading $α_s\ln{Q^2\overΛ_{QCD}^2}$ approximation of QCD using the leading order parton densities within the nucleon. Novel QCD features of the production of excited states and of the restoration of flavor symmetry are analyzed. At the onset of the asymptotic regime, our analysis finds an important role of quark Fermi motion within the diffractively produced vector mesons, and we suggest to use this effect to measure the high momentum tail of the wave function of the vector mesons. We deduce a kinematical boundary for the region of applicability of the decomposition of the hard amplitudes over powers of $Q^2$ and/or a limit on the increase of the cross sections of hard processes at small $x$, and briefly analyze its consequences. We also estimate the nuclear attenuation of the diffractive electroproduction of vector mesons and compare with estimates of the shadowing of the longitudinal structure function.

The "Hole" In He

The measurement and analysis of electron scattering from He-3 and He-4 by Sick and collaborators reported 20 years ago remains a matter of current interest. By unfolding the measured free-proton charge distribution, they deduced a depression in the central point nucleon density, which is not found in few-body calculations based on realistic potentials. We find that using wave functions from such calculations we can obtain good fits to the He charge distributions under the assumption that the proton charge size expands toward the center of the nucleus. The relationship to 6-quark Chromo-Dielectric Model calculations, is discussed. The expansion is larger than than the predictions of mean field bag calculations by others or our CDM calculations in the independent pair approximation. There is interest here in the search for a "smoking gun" signal of quark substructure.

Relativistic deformed mean-field calculation of binding energy differences of mirror nuclei

Binding energy differences of mirror nuclei for A=15, 17, 27, 29, 31, 33, 39 and 41 are calculated in the framework of relativistic deformed mean-field theory. The spatial components of the vector meson fields and the photon are fully taken into account in a self-consistent manner. The calculated binding energy differences are systematically smaller than the experimental values and lend support to the existency of the Okamoto--Nolen-Schiffer anomaly found decades ago in nonrelativistic calculations. For the majority of the nuclei studied, however, the results are such that the anomaly is significantly smaller than the one obtained within state-of-the-art nonrelativistic calculations.

The Nucleon's Antiquark Sea: A Virtual Meson Cloud or Gluons?

We study the possible contribution of the nucleon's virtual meson cloud to the sea quark distribution as observed in deep inelastic lepton scattering. We adjust the meson-nucleon cut-offs to the large-x tails of the antiquark distributions, find qualitatively different behavior in the flavor singlet and non-singlet channels and study the scale dependence of our results. We demonstrate that, within convolution models, to reproduce the sea quark distribution the relevant pion momenta should be around 0.8 GeV.

The Nucleon-Nucleon Interaction in the Chromo-Dielectric Soliton Model: Dynamics

The present work is an extension of a previous study of the nucleon-nucleon interaction based on the chromo-dielectric soliton model. The former approach was static, leading to an adiabatic potential. Here we perform a dynamical study in the framework of the Generator Coordinate Method. In practice, we derive an approximate Hill-Wheeler differential equation and obtain a local nucleon-nucleon potential as a function of a mean generator coordinate. This coordinate is related to an effective separation distance between the two nucleons by a Fujiwara transformation. This latter relationship is especially useful in studying the quark substructure of light nuclei. We investigate the explicit contribution of the one-gluon exchange part of the six-quark Hamiltonian to the nucleon-nucleon potential, and we find that the dynamics are responsible for a significant part of the short-range N-N repulsion.

The Nucleon's Virtual Meson Cloud and Deep Inelastic Lepton Scattering

We address the question whether the nucleon's antiquark sea can be attributed entirely to its virtual meson cloud and, in essence, whether there exists a smooth transition between hadronic and quark-gluon degrees of freedom. We take into account contributions from $π$ and $K$ mesons and compare with the nucleon's antiquark distributions which serve as a non-perturbative input to the QCD evolution equations. We elucidate the different behavior in the flavor singlet and non-singlet channels and study the dependence of our results on the scale $Q^2$. The meson-nucleon cut-offs that we determine give not only an indication on the size of the region within which quarks are confined in a nucleon, but we find that the scale of these form factors is closely related to the four-momentum transfer, $Q^2$, where gluons are resolved by a high energy probe, and that large meson loop momenta, $|{\bf k}| \approx 0.8$ GeV, contribute significantly to the sea quark distributions. While the agreement of our calculations with data-based parametrizations is satisfactory and scale independent for the flavor breaking share of the nucleon's antiquark sea, the flavor singlet component is quite poorly described. This hints the importance of gluon degrees of freedom.

QUARK MODEL DESCRIPTION OF THE N-N SYSTEM: MOMENTUM DISTRIBUTIONS, STRUCTURE FUNCTIONS AND THE EMC EFFECT

We employ a relativistic quark bag picture, the chromo-dielectric soliton model, to discuss the quarks' symmetry structure and momentum distribution in the $N$-$N$ system. Six-quark clusters are constructed in a constrained mean-field calculation. The corresponding Hamiltonian contains not only an effective interaction between the quarks and a scalar field, which is assumed to parameterize all non-perturbative effects due to the non-linearity of QCD, but also quark-quark interactions mediated through one-gluon-exchange. We also evaluate the quark light-cone distribution functions, characterizing inclusive deep-inelastic lepton scattering, for the nucleon as well as for the six-quark structures. We find a competition between a softening of the quarks' momenta through the increase of the confinement volume, and a hardening via the admixture of higher symmetry configurations due to the color-electrostatic one-gluon-exchange. These findings suggest an unexpected absence of many-nucleon, multi-quark effects, even though six-quark structures should represent a non-negligible part of the nuclear ground state.

Mesons and the Structure of Nucleons

The role of mesons, particularly the pion, in the structure of nucleons is reviewed and investigated. Since quark-antiquark pairs are likely to ``transform" into mesons at large distances, mesons are expected to contribute to nucleon structure. Their effects on the Gottfried sum rule, on the strangeness content of the nucleon, and on the spin of the nucleon are discussed.

The Nucleon-Nucleon Potential in the Chromo-Dielectric Soliton Model: Statics

We study the N-N interaction in the framework of the chromo-dielectric soliton model. Here, the long-range parts of the nonabelian gluon self-interactions are assumed to give rise to a color-dielectric function which is parameterized in terms of an effective scalar background field. The six-quark system is confined in a deformed mean field through an effective non-linear interaction between the quarks and the scalar field. The CDM is covariant, respects chiral invariance, leads to absolute color confinement and is free of the spurious long range Van der Waals forces which trouble non-relativistic investigations employing a confining potential. Six-quark molecular-type configurations are generated as a function of deformation and their energies are evaluated in a coupled channel analysis. By using molecular states instead of cluster model wave functions, all important six-quark configurations are properly taken into account. The corresponding Hamiltonian includes the effective interaction between the quarks and the scalar background field and quark-quark interactions generated through one gluon exchange treated in Coulomb gauge. When evaluating the gluonic propagators, the inhomogeneity and deformation of the dielectric medium are taken into account. Results for the adiabatic nucleon-nucleon potential are presented, and the various contributions are discussed. Finally, an outlook is given on how, in the next stage of our investigation, the dynamical effects will be incorporated by employing the generator coordinate method.

Electromagnetic Gauge Invariance of Chiral Hybrid Quark Models

In this work, we investigate the question, whether the conventional analysis of the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon, evaluated in the framework of the cloudy bag model (CBM) or other chirally invariant hybrid quark models utilizing the same philosophy, is gauge invariant. In order to address that point, we first formulate the CBM in a style that resembles the technique of loop integrals. Evaluating the self energy and the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon in that manner and comparing with the standard analysis where nonrelativistic perturbation theory is used, allows us to show that our approach is appropriate and to point out, what approximations are made in the standard derivation of the model. {}From the form of those loop integrals, we then show that additional diagrams are needed to preserve electromagnetic gauge invariance and we assess the corresponding corrections.
