A Systematic Observational Study on Galactic Interstellar Ratio 18O/17O. II. C18O and C17O J=2-1 Data Analysis

To investigate the relative amount of ejecta from high-mass versus intermediate-mass stars and to trace the chemical evolution of the Galaxy, we have performed with the IRAM 30m and the SMT 10m telescopes a systematic study of Galactic interstellar 18O/17O ratios toward a sample of 421 molecular clouds, covering a galactocentric distance range of 1-22 kpc. The results presented in this paper are based on the J=2-1 transition and encompass 364 sources showing both C18O and C17O detections. The previously suggested 18O/17O gradient is confirmed. For the 41 sources detected with both facilities, good agreement is obtained. A correlation of 18O/17O ratios with heliocentric distance is not found, indicating that beam dilution and linear beam sizes are not relevant. For the subsample of IRAM 30 m high-mass star-forming regions with accurate parallax distances, an unweighted fit gives 18O/17O = (0.12+-0.02)R_GC+(2.38+-0.13) with a correlation coefficient of R = 0.67. While the slope is consistent with our J=1-0 measurement, ratios are systematically lower. This should be caused by larger optical depths of C18O 2-1 lines, w.r.t the corresponding 1-0 transitions, which is supported by RADEX calculations and the fact that C18O/C17O is positively correlated with 13CO/C18O. After considering optical depth effects with C18O J=2-1 reaching typically an optical depth of 0.5, corrected 18O/17O ratios from the J=1-0 and J=2-1 lines become consistent. A good numerical fit to the data is provided by the MWG-12 model, including both rotating stars and novae.

Measurement of the Gamma-Ray Energy Spectrum beyond 100 TeV from the HESS J1843$-$033 Region

HESS J1843$-$033 is a very-high-energy gamma-ray source whose origin remains unidentified. This work presents, for the first time, the energy spectrum of gamma rays beyond $100\, {\rm TeV}$ from the HESS J1843$-$033 region using the data recorded by the Tibet air shower array and its underground muon detector array. A gamma-ray source with an extension of $0.34^{\circ} \pm 0.12^{\circ}$ is successfully detected above $25\, {\rm TeV}$ at $(α,\, δ) = (281.09^{\circ}\pm 0.10^{\circ},\, -3.76^{\circ}\pm 0.09^{\circ})$ near HESS J1843$-$033 with a statistical significance of $6.2\, σ$, and the source is named TASG J1844$-$038. The position of TASG J1844$-$038 is consistent with those of HESS J1843$-$033, eHWC J1842$-$035, and LHAASO J1843$-$0338. The measured gamma-ray energy spectrum in $25\, {\rm TeV} < E < 130\, {\rm TeV}$ is described with ${\rm d}N/{\rm d}E = (9.70\pm 1.89)\times 10^{-16} (E/40\, {\rm TeV})^{-3.26\pm 0.30}\, {\rm TeV}^{-1} {\rm cm}^{-2} {\rm s}^{-1}$, and the spectral fit to the combined spectra of HESS J1843$-$033, LHAASO J1843$-$0338, and TASG J1844$-$038 implies the existence of a cutoff at $49.5\pm 9.0\, {\rm TeV}$. Associations of TASG J1844-038 with SNR G28.6$-$0.1 and PSR J1844-0346 are also discussed in detail for the first time.

Observation of gamma rays up to 320 TeV from the middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula HESS J1849$-$000

Gamma rays from HESS J1849$-$000, a middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula (PWN), are observed by the Tibet air shower array and the muon detector array. The detection significance of gamma rays reaches $4.0\, σ$ and $4.4\, σ$ levels above 25 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively, in units of Gaussian standard deviation $σ$. The energy spectrum measured between $40\, {\rm TeV} < E < 320\, {\rm TeV}$ for the first time is described with a simple power-law function of ${\rm d}N/{\rm d}E = (2.86 \pm 1.44) \times 10^{-16}(E/40\, {\rm TeV})^{-2.24 \pm 0.41}\, {\rm TeV}^{-1}\, {\rm cm}^{-2}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$. The gamma-ray energy spectrum from the sub-TeV ($E < 1\, {\rm TeV}$) to sub-PeV ($100\, {\rm TeV} < E < 1\, {\rm PeV}$) ranges including the results of previous studies can be modeled with the leptonic scenario, inverse Compton scattering by high-energy electrons accelerated by the PWN of PSR J1849$-$0001. On the other hand, the gamma-ray energy spectrum can also be modeled with the hadronic scenario in which gamma rays are generated from the decay of neutral pions produced by collisions between accelerated cosmic-ray protons and the ambient molecular cloud found in the gamma-ray emitting region. The cutoff energy of cosmic-ray protons $E_{\rm p\, cut}$, cut is estimated at ${\rm log}_{10}(E_{\rm p,\, cut}/{\rm TeV}) = 3.73^{+2.98}_{-0.66}$, suggesting that protons are accelerated up to the PeV energy range. Our study thus proposes that HESS J1849$-$000 should be further investigated as a new candidate for a Galactic PeV cosmic-ray accelerator, PeVatron.

Programmable quantum emitter formation in silicon

Silicon-based quantum emitters are candidates for large-scale qubit integration due to their single-photon emission properties and potential for spin-photon interfaces with long spin coherence times. Here, we demonstrate local writing and erasing of selected light-emitting defects using fs laser pulses in combination with hydrogen-based defect activation and passivation. By selecting forming gas (N2/H2) during thermal annealing of carbon-implanted silicon, we form Ci centers while passivating the more common G-centers. The Ci center is a telecom S-band emitter with very promising spin properties that consists of a single interstitial carbon atom in the silicon lattice. Density functional theory calculations show that the Ci center brightness is enhanced by several orders of magnitude in the presence of hydrogen. Fs-laser pulses locally affect the passivation or activation of quantum emitters with hydrogen and enable programmable quantum emitter formation in a qubit-by-design paradigm.

A search for the missing baryons with X--ray absorption lines towards the blazar 1ES 1553+113

This paper presents an analysis of XMM X--ray spectra of the quasar 1ES 1553+113, in search for absorption lines from the intervening warm--hot intergalactic medium. A search for OVII, OVIII and NeIX resonance absorption lines was performed at eight fixed redshifts that feature OVI or HI broad Lyman--$α$ absorption lines that were previously detected from HST data. The search yielded one possible detection of OVII at a redshift z=0.1877 with an OVI prior, with a statistical significance that is equivalent to a 2.6-$σ$ confidence level. The spectra were also stacked at the wavelengths of the expected redshifted OVII and OVIII lines, but the analysis did not reveal evidence for the presence of additional X--ray absorbing WHIM. Moreover, the spectra were used to investigate two putative OVII absorption lines that were detected serendipitously in an earlier analysis of the same data by F. Nicastro and collaborators. The paper also presents a comprehensive statistical framework for cosmological inferences from the analysis of absorption lines, which makes use of cosmological simulations for the joint probability distributions of FUV and X--ray ions. Accordingly, we conclude that the new possible OVII absorption at z=0.1877 is consistent with a contribution from the hot WHIM to the baryon density in an amount of $Ω_{WHIM,X}/Ω_b = 44\pm22$\%. However, there are large systematic uncertainties associated with the temperature and abundances of the absorbers, and only a larger sample of X-ray sources can provide an accurate determination of the cosmological density of the WHIM.

Cryogenic sensor enabling broad-band and traceable power measurements

Recently, great progress has been made in the field of ultrasensitive microwave detectors, reaching even the threshold for utilization in circuit quantum electrodynamics. However, cryogenic sensors lack the compatibility with broad-band metrologically traceable power absorption measurements at ultralow powers, which limits their scope of applications. Here, we demonstrate such measurements using an ultralow-noise nanobolometer which we extend by an additional direct-current (dc) heater input. The tracing of the absorbed power relies on comparing the response of the bolometer between radio frequency (rf) and dc-heating powers traced to the Josephson voltage and quantum Hall resistance. To illustrate this technique, we demonstrate methods to calibrate the power that is delivered to the base temperature stage of a dilution refrigerator using our in-situ power sensor. As an example, we demonstrate the ability to measure accurately the attenuation of a coaxial input line between the frequencies of 50 MHz and 7 GHz with an uncertainty down to 0.1 dB at typical input power of -114 dBm.

Initial experimental results on a superconducting-qubit reset based on photon-assisted quasiparticle tunneling

We present here our recent results on qubit reset scheme based on a quantum-circuit refrigerator (QCR). In particular, we use the photon-assisted quasiparticle tunneling through a superconductor--insulator--normal-metal--insulator--superconductor junction to controllably decrease the energy relaxation time of the qubit during the QCR operation. In our experiment, we use a transmon qubit with dispersive readout. The QCR is capacitively coupled to the qubit through its normal-metal island. We employ rapid, square-shaped QCR control voltage pulses with durations in the range of 2--350 ns and a variety of amplitudes to optimize the reset time and fidelity. Consequently, we reach a qubit ground-state probability of roughly 97% with 80-ns pulses starting from the first excited state. The qubit state probability is extracted from averaged readout signal, where the calibration is based of the Rabi oscillations, thus not distinguishing the residual thermal population of the qubit.

Solar coronal heating from small-scale magnetic braids

Relaxation of braided coronal magnetic fields through reconnection is thought to be a source of energy to heat plasma in active region coronal loops. However, observations of active region coronal heating associated with an untangling of magnetic braids remain sparse. One reason for this paucity could be the lack of coronal observations with a sufficiently high spatial and temporal resolution to capture this process in action. Using new observations with high spatial resolution (250-270 km on the Sun) and high cadence (3-10 s) from the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) on board Solar Orbiter, we observed the untangling of small-scale coronal braids in different active regions. The untangling is associated with impulsive heating of the gas in these braided loops. We assess that coronal magnetic braids overlying cooler chromospheric filamentary structures are perhaps more common. Furthermore, our observations show signatures of spatially coherent and intermittent coronal heating during the relaxation of the magnetic braids. Our study reveals the operation of gentle and impulsive modes of magnetic reconnection in the solar corona.

Coherent dynamics of multi-spin $\rm V_B^-$ centers in hexagonal boron nitride

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has recently been demonstrated to contain optically polarized and detected electron spins that can be utilized for implementing qubits and quantum sensors in nanolayered-devices. Understanding the coherent dynamics of microwave driven spins in hBN is of crucial importance for advancing these emerging new technologies. Here, we demonstrate and study the Rabi oscillation and related dynamical phenomena of the negatively charged boron vacancy ($\rm V_B^-$) spins in hBN. We report on different dynamics of the $\rm V_B^-$ spins at weak and strong magnetic fields. In the former case the defect behaves like a single electron spin system, while in the latter case it behaves like a multi-spin system exhibiting the multiple-frequency dynamical oscillation like clear beat in Ramsey fringes. We also carry out theoretical simulations for the spin dynamics of $\rm V_B^-$ and reveal that the nuclear spins can be driven via the strong electric-nuclear coupling existing in $\rm V_B^-$ center, which can be modulated by the magnetic field and microwave field.

Interstellar Nitrogen Isotope Ratios: New NH3 Data from the Galactic Center out to the Perseus Arm

Our aim is to measure the interstellar 14N/15N ratio across the Galaxy, to establish a standard data set on interstellar ammonia isotope ratios, and to provide new constraints on the Galactic chemical evolution. The (J, K ) = (1, 1), (2, 2), and (3, 3) lines of 14NH3 and 15NH3 were observed with the Shanghai Tianma 65 m radio telescope (TMRT) and the Effelsberg 100 m telescope toward a large sample of 210 sources. One hundred fourty-one of these sources were detected by the TMRT in 14NH3. Eight of them were also detected in 15NH3. For 10 of the 36 sources with strong NH3 emission, the Effelsberg 100 m telescope successfully detected their 15NH3(1, 1) lines, including 3 sources (G081.7522, W51D, and Orion-KL) with detections by the TMRT telescope. Thus, a total of 15 sources are detected in both the 14NH3 and 15NH3 lines. Line and physical parameters for these 15 sources are derived, including optical depths, rotation and kinetic temperatures, and total column densities. 14N/15N isotope ratios were determined from the 14NH3/15NH3 abundance ratios. The isotope ratios obtained from both telescopes agree for a given source within the uncertainties, and no dependence on heliocentric distance and kinetic temperature is seen. 14N/15N ratios tend to increase with galactocentric distance, confirming a radial nitrogen isotope gradient. This is consistent with results from recent Galactic chemical model calculations, including the impact of superasymptotic giant branch stars and novae.

Grad's Distribution Function for 13 Moments based Moment Gas Kinetic Solver for Steady and Unsteady Rarefied flows: Discrete and Explicit Forms

Efficient modeling of rarefied flow has drawn widespread interest for practical engineering applications. In the present work, we proposed the Grad's distribution function for 13 moments-based moment gas kinetic solver (G13-MGKS) and the macroscopic governing equations are derived based on the moment integral of discrete Boltzmann equation in the finite volume framework. Numerical fluxes at the cell interface related to the macroscopic variables, stress and heat flux can be reconstructed from the Boltzmann integration equation at surrounding points of the cell interface directly, so the complicated partial differential equations with tedious implementation of boundary conditions in the moment method can be avoided. Meanwhile, the explicit expression of numerical fluxes is proposed, which could release the present solver the from the discretization and numerical summation in molecular velocity space. To evaluate the Grad's distribution function for 13 moments in the present framework, the G13-MGKS with the discrete and explicit form of numerical fluxes are examined by several test cases covering the steady and unsteady rarefied flows. Numerical results indicate that the G13-MGKS could simulate continuum flows accurately and present reasonable prediction for rarefied flows at moderate Knudsen number. Moreover, the tests of computations and memory costs demonstrate that the present framework could preserve the highly efficient feature.

Impact of strain and field ramp functional form on thermomagnetic instabilities in composite Nb3Sn wires with multi-filaments inside the superconducting coil

We theoretically analyze the effects of Cu/SC (superconductor) ratio, strain, and the ramp path on thermomagnetic instabilities of the superconducting coil. By considering the multi-filamentary structures, we find that a lower Cu/SC ratio leads to higher temperature peaks. The strain causes a higher frequency of flux jumps and higher voltage peaks. The temperatures recover to working temperature more difficultly and SC wires quench earlier in the presence of strain. For the jagged ramp cases, few flux jumps occur at the decreasing branch, whereas frequent flux jumps can be observed promptly when the applied current exceeds the pre-existing peak. Our simulated results agree well with experimental observations in Nb3Sn coils. Additionally, unlike the pulsed flux jumps observed in linear ramp cases, giant and prolonged flux jumps are observed at the increasing branch with a sinusoidal ramp path when the applied current is sufficiently large.

Pre-launch characterization of the spectrometer of Hard X-ray Imager (HXI) onboard the ASO-S mission

As one of the three payloads of the Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory (ASO-S), the pre-launch characterization of HXI includes the characterization of the collimator and the spectrometer. This article focuses on the pre-launch characterization of HXI's spectrometer, including detection efficiency, energy resolution, and energy to ADC channel (E-C) relationship. The detection efficiency characterization necessitates a sufficient number of calibrated energy points in the HXI observation energy range, with a refined measurement around the absorption edge of the lanthanum bromide crystal, and is calibrated with an X-ray beam. The characterization results are consistent with the simulations and show that the detection efficiency difference between detector modules is controlled within $\pm3\%$. Radioactive sources $^{133}\textrm{Ba}$ and $^{137}\textrm{Cs}$ are used to calibrate the energy resolution and E-C relationship. The characterization results show that all detector modules' energy resolutions are better than $26\%$ at 32 keV, meeting the design specification. And their E-C relationships vary regularly with voltage. All of the characterization results indicate that the flight model of the HXI spectrometer meets the performance requirements and is capable of performing on-orbit observation activities.

Demonstration of sub-GV/m Accelerating Field in a Photoemission Electron Gun Powered by Nanosecond $X$-Band Radiofrequency Pulses

Radiofrequency (RF) electron guns operating at high accelerating gradients offer a pathway to producing bright electron bunches. Such beams are expected to revolutionize many areas of science: they could form the backbone of next-generation compact x-ray free-electron lasers or provide coherent ultrafast quantum electron probes. We report on the experimental demonstration of an RF photoemission electron source supporting an accelerating field close to 400~MV/m at the photocathode surface. The gun was operated in an RF transient mode driven by short $\sim 9$~ns X-band (\SI{11.7}{\giga\hertz}) RF pulses. We did not observe any major RF breakdown or significant dark current over a three-week experimental run at high accelerating fields. The demonstrated paradigm provides a viable path to forming relativistic electron beams with unprecedented brightness.

Observation of the $π^2σ^2$-bond linear-chain molecular structure in $^{16}$C

Measurements of the $^2$H($^{16}$C,$^{16}$C$^{*}$$\rightarrow^4$He+$^{12}$Be or $^6$He+$^{10}$Be)$^2$H inelastic excitation and cluster-decay reactions have been carried out at a beam energy of about 23.5 MeV/u. A specially designed detection system, including one multi-layer silicon-strip telescope at around zero degrees, has allowed the high-efficiency three-fold coincident detection and therefore the event-by-event determination of the energy of the unstable nucleus beam. The decay paths from the $^{16}$C resonances to various states of the final $^{10}$Be or $^{12}$Be nucleus are recognized thanks to the well-resolved $Q$-value spectra. The reconstructed resonances at 16.5(1), 17.3(2), 19.4(1) and 21.6(2) MeV are assigned as the $0^+$, $2^+$, $4^+$ and $6^+$ members, respectively, of the positive-parity $(3/2_π^-)^2(1/2_σ^-)^2$-bond linear-chain molecular band in $^{16}$C, based on the angular correlation analysis for the 16.5 MeV state and the excellent agreement of decay patterns between the measurements and theoretical predictions. Moreover, another intriguing high-lying state was observed at 27.2(1) MeV which decays almost exclusively to the $\sim$6 MeV states of $^{10}$Be, in line with the newly predicted pure $σ$-bond linear-chain configuration.

Chemical design rules for non-fullerene acceptors in organic solar cells

Efficiencies of organic solar cells have practically doubled since the development of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs). However, generic chemical design rules for donor-NFA combinations are still needed. Such rules are proposed by analyzing inhomogeneous electrostatic fields at the donor-acceptor interface. It is shown that an acceptor-donor-acceptor molecular architecture, and molecular alignment parallel to the interface, results in energy level bending that destabilizes the charge transfer state, thus promoting its dissociation into free charges. By analyzing a series of PCE10:NFA solar cells, with NFAs including Y6, IEICO, and ITIC, as well as their halogenated derivatives, it is suggested that the molecular quadrupole moment of ca 75 Debye A balances the losses in the open circuit voltage and gains in charge generation efficiency.

Generation of Spin Defects by Ion Implantation in Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Optically addressable spin defects in wide-bandage semiconductors as promising systems for quantum information and sensing applications have attracted more and more attention recently. Spin defects in two-dimensional materials are supposed to have unique superiority in quantum sensing since their atomatic thickness. Here, we demonstrate that the negatively boron charged vacancy (V$ _\text{B}^{-} $) with good spin properties in hexagonal boron nitride can be generated by ion implantation. We carry out optically detected magnetic resonance measurements at room temperature to characterize the spin properties of V$ _\text{B}^{-} $ defects, showing zero-filed splitting of $ \sim $ 3.47 GHz. We compare the photoluminescence intensity and spin properties of V$ _\text{B}^{-} $ defects generated by different implantation parameters, such as fluence, energy and ion species. With proper parameters, we can create V$ _\text{B}^{-} $ defects successfully with high probability. Our results provide a simple and practicable method to create spin defects in hBN, which is of great significance for integrated hBN-based devices.

Panoramic SETI: on-sky results from prototype telescopes and instrumental design

The Panoramic SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) experiment (PANOSETI) aims to detect and quantify optical transients from nanosecond to second precision over a large field-of-view ($\sim$4,450 square-degrees). To meet these challenging timing and wide-field requirements, the PANOSETI experiment will use two assemblies of $\sim$45 telescopes to reject spurious signals by coincidence detection, each one comprising custom-made fast photon-counting hardware combined with ($f/1.32$) focusing optics. Preliminary on-sky results from pairs of PANOSETI prototype telescopes (100 sq.deg.) are presented in terms of instrument performance and false alarm rates. We found that a separation of $>$1 km between telescopes surveying the same field-of-view significantly reduces the number of false positives due to nearby sources (e.g., Cherenkov showers) in comparison to a side-by-side configuration of telescopes. Design considerations on the all-sky PANOSETI instrument and expected field-of-views are reported.
