Superconducting single-electron transistor coupled to a two dimensional electron gas: Transmission lines, dissipation, and charge averaging

We have developed a novel system consisting of a superconducting single-electron transistor (S-SET) coupled to a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), for which the dissipation can be tuned in the immediate vicinity of the S-SET. To analyze our results, we have developed a model of the environment for S-SET/2DEG systems that includes electromagnetic fluctuations coupled both through the S-SET leads and capacitively to the S-SET central island. We analyze this model, treating the leads as finite transmission lines, to find the probability function P(E) for exchanging energy E with the environment. We also allow for the possibility of low-frequency fluctuations of the S-SET offset charge. We compare our calculations with measurements of SET conductance versus 2DEG conductance and find good agreement for temperatures 100 mK, while unexplained discrepancies emerge for lower temperatures. By including the effects of charge averaging we are also able to predict the shape and evolution of IV curves as the 2DEG in the vicinity of the S-SET is changed.

Superconducting Single-Electron Transistor in a Locally Tunable Electromagnetic Environment: Dissipation and Charge Fluctuations

We have developed a novel system consisting of a superconducting single-electron transistor (S-SET) coupled to a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), for which the dissipation can be tuned in the immediate vicinity of the S-SET. Within linear response, the S-SET conductance varies nonmonotonically with increasing 2DEG impedance. We find good agreement between our experimental results and a model incorporating electromagnetic fluctuations in both the S-SET leads and the 2DEG, as well as low-frequency switching of the S-SET offset charge.

Charge Transport Processes in a Superconducting Single-Electron Transistor Coupled to a Microstrip Transmission Line

We have investigated charge transport processes in a superconducting single-electron transistor (S-SET) fabricated in close proximity to a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. The macroscopic bonding pads of the S-SET along with the 2DEG form a microstrip transmission line. We observe a variety of current-carrying cycles in the S-SET which we attribute to simultaneous tunneling of Cooper pairs and emission of photons into the microstrip. We find good agreement between these experimental results and simulations including both photon emission and photon-assisted tunneling due to the electromagnetic environment.

Radial Velocity Studies of Close Binary Stars.V

Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital velocity variations are presented for the fifth set of ten close binary systems: V376 And, EL Aqr, EF Boo, DN Cam, FN Cam, V776 Cas, SX Crv, V351 Peg, EQ Tau, KZ Vir. All systems are double-lined spectroscopic contact binaries (KZ Vir may be a low inclination, close, non-contact binary), with seven (all except EL Aqr, SX Crv and EQ Tau) being the recent photometric discoveries of the Hipparcos satellite project. The most interesting object is SX Crv, a contact system with an unprecedently low mass ratio, q=0.066+/-0.003, whose existence challenges the current theory of tidal stability of contact systems. Several of the studied systems are prime candidates for combined light and radial-velocity synthesis solutions.

Radial Velocity Studies of Close Binary Stars.IV

Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital velocity variations are presented for the fourth set of ten close binary systems: 44 Boo, FI Boo, V2150 Cyg, V899 Her, EX Leo, VZ Lib, SW Lyn, V2377 Oph, Anon Psc (GSC 8-324), HT Vir. All systems are double-lined spectroscopic binaries with only two of them not being contact systems (SW Lyn and GSC 8-324) and with five (FI Boo, V2150 Cyg, V899 Her, EX Leo, V2377 Oph) being the recent photometric discoveries of the Hipparcos satellite project. Five of the binaries are triple-lined systems (44 Boo, V899 Her, VZ Lib, SW Lyn, HT Vir). Three (or possibly four) companions in the triple-lined systems show radial-velocity changes during the span of our observations suggesting that these are in fact quadruple systems. Several of the studied systems are prime candidates for combined light and radial-velocity synthesis solutions.

Early-time spectroscopic observations of SN 1998aq in NGC 3982

Medium resolution spectroscopic observations of SN 1998aq made in April-May, 1998, are presented. We confirm its Type Ia classification based on the prominent Si II 6355 A line and other features similar to SNe Ia. No significant sign of hydrogen Balmer-alpha line was seen in high-resolution spectra taken at 8 days before maximum. Preliminary estimate of reddening and distance modulus, based on the correlation between the line depth ratio of two Si II features around 6000 A and BVRI light curves of Type Ia SNe, is presented. Moreover, H-alpha emission from the core of the Seyfert 2 type host galaxy NGC 3982 has also been detected.

Search For Non-Standard Model CP/T violation At Tau-Charm Factory

We systematically investigate the possibility of finding CP/T violation in the $τ$ sector at Tau-Charm Factory. CP/T violation may occur at $τ$ pair production process, expressed as electric dipole moment, and at $tau$ decay processes. By assuming that electric dipole moment as large as $10^{-19}$e-cm and CP/T violation effect orignating from $τ$ decay as large as $10^{-3}$ are observable at Tau-Charm Factory, we studied all the possible extensions of the SM which are relevent for generating CP/T violation in $τ$ sector. And we pointed there are a few kind of models, which are hopeful for generating such CP/T violation. For these models we consider all the theoretical and current experimental constraints and find that there exists some parameter space which will result in a measurable CP/T violation. Therefore we conclude that Tau-Charm Factory is a hopeful place to discover CP/T violation in $τ$ sector.
