Search for active-sterile neutrino mixing using neutral-current interactions in NOvA

We report results from the first search for sterile neutrinos mixing with active neutrinos through a reduction in the rate of neutral-current interactions over a baseline of 810\,km between the NOvA detectors. Analyzing a 14-kton detector equivalent exposure of 6.05$\times$10$^{20}$ protons-on-target in the NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 95 neutral-current candidates at the Far Detector compared with $83.5 \pm 9.7 \mbox{(stat.)} \pm 9.4 \mbox{(syst.)}$ events predicted assuming mixing only occurs between active neutrino species. No evidence for $ν_μ \rightarrow ν_{s}$ transitions is found. Interpreting these results within a 3+1 model, we place constraints on the mixing angles $θ_{24}<20.8^{\circ}$ and $θ_{34}<31.2^{\circ}$ at the 90% C.L. for $0.05~eV^2\leq Δm^2_{41}\leq 0.5~eV^2$, the range of mass splittings that produce no significant oscillations over the Near Detector baseline.

Constraints on Oscillation Parameters from $ν_e$ Appearance and $ν_μ$ Disappearance in NOvA

Results are reported from an improved measurement of $ν_μ\rightarrow ν_e$ transitions by the NOvA experiment. Using an exposure equivalent to $6.05\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target 33 $ν_e$ candidates were observed with a background of $8.2\pm0.8$ (syst.). Combined with the latest NOvA $ν_μ$ disappearance data and external constraints from reactor experiments on $\sin^22θ_{13}$, the hypothesis of inverted mass hierarchy with $θ_{23}$ in the lower octant is disfavored at greater than $93\%$ C.L. for all values of $δ_{CP}$.

Measurement of the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{23}$ in NOvA

This Letter reports new results on muon neutrino disappearance from NOvA, using a 14 kton detector equivalent exposure of $6.05\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the NuMI beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The measurement probes the muon-tau symmetry hypothesis that requires maximal mixing ($θ_{23} = π/4$). Assuming the normal mass hierarchy, we find $Δm^2 = (2.67 \pm 0.11)\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ and $\sin^2 θ_{23}$ at the two statistically degenerate values $0.404^{+0.030}_{-0.022}$ and $0.624^{+0.022}_{-0.030}$, both at the 68% confidence level. Our data disfavor the maximal mixing scenario with 2.6 $σ$ significance.

The D0 Run II Impact Parameter Trigger

Many physics topics to be studied by the D0 experiment during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron ppbar collider give rise to final states containing b--flavored particles. Examples include Higgs searches, top quark production and decay studies, and full reconstruction of B decays. The sensitivity to such modes has been significantly enhanced by the installation of a silicon based vertex detector as part of the DO detector upgrade for Run II. Interesting events must be identified initially in 100-200 microseconds to be available for later study. This paper describes custom electronics used in the DO trigger system to provide the real--time identification of events having tracks consistent with the decay of b--flavored particles.

J/Psi Polarization in 800-GeV p-Cu Interactions

We present measurements of the polarization of the $ J/ψ$ produced in 800-GeV proton interactions with a copper target. Polarization of the $ J/ψ$ is sensitive to the $ c \bar{c} $ production and hadronization processes. A longitudinal polarization is observed at large $ x_{F} $, while at small $ x_{F} $ the state is produced essentially unpolarized or slightly transversely polarized. No significant variation of the polarization is observed versus $ p_{T} $.

Absolute Drell-Yan Dimuon Cross Sections in 800 GeV/c pp and pd Collisions

The Fermilab E866/NuSea Collaboration has measured the Drell-Yan dimuon cross sections in 800 GeV/$c$ $pp$ and $pd$ collisions. This represents the first measurement of the Drell-Yan cross section in $pp$ collisions over a broad kinematic region and the most extensive study to date of the Drell-Yan cross section in $pd$ collisions. The results indicate that recent global parton distribution fits provide a good description of the light antiquark sea in the nucleon over the Bjorken-$x$ range $0.03 \lesssim x < 0.15$, but overestimate the valence quark distributions as $x \to 1$.

Observation of Polarization in Bottomonium Production at sqrt(s)=38.8 GeV

We present a measurement of the polarization observed for bottomonium states produced in p-Cu collisions at sqrt(s)=38.8 GeV. The angular distribution of the decay dimuons of the Upsilon(1S) state show no polarization at small xF and pT but significant positive transverse production polarization for either pT > 1.8 GeV/c or for xF > 0.35. The Upsilon(2S+3S) unresolved states show a large transverse production polarization at all values of xF and pT measured. These observations are compared with an NRQCD calculation that predicts a transverse polarization in bottomonium production arising from quark-antiquark fusion and gluon-gluon fusion diagrams.

Measurement of Differences Between J/Psi and Psi' Suppression in p-A Collisions

Measurements of the suppression of the yield per nucleon of J/Psi and Psi' production for 800 GeV/c protons incident on heavy relative to light nuclear targets have been made with very broad coverage in xF and pT. The observed suppression is smallest at xF values of 0.25 and below and increases at larger values of xF. It is also strongest at small pT. Substantial differences between the Psi' and J/Psi are observed for the first time in p-A collisions. The suppression for the Psi' is stronger than that for the J/Psi for xF near zero, but becomes comparable to that for the J/Psi for xF > 0.6.

Parton energy loss limits and shadowing in Drell-Yan dimuon production

A precise measurement of the ratios of the Drell-Yan cross section per nucleon for an 800 GeV/c proton beam incident on Be, Fe and W targets is reported. The behavior of the Drell-Yan ratios at small target parton momentum fraction is well described by an existing fit to the shadowing observed in deep-inelastic scattering. The cross section ratios as a function of the incident parton momentum fraction set tight limits on the energy loss of quarks passing through a cold nucleus.

dbar/ubar Asymmetry and the Origin of the Nucleon Sea

The Drell-Yan cross section ratios, $σ(p+d)/σ(p+p)$, measured in Fermilab E866, have led to the first determination of $\bar d(x) / \bar u(x)$, $\bar d(x) - \bar u(x)$, and the integral of $\bar d(x) - \bar u(x)$ for the proton over the range $0.02 \le x \le 0.345$. The E866 results are compared with predictions based on parton distribution functions and various theoretical models. The relationship between the E866 results and the NMC measurement of the Gottfried integral is discussed. The agreement between the E866 results and models employing virtual mesons indicates these non-perturbative processes play an important role in the origin of the $\bar d$, $\bar u$ asymmetry in the nucleon sea.

Measurement of the Light Antiquark Flavor Asymmetry in the Nucleon Sea

A precise measurement of the ratio of Drell-Yan yields from an 800 GeV/c proton beam incident on hydrogen and deuterium targets is reported. Over 140,000 Drell-Yan muon pairs with dimuon mass M_{mu+ mu-} >= 4.5 GeV/c^2 were recorded. From these data, the ratio of anti-down (dbar) to anti-up (ubar) quark distributions in the proton sea is determined over a wide range in Bjorken-x. A strong x dependence is observed in the ratio dbar/ubar, showing substantial enhancement of dbar with respect to ubar for x<0.2. This result is in fair agreement with recent parton distribution parameterizations of the sea. For x>0.2, the observed dbar/ubar ratio is much nearer unity than given by the parameterizations.
