Electronic structure of transition metal impurities in p-type ZnO

The self-interaction corrected local spin-density approximation is used to investigate the ground-state valency configuration of transition metal (TM=Mn, Co) impurities in p-type ZnO. Based on the total energy considerations, we find a stable localised TM$^{2+}$ configuration for a TM impurity in ZnO if no additional hole donors are present. Our calculations indicate that the (+/0) donor level is situated in the band gap, as a consequence of which the TM$^{3+}$ becomes more favourable in p-type ZnO, where the Fermi level is positioned at the top of the valence band. When co-doping with N, it emerges that the carrier-mediated ferromagnetism can be realized in the scenario where the N concentration exceeds the TM impurity concentration. If TM and N concentrations are equal, the shallow acceptor levels introduced by N are fully compensated by delocalised TM d-electrons.

Self-interaction corrected relativistic theory of magnetic scattering of x rays: Application to praseodymium

A first-principles theory of resonant magnetic scattering of x rays is presented. The scattering amplitudes are calculated using a standard time-dependent perturbation theory to second order in the electron-photon interaction vertex. In order to calculate the cross section reliably an accurate description of the electronic states in the material under investigation is required and this is provided by the density functional theory (DFT) employing the Local Spin Density Approximation combined with the self-interaction corrections (SIC-LSD). The magnetic x-ray resonant scattering (MXRS) theory has been implemented in the framework of the relativistic spin-polarized LMTO-ASA band structure calculation method. The theory is illustrated with an application to ferromagnetic praseodymium. It is shown that the theory quantitatively reproduces the dependence on the spin and orbital magnetic moments originally predicted qualitatively (Blume, J. Appl. Phys, {\bf 57}, 3615 (1985)) and yields results that can be compared directly with experiment.

Electronic and magnetic properties of the (001) surface of hole-doped manganites

The electronic and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic doped manganites are investigated by means of model tight-binding and \textit{ab initio} self-interaction corrected local spin density approximation calculations. It is found that the surface alone by breaking the cubic symmetry induces a difference in the occupation of the two $e_{g}$ orbitals at the surface. With \textit{ab initio} calculations we found surface localisation of one orbital and hence a change in the Mn valency from four in the bulk to three at the sub-surface. Different surface or disordered interface induced localisation of the orbitals are considered too with respect to the nature and the strength of the magnetic exchange coupling between the surface/interface and the bulk-like region.

Electronic Structure of Samarium Monopnictides and Monochalcogenides

The electronic structures of SmX (X=N, P, As, Sb, Bi, O, S, Se, Te, Po)compounds are calculated using the self-interaction corrected local-spin density approximation. The Sm ion is described with either five or six localized $f$-electrons while the remaining electrons form bands, and the total energies of these scenarios are compared. With five localized $f$-electrons a narrow $f$-band is formed in the vicinity of the Fermi level leading to an effective intermediate valence. This scenario is the ground state of all the pnictides as well as SmO. With six localized $f$-electrons, the chalcogenides are semiconductors, which is the ground state of SmS, SmSe and SmTe. Under compression the Sm chalcogenides undergo first order transitions with destabilization of the $f$ states into the intermediate valence state, the bonding properties of which are well reproduced by the present theory.

Pressure Induced Charge Disproportionation in LaMnO$_{3}$

We present a total energy study as a function of volume in the cubic phase of LaMnO$_{3}$. A charge disproportionated state into planes of Mn$^{3+}$O$_{2}$/Mn$^{4+}$O$_{2}$ was found. It is argued that the pressure driven localisation/delocalisation transition might go smoothly through a region of Mn$^{3+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ coexistence.

The Electronic Structure of Europium Chalcogenides and Pnictides

The electronic structure of some europium chalcogenides and pnictides is calculated using the {\it ab-initio} self-interaction corrected local-spin-density approximation (SIC-LSD). This approach allows both a localised description of the rare earth $f-$electrons and an itinerant description of $s$, $p$ and $d$-electrons. Localising different numbers of $f$-electrons on the rare earth atom corresponds to different nominal valencies, and the total energies can be compared, providing a first-principles description of valency. All the chalcogenides are found to be insulators in the ferromagnetic state and to have a divalent configuration. For the pnictides we find that EuN is half-metallic and the rest are normal metals. However a valence change occurs as we go down the pnictide column of the Periodic Table. EuN and EuP are trivalent, EuAs is only just trivalent and EuSb is found to be divalent. Our results suggest that these materials may find application in spintronic and spin filtering devices.

Ab initio study of charge order in Fe3O4

We present a self-interaction corrected local spin density (SIC-LSD) study of the electronic structure and possible charge order of magnetite, Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$. The issue of charge order in magnetite is explored in both cubic and orthorhombic structures, the latter being an approximation to the true, low temperature, monoclinic structure. We find that the Verwey charge ordered phase is not the groundstate solution for this compound neither in cubic nor orthorhombic structure.

Self-interaction Corrected Calculations of Correlated f-electron Systems

The electronic structures of several actinide solid systems are calculated using the self-interaction corrected local spin density approximation. Within this scheme the $5f$ electron manifold is considered to consist of both localized and delocalized states, and by varying their relative proportions the energetically most favourable (groundstate) configuration can be established. Specifically, we discuss elemental Pu in its $δ$-phase, PuO$_2$ and the effects of addition of oxygen, the series of actinide monopnictides and monochalcogenides, and the UX$_3$, X= Rh, Pd, Pt, Au, intermetallic series.

The Spintronic Properties of Rare Earth Nitrides

The electronic structure of the rare earth nitrides is studied systematically using the {\it ab-initio} self-interaction corrected local-spin-density approximation (SIC-LSD). This approach allows both a localised description of the rare earth $f-$electrons and an itinerant description of the valence electrons. Localising different numbers of $f$-electrons on the rare earth atom corresponds to different valencies, and the total energies can be compared, providing a first-principles description of valence. CeN is found to be tetravalent while the remaining rare earth nitrides are found to be trivalent. We show that these materials have a broad range of electronic properties including forming a new class of half-metallic magnets with high magnetic moments and are strong candidates for applications in spintronic and spin-filtering devices.

Half-Metallicity of LSMO

Self-interaction corrected local spin density approximation calculations were performed for La$_{(1-x)}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) ($0.0<x<0.5$). The influence and inter-relationship of Sr doping, magnetic structure, O displacements and phase segregation on the Mn charge state were studied. A half-metallic state was obtained for LSMO with manganese configuration Mn$^{3+}$, whilst Mn$^{4+}$ gave rise to a metallic state with a negligible spin polarisation at the Fermi level. Elongating the MnO$_6$ octahedron led to a static mixed valence Mn$^{3+}$/Mn$^{4+}$ configuration. In the mixed valence state the total energy was minimized by an ordered array of Mn$^{4+}$ and Mn$^{3+}$ MnO$_2$ planes which showed charge ordered stripes.

Ab initio charge, spin and orbital energy scales in LaMnO3

The first-principles SIC-LSD theory is utilized to study electronic, magnetic and orbital phenomena in LaMnO$_{3}$. The correct ground state is found, which is antiferro orbitally ordered with the spin magnetic moments antiferromagnetically aligned. Jahn-Teller energies are found to be the largest energy scale. In addition it is the Jahn-Teller interaction which is the dominant effect in realising orbital order, and the electronic effects alone do not suffice.

Prediction of a new class of half-metallic antiferromagnets

We report on vacancy induced half-metallicity in the prototype Mott-insulating substances MnO and NiO. By embedding a cation-vacancy into a magnetic system a new road opens up to the construction of half-metallic antiferromagnets. For Ni$_{0.97}$O we find a half-metallic antiferromagnet a system hitherto only proposed for complicated crystal structures.

Electronic structure of half-metallic double perovskites

We present the self-interaction corrected local spin density (SIC-LSD) electronic structure and total energy calculations, leading also to valencies of the ground state configurations, for the half-metallic double perovskites such as Sr$_{2}$FeMoO$_{6}$, Ba$_{2}$FeMoO$_{6}$, Ca$_{2}$FeMoO$_{6}$, and Ca$_{2}$FeReO$_{6}$. We conclude that the Fe and Mo (or Re) spin magnetic moments are anti-parallel aligned, and the magnitude of the hybridization induced moment on Mo does not vary much between the different compounds. The hybridization spin magnetic moment on Re is of the order of -1.1 $μ_{B}$, while that on Mo is about -0.4 $μ_{B}$, independently of the alkaline earth element. Also the electronic structure of all the compounds studied is very similar, with a well defined gap in the majority spin component and metallic density of states for the minority spin component, with highly hybridized Fe, Mo (or Re), and oxygen bands.

Ab-initio determination of the localized/delocalized f-manifold in UPd_2Al_3

The electronic structure of UPd_2Al_3 is described using the self-interaction corrected local-spin-density approximation to density functional theory. The groundstate is found to be characterized by the coexistence of localized (f^2) and delocalized U f electrons, in agreement with experimental evidence. We observe significant difference in electronic structure between UPd_2Al_3 and the previously studied UPt_3 compound. Even though a trend towards localization exists in UPt_3, the total energies and the density of states at the Fermi level favor a groundstate with localized f^1, rather than f^2 U ions.

Systematic theoretical study of the spin and orbital magnetic moments of 4d and 5d interfaces with Fe films

Results of ab initio calculations using the relativistic Local Spin Density theory are presented for the magnetic moments of periodic 5d and 4d transition metal interfaces with bcc Fe(001). In this systematic study we calculated the layer-resolved spin and orbital magnetic moments over the entire series. For the Fe/W(001) system, the Fe spin moment is reduced whilst its orbital moment is strongly enhanced. In the W layers a spin moment is induced, which is antiparallel to that of Fe in the first and fourth W layers but parallel to Fe in the second and third W layers. The W orbital moment does not follow the spin moment. It is aligned antiparallel to Fe in the first two W layers and changes sign in the third and fourth W layers. Therefore, Hund's third rule is violated in the first and third W layers, but not in the second and fourth W layers. The trend in the spin and orbital moments over the 4d and 5d series for multilayers is quite similar to previous impurity calculations. These observations strongly suggest that these effects can be seen as a consequence of the hybridization between 5d (4d) and Fe which is mostly due to band filling, and to a lesser extent geometrical effects of either single impurity or interface.
