Ultra-sensitive magnetometry based on free precession of nuclear spins

We discuss the design and performance of a very sensitive low-field magnetometer based on the detection of free spin precession of gaseous, nuclear polarized 3He or 129Xe samples with a SQUID as magnetic flux detector. The device will be employed to control fluctuating magnetic fields and gradients in a new experiment searching for a permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron as well as in a new type of 3He/129Xe clock comparison experiment which should be sensitive to a sidereal variation of the relative spin precession frequency. Characteristic spin precession times T_2 of up to 60h could be measured. In combination with a signal-to-noise ratio of > 5000:1, this leads to a sensitivity level of deltaB= 1fT after an integration time of 220s and to deltaB= 10^(-4)fT after one day. Even in that sensitivity range, the magnetometer performance is statistically limited, and noise sources inherent to the magnetometer are not limiting. The reason is that free precessing 3He (129Xe) nuclear spins are almost completely decoupled from the environment. That makes this type of magnetometer in particular attractive for precision field measurements where a long-term stability is required.

A Test Facility for the International Linear Collider at SLAC End Station A, for Prototypes of Beam Delivery and IR Components

The SLAC Linac can deliver damped bunches with ILC parameters for bunch charge and bunch length to End Station A. A 10Hz beam at 28.5 GeV energy can be delivered there, parasitic with PEP-II operation. We plan to use this facility to test prototype components of the Beam Delivery System and Interaction Region. We discuss our plans for this ILC Test Facility and preparations for carrying out experiments related to collimator wakefields and energy spectrometers. We also plan an interaction region mockup to investigate effects from backgrounds and beam-induced electromagnetic interference.

Temperature-dependent quasiparticle band structure of the ferromagnetic semiconductor EuS

We present calculations for the temperature-dependent electronic structure of the ferromagnetic semiconductor EuS. A combination of a many-body evaluation of a multiband Kondo-lattice model and a first-principles T=0--bandstructure calculation (tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital (TB-LMTO)) is used to get realistic information about temperature- and correlation effects in the EuS energy spectrum. The combined method strictly avoids double-counting of any relevant interaction. Results for EuS are presented in terms of spectral densities, quasiparticle band structures and quasiparticle densities of states, and that over the entire temperature range.

Kondo-lattice model: Application to the temperature-dependent electronic structure of EuO(100) films

We present calculations for the temperature-dependent electronic structure and magnetic properties of thin ferromagnetic EuO films. The treatment is based on a combination of a multiband-Kondo lattice model with first-principles TB-LMTO band structure calculations. The method avoids the problem of double-counting of relevant interactions and takes into account the correct symmetry of the atomic orbitals. We discuss the temperature-dependent electronic structures of EuO(100) films in terms of quasiparticle densities of states and quasiparticle band structures. The Curie temperature T_C of the EuO films turns out to be strongly thickness-dependent, starting from a very low value = 15K for the monolayer and reaching the bulk value at about 25 layers.

The temperature dependent behaviour of surface states in ferromagnetic semiconductors

We present a model calculation for the temperature dependent behaviour of surface states on a ferromagnetic local-moment film. The film is described within the s-f model featuring local magnetic moments being exchange coupled to the itinerant conduction electrons. The surface states are generated by modifying the hopping in the vicinity of the surface of the film. In the calculation for the temperature dependent behaviour of the surface states we are able to reproduce both Stoner-like and spin-mixing behaviour in agreement with recent (inverse) photoemission data on the temperature dependent behaviour of a Gd(0001) surface state.

On the origin of surface states in a correlated local-moment film

The electronic quasiparticle structure of a ferromagnetic local moment film is investigated within the framework of the s-f model. For the special case of a single electron in an otherwise empty energy band being exchange coupled to a fully ordered localised spin system the problem can be solved exactly and, for the spin-down electron, some marked correlation effects can be found. We extend our model to incorporate the influence of the surface on the electronic structure. Therefore we modify the hopping integrals in the vicinity of the surface. This leads to the existence of surface states, both for the spin-up and the spin-down spectral density of states. The interplay between the modification of the hopping integrals and the existence of surface states and correlation effects is discussed in detail.
