State space collapse and diffusion approximation for a network operating under a fair bandwidth sharing policy

We consider a connection-level model of Internet congestion control, introduced by Massoulié and Roberts [Telecommunication Systems 15 (2000) 185--201], that represents the randomly varying number of flows present in a network. Here, bandwidth is shared fairly among elastic document transfers according to a weighted $α$-fair bandwidth sharing policy introduced by Mo and Walrand [IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking 8 (2000) 556--567] [$α\in (0,\infty)$]. Assuming Poisson arrivals and exponentially distributed document sizes, we focus on the heavy traffic regime in which the average load placed on each resource is approximately equal to its capacity. A fluid model (or functional law of large numbers approximation) for this stochastic model was derived and analyzed in a prior work [Ann. Appl. Probab. 14 (2004) 1055--1083] by two of the authors. Here, we use the long-time behavior of the solutions of the fluid model established in that paper to derive a property called multiplicative state space collapse, which, loosely speaking, shows that in diffusion scale, the flow count process for the stochastic model can be approximately recovered as a continuous lifting of the workload process.

MgB2 coated superconducting tapes with high critical current densities fabricated by hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition

The MgB2 coated superconducting tapes have been fabricated on textured Cu (0 0 1) and polycrystalline Hastelloy tapes using coated conductor technique, which has been developed for the second generation high temperature superconducting wires. The MgB2/Cu tapes were fabricated over a wide temperature range of 460-520 °C by using hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD) technique. The tapes exhibited the critical temperatures (Tc) ranging between 36 and 38 K with superconducting transition width (\DeltaTc) of about 0.3-0.6 K. The highest critical current density (Jc) of 1.34 \times 105 A/cm2 at 5 K under 3 T is obtained for the MgB2/Cu tape grown at 460^{\circ}C. To further improve the flux pinning property of MgB2 tapes, SiC is coated as an impurity layer on the Cu tape. In contrast to pure MgB2/Cu tapes, the MgB2 on SiC-coated Cu tapes exhibited opposite trend in the dependence of Jc with growth temperature. The improved flux pinning by the additional defects created by SiC-impurity layer along with the MgB2 grain boundaries lead to strong improvement in Jc for the MgB2/SiC/Cu tapes. The MgB2/Hastelloy superconducting tapes fabricated at a temperature of 520 °C showed the critical temperatures ranging between 38.5 and 39.6 K. We obtained much higher Jc values over the wide field range for MgB2/Hastelloy tapes than the previously reported data on other metallic substrates, such as Cu, SS, and Nb. The Jc values of Jc(20 K, 0 T) \sim5.8 \times 106 A/cm2 and Jc(20 K, 1.5 T) ~2.4 \times 105 A/cm2 is obtained for the 2-\mum-thick MgB2/Hastelloy tape. This paper will review the merits of coated conductor approach along with the HPCVD technique to fabricate MgB2 conductors with high Tc and Jc values which are useful for large scale applications.

Influence of Mg Deficiency on the Superconductivity in MgB2 Thin Films Grown by using HPCVD

The effects of Mg deficiency in MgB2 films grown by using hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition were investigated after vacuum annealing at various temperatures. High-quality MgB2 films grown on c-cut Al2O3 substrates with different superconducting transition temperatures (Tc) of 40.2 and 41 K were used in this study. As the annealing temperature was increased from 200 to 800 C, the Mg contents in the MgB2 films systemically decreased, but the Tc's did not change, within 0.12 K, until the annealing temperature reached 700 C. For MgB2 films annealed at 800 C for 30 min, however, no superconductivity was observed, and the temperature dependence of the resistivity showed a semiconducting behavior. We also found that the residual resistivity ratio decreased with increasing annealing temperature.

Transient Infrared Photoreflectance Study of Superconducting MgB2: Evidence for Multiple Gaps and Interband Scattering

We studied the far-infrared reflectance of superconducting MgB2 in and out of equilibrium using pulsed synchrotron radiation. The equilibrium data can be described by a single energy gap at 2 Delta / hc = 43 cm-1. The fit improves slightly at lower frequencies when two gaps (at 30 cm-1 and 56 cm-1$) are assumed to exist. The non equilibrium data is obtained when excess quasiparticles are generated in the MgB2 film by a laser pulse, decreasing the energy gap(s). The temperature dependence of the number of excess quasiparticles indicates that only a single gap near 30 cm-1 controls the non-equilibrium process. Fits to the photo-induced reflectance show the presence of the two gaps but weakening of an energy gap at 30 cm-1 only. Our data can be understood if one considers the picture where excited quasiparticles created by the laser impulse relax to the lowest gap band before recombining into Cooper pairs.

Interband scattering in MgB2

The scattering process responsible for connecting the bands remains one of the last open questions on the physical properties of MgB2. Through the analysis of the equilibrium and photo-induced far-infrared properties as well as electron spin resonance of MgB2 we propose a phonon mediated energy transfer process between the bands based on the coupling of quasiparticles to an E2g phonon.

Correlation of microwave surface impedance of MgB_2 thin film with material parameters and a temperature niche for microwave applications

Two issues related to the microwave surface impedance Z_s of MgB_2 thin film are discussed in this Letter, both being significant for potential microwave applications. At first, a correlation between Zs and Alpha = Xi/l was found, where Xi is the coherence length, and l is the mean free path. The surface resistance Rs decreases with Alpha at moderate and large values of Alpha and saturates when Alpha approaches one. The values of the penetration depth at zero temperature Lamda(0) for different films could be well fitted by Lamda_L (1+Alpha)^(1/2), yielding a London penetration depth Lamda_L of 33.6 nm. The second issue is to find a temperature niche for possible microwave applications. Between 10K and 15K, our best MgB_2 films possess the lowest Rs values compared with other superconductors such as NbN, Nb3Sn and the high-temperature superconductor YBCO.

Critical flux pinning and enhanced upper-critical-field in magnesium diboride films

We have conducted pulsed transport measurements on c-axis oriented magnesium diboride films over the entire relevant ranges of magnetic field $0 \alt H \alt H_{c2}$ (where \hcu is the upper critical field) and current density $0 \alt j \alt j_{d}$ (where $j_{d}$ is the depairing current density). The intrinsic disorder of the films combined with the large coherence length and three-dimensionality, compared to cuprate superconductors, results in a six-fold enhancement of $H_{c2}$ and raises the depinning current density $j_{c}$ to within an order of magnitude of $j_{d}$. The current-voltage response is highly non-linear at all fields, resulting from a combination of depinning and pair-breaking, and has no trace of an Ohmic free-flux-flow regime. Pair-breaking and superconducting state recovery dynamics in MgB2

We present studies of the photoexcited quasiparticle dynamics in MgB2 where, using femtosecond optical techniques, Cooper pair breaking dynamics (PBD) have been temporally resolved for the first time. The PBD are strongly temperature and photoexcitation intensity dependent. Analysis of the PBD using the Rothwarf-Taylor equations suggests that the anomalous PBD arises from the fact that in MgB2 photoexcitation is initially followed by energy relaxation to high frequency phonons instead of, as commonly assumed, e-e thermalization. Furthermore, the bare quasiparticle recombination rate and the probability for pair-breaking by phonons have been determined.

Anomalous microwave conductivity coherence peak in c-axis MgB2 thin film

The temperature dependence of the real part of the microwave complex conductivity at 17.9 GHz obtained from surface impedance measurements of two c-axis oriented MgB2 thin films reveals a pronounced maximum at a temperature around 0.6 times the critical temperature. Calculations in the frame of a two-band model based on Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory suggest that this maximum corresponds to an anomalous coherence peak resembling the two-gap nature of MgB2. Our model assumes there is no interband impurity scattering and a weak interband pairing interaction, as suggested by bandstructure calculations. In addition, the observation of a coherence peak indicates that the pi-band is in the dirty limit and dominates the total conductivity of our films

Mesoscopic flux jumps in MgB2 films visualized by magneto-optical imaging

We report on the first spatially resolved observation of mesoscopic flux jumps in superconducting films. Magneto-optical imaging was used to visualize the flux penetration in MgB2 films subjected to a slowly varying perpendicular field. Below 10 K, flux jumps with typical size 10-20 microns and regular shape are found to occur at random locations along the flux front. The total number of vortices participating in one jump is varying between 50 and 10000. Simultaneously, big dendritic jumps with dimensions comparable to the sample size (10^6-10^8 vortices) are also found in this temperature range. We believe that both types of jumps result from thermo-magnetic instability.

Flux Noise in MgB2 Thin Films

We have performed flux noise and AC-susceptibility measurements on two 400 nm thick MgB$_2$ films. Both measurement techniques give information about the vortex dynamics in the sample, and hence the superconducting transition, and can be linked to each other through the fluctuation-dissipation-theorem. The transition widths for the two films are 0.3 and 0.8 K, respectively, and the transitions show a multi step-like behavior in the AC-susceptibility measurements. The same phenomenon is observed in the flux noise measurements through a change in the frequency dependence of the spectral density at each step in the transition. The results are discussed and interpreted in terms of vortices carrying an arbitrary fraction of a flux quantum as well as in terms of different macroscopic regions in the films having slightly different compositions, and hence, different critical temperatures.

An angle-resolved soft x-ray spectroscopy study of the electronic states of single crystal MgB2

Angle-resolved soft x-ray measurements made at the boron K-edge in single crystal MgB2 provide new insights into the B-2p local partial density of both unoccupied and occupied band states. The strong variation of absorption with incident angle of exciting x-rays permits the clear separation of contributions from σstates in the boron plane and πstates normal to the plane. A careful comparison with theory accurately determines the energy of selected critical $k$ points in the conduction band. Resonant inelastic x-ray emission at an incident angle of 15 degrees shows a large enhancement of the emission spectra within about 0.5 eV of the Fermi level that is absent at 45 degrees and is much reduced at 60 degrees. We conclude that momentum transferred from the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) process couples empty and filled states across the Fermi level.

Study of the electron-phonon interaction in metal diborides MeB_2 (Me=Zr, Nb, Ta, Mg) by point-contact spectroscopy

We review investigations of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in metal diborides MeB_2 (Me=Zr, Nb, Ta, Mg) by point-contact (PC) spectroscopy. For transition metal compounds the PC EPI functions were recovered and EPI parameter $λ\lesssim 0.1$ were estimated. The data are consistent with the measured surface phonon dispersion curves. The low $λ$ value questions some reports about superconductivity in these compounds. Contrary, EPI in superconducting MgB_2 films manifests also in the PC spectra itself by virtue of an elastic EPI contribution to the excess current determined by the energy dependence of the superconducting order parameter. To analyse the phonon features in the PC spectra of MgB$_2$ a two-band model is exploited and the proximity effect in the {\bf k}-space is suggested.

Interplay of dendritic avalanches and gradual flux penetration in superconducting MgB2 films

Magneto-optical imaging was used to study a zero-field-cooled MgB2 film at 9.6K where in a slowly increasing field the flux penetrates by abrupt formation of large dendritic structures. Simultaneously, a gradual flux penetration takes place, eventually covering the dendrites, and a detailed analysis of this process is reported. We find an anomalously high gradient of the flux density across a dendrite branch, and a peak value that decreases as the applied field goes up. This unexpected behaviour is reproduced by flux creep simulations based on the non-local field-current relation in the perpendicular geometry. The simulations also provide indirect evidence that flux dendrites are formed at an elevated local temperature, consistent with a thermo-magnetic mechanism of the instability

The pair-breaking critical current density of magnesium diboride

The pair-breaking critical current density j_{d} of magnesium diboride was determined over its entire temperature range by a pulsed dc transport measurement. At fixed low values of current density j, the resistive transition temperature Tc shifts in the classic ΔT_{C}(j)/T_{C}(0) \propto -[j/j_{d}(0)]^{2/3} manner, with a projected j_{d}(0) \approx 2 \times 10^{7}$ A/cm^{2}. The directly measured j_{d}(0), from current-voltage ($I$-$V$)curves at different fixed temperatures, has a similar value and the overall temperature dependence j_{d}(T) and magnitude are consistent with Ginzburg-Landau theory. Growth of superconducting MgB2 thin films via postannealing techniques

We report the effect of annealing on the superconductivity of MgB2 thin films as functions of the postannealing temperature in the range from 700 C to 950 C and of the postannealing time in the range from 30 min to 120 min. On annealing at 900 C for 30 min, we obtained the best-quality MgB2 films with a transition temperature of 39 K and a critical current density of ~ 10^7 A/cm^2. Using the scanning electron microscopy, we also investigated the film growth mechanism. The samples annealed at higher temperatures showed the larger grain sizes, well-aligned crystal structures with preferential orientations along the c-axis, and smooth surface morphologies. However, a longer annealing time prevented the alignment of grains and reduced the superconductivity, indicating a strong interfacial reaction between the substrate and the MgB2 film.

Phonon structure in I-V characteristic of MgB$_{2}$ point-contacts

The search of the phonon structure at the above-gap energies was carried out for $d^{2}V/dI^{2}(V)$ spectra of MgB$_{2}$ point contacts with a normal metal. The two-band model is assumed not only for the gap structure in $dV/dI(V)$-characteristics, but also for phonons in $d^{2}V/dI^{2}(V)$ point-contact spectra, with up to the maximum lattice vibration energy. Since the current is carried mostly by charges of 3D-band, whereas the strong electron-phonon interaction occurs in 2D-band, we observe the phonon peculiarities due to ''proximity'' effect in {\it k}-space, which depends on the variation of interband coupling through the elastic scattering.

Coherence lengths and anisotropy in MgB2 superconductor

Field and temperature microwave measurements have been carried out on MgB2 thin film grown on Al2O3 substrate. The analysis reveals the mean field coherence length xi_{MF} in the mixed state and a temperature independent anisotropy ratio gamma_{MF} = xi_{MF}^{ab} / xi_{MF}^c approximately 2. At the superconducting transition, the scaling of the fluctuation conductivity yields the Ginzburg-Landau coherence length with a different anisotropy ratio gamma_{GL} = 2.8, also temperature independent.
