The A-B Transition of Superfluid Helium-3 in Aerogel and the Effect of Anisotropic Scattering

We report the results of high frequency acoustic shear impedance measurement on superfluid helium-3 confined in 98% porosity silica aerogel. Using 8.69 MHz continuous wave excitation, we measured the acoustic shear impedance as a function of temperature for the sample pressure of 28.4 and 33.5 bar. We observed the A-B transition on warming in zero magnetic field. Our observations show that the A and B phases in aerogel coexist in a temperature range of about 100 micro-Kelvin in width. We propose that the difference in the relative stability of the A and B phases, arising from anisotropic scattering, can account for our observations.

Helium-Three in Aerogel

Liquid 3He confined in silica aerogel provides us with a unique system to study the effects of quenched disorder on the properties of a strongly correlated quantum liquid. The superfluid phases display interplay between disorder and complex symmetry-breaking.

Specific Heat of Disordered Superfluid $^{3}$He

The specific heat of superfluid $^{3}$He, disordered by a silica aerogel, is found to have a sharp discontinuity marking the thermodynamic transition to superfluidity at a temperature reduced from that of bulk $^{3}$He. The magnitude of the discontinuity is also suppressed. This disorder effect can be understood from the Ginzburg-Landau theory which takes into account elastic quasiparticle scattering suppressing both the transition temperature and the amplitude of the order parameter. We infer that the limiting temperature dependence of the specific heat is linear at low temperatures in the disordered superfluid state, consistent with predictions of gapless excitations everywhere on the Fermi surface.

Antiferromagnetism in the Vortex Cores of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$

We report spatially resolved nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on a high temperature superconductor that indicate the presence of correlated antiferromagnetic fluctuations in the vortex core. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate, $1/^{17}T_1$, of planar $^{17}O$, in near-optimally doped YB$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO), was measured. Outside of the core, $(^{17}T_1T)^{-1}$ is independent of temperature consistent with theoretical predictions for a {\it d}-wave superconductor. In the vortex core $(^{17}T_1T)^{-1}$ increases with decreasing temperature following an antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss law.

Hole-Burning Diffusion Measurements in High Magnetic Field Gradients

We describe methods for the measurement of translational diffusion in very large static magnetic field gradients by NMR. The techniques use a "hole-burning" sequence that, with the use of fringe field gradients of 42 T/m, can image diffusion along one dimension on a submicron scale. Two varieties of this method are demonstrated, including a particularly efficient mode called the "hole-comb," in which multiple diffusion times comprising an entire diffusive evolution can be measured within the span of a single detected slice. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed, as well as their potential for addressing non-Fickian diffusion, diffusion in restricted media, and spatially inhomogeneous diffusion.

Phase Diagram of the Superfluid Phases of 3He in 98% Aerogel

The phase diagram of the superfluid phases of $^{3}$He in 98% aerogel was determined in the range of pressure from 15 to 33 bars and for fields up to 3 kG using high-frequency sound. The superfluid transition in aerogel at 33.4 bars is field independent from 0 to 5 kG and shows no evidence of an $A_{1}-A_{2}$ splitting. The first-order transition between the A and B-phases is suppressed by a magnetic field, and exhibits strong supercooling at high pressures. We show that the equilibrium phase in zero applied field is the B-phase with at most a region of A-phase {\small $\alt$} 20 $μ$K just below T${_c}$ at a pressure of 33.4 bars. This is in contrast to pure $^{3}$He which has a large stable region of A-phase and a polycritical point. The quadratic coefficient for magnetic field suppression of the AB-transition, $g_{a}(β)$, was obtained. The pressure dependence of $g_{a}(β)$ is markedly different from that for the pure superfluid, $g_{0}(β)$, which diverges at a polycritical pressure of 21 bars. We compare our results with calculations from the homogeneous scattering model for $g_{a}(β)$, defined in a Ginzburg-Landau theory in terms of strong-coupling parameters $β$. We find qualitatively good agreement with the experiment if the strong-coupling corrections are rescaled from known values of the $β$'s for pure $^{3}$He, reduced by the suppression of the superfluid transition temperature. The calculations indicate that the polycritical pressure in the aerogel system is displaced well above the melting pressure and out of experimental reach. We cannot account for the puzzling supercooling of the aerogel AB-transition in zero applied field within the framework of known nucleation scenarios.

Nucleation and Interfacial Coupling between Pure and Dirty Superfluid Phases of 3He

The nucleation of the first order phase transition of superfluid 3He-B from superfluid 3He-A is quite remarkable since it requires a seed of the order of a micron. We have studied this nucleation for 3He confined to a very dilute silica aerogel. This dirty superfluid behaves in a manner similar to previous reports for the pure superfluid. But we have discovered a novel magnetically driven nucleation switch acting on the pure superfluid B-phase. Lastly, we find the surprising result that the proximity effect between the pure and dirty superfluids at their interface is insufficient to nucleate the B-phase in either superfluid.

Spatially resolved electronic structure inside and outside the vortex core of a high temperature superconductor

One of the puzzling aspects of high temperature superconductors is the prevalence of magnetism in the normal state and the persistence of superconductivity in very high magnetic fields. Generally, superconductivity and magnetism are not compatible. But recent neutron scattering results indicate that antiferromagnetism can appear deep in the superconducting state in an applied magnetic field. Magnetic fields penetrate a superconductor in the form of quantized flux lines each one representing a vortex of supercurrents. Superconductivity is suppressed in the core of the vortex and it has been suggested that antiferromagnetism might develop there. To address this question it is important to perform electronic structural studies with spatial resolution. Here we report on implementation of a high field NMR imaging experiment that allows spatial resolution of the electronic behavior both inside and outside the vortex cores. Outside we find strong antiferromagnetic fluctuations, and localized inside there are electronic states rather different from those found in conventional superconductors.

The Pseudogap in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ from NMR in High Magnetic Fields

We report $^{17}$O(2,3) and $^{63}$Cu(2) spin-lattice relaxation rates and the $^{17}$O(2,3) spin-spin relaxation rate in different magnetic fields in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ near $T_c$. Together these measurements enable us to test the magnetic field dependence of the pseudogap effect on the spin susceptibility in different regions of the Brillouin zone using the known form factors for different nuclei as filters. Thus, we study the momentum dispersion of the pseudogap behavior. We find that near the antiferromagnetic wave vector the pseudogap is insensitive to magnetic fields up to 15 T. In the remaining region, away from the $(π,π)$ point, the pseudogap shows a magnetic field dependence at fields less then 10 T. The first result is indicative of the opening of a spin-pseudogap that suppresses antiferromagnetic correlations below a temperature $T^*$; whereas, the second result shows the effect of pairing fluctuations on the spin susceptibility as a precursory effect of superconductivity.

Magneto-acoustic rotation of transverse waves in 3He-B

In superfluid 3He-B the off-resonant coupling of the J=2-, M=+/- 1 order parameter collective modes to transverse current excitations stabilizes propagating transverse waves with low damping for frequencies above that of the J=2- modes. Right- (RCP) and left circularly polarized (LCP) transverse modes are degenerate in zero field; however, a magnetic field with H || q lifts this degeneracy giving rise to the acoustic analog of circular birefringence and an acoustic Faraday effect for linearly polarized transverse sound waves. We present theoretical results for the temperature, pressure and field dependence of the Faraday rotation angle, and compare the theory with recent measurements. The analysis provides a direct measurement of the Lande' g-factor for the J=2- modes, and new information on the magnitude of f-wave pairing correlations in 3He-B.

Discovery of the Acoustic Faraday Effect in Superfluid 3He-B

We report the discovery of the acoustic Faraday effect in superfluid 3He-B. The observation of this effect provides the first direct evidence for propagating transverse acoustic waves in liquid 3He, a mode first predicted by Landau in 1957. The Faraday rotation is large and observable because of spontaneously broken spin-orbit symmetry in 3He-B. We compare the experimental observations with a simulation of the transverse acoustic impedance that includes the field-induced circular birefringence of transverse waves.

Superconducting Fluctuation Effects on the Electron Spin Susceptibility in YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.95}

The electronic spin susceptibility of YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.95} has been measured with high precision up to 24 Tesla with 17O nuclear magnetic resonance. Its temperature dependence can be accounted for by superconducting fluctuations that result in a smooth crossover from the normal to the vortex liquid state. A magnetic field-temperature phase diagram for this crossover has been established having strong upward curvature.

Comment on "Magnetic Field Independence of the Spin Gap in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-d}" by K. Gorny et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 177 (1999)

In a recent Letter of Gorny et al. it was reported that the spin-lattice relaxation rate in YBCO_{7-d} is magnetic field independent. These authors point out that their results are inconsistent with prior reports of Borsa et al., Carretta et al., and Mitrovic et al., which concluded that there is a small but significant magnetic field dependence. In this comment we propose an explanation for this discrepancy.

Superconducting Fluctuation Effects on the Spin-Lattice Relaxation Rate in YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.95}

We report 63Cu(2) spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements of YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.95} in magnetic fields from 2.1 T to 27.3 T obtained from 17O(2,3) nuclear magnetic resonance spin-spin relaxation. For T < 120 K, the spin-lattice rate increases with increasing magnetic field. We identify this magnetic field dependence with the change in the low-energy spectral weight originating from d-wave pairing fluctuation corrections to the density of states.

Suppression of Superconductivity in UPt_3 Single Crystals

High quality single crystals of UPt_3 have been prepared by vertical float-zone refining in ultra-high vacuum. We find that the superconducting transition temperature can be varied systematically by annealing, revealing that the transition temperature intrinsic to UPt_3 is 563 +/- 5 mK. The suppression of the superconducting transition from defects is consistent with a modified Abrikosov-Gor'kov formula that includes anisotropic pairing, Fermi surface anisotropy, and anisotropic scattering by defects.
