Flavor analysis of nucleon electromagnetic form factors

We have performed an evaluation of the individual up- and down-flavor contributions to the nucleon electromagnetic form factors within a relativistic constituent-quark model. It is found that the theoretical parameter-free predictions agree surprisingly well with recent experimental data from a flavor decomposition of the proton and neutron electromagnetic form factors for momentum transfers up to $Q^2\sim\;$3.5 GeV$^2$. It means that in this regime three-quark valence degrees of freedom dominate and other contributions, such as explicit mesonic effects, can at most play a minor role.

Relativistic point-form approach to hadron properties

We present a review of the description of hadron properties along an invariant mass operator in the point form of Poincaré-invariant relativistic dynamics. The quark-quark interaction is furnished by a linear confinement, consistent with the QCD string tension, and a hyperfine interaction derived from Goldstone-boson exchange. The main advantage of the point-form approach is the possibility of calculating manifestly covariant observables, since the generators of Lorentz transformations remain interaction-free. We discuss the static properties of the mass-operator eigenstates, such as the invariant mass spectra of light- and heavy-flavor baryons, the characteristics of the eigenstates in terms of their spin, flavor, and spatial dependences as well as their classification into spin-flavor multiplets. Regarding dynamical observables we address the electroweak structures of the nucleon and hyperon ground states, including their electric radii, magnetic moments as well as axial charges, and in addition a recently derived microscopic description of the $πNN$ as well as $πNΔ$ interaction vertices. Except for hadronic resonance decays, which are not addressed here due to space limitations, all of these observables are obtained in good agreement with existing phenomenology. Relativistic (boost) effects are generally sizable. We conclude that low-energy hadrons can be well described by an effective theory with a finite number of degrees of freedom, as long as the symmetries of low-energy quantum chromodynamics (spontaneously broken chiral symmetry) as well as special relativity (Poincaré invariance) are properly taken into account. The latter requirement is particularly well and efficiently met in the point-form approach.

Axial charges of octet and decuplet baryons

We present a study of axial charges of baryon ground and resonant states with relativistic constituent quark models. In particular, the axial charges of octet and decuplet $N$, $Σ$, $Ξ$, $Δ$, $Σ^*$, and $Ξ^*$ baryons are considered. The theoretical predictions are compared to existing experimental data and results from other approaches, notably from lattice quantum chromodynamics and chiral perturbation theory. The relevance of axial charges with regard to $π$-dressing and spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking is discussed.

Treatment of confinement in the Faddeev approach to three-quark problems

A method is presented that allows to solve the Faddeev integral equations of the semirelativistic constituent quark model. In such a model the quark-quark interaction is modeled by a infinitely rising confining potential and the kinetic energy is taken in a relativistic form. We solve the integral equations in Coulomb-Sturmian basis. This basis facilitate an exact treatment of the confining potentials.

Axial charges of the nucleon and N* resonances

The axial charges of the nucleon and the well-established N* resonances are studied within a consistent framework. For the first time the axial charges of the N* resonances are produced for the relativistic constituent quark model. The axial charge of the nucleon is predicted close to experiment, and the ones of N*(1535) and N*(1650), the only cases where such a comparison is possible, agree well with results from quantum chromodynamics on the lattice that have recently become available. The relevance of the magnitudes of the N* axial charges for the low-energy behavior of quantum chromodynamics is discussed.

Relativistic Quark-Model Results for Baryon Ground and Resonant States

Latest results from a study of baryon ground and resonant states within relativistic constituent quark models are reported. After recalling some typical spectral properties, the description of ground states, especially with regard to the nucleon and hyperon electromagnetic structures, is addressed. In the following, recent covariant predictions for pion, eta, and kaon partial decay widths of light and strange baryon resonances below 2 GeV are summarized. These results exhibit a characteristic pattern that is distinct from nonrelativistic or relativized decay studies performed so far. Together with a detailed analysis of the spin, flavor, and spatial structures of the wave functions, it supports a new and extended classification scheme of baryon ground and resonant states into SU(3) flavor multiplets.

Structure of meson-baryon interaction vertices

We present a microscopic derivation of the form factors of strong-interaction piNN and piNDelta vertices within a relativistic constituent quark model. The results are compared with form factors from phenomenological meson-baryon models and recent lattice QCD calculations. We give an analytical representation of the vertex form factors suitable for applications in further studies of hadron reactions.

Quark-Model Identification of Baryon Ground and Resonant States

We present a new classification scheme of baryon ground states and resonances into SU(3) flavor multiplets. The scheme is worked out along a covariant formalism with relativistic constituent quark models and it relies on detailed investigations of the baryon spectra, the spin-flavor structure of the baryon eigenstates, the behaviour of their probability density distributions as well as covariant predictions for mesonic decay widths. The results are found to be quite independent of the specific types of relativistic constituent quark models employed. It turns out that a consistent classification requires to include also resonances that are presently reported from experiment with only two-star status.

Baryon resonances and strong decays

Constituent quark models provide a reasonable description of the baryon mass spectra. However, even in the light- and strange-flavor sectors several intriguing shortcomings remain. Especially with regard to strong decays of baryon resonances no consistent picture has so far emerged, and the existing experimental data cannot be explained in a satisfactory manner. Recently first covariant calculations with modern constituent quark models have become available for all pi, eta, and K decay modes of the low-lying light and strange baryons. They generally produced a remarkable underestimation of the experimental data for partial decay widths. We summarize the main results and discuss their impact on the classification of baryon resonances into flavor multiplets. These findings are of particular relevance for future efforts in the experimental investigation of baryon resonances.

Electromagnetic nucleon form factors in instant and point form

We present a study of the electromagnetic structure of the nucleons with constituent quark models in the framework of relativistic quantum mechanics. In particular, we address the construction of spectator-model currents in the instant and point forms. Corresponding results for the elastic nucleon electromagnetic form factors as well as charge radii and magnetic moments are presented. We also compare results obtained by different realistic nucleon wave functions stemming from alternative constituent quark models. Finally, we discuss the theoretical uncertainties that reside in the construction of spectator-model transition operators.

Covariant calculation of strange decays of baryon resonances

We present results for kaon decay widths of baryon resonances from a relativistic study with constituent quark models. The calculations are done in the point-form of Poincare-invariant quantum mechanics with a spectator-model decay operator. We obtain covariant predictions of the Goldstone-boson-exchange and a variant of the one-gluon-exchange constituent quark models for all kaon decay widths of established baryon resonances. They are generally characterized by underestimating the available experimental data. In particular, the widths of kaon decays with increasing strangeness in the baryon turn out to be extremely small. We also consider the nonrelativistic limit, leading to the familiar elementary emission model, and demonstrate the importance of relativistic effects. It is found that the nonrelativistic approach evidently misses sensible influences from Lorentz boosts and some essential spin-coupling terms.

Covariant calculation of nonstrange decays of strange baryon resonances

We report on a study of pi and eta decays of strange baryon resonances within relativistic constituent-quark models based on one-gluon-exchange and Goldstone-boson-exchange dynamics. The investigations are performed in the point form of Poincare-invariant relativistic quantum mechanics with a spectator-model decay operator. The covariant predictions of the constituent-quark models underestimate the experimental data in most cases. These findings are congruent with an earlier study of nonstrange baryon decays in the light-flavor sector. We also consider a nonrelativistic reduction of the point-form spectator model, which leads to the decay operator of the elementary emission model. For some decays the nonrelativistic results differ substantially from the relativistic ones and they exhibit no uniform behavior as they scatter above and below the experimental decay widths.

Relativistic Calculation of Hadronic Baryon Decays

The description of baryon resonance decays represents a major challenge of strong interaction physics. We will report on a relativistic approach to mesonic decays of light and strange baryon resonances within constituent quark models. The calculations are performed in the point-form of relativistic quantum mechanics, specifically focussing on the strange sector. It is found that the relativistic predictions generally underestimate the experimental data. The nonrelativistic approximation of the approach leads to the decay operator of the elementary emission model. It is seen that the nonrelativistic reduction has considerable effects on the decay widths.

Hadronic Decays and Baryon Structure

Relativistic constituent quark models generally describe three-quark systems with particular interactions. The corresponding invariant mass eigenvalue spectra and pertinent eigenstates should exhibit the multiplet structure anticipated for baryon resonances. Taking into account the flavour content, spin structure, and spatial distribution of the baryon wave functions together with mass relations of the eigenvalues and decay properties of the eigenstates, we can link the theoretical mass eigenstates with the experimentally measured resonances. The resulting classification of baryon resonances differs in some respects from the one suggested by the Particle Data Group. With regard to the hadronic decay widths of light and strange baryon resonances a consistent picture emerges only, if the classification includes two-star resonances.

Poincare-invariant spectator-model currents for electroweak nucleon form factors

The relativistic constituent quark model of low-energy quantum chromodynamics is found to yield a consistent picture of the electroweak structure of the nucleons. Notably, the electromagnetic and axial form factors of both the proton and the neutron can be described in close agreement with existing experimental data in the domain of low to moderate momentum transfers. For the theory it is mandatory to respect Poincare invariance and to fulfill additional conditions like charge normalization. Here we present covariant predictions of the one-gluon-exchange and Goldstone-boson-exchange constituent quark models for the electroweak form factors of the nucleons and give a critical discussion of the results in view of the point-form spectator model employed for the electromagnetic and axial current operators.

Spectator-model operators in point-form relativistic quantum mechanics

We address the construction of transition operators for electromagnetic, weak, and hadronic reactions of relativistic few-quark systems along the spectator model. While the problem is of relevance for all forms of relativistic quantum mechanics, we specifically adhere to the point form, since it preserves the spectator character of the corresponding transition operators in any reference frame. The conditions imposed on the construction of point-form spectator-model operators are discussed and their implications are exemplified for mesonic decays of baryon resonances within a relativistic constituent quark model.

Covariant calculation of mesonic baryon decays

We present covariant predictions for pi and eta decay modes of N and Delta resonances from relativistic constituent-quark models based on one-gluon-exchange and Goldstone-boson-exchange dynamics. The results are calculated within the point-form approach to Poincare-invariant relativistic quantum mechanics applying a spectator-model decay operator. The direct predictions of the constituent-quark models for covariant pi and eta decay widths show a behaviour completely different from previous ones calculated in nonrelativistic or so-called semirelativistic approaches. It is found that the present theoretical results agree with experiment only in a few cases but otherwise always remain smaller than the experimental data (as compiled by the Particle Data Group). Possible reasons for this behaviour are discussed with regard to the quality of both the quark-model wave functions and the mesonic decay operator.

Hadronic Decays of Baryons in Point-Form Relativistic Quantum Mechanics

We discuss strong decays of baryon resonances within the concept of relativistic constituent quark models. In particular, we follow a Poincare-invariant approach along the point form of relativistic quantum mechanics. Here, we focus on pionic decay modes of N and Delta resonances. It is found that the covariant quark-model predictions calculated in the point-form spectator model in general underestimate the experimental data considerably. This points to a systematic defect in the used decay operator and/or the baryon wave functions. From a detailed investigation of the point-form decay operator it is seen that the requirement of translational invariance implies effective many-body contributions. Furthermore, one has to employ a normalization factor in the definition of the decay operator in the point-form spectator model. Our analysis suggests that this normalization factor is best chosen consistently with the one used for the electromagnetic and axial current operators for elastic nucleon form factors.
