The ALPINE-CRISTAL-JWST Survey: JWST/IFU Optical Observations for 18 Main-Sequence Galaxies at z=4-6

To fully characterize the formation and evolution of galaxies, we need to observe their stars, gas, and dust on resolved spatial scales. We present the ALPINE-CRISTAL-JWST survey, which combines kpc-resolved imaging and spectroscopy from HST, JWST, and ALMA for 18 representative main-sequence galaxies at z=4-6 and log(M/$M_\odot$) > 9.5 to study their star formation, chemical properties, and extended gas reservoirs. The co-spatial measurements resolving the ionized gas, molecular gas, stars, and dust on 1-2 kpc scales make this a unique benchmark sample for the study of galaxy formation and evolution at $z\sim5$, connecting the Epoch of Reionization with the cosmic noon. In this paper, we outline the survey goals and sample selection, and present a summary of the available data for the 18 galaxies. In addition, we measure spatially integrated quantities (such as global gas metallicity), test different star formation rate indicators, and quantify the presence of H$\alpha$ halos. Our targeted galaxies are relatively metal rich (10-70% solar), complementary to JWST samples at lower stellar mass, and there is broad agreement between different star formation indicators. One galaxy has the signature of an active galactic nuclei (AGN) based on its emission line ratios. Six show broad H$\alpha$~emission suggesting type 1 AGN candidates. We conclude with an outlook on the exciting science that will be pursued with this unique sample in forthcoming papers.

CMOS pixel sensors optimized for large ionizing dynamic

Monolithic active pixel sensors (MAPS) are now well established as a technology for tracking charged particles, especially when low material budget is desirable. For such applications, sensors focus on spatial resolution and pixels with digital output or modest charge measurement ability are well suited. Within the European Union STRONG-2020 project, which focuses on experiments using hadrons, the TIIMM (Tracking and Ions Identifications with Minimal Material budget) joint research activity intends to expand granular MAPS capacity to energy-loss ({\Delta}E) measurement for ion species identification. The TIIMM prototypes are developed in the Tower Jazz 180 nm CMOS image sensor (CIS) process. The Time-Over-Threshold (ToT) method is applied to the sensor for the energy-loss measurement. The main design details and the preliminary test results from laboratory measurements of the initial TIIMM prototype are presented in this work.

Competing magnetic orders in quantum critical Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$

We investigated Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, a quantum critical metal that shows a metamagnetic quantum phase transition and electronic nematicity, through density functional calculations. These predict a ferromagnetic ground state in contrast to the experimentally observed paramagnetism, raising the question of competing magnetic states and associated fluctuations that may suppress magnetic order. We did a search to identify such low energy antiferromagnetically ordered metastable states. We find that the lowest energy antiferromagnetic state has a striped order. This corresponds to the E-type order that has been shown to be induced by Mn alloying. We also note significant transport anisotropy in this E-type ordered state. These results are discussed in relation to experimental observations.

Full field electron spectromicroscopy applied to ferroelectric materials

The application of PhotoEmission Electron Microscopy (PEEM) and Low Energy Electron Microscopy (LEEM) techniques to the study of the electronic and chemical structure of ferroelectric materials is reviewed. Electron optics in both techniques gives spatial resolution of a few tens of nanometres. PEEM images photoelectrons whereas LEEM images reflected and elastically backscattered electrons. Both PEEM and LEEM can be used in direct and reciprocal space imaging. Together, they provide access to surface charge, work function, topography, chemical mapping, surface crystallinity and band structure. Examples of applications for the study of ferroelectric thin films and single crystals are presented.

Predicting a Ferrimagnetic Phase of Zn2FeOsO6 with Strong Magnetoelectric Coupling

Multiferroic materials, in which ferroelectric and magnetic ordering coexist, are of fundamental interest for the development of novel memory devices that allow for electrical writing and non-destructive magnetic readout operation. The great challenge is to create room temperature multiferroic materials with strongly coupled ferroelectric and ferromagnetic (or ferrimagnetic) orderings. BiFeO3 has been the most heavily investigated single-phase multiferroic to date due to the coexistence of its magnetic order and ferroelectric order at room temperature. However, there is no net magnetic moment in the cycloidal (antiferromagnetic-like) magnetic state of bulk BiFeO3, which severely limits its realistic applications in electric field controlled spintronic devices. Here, we predict that double perovskite Zn2FeOsO6 is a new multiferroic with properties superior to BiFeO3. First, there are strong ferroelectricity and strong ferrimagnetism at room temperature in Zn2FeOsO6. Second, the easy-plane of the spontaneous magnetization can be switched by an external electric field, evidencing the strong magnetoelectric coupling existing in this system. Our results suggest that ferrimagnetic 3d-5d double perovskite may therefore be used to achieve voltage control of magnetism in future spintronic devices.

Expressing Properties in Second and Third Order Logic: Hypercube Graphs and SATQBF

It follows from the famous Fagin's theorem that all problems in NP are expressible in existential second-order logic (ESO), and vice versa. Indeed, there are well-known ESO characterizations of NP-complete problems such as 3-colorability, Hamiltonicity and clique. Furthermore, the ESO sentences that characterize those problems are simple and elegant. However, there are also NP problems that do not seem to possess equally simple and elegant ESO characterizations. In this work, we are mainly interested in this latter class of problems. In particular, we characterize in second-order logic the class of hypercube graphs and the classes SATQBF_k of satisfiable quantified Boolean formulae with k alternations of quantifiers. We also provide detailed descriptions of the strategies followed to obtain the corresponding nontrivial second-order sentences. Finally, we sketch a third-order logic sentence that defines the class SATQBF = \bigcup_{k \geq 1} SATQBF_k. The sub-formulae used in the construction of these complex second- and third-order logic sentences, are good candidates to form part of a library of formulae. Same as libraries of frequently used functions simplify the writing of complex computer programs, a library of formulae could potentially simplify the writing of complex second- and third-order queries, minimizing the probability of error.

Thickness-dependent polarization of strained BiFeO3 films with constant tetragonality

We measure the remnant polarization of ferroelectric domains in BiFeO3 films down to 3.6 nm using low energy electron and photoelectron emission microscopy. The measured polarization decays strongly below a critical thickness of 5-7 nm predicted by continuous medium theory whereas the tetragonal distortion does not change. We resolve this apparent contradiction using first-principles-based effective Hamiltonian calculations. In ultra thin films the energetics of near open circuit electrical boundary conditions, i.e. unscreened depolarizing field, drive the system through a phase transition from single out-of-plane polarization to a nanoscale stripe domains, giving rise to an average remnant polarization close to zero as measured by the electron microscopy whilst maintaining the relatively large tetragonal distortion imposed by the non-zero polarization state of each individual domain.
