Production mechanisms and polarization observables for p + d -> He(3) + pi(o) near threshold

Pion production at threshold from nucleon-deuteron collisions is considered, with reference to the outgoing channel where the three-nucleon system is bound. The available experimental data are compared with calculations using accurate nuclear wavefunctions coming from rigorous solutions of the three-nucleon quantum mechanical equations. The dominant contributions for pion production are obtained through matrix elements involving pion-nucleon rescattering mechanisms in S- and P-waves. S-wave rescattering includes also an isoscalar contribution which is enhanced because of the off-shell effects. P-wave rescattering includes also diagrams involving explicitly the Delta degrees of freedom. It is found that the pion-nucleon S-wave off-shell effects in the isospin-even channel are of considerable importance. Initial-state interactions between the proton and the deuteron have in general minor effects on the spin-averaged and spin-dependent observables, except when the polarization observable involves interference terms amongst the various helicity amplitudes. Irreducible pionic effects in nucleon-deuteron scattering below 20 MeV

The consequences of a recently introduced irreducible pionic effect in low energy nucleon-deuteron scattering are analyzed. Differential cross-sections, nucleon (vector) and deuteron (vector and tensor) analyzing powers, and four different polarization transfer coefficients have been considered. This 3NF-like effect is generated by the pion-exchange diagram in presence of a two-nucleon correlation and is partially cancelled by meson-retardation contributions. Indications are provided that such type of effects are capable to selectively increase the vector (nucleon and deuteron) analyzing powers, while in the considered energy range they are almost negligible on the differential cross sections. These indications, observed with different realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions, provide additional evidences that such 3NF-like effects have indeed the potential to solve the puzzle of the vector analyzing powers. Smaller but non negligible effects are observed for the other spin observables. In some cases, we find that the modifications introduced by such pionic effects on these spin observables (other than the vector analyzing powers) are significant and interesting and could be observed by experiments.

The one-pion-exchange three-nucleon force and the $A_y$ puzzle

We consider a new three-nucleon force generated by the exchange of one pion in the presence of a 2N correlation. The underlying irreducible diagram has been recently suggested by the authors as a possible candidate to explain the puzzle of the vector analyzing powers $A_y$ and $iT_{11}$ for nucleon-deuteron scattering. Herein, we have calculated the elastic neutron-deuteron differential cross section, $A_y$, $iT_{11}$, $T_{20}$, $T_{21}$, and $T_{22}$ below break-up threshold by accurately solving the Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas equations with realistic interactions. We have also studied how $A_y$ evolves below 30 MeV. The results indicate that this new 3NF diagram provides one possible additional contribution, with the correct spin-isospin structure, for the explanation of the origin of this puzzle.

Three-nucleon portrait with pion

We report on recent results obtained by the above collaboration on the collision processes involving three nucleons, where we pay particular attention on the dynamical role of the pion. After discussing the case at intermediate energies, where real pions can be produced and detected, we have considered the case at lower energies, where the pions being exchanged are virtual. The study has revealed the presence of some new pion-exchange mechanisms, which leads to a new three-nucleon force of tensor structure. Recently, the effect of this tensor three-nucleon force to the spin observables for neutron-deuteron scattering at low energy has been analyzed, and will be briefly reviewed.

Photonuclear Reactions of Three-Nucleon Systems

We discuss the available data for the differential and the total cross section for the photodisintegration of $^3$He and $^3$H and the corresponding inverse reactions below $E_γ= 100$ MeV by comparing with our calculations using realistic $NN$ interactions. The theoretical results agree within the errorbars with the data for the total cross sections. Excellent agreement is achieved for the angular distribution in case of $^3$He, whereas for $^3$H a discrepancy between theory and experiment is found.

Why is the three-nucleon force so odd?

By considering a class of diagrams which has been overlooked also in the most recent literature on three-body forces, we extract a new contribution to the three-nucleon interaction which specifically acts on the triplet odd states of the two nucleon subsystem. In the static approximation, this 3N-force contribution is fixed by the underlying 2N interaction, so in principle there are no free parameters to adjust. The 2N amplitude however enters in the 3NF diagram in a form which cannot be directly accessed or constrained by NN phase-shift analysis. We conclude that this new 3N-force contribution provides a mechanism which implies that the presence of the third nucleon modifies the p-wave (and possibly the f-wave) components of the 2N subsystem in the triplet-isotriplet channels.

Spin observables for pion production from pd collisions

We have calculated the proton analyzing power A_{y0} of the pion-production reaction from pd collisions for one energy close to threshold and for another in the region of the $Δ$-resonance. A fair reproduction of the experimental data could be obtained in both cases with a model which includes isoscalar and isovector $πN$ rescatterings in s waves, as well as the p-wave rescattering mechanisms mediated by the $πNN$ and $πN Δ$ vertices. For the analyzing power at threshold we found that the initial-state interaction (ISI) is also quite important.

Few-Body States in Fermi-Systems and Condensation Phenomena

Residual interactions in many particle systems lead to strong correlations. A multitude of spectacular phenomenae in many particle systems are connected to correlation effects in such systems, e.g. pairing, superconductivity, superfluidity, Bose-Einstein condensation etc. Here we focus on few-body bound states in a many-body surrounding.

Three-Body Scattering Below Breakup Threshold: An Approach without using Partial Waves

The Faddeev equation for three-body scattering below the three-body breakup threshold is directly solved without employing a partial wave decomposition. In the simplest form it is a three-dimensional integral equation in four variables. From its solution the scattering amplitude is obtained as function of vector Jacobi momenta. Based on Malfliet-Tjon type potentials differential and total cross sections are calculated. The numerical stability of the algorithm is demonstrated and the properties of the scattering amplitude discussed.

Three-body properties in hot and dense nuclear matter

We derive three-body equations valid at finite densities and temperatures. These are based on the cluster mean field approach consistently including proper self energy corrections and the Pauli blocking. As an application we investigate the binding energies of triton and determine the Mott densities and momenta relevant for a many particle description of nuclear matter in a generalized Beth-Uhlenbeck approach. The method, however is not restricted to nuclear physics problems but may also be relevant, e.g., to treat three-particle correlations in weekly doped semiconducters or strongly coupled dense plasmas.

Comparison of triton bound state properties using different separable representations of realistic potentials

The quality of two different separable expansion methods ({\sl W} matrix and Ernst-Shakin-Thaler) is investigated. We compare the triton binding energies and components of the triton wave functions obtained in this way with the results of a direct two-dimensional treatment. The Paris, Bonn {\sl A} and Bonn {\sl B} potentials are employed as underlying two-body interactions, their total angular momenta being incorporated up to $j \leq 2$. It is found that the most accurate results based on the Ernst-Shakin-Thaler method agree within 1.5% or better with the two-dimensional calculations, whereas the results for the {\sl W}-matrix representation are less accurate.

Radiative capture of protons by deuterons

The differential cross section for radiative capture of protons by deuterons is calculated using different realistic NN interactions. We compare our results with the available experimental data below $E_x = 20 MeV$. Excellent agreement is found when taking into account meson exchange currents, dipole and quadrupole contributions, and the full initial state interaction. There is only a small difference between the magnitudes of the cross sections for the different potentials considered. The angular distributions, however, are practically potential independent.

Shadowing and Antishadowing Effects in a Model for the n+d Total Cross Section

Based on the multiple scattering series incorporated in the Faddeev scheme the high energy limit of the total n+d cross section is evaluated in a nonrelativistic model system where spins are neglected. In contrast to the naive expectation that the total n+d scattering cross section is the sum of two NN cross sections we find two additional effects resulting from rescattering processes. These additional terms have different signs (shadowing and antishadowing) and a different behavior as function of the energy. Our derivation of these results which are already known from Glauber theory is based on the analytical evaluation of elastic transition amplitudes in the high energy limit. It does not depend on the diffraction type assumptions connected with Glauber theory. In this model of spinless Yukawa type forces (with no absorption) the total n+d cross section does not approach twice the NN total cross section in the high energy limit but rather approaches the total NN cross section multiplied by a number larger than two. Therefore, the enhancement effect resulting from rescattering is larger than the shadowing effect, which decreases faster with energy.

Three Body Bound State Calculations without Angular Momentum Decomposition

The Faddeev equations for the three body bound state are solved directly as three dimensional integral equation without employing partial wave decomposition. The numerical stability of the algorithm is demonstrated. The three body binding energy is calculated for Malfliet-Tjon type potentials and compared with results obtained from calculations based on partial wave decomposition. The full three body wave function is calculated as function of the vector Jacobi momenta. It is shown that it satisfies the Schrödinger equation with high accuracy. The properties of the full wave function are displayed and compared to the ones of the corresponding wave functions obtained as finite sum of partial wave components. The agreement between the two approaches is essentially perfect in all respects.

Spin observables for the pd <-> pi+ t process around the Delta resonance

The proton analyzing power Ay0 and the deuteron tensor analyzing power T20 are evaluated for the pd <-> pi+ t process, in the energy region around and above the Delta resonance. These calculations extend a previous analysis of the excitation function and differential cross-section, based on a model embodying one-- and two-body p-wave absorption mechanisms and isobar excitation. The three-nucleon bound state and the pd scattering state are evaluated through Faddeev techniques for both the Bonn and Paris potentials. The spin variables exhibit a greater sensitivity to the number of included three-nucleon partial waves than the cross-sections, while the role played by the initial-- or final-state interactions appears to be small. The results for the tensor analyzing power at backward angles show a non-negligible dependence on the potentials employed, consistently with what has been previously found for the cross-sections. The calculation of spin observables gives a clear indication that other reaction mechanisms (presumably s-wave two-body absorption) have to be included in the model, in order to reproduce the experimental data below the Delta-resonance, in analogy with the simpler pp <-> pi+ d process.

Photodisintegration of the triton with realistic potentials

The process $γ+ t \to n + d$ is treated by means of three-body integral equations employing in their kernel the W-Matrix representation of the subsystem amplitudes. As compared to the plane wave (Born) approximation the full solution of the integral equations, which takes into account the final state interaction, shows at low energies a 24% enhancement. The calculations are based on the semirealistic Malfliet-Tjon and the realistic Paris and Bonn B potentials. For comparison with earlier calculations we also present results for the Yamaguchi potential. In the low-energy region a remarkable potential dependence is observed, which vanishes at higher energies.

Photodisintegration of three- and four- nucleon systems

Three- and four-nucleon photodisintegration processes are quite efficiently treated by means of effective two-body integral equations in momentum space. We recall some aspects of their derivation, present previous and most recent results obtained within this framework, and discuss general features, trends and effects observed in these investigations: At low energies final-state interaction plays an important role. Even more pronounced is the effect of meson exchange currents. A considerable potential dependence shows up in the low-energy peak region. The different peak heights are found to be closely correlated with the corresponding binding energies. Above the peak region only the difference between potentials with or without p-wave contributions remains relevant. In the differential cross sections the electric quadrupole contributions have to be taken into account. The remarkable agreement between theory and experiment in $p$-$d$ radiative capture is achieved only when incorporating this contribution, together with most of the above-mentioned effects. In the final part of this report we briefly review also methods developed, and results achieved in three- and four- nucleon electrodisintegration. We, in particular, compare them with a recent access to this problem, based on the construction of nucleon-nucleus potentials via Marchenko inversion theory.
