Polynomial potentials and nilpotent groups

This paper deals with the partial solution of the energy-eigenvalue problem for one-dimensional Schr\"odinger operators of the form $H_N=X_0^2+V_N$, where $V_N=X_N^2+\alpha X_{N-1}$ is a polynomial potential of degree $(2N-2)$ and $X_i$ are the generators of an irreducible representation of a particular nilpotent group $\mathcal{G}_N$. Algebraization of the eigenvalue problem is achieved for eigenfunctions of the form $\sum_{k=0}^M a_k X_2^k \exp(-\int dx\, X_N)$. It is shown that the overdetermined linear system of equations for the coefficients $a_k$ has a nontrivial solution, if the parameter $\alpha$ and $(N-3)$ Casimir invariants satisfy certain constraints. This general setting works for even $N\geq 2$ and can also be applied to odd $N\geq 3$, if the potential is symmetrized by considering it as function of $|x|$ rather than $x$. It provides a unified approach to quasi-exactly solvable polynomial interactions, including the harmonic oscillator, and extends corresponding results known from the literature. Explicit expressions for energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are given for the quasi-exactly solvable sextic, octic and decatic potentials. The case of $E=0$ solutions for general $N$ and $M$ is also discussed. As physical application, the movement of a charged particle in an electromagnetic field of pertinent polynomial form is shortly sketched.

Cluster Separability in Relativistic Few Body Problems

A convenient framework for dealing with hadron structure and hadronic physics in the few-GeV energy range is relativistic quantum mechanics. Unlike relativistic quantum field theory, one deals with a fixed, or at least restricted number of degrees of freedom while maintaining relativistic invariance. For systems of interacting particles this is achieved by means of the, so called, "Bakamjian-Thomas construction", which is a systematic procedure for implementing interaction terms in the generators of the Poincare group such that their algebra is preserved. Doing relativistic quantum mechanics in this way one, however, faces a problem connected with the physical requirement of cluster separability as soon as one has more than two interacting particles. Cluster separability, or sometimes also termed "macroscopic causality", is the property that if a system is subdivided into subsystems which are then separated by a sufficiently large spacelike distance, these subsystems should behave independently. In the present contribution we discuss the problem of cluster separability and sketch the procedure to resolve it.

A perturbative QCD approach to $π^- p \rightarrow D^- Λ_c^+$

We employ the generalized parton picture to analyze the reaction $π^- p \rightarrow D^- Λ_c^+$. Thereby it is assumed that the process amplitude factorizes into one for the perturbatively calculable subprocess $\bar{u}\ u\rightarrow \bar{c}\ c$ and hadronic matrix elements that can be parameterized in terms of generalized parton distributions for the $π^-\rightarrow D^-$ and $p\rightarrow Λ_c^+$ transitions, respectively. Representing these parton distributions in terms of valence-quark light-cone wave functions for $π$, $D$, $p$ and $Λ_c$ allows us to make numerical predictions for unpolarized differential and integrated cross sections as well as spin observables. In the kinematical region where this approach is supposed to work, i.e. $s\gtrsim 20$~GeV$^2$ and in the forward hemisphere, the resulting cross sections are of the order of nb. This is a finding that could be of interest in view of plans to measure $π^- p \rightarrow D^- Λ_c^+$, e.g., at J-PARC or COMPASS.

The pion-cloud contribution to the electromagnetic nucleon structure

The present contribution continues and extends foregoing work on the calculation of electroweak form factors of hadrons using the point-form of relativistic quantum mechanics. Here we are particularly interested in studying pionic effects on the electromagnetic structure of the nucleon. To this aim we employ a hybrid constituent-quark model that comprises, in addition to the $3q$ valence component, also a $3q$+$π$ non-valence component. With a simple wave function for the $3q$ component we get reasonable results for the nucleon form factors. In accordance with other authors we find that the pionic effect is significant only below $Q^2\lesssim 0.5$~GeV$^2$.

Hard Excluseive $Φ$ and $J/Ψ$ Photoproduction off a Proton

We study the photoproduction of the vector mesons $Φ$ and $J/Ψ$ off a proton in the kinematical regime of large energies and scattering angles within the framework of perturbative QCD. Our investigations are based on the hard scattering approach. This means that the hadrons are replaced by their valence Fock states and scattering on the partonic level is described by tree graphs in which the large transferred momentum is redistributed between the valence partons via the exchange of hard gluons. We find that the unpolarized photoproduction cross sections are dominated by Compton-scattering-like graphs in which the photon couples to the proton, whereas vector-meson-dominance-like graphs, in which the photon fluctuates into the heavy quark-antiquark pair which then exchanges two gluons with the proton, play a minor role. We give explicit predictions for unpolarized scattering cross sections and compare them with experimental data where possible.

Hadron structure within the point form of relativistic quantum mechanics

We present an outline of recent developments in the field of hadron form-factor calculations within constituent-quark models using the point form of relativistic quantum mechanics. Our method to calculate currents and form factors is exemplified by means of the weak $B\rightarrow D$ transition. We present results for weak $B\rightarrow D$ transition form factors in the space- and the time-like momentum-transfer region. We discuss how wrong cluster properties, which one has to deal with when employing relativistic quantum mechanics, affect these form factors and we estimate the role non-valence, Z-graph contributions may play for decay kinematics.

Production of heavy meson pairs in $p\bar{p}$ collisions within a double handbag approach

We study the pair-production of heavy mesons in proton-antiproton annihilations within a perturbative QCD-motivated framework. In particular we investigate $p \bar{p} \rightarrow \overline{D^0} D^0$ within a double handbag approach, where a hard subprocess factorizes from soft hadronic matrix elements. The soft matrix elements can be parametrized by transition distribution amplitudes, which are off-diagonal in flavor space. The transition distribution amplitudes are modelled as overlaps of light-cone wave functions. We obtain rather robust model results for $p \bar{p} \rightarrow \overline{D^0} D^0$ cross sections, which are expected to be measured at the future $\bar{\text{P}}\text{ANDA}$ detector at GSI-FAIR.

Double handbag description of proton-antiproton annihilation into a heavy meson pair

We propose to describe the process $ p \bar{p} \,\to\, \bar{D^0} D^0$ in a perturbative QCD motivated framework where a double-handbag hard process $ u d \bar u \bar d \to \bar{c} c$ factorizes from transition distribution amplitudes, which are quasi forward hadronic matrix elements of $Ψ_q Ψ_q Ψ_c $ operators, where q denotes light quarks and c denotes the heavy quark. We advocate that the charm-quark mass acts as the large scale allowing this factorization. We calculate this process in the simplified framework of the scalar diquark model and present the expected cross sections for the PANDA experiment at GSI-FAIR.

Hadron Resonances Within a Constituent-Quark Model

In order to get a more realistic description of the hadron spectrum we extend a constituent-quark model by explicit mesonic degrees of freedom. The resulting system of constituent (anti)quarks, which are subject to an instantaneous confining force, and mesons, which couple directly to the quarks, is treated by means of a relativistic coupled-channel framework. It can be formally shown that the mass-eigenvalue problem for such a system is equivalent to a hadronic eigenvalue problem in which the eigenstates of the pure confinement potential (bare hadrons) are coupled via meson loops. Following this kind of approach we have calculated hadron masses and decay widths for a simple toy model.

A relativistic coupled-channel formalism for the pion form factor

The electromagnetic form factor of a confined quark-antiquark pair is calculated within the framework of point-form relativistic quantum mechanics. The dynamics of theexchanged photon is explicitly taken into account by treating theelectromagnetic scattering of an electron by a meson as a relativistic two-channel problem for a Bakamjian-Thomas type mass operator. This approach guarantees Poincare invariance. Using a Feshbach reduction the coupled-channel problem can be converted into a one-channel problem for the elastic electron-meson channel. By comparing the one-photon-exchange optical potential at the constituent and hadronic levels, we are able to unambiguously identify the electromagnetic meson form factor. Violations of cluster-separability properties, which are inherent in the Bakamjian-Thomas approach, become negligible for sufficiently large invariant mass of the electron-meson system. In the limit of an infinitely large invariant mass, an equivalence with form-factor calculations done in front-form relativistic quantum mechanics is established analytically.

Proton-Antiproton Annihilation into a Lambda_c-Antilambda_c Pair

The process p-pbar -> Lambda_c-Antilambda_c is investigated within the handbag approach. It is shown that the dominant dynamical mechanism, characterized by the partonic subprocess u-ubar -> c-cbar factorizes in the sense that only the subprocess contains highly virtual partons, a gluon to lowest order of perturbative QCD, while the hadronic matrix elements embody only soft scales and can be parameterized in terms of helicity flip and non-flip generalized parton distributions. Modelling these parton distributions by overlaps of light-cone wave functions for the involved baryons we are able to predict cross sections and spin correlation parameters for the process of interest.

$p\bar{p} \to \Lambda_c \bar{\Lambda}_c$ within a Handbag Picture -- Cross Section and Spin Observables

We study the process $p\bar{p} \to \Lambda_c \bar{\Lambda}_c$ within the generalized parton picture. Our starting point is the double handbag diagram which factorizes into soft generalized parton distributions and a hard subprocess amplitude for $u \bar{u} \to c \bar{c}$. Our cross-section predictions may become interesting in view of forthcoming experiments at FAIR in Darmstadt.

$p\bar{p} \to Λ_c \barΛ_c$ within the generalized parton picture - first results

We study proton-antiproton annihilation into $Λ_c \barΛ_c$ pairs within the generalized parton picture. Our starting point is the double handbag diagram which is shown to factorize into soft generalized parton distributions for the $p \to Λ_c$ (and $\bar{p} \to \barΛ_c$) transition and a hard subprocess amplitude for $u \bar{u} \to c \bar{c}$. Thereby the mass of the charm quark is taken as the hard scale so that our results are not restricted to large scattering angles and/or incredibly large energies. Modelling the generalized parton distributions for the $p\to Λ_c$ transition by an overlap of simple quark-diquark light-cone wave functions we make first predictions for $p\to Λ_c$ transition form factors and unpolarized $p\bar{p} \to Λ_c \barΛ_c$ cross sections. Our findings may become interesting in view of forthcoming experiments at FAIR in Darmstadt.

Point-form quantum field theory and meson form factors

We shortly review point-form quantum field theory, i.e. the canonical quantization of a relativistic field theory on a Lorentz-invariant surface of the form $x_μx^μ= τ^2$. As an example of how point-form quantum field theory may enter the framework of relativistic quantum mechanics we discuss the calculation of the electromagnetic form factor of a confined quark-antiquark pair (e.g. the pion).

Point-form quantum field theory

We examine canonical quantization of relativistic field theories on the forward hyperboloid, a Lorentz-invariant surface of the form $x_μx^μ= τ^2$. This choice of quantization surface implies that all components of the 4-momentum operator are affected by interactions (if present), whereas rotation and boost generators remain interaction free -- a feature characteristic of Dirac's `` point-form\rq\rq of relativistic dynamics. Unlike previous attempts to quantize fields on space-time hyperboloids, we keep the usual plane-wave expansion of the field operators and consider evolution of the system generated by the 4-momentum operator. We verify that the Fock-space representations of the Poincaré generators for free scalar and spin-1/2 fields look the same as for equal-time quantization. Scattering is formulated for interacting fields in a covariant interaction picture and it is shown that the familiar perturbative expansion of the S-operator is recovered by our approach. An appendix analyzes special distributions, integrals over the forward hyperboloid, that are used repeatedly in the paper.

The reaction ${n} {p} \to {p} {p} π^{-}$ from threshold up to 570 MeV

The reaction ${n} {p} \to {p} {p} π^{-}$ has been studied in a kinematically complete measurement with a large acceptance time-of-flight spectrometer for incident neutron energies between threshold and 570 MeV. The proton-proton invariant mass distributions show a strong enhancement due to the pp($^{1}{S}_{0}$) final state interaction. A large anisotropy was found in the pion angular distributions in contrast to the reaction ${p}{p} \to {p}{p} π^{0}$. At small energies, a large forward/backward asymmetry has been observed. From the measured integrated cross section $σ({n}{p} \to {\rm p}{p} π^{-})$, the isoscalar cross section $σ_{01}$ has been extracted. Its energy dependence indicates that mainly partial waves with Sp final states contribute. Note: Due to a coding error, the differential cross sections ${d σ}/{d M_{pp}}$ as shown in Fig. 9 are too small by a factor of two, and inn Table 3 the differential cross sections ${d σ}/{d Ω_π^{*}}$ are too large by a factor of $10/2π$. The integrated cross sections and all conclusions remain unchanged. A corresponding erratum has been submitted and accepted by European Physics Journal.
