Modeling Light Signals Using Data from the First Pulsed Neutron Source Program at the DUNE Vertical Drift ColdBox Test Facility at CERN Neutrino Platform

In this paper, we present a first quantitative test of detected light signals produced in a pulsed neutron source run in a small vertical drift LArTPC at the CERN neutrino platform ColdBox test facility. The ColdBox cryostat, detectors, neutron sources, and particle interactions are modeled and simulated using Fluka. A good agreement is found in the detected number of photoelectrons, with values below 650 photoelectrons in both data and simulation, for all four X-ARAPUCA photodetectors on the cathode in the LArTPC. A time constant is also fitted from the neutron-beam-off light signal spectrum and found consistent between data and MC. Several important systematic effects are discussed and serve as guides for future runs at larger LArTPCs.

Characterization and Novel Application of Power Over Fiber for Electronics in a Harsh Environment

Power-over-Fiber (PoF) technology has been used extensively in settings where high voltages require isolation from ground. In a novel application of PoF, power is provided to photon detector modules located on a surface at $\sim$ 300 kV with respect to ground in the planned DUNE experiment. In cryogenic environments, PoF offers a reliable means of power transmission, leveraging optical fibers to transfer power with minimal system degradation. PoF technology excels in maintaining low noise levels when delivering power to sensitive electronic systems operating in extreme temperatures and high voltage environments. This paper presents the R$\&$D effort of PoF in extreme conditions and underscores its capacity to revolutionize power delivery and management in critical applications, offering a dependable solution with low noise, optimal efficiency, and superior isolation.

Study of Novel Sparse Array Design Based on the Maximum Inter-Element Spacing Criterion

A novel sparse array (SA) structure is proposed based on the maximum inter-element spacing (IES) constraint (MISC) criterion. Compared with the traditional MISC array, the proposed SA configurations, termed as improved MISC (IMISC) has significantly increased uniform degrees of freedom (uDOF) and reduced mutual coupling. In particular, the IMISC arrays are composed of six uniform linear arrays (ULAs), which can be determined by an IES set. The IES set is constrained by two parameters, namely the maximum IES and the number of sensors. The uDOF of the IMISC arrays is derived and the weight function of the IMISC arrays is analyzed as well. The proposed IMISC arrays have a great advantage in terms of uDOF against the existing SAs, while their mutual coupling remains at a low level. Simulations are carried out to demonstrate the advantages of the IMISC arrays.

Structure and electronic properties of the ($\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$)$R30^{\circ}$ SnAu$_2$/Au(111) surface alloy

We have investigated the atomic and electronic structure of the ($\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$)$R30^{\circ}$ SnAu$_2$/Au(111) surface alloy. Low energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy measurements show that the native herringbone reconstruction of bare Au(111) surface remains intact after formation of a long range ordered ($\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$)$R30^{\circ}$ SnAu$_2$2/Au(111) surface alloy. Angle-resolved photoemission and two-photon photoemission spectroscopy techniques reveal Rashba-type spin-split bands in the occupied valence band with comparable momentum space splitting as observed for the Au(111) surface state, but with a hole-like parabolic dispersion. Our experimental findings are compared with density functional theory (DFT) calculation that fully support our experimental findings. Taking advantage of the good agreement between our DFT calculations and the experimental results, we are able to extract that the occupied Sn-Au hybrid band is of (s, d)-orbital character while the unoccupied Sn-Au hybrid bands are of (p, d)-orbital character. Hence, we can conclude that the Rashba-type spin splitting of the hole-like Sn-Au hybrid surface state is caused by the significant mixing of Au d- to Sn s-states in conjunction with the strong atomic spin-orbit coupling of Au, i.e., of the substrate.

Experimentally observed evolution between dynamic patterns and intrinsic localized modes in a driven nonlinear electrical cyclic lattice

Locked intrinsic localized modes (ILMs) and large amplitude lattice spatial modes (LSMs) have been experimentally measured for a driven 1-D nonlinear cyclic electric transmission line, where the nonlinear element is a saturable capacitor. Depending on the number of cells and electrical lattice damping a LSM of fixed shape can be tuned across the modal spectrum. Interestingly, by tuning the driver frequency away from this spectrum an LSM can be continuously converted into ILMs and visa versa. The differences in pattern formation between simulations and experimental findings are due to a low concentration of impurities. Through this novel nonlinear excitation and switching channel in cyclic lattices either energy balanced or unbalanced LSMs and ILMs may occur. Because of the general nature of these dynamical results for nonintegrable lattices applications are to be expected. The ultimate stability of driven aero machinery containing nonlinear periodic structures may be one example.

Raman spectroscopy at the edges of multilayer graphene

Edges naturally exist in a single-layer graphene sample. Similarly, individual graphene layers in a multilayer graphene sample contribute their own edges. We study the Raman spectrum at the edge of a graphene layer laid on n layer graphene (nLG). We found that the D band observed from the edge of the top graphene layer exhibits an identical line shape to that of disordered (n+1)LG induced by ion-implantation. Based on the spectral features of the D and 2D bands, we identified two types of alignment configurations at the edges of mechanically-exfoliated bilayer and trilayer graphenes, whose edges are well-aligned from their optical images.

Dynamics of impurity attraction and repulsion of an intrinsic localized mode in a driven 1-D cantilever array

Both low frequency and high frequency impurity modes have been produced in a SiN micromechanical cantilever array by illumination with either an infrared or visible laser. When such laser-induced impurities are placed near a driven intrinsic localized mode (ILM) it is either repelled or attracted. By measuring the linear response spectrum for these two cases it was found that vibrational hopping of the ILM takes place when the natural frequency of the ILM and an even symmetry linear local mode are symmetrically located about the driven ILM frequency so that parametric excitation of these two linear modes is enhanced, amplifying the lateral motion of the ILM. Numerical simulations are consistent with these signature findings. It is also demonstrated that the correct sign of the observed interaction can be found with a harmonic lattice-impurity model but the magnitude of the effect is enhanced in a nonlinear lattice.

Intrinsic Localized Modes in a Nonlinear Electrical Lattice with Saturable Nonlinearity

This experimental study of driven intrinsic localized modes (ILMs) in an electronic circuit lattice with saturable nonlinearity follows the theoretical work of Hadzievski and coworkers. They proposed that a saturable nonlinearity could introduce transition points where localized excitations in nonintegrable lattices would move freely. In our experiments MOS capacitors provide the saturable nonlinearity in an electric lattice. Because of the soft nonlinearity driver locked, auto-resonance stationary ILMs are observed below the bottom of a linear frequency band of the lattice. With decreasing driver frequency the width of the ILM changes in a step-wise manner as does the softening of the barrier between site-centered and bond-centered ILM locations in agreement with theoretical expectations. However, the steps show hysteresis between up and down frequency scans and such hysteresis inhibits the free motion of ILMs.

Implementation of a single femtosecond optical frequency comb for rovibrational cooling

We show that a single femtosecond optical frequency comb may be used to induce two-photon transitions between molecular vibrational levels to form ultracold molecules, e.g., KRb. The phase across an individual pulse in the pulse train is sinusoidally modulated with a carefully chosen modulation amplitude and frequency. Piecewise adiabatic population transfer is fulfilled to the final state by each pulse in the applied pulse train providing a controlled population accumulation in the final state. Detuning the pulse train carrier and modulation frequency from one-photon resonances changes the time scale of molecular dynamics but leads to the same complete population transfer to the ultracold state. A standard optical frequency comb with no modulation is shown to induce similar dynamics leading to rovibrational cooling.

Experimental N V and Ne VIII low-temperature dielectronic recombination rate coefficients

The dielectronic recombination rate coefficients of N V and Ne VIII ions have been measured at a heavy-ion storage ring. The investigated energy ranges covered all dielectronic recombination resonances attached to 2s -> 2p (Delta n=0) core excitations. The rate coefficients in a plasma are derived and parameterized by using a convenient fit formula. The experimentally derived rate coefficients are compared with theoretical data by Colgan et al. (2004, A&A, 417, 1183) and Nahar & Pradhan (1997, ApJ, 111, 339) as well as with the recommended rate coefficients by Mazzotta et al. (1998, A&A, 133, 403). The data of Colgan et al. and Nahar & Pradhan reproduce the experiment very well over the temperature ranges where N V and Ne VIII are expected to exist in photoionized as well as in collisionally ionized plasmas. In contrast, the recommendation of Mazzotta et al. agrees with the experimental rate coefficient only in the temperature range of collisional ionization. At lower temperatures it deviates from the measured rate coefficient by orders of magnitude. In addition the influence of external electric fields with field strengths up to 1300 V/cm on the dielectronic recombination rate coefficient has been investigated.
