Recoil electron polarization-dependent T-odd correlations in neutrino elastic scattering on polarized electron target

Possible symmetry breaking tests with respect to the time inversion in the elastic scattering of neutrinos on polarized electrons are considered, assuming that the incoming neutrino beam is either longitudinally or transversely polarized, and both momentum and polarization of recoil electrons are observed. In the process, in addition to the standard interaction, the exotic scalar, pseudoscalar and tensor interactions can participate. Due to the nonstandard interactions, different types of triple T-odd products in the cross section may appear. We consider several experiments in which mixed products built of the recoil electron polarization and two other vector quantities (incoming neutrino momentum, its polarization, polarization of the electron target and outgoing electron momentum) can be identified. Observations of the T-odd correlations may indicate noninvariance under time reversal as well as the presence of exotic interactions. A complete analysis of the problem requires a precise determination of the possible contributions from the interactions mimicking the genuine violation of time reversal symmetry, e.g. final state interactions.

Neutrino elastic scattering on polarized electrons as a tool for probing the neutrino nature

Possibility of using the polarized electron target (PET) for testing the neutrino nature is considered. One assumes that the incoming electron neutrino ($ν_e$) beam is the superposition of left chiral states with right chiral ones. Consequently the non-vanishing transversal components of $ν_e$ spin polarization may appear, both T-even and T-odd. $ν_e$s are produced by the low energy monochromatic (un)polarized emitter located at a near distance from the hypothetical detector which is able to measure both the azimuthal angle and polar angle of the recoil electrons, and/or also the energy of the outgoing electrons with a high resolution. A detection process is the elastic scattering of $ν_e$s (Dirac or Majorana) on the polarized electrons. Left chiral (LC) $ν_e$s interact mainly by the standard $V - A$ interaction, while right chiral (RC) ones participate only in the non-standard $V + A$, scalar $S_R$, pseudoscalar $P_R$ and tensor $T_R$ interactions. All the interactions are of flavour-conserving type (FC). We show that a distinction between the Dirac and the Majorana $ν_e$ s is possible both for the longitudinal and the transversal $ν_e$ polarizations. In the first case a departure from the standard prediction of the azimuthal asymmetry of recoil electrons is caused by the interferences between the non-standard complex S and T couplings. Such a deviation would indicate the Dirac $ν_e$ nature and the presence of time reversal symmetry violation (TRSV) interactions. In the second case the azimuthal asymmetries, polar distribution and energy spectrum of scattered electrons are sensitive to the interference terms between the standard and exotic interactions, proportional to the various angular correlations. Our model-independent study is carried out for the flavour $ν_e$ eigenstates in the relativistic $ν_e$ limit.

On possibility of time reversal symmetry violation in neutrino elastic scattering on polarized electron target

In this paper, we indicate a possibility of utilizing the elastic scattering of the Dirac low energy ($\sim 1$ MeV) electron neutrinos ($ν_e$'s) on the polarized electron target (PET) in testing the time reversal symmetry violation (TRSV). We consider a scenario in which the incoming $ν_e$ beam is the superposition of left chiral (LC) and right chiral (RC) states. LC $ν_e$'s interact mainly by the standard $V - A$, while RC ones are only detected by the exotic $V + A$ and $S_R, P_R, T_R$ interactions. One assumes that the spin polarization vector of the initial $ν_e$'s is turned aside from the $ν_e$ momentum, and due to this the non-vanishing transversal component of the $ν_e$ spin polarization appears. We compute the differential cross section as a function of the recoil electron azimuthal angle and scattered electron energy, and show how the interference terms between standard $V-A$ and exotic $S_R, P_R, T_R$ couplings depend on the various angular correlations among the transversal $ν_e$ spin polarization, the polarization of the electron target, the incoming neutrino momentum and the outgoing electron momentum in the limit of relativistic $ν_e$. We illustrate how the maximal value of recoil electrons azimuthal asymmetry and the asymmetry axis location of outgoing electrons depend on the azimuthal angle of the transversal component of the $ν_e$ spin polarization, both for the time reversal symmetry conservation (TRSC) and TRSV. Next, we display that the electron energy spectrum and polar angle distribution of the recoil electrons are also sensitive to the interference terms between $V - A$ and $S_R, P_R, T_R$ couplings, proportional to the T-even and T-odd angular correlations. Our model-independent analysis is carried out for the flavor $ν_e$'s.

Probing neutrino nature at Borexino detector with chromium neutrino source

In this paper, we indicate a possibility of utilizing the intense chromium source ($\sim 370 PBq$) in probing the neutrino nature in low energy neutrino experiments with the ultra-low threshold and background real-time Borexino detector located near the source ($\sim 8 m$). We analyze the elastic scattering of electron neutrinos (Dirac or Majorana, respectively) on the unpolarized electrons in the relativistic neutrino limit. We assume that the incoming neutrino beam is the superposition of left-right chiral states. Left chiral neutrinos may be detected by the standard $V A$ and non-standard scalar $S_L$, tensor $T_L$ interactions, while right chiral ones partake only in the exotic $V + A$ and $S_R, T_R$ interactions. Our model-independent study is carried out for the flavour (current) neutrino eigenstates. We compute the expected event number for the standard $V-A$ interaction of the left chiral neutrinos using the current experimental values of standard couplings and in the case of left-right chiral superposition. We show that the significant decrement in the event number due to the interference terms between the standard and exotic interactions for the Majorana $ν_e$'s may appear. The $90 \%$ C. L. sensitivity contours in the planes of corresponding exotic couplings are also found. The presence of interferences in the Majorana case gives the stronger constraints than for the Dirac neutrinos, even if the neutrino source is placed outside the detector.

Azimuthal asymmetry of recoil electrons in neutrino-electron elastic scattering as signature of neutrino nature

In this paper, we show how a presence of the exotic scalar, tensor weak interactions in addition to the standard vector-axial (V-A) one may help to distinguish the Dirac from Majorana neutrinos in the elastic scattering of (anti)neutrino beam off the unpolarized electrons in the limit of vanishing (anti)neutrino mass. We assume that the incoming (anti)neutrino beam comes from the polarized muon decay at rest and is the left-right chiral mixture with assigned direction of the transversal spin polarization with respect to the production plane. We display that the azimuthal asymmetry in the angular distribution of recoil electrons is generated by the interference terms between the standard and exotic couplings, which are proportional to the transversal (anti)neutrino spin polarization and independent of the neutrino mass. This asymmetry for the Majorana neutrinos is distinct from the one for the Dirac neutrinos through the absence of interference between the standard and tensor couplings. Additionally, the interference term between the standard and scalar coupling of the only left chiral neutrinos, absent in the Dirac case, appears. We also indicate the possibility of utilizing the azimuthal asymmetry measurements to search for the new CP-violating phases. Our analysis is model-independent and consistent with the current upper limits on the non-standard couplings.

Right-handed chirality of muon neutrinos in polarized muon decay at rest

In this paper, we analyze the polarized muon decay at rest (PMDaR) admitting the non-standard V+A interaction in addition to the standard V-A interaction. We show that the angle-energy distribution of Dirac muon neutrinos is sensitive to the interference terms between the standard V-A coupling of left-chirality muon neutrino and exotic V+A coupling of right-chirality one, which are proportional to the transverse components of muon neutrino spin polarization. The interferences do not vanish in a massless limit and include the relative phases to test the CP violation (CPV). It allows to calculate a neutrino flux for an assumed configuration of detector in the case of SM prediction, and the upper limits on the neutrino flux for the left-right muon neutrino mixture. We also demonstrate that the effects of neutrino mass and mixing are tiny corrections and can be omitted. The most important conclusion is that even in the massless limit, there are physical effects connected with the mixture of left- and right-handed helicity components in a spin 1/2 quantum state, when exotic interaction V+A is admitted contrary to the electron observables, where all the possible interferences vanish.

CP violation in scattering of neutrinos on polarized proton target

In this paper, we analyze the elastic scattering of the muon neutrino beam on the polarized proton target (PPT), and predict how the existence of CP-violating phase between the complex vector V and axial A couplings of the left-chirality neutrinos affects the azimuthal dependence of the differential cross section. The neutrinos are assumed to be Dirac fermions with non-zero mass. We show that the azimuthal asymmetry of recoil protons does not depend on the neutrino mass and does not vanish even if $β_{VA} = 0$. The CP-breaking phase $β_{VA}$ could be detected by measuring the maximal asymmetry of the differential cross section. We also indicate the possibility of using the PPT to distinguish the detector background from the neutrino interactions. Our analysis is model-independent and the results are presented in a limit of infinitesimally small neutrino mass.

Neutrinos Polarimetry in Muon Decay

We consider massive Dirac electron antineutrino to be observed in the muon decay, $μ^{-} \rightarrow e^- +\barν_{e} + ν_μ$, at rest in the LAB reference frame. A computation of $\barν_{e}$ differential direct spectral shape and angular distribution was performed. This has resulted in transverse component of the neutrino polarization emerging from the nonstandard S, T sector of the Lorentz structure in the Fermi leptonic charged weak interaction. The calculation is based on empirical values of the coupling parameters.

Polarized Muon Decay at Rest with V+A Interaction

In this paper, we analyze the polarized muon decay at rest (PMDaR) and elastic neutrino-electron scattering (ENES) admitting the non-standard V+A interaction in addition to standard V-A interaction. Considerations are made for Dirac massive muon neutrino and electron antineutrino. Moreover, muon neutrinos are transversely polarized. It means that the outgoing muon-neutrino beam is a mixture of the left- and right-chirality muon neutrinos and has a fixed direction of transverse spin polarization with respect to production plane. We show that the angle-energy distribution of muon neutrinos contains the interference terms between the standard V-A and exotic V+A couplings, which are proportional to the transverse components of muon neutrino spin polarization. They do not vanish in a limit of massless neutrino and include the relative phases to test the CP violation. In consequence, it allows to calculate a neutrino flux and an expected event number in the ENES (detection process) both for the standard model prediction and the case of neutrino left-right mixture.

CP Violation in Antineutrino-Electron Elastic Scattering

Elastic scattering of transversely polarized electron antineutrino beam off unpolarized electrons can be used to detect the CP-violating effects by measuring the azimuthal asymmetry of recoil electrons caused by the interference terms between the standard vector $c_{V}^{L}$, axial $c_{A}^{L}$ couplings of left-chirality antineutrinos and exotic scalar $c_{S}^{R}$ coupling of right-chirality ones in the differential cross section. It would be a positive evidence for the existence of the exotic antineutrino states. Moreover, we also show that the differential cross section for the $\overlineν e^- $ scattering can be obtained from the one for the $νe$ scattering, if one makes the substitution $c_{T}^{R} \to -c_{T}^{R}$, $c_{A}^{L} \to -c_{A}^{L}$, ${\bf q}\to -{\bf q}$, ${\boldmath $\hatη_ν$}\to -{\boldmath $\hatη_ν$}$.
