Pristine quantum criticality in a Kondo semimetal

The observation of quantum criticality in diverse classes of strongly correlated electron systems has been instrumental in establishing ordering principles, discovering new phases, and identifying the relevant degrees of freedom and interactions. At focus so far have been insulators and metals. Semimetals, which are of great current interest as candidate phases with nontrivial topology, are much less explored in experiments. Here we study the Kondo semimetal CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The power-law divergence of the magnetic Grünesien ratio reveals that, surprisingly, this compound is quantum critical without tuning. The dynamical energy over temperature scaling in the neutron response, seen throughout the Brillouin zone, as well as the temperature dependence of the static uniform susceptibility indicate that temperature is the only energy scale in the criticality. Such behavior, which has been associated with Kondo destruction quantum criticality in metallic systems, may well be generic in the semimetal setting.

Topological nature of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ and its sensitiveness to Sm vacancy

The true topological nature of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ remains to be unveiled. Our previous tunneling study not only found evidence for the existence of surface Dirac fermions, but it also uncovered that they inherently interact with the spin excitons, collective excitations in the bulk. We have extended such a spectroscopic investigation into crystals containing a Sm deficiency. The bulk hybridization gap is found to be insensitive to the deficiency up to 1% studied here, but the surface states in Sm-deficient crystals exhibit quite different temperature evolutions from those in stoichiometric ones. We attribute this to the topological surface states remaining incoherent down to the lowest measurement temperature due to their continued interaction with the spin excitons that remain uncondensed. This result shows that the detailed topological nature of SmB$_6$ could vary drastically in the presence of disorder in the lattice. This sensitiveness to disorder is seemingly contradictory to the celebrated topological protection, but it can be understood as being due to the intimate interplay between strong correlations and topological effects.

Magnetic impurities in Kondo insulators: An application to samarium hexaboride

Impurities and defects in Kondo insulators can have an unusual impact on dynamics that blends with effects of intrinsic electron correlations. Such crystal imperfections are difficult to avoid, and their consequences are incompletely understood. Here we study magnetic impurities in Kondo insulators via perturbation theory of the s-d Kondo impurity model adapted to small bandgap insulators. The calculated magnetization and specific heat agree with recent thermodynamic measurements in samarium hexaboride (SmB$_6$). This qualitative agreement supports the physical picture of multi-channel Kondo screening of local moments by electrons and holes involving both intrinsic and impurity bands. Specific heat is thermally activated in zero field by Kondo screening through sub-gap impurity bands and exhibits a characteristic upturn as the temperature is decreased. In contrast, magnetization obtains a dominant quantum correction from partial screening by virtual particle-hole pairs in intrinsic bands. We point out that magnetic impurities could impact de Haas-van Alphen quantum oscillations in SmB$_6$, through the effects of Landau quantization in intrinsic bands on the Kondo screening of impurity moments.

Intrinsic Low-Temperature Magnetism in SmB6

By means of new muon spin relaxation experiments, we disentangle extrinsic and intrinsic sources of low-temperature bulk magnetism in the candidate topological Kondo insulator (TKI) SmB6. Results on Al-flux grown SmB6 single crystals are compared to those on a large floating-zone grown ^{154}Sm^{11}B6 single crystal in which a 14 meV bulk spin exciton has been detected by inelastic neutron scattering. Below ~ 10 K we detect the gradual development of quasi-static magnetism due to rare-earth impurities and Sm vacancies. Our measurements also reveal two additional forms of intrinsic magnetism: 1) underlying low-energy (~ 100 neV) weak magnetic moment (~ 10^{-2} mu_B) fluctuations similar to those detected in the related candidate TKI YbB12 that persist down to millikelvin temperatures, and 2) magnetic fluctuations consistent with a 2.6 meV bulk magnetic excitation at zero magnetic field that appears to hinder surface conductivity above ~ 4.5 K. We discuss potential origins of the magnetism.

Crystal structure of the unconventional spin-triplet superconductor UTe2 at low temperature by single crystal neutron diffraction

The crystal structure of the new superconductor UTe2 has been investigated for the first time at low temperature (LT) of 2.7 K, just closely above the superconducting transition temperature of about 1.7 K by single crystal neutron diffraction, in order to prove, whether the orthorhombic structure of type Immm (Nr. 71 Int. Tabl.) reported for room temperature (RT) persists down to the superconducting phase and can be considered as a parent symmetry for the development of spin triplet superconductivity. Our results show that the RT structure reported previously obtained by single crystal X-Ray diffraction indeed describes also the LT neutron diffraction data with high precision. No structural change from RT down to 2.7 K is observed. Detailed structural parameters for UTe2 at LT are reported.

Field-dependent heat transport in the Kondo insulator SmB6 : phonons scattered by magnetic impurities

The thermal conductivity $κ$ of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ was measured at low temperature, down to 70 mK, in magnetic fields up to 15 T, on single crystals grown using both the floating-zone and the flux methods. The residual linear term $κ_0/T$ at $T \to 0$ is found to be zero in all samples, for all magnetic fields, in agreement with previous studies. There is therefore no clear evidence of fermionic heat carriers. In contrast to some prior data, we observe a large enhancement of $κ(T)$ with increasing field. The effect of field is anisotropic, depending on the relative orientation of field and heat current (parallel or perpendicular), and with respect to the cubic crystal structure. We interpret our data in terms of heat transport predominantly by phonons, which are scattered by magnetic impurities.

Diamagnetic Sm$^{3+}$ in the topological Kondo insulator SmB$_6$

Samarium hexaboride is a topological Kondo insulator, with metallic surface states manifesting from its insulating band structure. Since the insulating bulk itself is driven by strong correlations, both the bulk and surface host compelling magnetic and electronic phenomena. We employed X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Sm M$_{4,5}$ edges to measure surface and bulk magnetic properties of Sm$^{2+}$ and Sm$^{3+}$ within SmB$_6$. We observed anti-alignment to the applied field of the Sm$^{3+}$ magnetic dipole moment below $T = 75$ K and of the total orbital moment of samarium below 30 K. The induced Sm$^{3+}$ moment at the cleaved surface at 8 K and 6 T implies 1.5% of the total Sm as magnetized Sm$^{3+}$. The field dependence of the Sm$^{3+}$ XMCD dichorism at 8 K is diamagnetic and approximately linear. The bulk magnetization at 2 K is however driven by Sm$^{2+}$ Van Vleck susceptibility as well as 1% paramagnetic impurities with $μ_{\rm Eff} = 5.2(1)~μ_{\rm B}$. This indicates diamagnetic Sm$^{3+}$ is compensated within the bulk. The XAS and XMCD spectra are weakly affected by Sm vacancies and carbon doping while XAS is strongly affected by polishing.

Dynamical structure factor of triangular-lattice antiferromagnet

We elucidate the role of magnon interaction and spontaneous decays in the spin dynamics of the triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet by calculating its dynamical structure factor within the spin-wave theory. Explicit theoretical results for neutron-scattering intensity are provided for spins S=1/2 and S=3/2. The dynamical structure factor exhibits unconventional features such as quasiparticle peaks broadened by decays, non-Lorentzian lineshapes, and significant spectral weight redistribution to the two-magnon continuum. This rich excitation spectrum illustrates the complexity of the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet and provides distinctive qualitative and quantitative fingerprints for experimental observation of decay-induced magnon dynamics.

Interaction Driven Subgap Spin Exciton in the Kondo Insulator SmB6

Using inelastic neutron scattering, we map a 14 meV coherent resonant mode in the topological Kondo insulator SmB6 and describe its relation to the low energy insulating band structure. The resonant intensity is confined to the X and R high symmetry points, repeating outside the first Brillouin zone and dispersing less than 2 meV, with a 5d-like magnetic form factor. We present a slave-boson treatment of the Anderson Hamiltonian with a third neighbor dominated hybridized band structure. This approach produces a spin exciton below the charge gap with features that are consistent with the observed neutron scattering. We find that maxima in the wave vector dependence of the inelastic neutron scattering indicate band inversion.

In-gap collective mode spectrum of the Topological Kondo Insulator SmB6

Samarium hexaboride (SmB$_6$) is the first strongly correlated material with a recognized non-trivial band-structure topology. Its electron correlations are seen by inelastic neutron scattering as a coherent collective excitation at the energy of 14 meV. Here we calculate the spectrum of this mode using a perturbative slave boson method. Our starting point is the recently constructed Anderson model that properly captures the band-structure topology of SmB$_6$. Most self-consistent renormalization effects are captured by a few phenomenological parameters whose values are fitted to match the calculated and experimentally measured mode spectrum in the first Brillouin zone. A simple band-structure of low-energy quasiparticles in SmB$_6$ is also modeled through this fitting procedure, because the important renormalization effects due to Coulomb interactions are hard to calculate by ab-initio methods. Despite involving uncontrolled approximations, the slave boson calculation is capable of producing a fairly good quantitative match of the energy spectrum, and a qualitative match of the spectral weight throughout the first Brillouin zone. We find that the "fitted" band-structure required for this match indeed puts SmB$_6$ in the class of strong topological insulators. Our analysis thus provides a detailed physical picture of how the SmB$_6$ band topology arises from strong electron interactions, and paints the collective mode as magnetically active exciton.

Molecular Quantum Magnetism in LiZn2Mo3O8

Inelastic neutron scattering for temperatures below 30 K from a powder of LiZn2Mo3O8 demonstrates this triangular-lattice antiferromagnet hosts collective magnetic excitations from spin 1/2 Mo3O13 molecules. Apparently gapless (Δ< 0.2 meV) and extending at least up to 2.5 meV, the low energy magnetic scattering cross section is surprisingly broad in momentum space and involves one third of the spins present above 100 K. The data are compatible with the presence of valence-bonds involving nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor spins forming a disordered or dynamic state.

Dynamical structure factor of quasi-2D antiferromagnet in high fields

We study high-field magnon dynamics and examine the dynamical structure factor in the quasi-2D tetragonal Heisenberg antiferromagnet with interlayer coupling corresponding to realistic materials. Within spin-wave theory, we show that a non-zero interlayer coupling mitigates singular corrections to the excitation spectrum occurring in the high-field regime that would otherwise require a self-consistent approach beyond the 1/S approximation. For the fields between the threshold for decays and saturation field we observe widening of the two-magnon sidebands with significant shifting of the spectral weight away from the quasiparticle peak. We find spectrum broadening throughout large regions of the Brillouin zone, dramatic redistributions of spectral weight to the two-magnon continuum, two-peak structures and other features clearly unlike conventional single-particle peaks.
