Quantum reservoir computing with classical and nonclassical states in an integrated optical circuit

Quantum reservoir computing (QRC) is a hardware-implementation-friendly quantum neural network scheme with minimal physical system requirements and a proven advantage over classical counterparts. We use an extension of the positive-P phase space method to efficiently simulate a bosonic, linear silicon-chip based QRC system excited with a single nonclassical state, a "kitten" state. In combination with input-encoding coherent states, our method allows to obtain exact results for all correlation functions without Hilbert space cutoff. Surprisingly, we find that such a setting - where the only "quantumness'' derives from a single input mode, is sufficient to obtain significant (over 9-fold) reduction of classification error over the classical counterpart. Our work provides a promising direction toward efficient quantum computation with accessible optical hardware.

A Photonic Tautochrone

We propose to implement an optical analogue of the tautochrone property of the cycloid to allow the focusing of ultrashort pulses inside photonic systems. This allows to enhance nonlinear effects, resulting in orders of magnitude increase of nonlinearity-induced phase shifts, while employing low irradiances. Building upon the optical-mechanical analogy, we show how to produce optical limiters for temporal light pulses, and how to implement temporal bistability and even multistability with large numbers of states. Finally, we move this concept to the quantum realm and predict a tautochrone quantum blockade regime with a stronger antibunching.

Giant Enhancement of Unconventional Photon Blockade in a Dimer Chain

Unconventional photon blockade refers to the suppression of multi-photon states in weakly nonlinear optical resonators via the destructive interference of different excitation pathways. It has been studied in a pair of coupled nonlinear resonators and other few-mode systems. Here, we show that unconventional photon blockade can be greatly enhanced in a chain of coupled resonators. Specifically, the strength of the nonlinearity in each resonator needed to achieve unconventional photon blockade is suppressed exponentially with lattice size. The analytic derivation, based on a weak drive approximation, is validated by wavefunction Monte Carlo simulations. These findings show that customized lattices of coupled resonators can be powerful tools for controlling multi-photon quantum states.
