Correlation measurements with on-off detectors

We present a general method to detect nonclassical radiation fields with systems of on-off detectors. We especially study higher order correlations for the identification of nonclassical radiation. This allows us to directly characterize quantum correlations by the statistics measured with systems of on-off detectors. Additionally, we generalize our method to multiple detector systems for measurements of correlations between light fields. We also consider multi-mode radiation fields and isolate nonclassicality in terms of the space time correlations. Finally, we present results for the quantum statistics using on-off detectors operating in nonlinear detection modes.

Multipartite entangled light from driven microcavities

The generation and the characterization of multipartite entangled light is an important and challenging task in quantum optics. In this paper the entanglement properties of the light emitted from a planar semiconductor microcavity are studied. The intracavity scattering dynamics leads to the emission of light that is described by a fourpartite W state. Its multipartite correlations are identified by using the method of entanglement witnesses. Entanglement conditions are derived, which are based on a general witness constructed from W states. The results can be used to detect entanglement of light that propagates through lossy and even turbulent media.

Multipartite Entanglement Witnesses

We derive a set of algebraic equations, the so-called multipartite separability eigenvalue equations. Based on their solutions, we introduce a universal method for the construction of multipartite entanglement witnesses. We witness multipartite entanglement of $10^3$ coupled quantum oscillators, by solving our basic equations analytically. This clearly demonstrates the feasibility of our method for studying ultra-high orders of multipartite entanglement in complex quantum systems.

Optimal Squeezing in the Resonance Fluorescence of Single Photon Emitters

Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Volume 51, page 511e studied for coherently driven single photon sources, such as atoms and quantum dots. Maximal squeezing is realized, if the electronic subsystem of the emitter is in a pure quantum state. The purification is achieved by using a cavity as a second decay channel, besides the incoherent coupling to the electromagnetic vacuum. For realistic cavities this yields a purity of the electronic state of more than 99%. Aside from numerical calculations, we also derive approximate analytical results. Based on the approximations, effects are studied which originate from the environment of the emitter, including radiationless dephasing and incoherent pumping of the emitter and the cavity mode. The fragility of squeezing against decoherence is substantially reduced, so that squeezing persists even under hostile conditions. The measurement of squeezing from such light sources is also considered.

Bipartite bound entanglement in continuous variables through deGaussification

We introduce a class of bipartite entangled continuous variable states that are positive under partial transposition operation, i.e., PPT bound entangled. These states are based on realistic preparation procedures in optical systems, being thus a feasible option to generate and observe genuinely bipartite bound entanglement in high precision experiments. One fundamental step in our scheme is to perform a non-Gaussian operation over a single-mode Gaussian state; this deGaussification procedure is achieved through a modified single-photon addition, which is a procedure that has currently being investigated in diverse optical setups. Although dependent on a single-photon detection in a idler channel, the preparation can be made unconditional after a calibration of the apparatus. The detection and proof of bound entanglement is made by means of the Range Criterion, theory of Hankel operators and Gerschgorin Disk s perturbation theorems.

Quasiprobabilities for Multipartite Quantum Correlations of Light

Regular quasiprobabilities are introduced for the aim of characterizing quantum correlations of multimode radiation fields. Negativities of these quantum-correlation quasiprobabilities are necessary and sufficient for any quantum correlation encoded in the multimode Glauber-Sudarshan P function. The strength of the method is demonstrated for a two-mode phase randomized squeezed-vacuum state. It has no entanglement, no quantum discord, a positive Wigner function, and a classical reduced single-mode representation. Our method clearly visualizes the quantum correlations of this state.

Quantification of Nonclassicality

To quantify single mode nonclassicality, we start from an operational approach. A positive semi-definite observable is introduced to describe a measurement setup. The quantification is based on the negativity of the normally ordered version of this observable. Perfect operational quantumness corresponds to the quantum-noise-free measurement of the chosen observable. Surprisingly, even moderately squeezed states may exhibit perfect quantumness for a properly designed measurement. The quantification is also considered from an axiomatic viewpoint, based on the algebraic structure of the quantum states and the quantum superposition principle. Basic conclusions from both approaches are consistent with this fundamental principle of the quantum world.

Strongly entangled light from planar microcavities

The emission of entangled light from planar semiconductor microcavities is studied and the entanglement properties are analyzed and quantified. Phase-matching of the intra-cavity scattering dynamics for multiple pump beams or pulses, together with the coupling to external radiation, leads to the emission of a manifold of entangled photon pairs. A decomposition of the emitted photons into two parties leads to a strong entanglement of the resulting bipartite system. For the quantification of the entanglement, the Schmidt number of the system is determined by the construction of Schmidt number witnesses. It is analyzed to which extend the resources of the originally strongly entangled light field are diminished by dephasing in propagation channels.

Atomic nonclassicality quasiprobabilities

Although nonclassical quantum states are important both conceptually and as a resource for quantum technology, it is often difficult to test whether a given quantum system displays nonclassicality. A simple method to certify nonclassicality is introduced, based on easily accessible collective atomic quadrature measurements, without the need of full state tomography. The statistics is analyzed beyond the ground-state noise level, by direct sampling of a regularized atomic quadrature quasiprobability. Nonclassicality of a squeezed ensemble of 2x10^5 Cesium atoms is demonstrated, with a significance of up to 23 standard deviations.

Complete nonclassicality test with a photon-number resolving detector

We present a method for the experimental measurement of nonclassicality witnesses and demonstrate its application. Our proposal only requires the coherent displacement of the initial state, which can be achieved by overlapping the latter with a coherent state at a beam splitter, and subsequent photon-number resolved detection. This setup allows a complete test of nonclassicality of an arbitrary quantum state. The role of the quantum efficiency as well as statistical and systematic uncertainties are discussed. Finally, the scheme is demonstrated for a realistic example.

Optimal Squeezing in Resonance Fluorescence via Atomic-State Purification

Squeezing of atomic resonance fluorescence is shown to be optimized by a properly designed environment, which can be realized by a quasi-resonant cavity. Optimal squeezing is achieved if the atomic coherence is maximized, corresponding to a pure atomic quantum state. The atomic-state purification is achieved by the backaction of the cavity field on the atom, which increases the atomic coherence and decreases the atomic excitation. For realistic cavities, the coupling of the atom to the cavity field yields a purity of the atomic state of more than 99%. The fragility of squeezing against dephasing is substantially reduced in this scenario, which may be important for various applications.

Universal nonclassicality witnesses for harmonic oscillators

It is shown that a nonclassicality witness, whose expectation value can be measured for all quantum states, can be constructed from every nonclassicality filter. This finding leads to a set of universal witnesses, parameterized by only three real numbers, for the detection of nonclassicality of any quantum state of a harmonic oscillator. An explicit operator expression is given for such a universal witness. The application of the witnesses is demonstrated for a nontrivial example, and its experimental measurement is briefly considered.

Homodyne detection for atmosphere channels

We give a systematic theoretical description of homodyne detection in the case where both the signal and the local oscillator pass through the turbulent atmosphere. Imperfect knowledge of the local-oscillator amplitude is effectively included in a noisy density operator, leading to postprocessing noise. Alternatively, we propose a technique with monitored transmission coefficient of the atmosphere, which is free of postprocessing noise.

Toward Global Quantum Communication: Beam Wandering Preserves Nonclassicality

Tap-proof long-distance quantum communication requires a deep understanding of the strong losses in transmission channels. Here we provide a rigorous treatment of the effects of beam wandering, one of the leading disturbances in atmospheric channels, on the quantum properties of light. From first principles we derive the probability distribution of the beam transmissivity, with the aim to completely characterize the quantum state of light. It turns out that beam wandering may preserve nonclassical effects, such as entanglement, quadrature and photon number squeezing, much better than a standard attenuating channel of the same losses.

Entanglement quasiprobabilities of squeezed light

We demonstrate the feasibility to completely characterize entanglement by negativities of quasiprobabilities. This requires the complete solution of a sophisticated mathematical problem, the so-called separability eigenvalue problem. Its solution is obtained for a non-Gaussian continuous variable quantum state, a two-mode squeezed state undergoing dephasing. This is a standard scenario for experiments with quantum-correlated radiation fields.

Sub-binomial light

The click statistics from on-off detector systems is quite different from the counting statistics of the more traditional detectors. This necessitates introduction of new parameters to characterize the nonclassicality of fields from measurements using on-off detectors. To properly replace the Mandel Q_M parameter, we introduce a parameter Q_B. A negative value represents a sub-binomial statistics. This is possible only for quantum fields, even for super-Poisson light. It eliminates the problems encountered in discerning nonclassicality using Mandel's Q_M for on-off data.

Fake violations of the quantum Bell-parameter bound

Shortcomings of experimental techniques are usually assumed to diminish nonclassical properties of quantum systems. Here it is demonstrated that this standard assumption is not true in general. It is theoretically shown that the inability to resolve different photon numbers in photodetection may pseudo-increase a measured Bell parameter. Under proper conditions one even pseudo-violates the quantum Cirel'son bound of the Bell parameter, the corresponding density operator fails to be positive semi-definite. This paradox can be resolved by appropriate squash models.

Entanglement transfer through the turbulent atmosphere

The propagation of polarization-entangled states of light through fluctuating loss channels in the turbulent atmosphere is studied, including the situation of strong losses. We consider violations of Bell inequalities by light, emitted by a parametric down-conversion source, after transmission through the turbulent atmosphere. It is shown by analytical calculations, that in the presence of background radiation and dark counts, fluctuating loss channels may preserve entanglement properties of light even better than standard loss channels, when postselected measurements are applied.
