Physics with Radioactive Ion Beams at the Nuclear Science Laboratory

The University of Notre Dame is home to a rich history of nuclear science efforts, including some of the earliest developments in the production and creation of radioactive ion beams (RIBs). The resulting TwinSol facility stands as the longest continuously-operating RIB facility in the United States, and has enabled a wide range of experimental efforts in nuclear structure, astrophysics and fundamental symmetries through in-flight RIBs one to two nucleons from stability. A recent upgrade to TwinSol via a third solenoid constituted the founding of the TriSol facility, which provides cleaner, better-focused RIBs to downstream experiments. In this paper, we present a summary of RIB science at the Nuclear Science Laboratory (NSL) with both TwinSol and TriSol and discuss recent upgrades and future experimental plans at the facilities.

Neutron dynamics in the fusion of neutron-rich O ions with $^{12}$C

The fusion excitation function for $^{21}$O + $^{12}$C was measured for the first time and compared to the fusion of less neutron-rich isotopes. The impact of valence neutrons in the d$_{5/2}$ shell on the fusion excitation function is examined. The experimental data manifest a clear dependence of the extracted barrier height, V$_B$, and barrier position, R$_B$ on neutron excess. To assess the role of dynamics the experimental data are compared with both density constrained frozen Hartree Fock (DCFHF) and density constrained time-dependent Hartree Fock (DCTDHF) theories.

Obtaining high resolution excitation functions with an active thick-target approach and validating them with mirror nuclei

Measurement of fusion excitation functions for stable nuclei has largely been restricted to nuclei with significant natural abundance. Typically, to investigate neighboring nuclei with low natural abundance has required obtaining isotopically enriched material. This restriction often limits the ability to perform such measurements. We report the measurement of a high quality fusion excitation function for a $^{17}$O beam produced from unenriched material with 0.038\% natural abundance. The measurement is enabled by using an active thick-target approach and the accuracy of the result is validated using its mirror nucleus $^{17}$F and resonances. The result provides important information about the average fusion cross-section for the oxygen isotopic chain as a function of neutron excess.

A novel approach for extracting model-independent nuclear level densities far from stability

The level density of quantum states in statistical mesoscopic systems is a critical input for various fields of physics, including nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics, atomic physics and their applications. In atomic nuclei, the level density is a fundamental measure of their complex structure at relatively high energies. Here we present the first model-independent measurement of the absolute partial nuclear level density for a short-lived unstable nucleus. For this purpose, we introduce the ``Shape method'' to extract the shape of the $γ$-ray strength function. Combining the Shape method with the existing $β$-Oslo technique allows the extraction of the nuclear level density without the need for theoretical input. We benchmark the Shape method using results for the stable $^{76}$Ge nucleus, finding an excellent agreement to previous experimental results. We apply the Shape method to new experimental data on the short-lived $^{88}$Kr nucleus. Our method opens the door for measurements of the nuclear level density and $γ$-ray strength function far away from stability, a pivotal input required to understand the role of exotic nuclei in forming the cosmos.
