MASCOT -- An ESO-ARO legacy survey of molecular gas in nearby SDSS-MaNGA galaxies: I. first data release, and global and resolved relations between H_2 and stellar content

We present the first data release of the MaNGA-ARO Survey of CO Targets (MASCOT), an ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey conducted at the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO). We measure the CO(1-0) line emission in a sample of 187 nearby galaxies selected from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey that has obtained integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy for a sample of ~ 10,000 galaxies at low redshift. The main goal of MASCOT is to probe the molecular gas content of star-forming galaxies with stellar masses > 10^9.5 M_solar and with associated MaNGA IFU observations and well-constrained quantities like stellar masses, star formation rates and metallicities. In this paper we present the first results of the MASCOT survey, providing integrated CO(1-0) measurements that cover several effective radii of the galaxy and present CO luminosities, CO kinematics, and estimated H2 gas masses. We observe that the decline of galaxy star formation rate with respect to the star formation main sequence (SFMS) increases with the decrease of molecular gas and with a reduced star formation efficiency, in agreement with results of other integrated studies. Relating the molecular gas mass fractions with the slope of the stellar age gradients inferred from the MaNGA observations, we find that galaxies with lower molecular gas mass fractions tend to show older stellar populations close to the galactic center, while the opposite is true for galaxies with higher molecular gas mass fractions, providing tentative evidence for inside-out quenching.

Antiferromagnetic multi-level memristor using linear magnetoelectricity

The explosive growth of artificial intelligence and data-intensive computing has brought crucial challenge to modern information science and technology, i.e. conceptually new devices with superior properties are urgently desired. Memristor is recognized as a very promising circuit element to tackle the barriers, because of its fascinating advantages in imitating neural network of human brain, and thus realizing in-memory computing. However, there exist two core and fundamental issues: energy efficiency and accuracy, owing to the electric current operation of traditional memristors. In the present work, we demonstrate a new type of memristor, i.e. charge q and magnetic flux ϕ space memristor, enabled by linear magnetoelectricity of Co4Nb2O9. The memory states show distinctly linear magnetoelectric coefficients with a large ratio of about 10, ensuing exceptional accuracy of related devices. The present q-ϕ type memristor can be manipulated by magnetic and electric fields without involving electric current, paving the way to develop ultralow-energy-consuming devices. In the meanwhile, it is worth to mention that Co4Nb2O9 hosts an intrinsic compensated antiferromagnetic structure, which suggests interesting possibility of further integrating the unique merits of antiferromagnetic spintronics such as ultrahigh density and ultrafast switching. Linear magnetoelectricity is proposed to essential to the q-ϕ type memristor, which would be accessible in a broad class of multiferroics and other magnetoelectric materials such as topological insulators. Our findings could therefore advance memristors towards new levels of functionality.

Topic Scene Graph Generation by Attention Distillation from Caption

If an image tells a story, the image caption is the briefest narrator. Generally, a scene graph prefers to be an omniscient generalist, while the image caption is more willing to be a specialist, which outlines the gist. Lots of previous studies have found that a scene graph is not as practical as expected unless it can reduce the trivial contents and noises. In this respect, the image caption is a good tutor. To this end, we let the scene graph borrow the ability from the image caption so that it can be a specialist on the basis of remaining all-around, resulting in the so-called Topic Scene Graph. What an image caption pays attention to is distilled and passed to the scene graph for estimating the importance of partial objects, relationships, and events. Specifically, during the caption generation, the attention about individual objects in each time step is collected, pooled, and assembled to obtain the attention about relationships, which serves as weak supervision for regularizing the estimated importance scores of relationships. In addition, as this attention distillation process provides an opportunity for combining the generation of image caption and scene graph together, we further transform the scene graph into linguistic form with rich and free-form expressions by sharing a single generation model with image caption. Experiments show that attention distillation brings significant improvements in mining important relationships without strong supervision, and the topic scene graph shows great potential in subsequent applications.

Relation of cyclotron resonant energy and luminosity in a strongly magnetized neutron star GRO J1008-57 observed by Insight-HXMT

Cyclotron line scattering features are detected in a few tens of X-ray pulsars (XRPs) and used as direct indicators of a strong magnetic field at the surface of accreting neutron stars (NSs). In a few cases, cyclotron lines are known to be variable with accretion luminosity of XRPs. It is accepted that the observed variations of cyclotron line scattering features are related to variations of geometry and dynamics of accretion flow above the magnetic poles of a NS. A positive correlation between the line centroid energy and luminosity is typical for sub-critical XRPs, where the accretion results in hot spots at the magnetic poles. The negative correlation was proposed to be a specific feature of bright super-critical XRPs, where radiation pressure supports accretion columns above the stellar surface. Cyclotron line in spectra of Be-transient X-ray pulsar GRO J1008-57 is detected at energies from $\sim 75 -90$ keV, the highest observed energy of cyclotron line feature in XRPs. We report the peculiar relation of cyclotron line centroid energies with luminosity in GRO J1008-57 during the Type II outburst in August 2017 observed by Insight-HXMT. The cyclotron line energy was detected to be negatively correlated with the luminosity at $3.2\times 10^{37}\,\ergs<L<4.2\times 10^{37}\,\ergs$, and positively correlated at $L\gtrsim 5\times 10^{37}\,\ergs$. We speculate that the observed peculiar behavior of a cyclotron line would be due to variations of accretion channel geometry.

Timing and spectral variability of high mass X-ray pulsar GX 301--2 over orbital phases observed by Insight-HXMT

We report the orbital X-ray variability of high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) GX301--2. GX301--2 undergone a spin up process in 2018--2020 with the period evolving from $\sim$ 685 s to 670 s. The energy resolved pulse-profiles of the pulsar in 1--60 keV varied from single peaked and sinusoidal shapes to multi-peaked across different orbital phases. Pulse fractions evolving over orbit had negative correlations with the X-ray flux. The broad-band X-ray energy spectrum of the pulsar can be described with a partial covering negative positive cutoff power-law continuum model. Near the periastron passage of the pulsar we found a strong variation in the additional column density ($NH_{2}$), which correlated with variation of the flux. Curves of growth for both Fe K$α$ and Fe K$β$ lines were plotted to investigate the distribution of matter around neutron star. We have also found the evidence of two cyclotron absorption lines in the phase-averaged spectra in GX301--2, with one line of 30--42 keV and the other line varying in 48--56 keV. Both two line's centroid energies show the similar relationship with X-ray luminosity: positive correlation in lower luminosity range, and negative relation above a critical luminosity of $10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We estimated the surface magnetic field of the neutron star in GX301--2 at ~$(0.5-2)\times 10^{13}$ G. Two cyclotron line energies have a nearly fixed ratio of ~1.63 while having a low strength ratio (~0.05), suggesting that these two features may actually be one line.

Non-thermal electron energization during the impulsive phase of an X9.3 flare revealed by Insight-HXMT

The X9.3 flare SOL20170906T11:55 was observed by the CsI detector aboard the first Chinese X-ray observatory Hard X-ray Modulation telescope (Insight-HXMT). By using wavelets method, we report about 22 s quasiperiodic pulsations(QPPs) during the impulsive phase. And the spectra from 100 keV to 800 keV showed the evolution with the gamma-ray flux, of a power-law photon index from $\sim 1.8$ before the peak, $\sim 2.0$ around the flare peak, to $\sim 1.8$ again. The gyrosynchrotron microwave spectral analysis reveals a $36.6 \pm 0.6 \arcsec$ radius gyrosynchrotron source with mean transverse magnetic field around 608.2 Gauss, and the penetrated $\ge$ 10 keV non-thermal electron density is about $10^{6.7} \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$ at peak time. The magnetic field strength followed the evolution of high-frequency radio flux. Further gyrosynchrotron source modeling analysis implies that there exists a quite steady gyrosynchrotron source, the non-thermal electron density and transverse magnetic field evolution are similar to higher-frequency light curves. The temporally spectral analysis reveals that those non-thermal electrons are accelerated by repeated magnetic reconnection, likely from a lower corona source.

Chiral charge density waves induced by Ti-doping in 1T-TaS2

We investigate the Ti-doping effect on the charge density wave (CDW) of 1T-TaS2 by combining scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements and first-principle calculations. Although the Ti-doping induced phase evolution seems regular with increasing of the doping concentration (x), an unexpected chiral CDW phase is observed in the sample with x = 0.08, in which Ti atoms almost fully occupy the central Ta atoms in the CDW clusters. The emergence of the chiral CDW is proposed to be from the doping-enhanced orbital order. Only when x = 0.08, the possible long-range orbital order can trigger the chiral CDW phase. Compared with other 3d-elements doped 1T-TaS2, the Ti-doping retains the electronic flat band and the corresponding CDW phase, which is a prerequisite for the emergence of chirality. We expect that introducing elements with a strong orbital character may induce a chiral charge order in a broad class of CDW systems. The present results open up another avenue for further exploring the chiral CDW materials.

Studying magnetic fields of ultraluminous X-ray pulsars using different accretion torques

The magnetic field of ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) pulsars is the key parameter to understand the nature and accretion physics. However, the typical magnetic field values in these ULX pulsars are still under debate. We used six different torque models to study the magnetic fields of ULX pulsars, to see how derived magnetic fields change with different models, and to determine which models are more suitable for ULX pulsars. We took the currently available period, period derivative, and flux data of 7 confirmed ULX pulsars, M82 X-2, ULX NGC 7793 P13, ULX NGC 5907, NGC 300 ULX1, NGC 1313 X-2, M51 ULX-7, Swift J0243.6+6124, plus one potential ULX pulsars, SMC X-3. The magnetic fields of these ULX pulsars were constrained from two physical conditions: the spin-up process and near equilibrium. We checked possible dependence of the magnetic field estimations on the different torque models. The calculations suggest the accretion torque models by Ghosh & Lamb [1], Wang [2], Kluzniak & Rappaport [3] and Campbell [4] are more likely to support magnetar models for ULX pulsars, while Lovelace, Romanova & Bisnovatyi-Kogan [5]'s model generally predicts the magnetic field in normal neutron stars. Implications of our results combined with other independent methods are also discussed, which will help us to understand the nature and rotational behavior of these ULX pulsars.

Low background measurement in CANDLES-III for studying the neutrino-less double beta decay of $^{48}$Ca

We developed a CANDLES-III system to study the neutrino-less double beta (0$νββ$) decay of $^{48}$Ca. The proposed system employs 96 CaF$_{2}$ scintillation crystals (305 kg) with natural Ca ($^{\rm nat.}$Ca) isotope which corresponds 350\,g of $^{48}$Ca. External backgrounds were rejected using a 4$π$ active shield of a liquid scintillator surrounding the CaF$_2$ crystals. The internal backgrounds caused by the radioactive impurities within the CaF$_2$ crystals can be reduced effectively through analysis of the signal pulse shape. We analyzed the data obtained in the Kamioka underground for a live-time of 130.4\,days to evaluate the feasibility of the low background measurement with the CANDLES-III detector. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we estimated the background rate from the radioactive impurities in the CaF$_{2}$ crystals and the rate of high energy $γ$-rays caused by the (n, $γ$) reactions induced by environmental neutrons. The expected background rate was in a good agreement with the measured rate, i.e., approximately 10$^{-3}$ events/keV/yr/(kg of $^{\rm nat.}$Ca), in the 0$νββ$ window. In conclusion, the background candidates were estimated properly by comparing the measured energy spectrum with the background simulations. With this measurement method, we performed the first search for 0$νββ$ decay in a low background condition using a detector with a Ca isotope, in which the Ca present was not enriched, in a scale of hundreds of kg. The $^{48}$Ca isotope has a high potential for use in 0$νββ$ decay search, and is expected to be useful for the development of a next-generation detector for highly sensitive measurements.

Quantum-enhanced radiometry via approximate quantum error correction

By exploiting the exotic quantum states of a probe, it is possible to realize efficient sensors that are attractive for practical metrology applications and fundamental studies. Similar to other quantum technologies, quantum sensing is suffering from noises and thus the experimental developments are hindered. Although theoretical schemes based on quantum error correction (QEC) have been proposed to combat noises, their demonstrations are prevented by the stringent experimental requirements, such as perfect quantum operations and the orthogonal condition between the sensing interaction Hamiltonian and the noise Lindbladians. Here, we report an experimental demonstration of a quantum enhancement in sensing with a bosonic probe with different encodings, by exploring the large Hilbert space of the bosonic mode and developing both the approximate QEC and the quantum jump tracking approaches. In a practical radiometry scenario, we attain a 5.3 dB enhancement of sensitivity, which reaches $9.1\times10^{-4}\,\mathrm{Hz}^{-1/2}$ when measuring the excitation population of a receiver mode. Our results demonstrate the potential of quantum sensing with near-term quantum technologies, not only shedding new light on the quantum advantage of sensing by revealing its difference from other quantum applications, but also stimulating further efforts on bosonic quantum technologies.

Accretion Torque Reversals in GRO J1008-57 Revealed by Insight-HXMT

GRO J1008-57, as a Be/X-ray transient pulsar, is considered to have the highest magnetic field in known neutron star X-ray binary systems. Observational data of the X-ray outbursts in GRO J1008-57 from 2017 to 2020 were collected by the Insight-HXMT satellite. In this work, the spin period of the neutron star in GRO J1008-57 was determined to be about 93.28 seconds in August 2017, 93.22 seconds in February 2018, 93.25 seconds in June 2019 and 93.14 seconds in June 2020. GRO J1008-57 evolved in the spin-up process with a mean rate of $-(2.10\pm 0.05)\times$10$^{-4}$ s/d from 2009 -- 2018, and turned into a spin down process with a rate of $(6.7\pm 0.6)\times$10$^{-5}$ s/d from Feb 2018 to June 2019. During the type II outburst of 2020, GRO J1008-57 had the spin-up torque again. During the torque reversals, the pulse profiles and continuum X-ray spectra did not change significantly, and the cyclotron resonant scattering feature around 80 keV was only detected during the outbursts in 2017 and 2020. Based on the observed mean spin-up rate, we estimated the inner accretion disk radius in GRO J1008-57 (about 1 - 2 times of the Alfvén radius) by comparing different accretion torque models of magnetic neutron stars. During the spin-down process, the magnetic torque should dominate over the matter accreting inflow torque, and we constrained the surface dipole magnetic field $B\geq 6\times 10^{12}$ G for the neutron star in GRO J1008-57, which is consistent with the magnetic field strength obtained by cyclotron line centroid energy.

Comptonization as an origin of the continuum in Intermediate Polars

In this paper we test if the $\sim$ 0.3 - 15 keV XMM-Newton EPIC pn spectral continuum of IPs can be described by the thermal Comptonization compTT model. We used publicly observations of 12 IPs (AE Aqr, EX Hya, V1025 Cen, V2731 Oph, RX J2133.7+5107, PQ Gem, NY Lup, V2400 Oph, IGR J00234+6141, IGR J17195-4100, V1223 Sgr, and XY Ari). We find that our modeling is capable to fit well the average spectral continuum of these sources. In this framework, UV/soft X-ray seed photons (with $ $ of 0.096 $\pm$ 0.013 keV) coming presumably from the star surface are scattered off by electrons present in an optically thick plasma (with $ $ of 3.05 $\pm$ 0.16 keV and optical depth $<τ>$ of 9.5 $\pm$ 0.6 for plane geometry) located nearby (on top) to the more central seed photon emission regions. A soft blackbody (bbody) component is observed in 5 out of the 13 observations analysed, with a mean temperature $ $ of $0.095 \pm 0.004$ keV. We observed that the spectra of IPs show in general two photon indices $Γ$, which are driven by the source luminosity and optical depth. Low luminosity IPs show $<Γ>$ of $1.83 \pm 0.19$, whereas high luminosity IPs show lower $<Γ>$ of $1.34 \pm 0.02$. Moreover, the good spectral fits of PQ Gem and V2400 Oph indicate that the polar subclass of CVs may be successfully described by the thermal Comptonization as well.

QPOs and Orbital elements of X-ray binary 4U 0115+63 during the 2017 outburst observed by Insight-HXMT

In this paper, we presented a detailed timing analysis of a prominent outburst of 4U 0115+63 detected by \textit{Insight}-HXMT in 2017 August. The spin period of the neutron star was determined to be $3.61398\pm 0.00002$ s at MJD 57978. We measured the period variability and extract the orbital elements of the binary system. The angle of periastron evolved with a rate of $0.048\pm0.003$ $yr^{-1}$. The light curves are folded to sketch the pulse profiles in different energy ranges. A multi-peak structure in 1-10 keV is clearly illustrated. We introduced wavelet analysis into our data analysis procedures to study QPO signals and perform a detailed wavelet analysis in many different energy ranges. Through the wavelet spectra, we report the discovery of a QPO at the frequency $\sim 10$ mHz. In addition, the X-ray light curves showed multiple QPOs in the period of $\sim 16-32 $ s and $\sim 67- 200 $ s. We found that the $\sim100$ s QPO was significant in most of the observations and energies. There exist positive relations between X-ray luminosity and their Q-factors and S-factors, while the QPO periods have no correlation with X-ray luminosity. In wavelet phase maps, we found that the pulse phase of $\sim 67- 200 $ s QPO drifting frequently while the $\sim 16-32 $ s QPO scarcely drifting. The dissipation of oscillations from high energy to low energy was also observed. These features of QPOs in 4U 0115+63 provide new challenge to our understanding of their physical origins.

Microscopic evidence for the intra-unit-cell electronic nematicity inside the pseudogap phase in YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$

Understanding the nature of the mysterious pseudogap phenomenon is one of the most important issues associated with cuprate high-$T_c$ superconductors. Here, we report $^{17}$O nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies on two planar oxygen sites in stoichiometric cuprate YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ to investigate the symmetry breaking inside the pseudogap phase. We observe that the Knight shifts of the two oxygen sites are identical at high temperatures but different below $T_{\rm nem} \sim$ 185 K, which is close to the pseudogap temperature $T^{\ast}$. Our result provides a microscopic evidence for intra-unit-cell electronic nematicity. The difference in quadrupole resonance frequency between the two oxygen sites is unchanged below $T_{\rm nem}$, which suggests that the observed nematicity does not directly stem from the local charge density modulation. Furthermore, a short-range charge density wave (CDW) order is observed below $T \simeq$ 150 K. The additional broadening in the $^{17}$O-NMR spectra because of this CDW order is determined to be inequivalent for the two oxygen sites, which is similar to that observed in case of nematicity. These results suggest a possible connection between nematicity, CDW order, and pseudogap.

Bosonic quantum error correction codes in superconducting quantum circuits

Quantum information is vulnerable to environmental noise and experimental imperfections, hindering the reliability of practical quantum information processors. Therefore, quantum error correction (QEC) that can protect quantum information against noise is vital for universal and scalable quantum computation. Among many different experimental platforms, superconducting quantum circuits and bosonic encodings in superconducting microwave modes are appealing for their unprecedented potential in QEC. During the last few years, bosonic QEC is demonstrated to reach the break-even point, i.e. the lifetime of a logical qubit is enhanced to exceed that of any individual components composing the experimental system. Beyond that, universal gate sets and fault-tolerant operations on the bosonic codes are also realized, pushing quantum information processing towards the QEC era. In this article, we review the recent progress of the bosonic codes, including the Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill codes, cat codes, and binomial codes, and discuss the opportunities of bosonic codes in various quantum applications, ranging from fault-tolerant quantum computation to quantum metrology. We also summarize the challenges associated with the bosonic codes and provide an outlook for the potential research directions in the long terms.
