Lyapunov Control on Quantum Open System in Decoherence-free Subspaces

A scheme to drive and manipulate a finite-dimensional quantum system in the decoherence-free subspaces(DFS) by Lyapunov control is proposed. Control fields are established by Lyapunov function. This proposal can drive the open quantum system into the DFS and manipulate it to any desired eigenstate of the free Hamiltonian. An example which consists of a four-level system with three long-lived states driven by two lasers is presented to exemplify the scheme. We have performed numerical simulations for the dynamics of the four-level system, which show that the scheme works good.

Atmospheric neutrino oscillation analysis with sub-leading effects in Super-Kamiokande I, II, and III

We present a search for non-zero theta_{13} and deviations of sin^2 theta_{23} from 0.5 in the oscillations of atmospheric neutrino data from Super-Kamiokande -I, -II, and -III. No distortions of the neutrino flux consistent with non-zero theta_{13} are found and both neutrino mass hierarchy hypotheses are in agreement with the data. The data are best fit at Delta m^2 = 2.1 x 10^-3 eV^2, sin^2 theta_{13} = 0.0, and sin^2 theta_{23} =0.5. In the normal (inverted) hierarchy theta_{13} and Delta m^2 are constrained at the one-dimensional 90% C.L. to sin^2 theta_{13} < 0.04 (0.09) and 1.9 (1.7) x 10^-3 < Delta m^2 < 2.6 (2.7) x 10^-3 eV^2. The atmospheric mixing angle is within 0.407 <= sin^2 theta_{23} <= 0.583 at 90% C.L.

Discovery of a magnetic neutron star in X-ray transient IGR J01583+6713

IGR J01583+6713 is a new transient source discovered by the INTEGRAL/IBIS hard X-ray surveys. Optical observations suggested that it should be a high mass X-ray binary, but its nature is still unclear. We used the INTEGRAL/IBIS data to study the nature of the transient hard X-ray source IGR J01583+6713 during its outburst. Temporal profiles and spectral properties of IGR J01583+6713 around its outburst on 2005 Dec 6 were obtained. During the outburst, the mean X-ray luminosity reached around $4\times 10^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the energy range of 20 -- 100 keV. The continuum spectrum can be fitted by a bremsstrahlung model of $kT\sim 35$ keV or a power-law model of $Γ\sim 2.1$, and the electron resonant cyclotron absorption lines at $\sim 35$ keV and possible at $\sim 67$ keV were detected, suggesting that a magnetic neutron star of $B\sim 4\times 10^{12}$ G is located in IGR J01583+6713. Then we identify IGR J01583+6713 as a transient X-ray sources with a magnetic neutron star. After the outburst, the flux of IGR J01583+6713 was decreasing and it could not be detected by IBIS after 2005 Dec 10. During the outburst, we cannot conform the possible pulse period at 469 s reported before and have not detected the modulation signals in the range of 200 -- 2000 s with the IBIS observations. The transient hard X-ray source IGR J01583+6713 contain a magnetic neutron star, which would help to understand its transient nature.

Adiabatic evolution under quantum control

One of the difficulties in adiabatic quantum computation is the limit on the computation time. Here we propose two schemes to speed-up the adiabatic evolution. To apply this controlled adiabatic evolution to adiabatic quantum computation, we design one of the schemes without any prior knowledge of the instantaneous eigenstates of the final Hamiltonian. Whereas in another scheme, the control is constructed with the instantaneous eigenstate that is the target state of the control. As an illustration, we study a two-level system driven by a time-dependent magnetic field under the control. The physics behind the control scheme is explained.

Star and protoplanetary disk properties in Orion's suburbs

(Note: this is a shortened version of the original "structured" A&A format abstract.) We performed a large optical spectroscopic and photometric survey of the Lynds~1630N and 1641 clouds. We provide a catalog of 132 confirmed young stars in L1630N and 267 such objects in L1641. We identify 28 transition disk systems, 20 of which were previously unknown, as well as 42 new transition disk candidates for which we have broad-band photometry but no optical spectroscopy. We estimate mass accretion rates M_acc from the equivalent widths of the H_alpha, H_beta, and HeI 5876Åemission lines, and find a dependence on stellar mass of M_acc propto Mstar^alpha, with alpha~3.1 in the subsolar mass range that we probe. An investigation of a large literature sample of mass accretion rate estimates yields a similar slope of alpha~2.8 in the subsolar regime, but a shallower slope of alpha~2.0 if the whole mass range of 0.04 M_sun-5 Msun is included. Among the transition disk objects, the fraction of stars that show significant accretion activity is relatively low compared to stars with still optically thick disks (26\pm11% vs. 57\pm6%, respectively). However, those transition disks that do show significant accretion have the same median accretion rate as normal optically thick disks of 3-4*10^{-9} M_sun/yr. We find that the ages of the transition disks and the WTTSs without disks are statistically indistinguishable, and both groups are significantly older than the CTTSs. These results argue against disk-binary interaction or gravitational instability as mechanisms causing a transition disk appearance. Our observations indicate that disk lifetimes in the clustered population are shorter than in the distributed population. We propose refined Halpha equivalent width criteria to distinguish WTTSs from CTTSs.

Evidence for a magnetic neutron star in high mass X-ray binary 4U 2206+54 with INTEGRAL/IBIS observations

The hard X-ray source 4U 2206+54 is a peculiar high mass X-ray binary with a main-sequence donor star. Recent X-ray observations suggested that the compact object in 4U 2206+54 may be a neutron star. The X-ray emission comes from the accretion of stellar winds from the massive donor stars, and variability of luminosity may be due to the changes of its orbit phase. To further reveal the nature of compact object, we studied 4U 2206+54 with INTEGRAL/IBIS observations in two years, and found that in most time, 4U 2206+54 undergone a quiescent state and sometime an active state. In the quiescent state the spectrum can be fitted by a power-law model of $Γ\sim 2.1$ with a hard X-ray luminosity of $\sim 5\times 10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (20-- 100 keV). While in the active state, the 20-- 100 keV hard X-ray luminosity reaches $\sim 2\times 10^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and the spectrum is fitted by a thermal bremmstrahlung model of $kT\sim 43$ keV plus two cyclotron absorption lines at $\sim$ 30 and 60 keV. Then we derived a magnetic field of 3.3$\times 10^{12}$ G for the compact object in 4U 2206+54. During the active state, we found a pulsation period of $\sim$ 5400 s in the light curve of 4U 2206+54. So the compact object in 4U 2206+54 should be a magnetic neutron star with a slow pulsation. Cyclotron absorption lines detected in the active state and non-detection in the quiescent state suggested that two different accretion states have possible different hard X-ray emission regions: surface of neutron star in the active state; the magnetic-accretion pressure equivalent point in the quiescent state. The re-analysis of the RXTE/ASM light curve found the modulation periods at $\sim 9.56$ days and 19.11 days, and the orbit period of 4U 2206+54 should be 19.11 days.

Nonlinear effect on the transmission of light in a cavity array

Taking nonlinear effect into account, we study theoretically the transmission properties of photons in a one-dimensional coupled cavities, the cavity located at the center of the cavity array is coupled to a two-level system. By the traditional scattering theory, we calculate the transmission rate of photons along the cavities, and discuss the effect of nonlinearity on the photon transport. The results show that the controllable two-level system can act as a quantum switch in the coherent transport of photons. The dynamics of such a system is also studied by numerical simulations, the effect of the atom-field detuning and nonlinearity on the dynamics is shown and discussed.

Nonlinear effect on quantum control for two-level systems

The traditional quantum control theory focuses on linear quantum system. Here we show the effect of nonlinearity on quantum control of a two-level system, we find that the nonlinearity can change the controllability of quantum system. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the Lyapunov control can be used to overcome this uncontrollability induced by the nonlinear effect.

Average and deviation for slow-fast stochastic partial differential equations

Averaging is an important method to extract effective macroscopic dynamics from complex systems with slow modes and fast modes. This article derives an averaged equation for a class of stochastic partial differential equations without any Lipschitz assumption on the slow modes. The rate of convergence in probability is obtained as a byproduct. Importantly, the deviation between the original equation and the averaged equation is also studied. A martingale approach proves that the deviation is described by a Gaussian process. This gives an approximation to errors of $\mathcal{O}(\e)$ instead of $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{\e})$ attained in previous averaging.

Slow manifold and averaging for slow-fast stochastic differential system

We consider multiscale stochastic dynamical systems. In this article an \emph{intermediate} reduced model is obtained for a slow-fast system with fast mode driven by white noise. First, the reduced stochastic system on exponentially attracting slow manifold reduced system is derived to errors of $\mathcal{O}(ε)$. Second, averaging derives an autonomous deterministic system up to errors of $\mathcal{O}(\sqrtε)$. Then an intermediate reduced model, which is an autonomous deterministic system driven by white noise up to errors of $\mathcal{O}(ε)$, is derived using a martingale approach to account for fluctuations about the averaged system. This intermediate reduced model has a simpler form than the reduced model on the stochastic slow manifold.

60Fe and Massive Stars

Gamma-ray line emission from radioactive decay of 60Fe provides constraints on nucleosynthesis in massive stars and supernovae. We detect the gamma-ray lines from 60Fe decay at 1173 and 1333 keV using three years of data from the spectrometer SPI on board INTEGRAL. The average flux per line is (4.4 \pm 0.9) \times 10^{-5} ph cm^{-2} s^{-1} rad^{-1} for the inner Galaxy region. Deriving the Galactic 26Al gamma-ray line flux with using the same set of observations and analysis method, we determine the flux ratio of 60Fe/26Al gamma-rays as 0.15 \pm 0.05. We discuss the implications of these results for the widely-held hypothesis that 60Fe is synthesized in core-collapse supernovae, and also for the closely-related question of the precise origin of 26Al in massive stars.

Spectral and intensity variations of Galactic 26^Al emission

Gamma-ray line emission from the radioactive decay of 26Al reflects nucleosynthesis in massive stars and supernovae. We use INTEGRAL 26Al measurements to characterize the distribution and characteristics of 26Al source regions throughout the Galaxy. We detect the 26Al line from the inner Galaxy at 28σsignificance. The line appears narrow, and we constrain broadening in the source regions to <1.3 keV (2σ). Different sky distribution models do not significantly affect those large-scale results. The 26Al intensity for the inner Galaxy is derived as (2.9\pm 0.2)\times 10^{-4}ph\ cm^{-2} s^{-1} rad^{-1}, consistent with earlier results from COMPTEL and SPI data. This can be translated to an 26Al mass of 2.7\pm 0.7 solar mass in the Galaxy as a whole. The 26Al intensity is also confirmed to be somewhat brighter in the 4th than in the 1st quadrant (ratio 1.3\pm 0.2). 26Al spectra separately derived for regions along the Galactic plane show clear line centroid shifts, attributed largely to the Galaxy's large-scale rotation. The 26Al line toward the direction of the Aquila region (20deg < l < 40deg) appears somewhat broadened. Latitudinal variations of 26Al emission towards the inner Galaxy are studied, finding a latitudinal scale height of 130^{+120}_{-70} pc (1σ) for 26Al in the inner Galaxy and a hint of peculiar 26Al emission towards the region l<0deg, b>5deg.

Joint Transmitter-Receiver Design for the Downlink Multiuser Spatial Multiplexing MIMO System

This paper proposes a joint transmitter-receiver design to minimize the weighted sum power under the post-processing signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (post-SINR) constraints for all subchannels. Simulation results demonstrate that the algorithm can not only satisfy the post-SINR constraints but also easily adjust the power distribution among the users by changing the weights accordingly. Hence the algorithm can be used to alleviates the adjacent cell interference by reducing the transmitting power to the edge users without performance penalty.

Are oxygen and neon enriched in PNe and is the current solar Ne/O abundance ratio underestimated?

A thorough critical literature survey has been carried out for reliable measurements of oxygen and neon abundances of planetary nebulae (PNe) and HII regions. By contrasting the results of PNe and of HII regions, we aim to address the issues of the evolution of oxygen and neon in the interstellar medium (ISM) and in the late evolutionary phases of low- and intermediate-mass stars (LIMS), as well as the currently hotly disputed solar Ne/O abundance ratio. Through the comparisons, we find that neon abundance and Ne/O ratio increase with increasing oxygen abundance in both types of nebulae, with positive correlation coefficients larger than 0.75. The correlations suggest different enrichment mechanisms for oxygen and neon in the ISM, in the sense that the growth of neon is delayed compared to oxygen. The differences of abundances between PNe and HII regions, are mainly attributed to the results of nucleosynthesis and dredge-up processes that occurred in the progenitor stars of PNe. We find that both these alpha-elements are significantly enriched at low metallicity (initial oxygen abundance <= 8.0) but not at metallicity higher than the SMC. The fact that Ne/O ratios measured in PNe are almost the same as those in HII regions, regardless of the metallicity, suggests a very similar production mechanism of neon and oxygen in intermediate mass stars (IMS) of low initial metallicities and in more massive stars, a conjecture that requires verification by further theoretical studies. This result also strongly suggests that both the solar neon abundance and the Ne/O ratio should be revised upwards by ~0.22 dex from the Asplund, Grevesse & Sauval values or by ~0.14 dex from the Grevesse & Sauval values.

Loschmidt echo and Berry phase around degeneracies in nonlinear systems

We study the Loschmidt echo and Berry phase in a nonlinear system transported around a double and triple degeneracy. The nonlinearity of the system makes the Berry phase different from that in linear systems. We propose a witness of nonlinearity for the nonlinear system and show its dependence on the parameters of the system, taking the standard Landau-Zener model as an example. We calculate the Loschmidt echo(LE) or quantum fidelity in the quantum dynamics under perturbations around the degeneracy, and establish a connection between the LE and the witness of nonlinearity. These phases and Loschmidt echo can be observed with current experimental technology in a nonlinear resonator.

Elemental abundances of Galactic bulge planetary nebulae from optical recombination lines

(abridged) Deep long-slit optical spectrophotometric observations are presented for 25 Galactic bulge planetary nebulae (GBPNe) and 6 Galactic disk planetary nebulae (GDPNe). The spectra, combined with archival ultraviolet spectra obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) and infrared spectra obtained with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO), have been used to carry out a detailed plasma diagnostic and element abundance analysis utilizing both collisional excited lines (CELs) and optical recombination lines (ORLs). Comparisons of plasma diagnostic and abundance analysis results obtained from CELs and from ORLs reproduce many of the patterns previously found for GDPNe. In particular we show that the large discrepancies between electron temperatures (Te's) derived from CELs and from ORLs appear to be mainly caused by abnormally low values yielded by recombination lines and/or continua. Similarly, the large discrepancies between heavy element abundances deduced from ORLs and from CELs are largely caused by abnormally high values obtained from ORLs, up to tens of solar in extreme cases. It appears that whatever mechanisms are causing the ubiquitous dichotomy between CELs and ORLs, their main effects are to enhance the emission of ORLs, but hardly affect that of CELs. It seems that heavy element abundances deduced from ORLs may not reflect the bulk composition of the nebula. Rather, our analysis suggests that ORLs of heavy element ions mainly originate from a previously unseen component of plasma of Te's of just a few hundred Kelvin, which is too cool to excite any optical and UV CELs.

SPI observations of the diffuse 60Fe emission in the Galaxy

Gamma-ray line emission from radioactive decay of 60Fe provides constraints on nucleosynthesis in massive stars and supernovae. The spectrometer SPI on board INTEGRAL has accumulated nearly three years of data on gamma-ray emission from the Galactic plane. We have analyzed these data with suitable instrumental-background models and sky distributions to produce high-resolution spectra of Galactic emission. We detect the gamma-ray lines from 60Fe decay at 1173 and 1333 keV, obtaining an improvement over our earlier measurement of both lines with now 4.9 sigma significance for the combination of the two lines. The average flux per line is (4.4 \pm 0.9) \times 10^{-5} ph cm^{-2} s^{-1} rad^{-1} for the inner Galaxy region. Deriving the Galactic 26Al gamma-ray line flux with using the same set of observations and analysis method, we determine the flux ratio of 60Fe/26Al gamma-rays as 0.148 \pm 0.06. The current theoretical predictions are still consistent with our result.

Effect of Decoherence on the Dynamics of Bose-Einstein Condensates in a Double-well Potential

We study the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential in the mean-field approximation. Decoherence effects are considered by analyzing the couplings of the condensate to environments. Two kinds of coupling are taken into account. With the first kind of coupling dominated, the decoherence can enhance the self-trapping by increasing the damping of the oscillations in the dynamics, while the decoherence from the second kind of condensate-environment coupling leads to spoiling of the quantum tunneling and self-trapping.
