Diffractive Phenomena and Shadowing in Deep-Inelastic Scattering

Shadowing effects in deep-inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering probe the mass spectrum of diffractive leptoproduction from individual nucleons. We explore this relationship using current experimental information on both processes. In recent data from the NMC and E665 collaboration, taken at small x << 0.1 and Q^2 < 1 GeV^2, shadowing is dominated by the diffractive excitation and coherent interaction of low mass vector mesons. If shadowing is explored at small x << 0.1 but large Q^2 >> 1 GeV^2 as discussed at HERA, the situation is different. Here dominant contributions come from the coherent interaction of diffractively produced heavy mass states. Furthermore we observe that the energy dependence of shadowing is directly related to the mass dependence of the diffractive production cross section for free nucleon targets.

Peripheral Nucleon-Nucleon Phase Shifts and Chiral Symmetry

Within the one-loop approximation of baryon chiral perturbation theory we calculate all one-pion and two-pion exchange contributions to the nucleon-nucleon interaction. In fact we construct the elastic NN-scattering amplitude up to and including third order in small momenta. The phase shifts with orbital angular momentum $L\geq2 $ and the mixing angles with $J\geq2$ are given parameterfree and thus allow for a detailed test of chiral symmetry in the two-nucleon system. We find that for the D-waves the $2π$-exchange corrections are too large as compared with empirical phase shifts, signaling the increasing importance of shorter range effects in lower partial waves. For higher partial waves, especially for G-waves, the model independent $2π$-exchange corrections bring the chiral prediction close to empirical NN phase shifts. We propose to use the chiral NN phase shifts with $L\geq 3$ as input in a future phase shift analysis. Furthermore, we compute the irreducible two-pion exchange NN-potentials in coordinate space. They turn out to be of van-der-Waals type, with exponential screening of two-pion mass range.

Deeply bound pionic states and the effective pion mass in nuclear systems

We show that the s-wave pion-nuclear potential which reproduces the deeply bound pionic states in Pb, recently discovered at GSI, is remarkably close to the one constructed directly from low energy theorems based on chiral symmetry. Converting this information into an effective pion mass we find $m_π^\star/m_π\simeq 1.13$ in the center of the Pb nucleus, and $m_π^\star/m_π\simeq 1.07$ in symmetric nuclear matter.

Current correlation functions, QCD sum rules and vector mesons in baryonic matter

Based on an effective Lagrangian which combines chiral SU(3) dynamics with vector meson dominance, we have developed a model for the forward vector meson-nucleon scattering amplitudes. We use this as an input to calculate the low energy part of the current-current correlation function in nuclear matter. Its spectrum enters directly in the ``left hand side'' of QCD sum rules. For the isovector channel we find a significant enhancement of the in-medium spectral density below the rho resonance while the rho meson mass itself changes only slightly. The situation is different in the isoscalar channel, where the mass and peak position of the omega meson move downward while its width increases less drastically than in the rho meson case. For the phi meson we find almost no mass shift; the width of the peak broadens moderately. We observe a remarkable degree of consistency with the operator product expansion of QCD sum rules in all three channels. We point out, however, that these results cannot simply be interpreted, as commonly done, in terms of a universal rescaling of vector meson masses in matter.

QCD Sum Rules and Vector Mesons in Nuclear Matter

Based on an effective Lagrangian which combines chiral SU(3) dynamics with vector meson dominance, we have developed a model for the s-wave vector meson-nucleon scattering amplitudes. We use this as an input for the low energy part of the current-current correlation function in nuclear matter. Its spectrum enters directly in the ``left hand side'' of QCD sum rules. For the isovector channel we find a significant enhancement of the in-medium spectral density below the $ρ$ resonance while the mass of $ρ$ meson itself decreases only slightly. The situation is different in the isoscalar channel. Here the mass and therefore the peak position of the $ω$ meson decreases strongly while the width increases less drastically than in the $ρ$ meson case. For the $ϕ$ meson we find almost no mass shift, the width of the peak broadens due to the imaginary part of the scattering length. We find a remarkable degree of consistency with the operator product expansion of QCD sum rules in all three channels.

Polarized deuteron structure functions at small x

We investigate shadowing corrections to the polarized deuteron structure functions g_1^d and b_1. In the kinematic domain of current fixed target experiments we observe that shadowing effects in g_1^d are approximately twice as large as for the unpolarized structure function F_2^d. Furthermore, we find that b_1 is surprisingly large at x < 0.1 and receives dominant contributions from coherent double scattering.

Effective kaon mass in dense baryonic matter: role of correlations

We evaluate the effective kaon mass in dense nuclear matter. Pauli blocking and nucleon-nucleon short-range correlations are incorporated. The effects of short-range correlations are shown to be moderate and figure importantly only at densities larger than 2 times normal nuclear density. We discuss the relations between the present results and the results obtained in next-to-next-to-leading order chiral perturbation theory (${{\cal O} (Q^3)}$, where $Q$ is the characteristic small energy-momentum scale probed). We also discuss mean-field aspects, with some remarks on the relation between the short-range correlations and the four-Fermi contact terms in the chiral effective Lagrangian.

Diffractive rho^0 photo- and leptoproduction at high energies

We discuss the elastic photo- and leptoproduction of rho^0-mesons from nucleons at Q^2 < 1 GeV^2 as studied in recent experiments at HERA and FNAL. We find that the mass distribution of the measured π^+π^- pairs is determined to a large extent by the two-pion contribution to the photon spectral function as given by the pion form factor. With rising Q^2 the rate of diffractive events decreases and the π^+π^- mass distribution approaches a symmetric shape.

SU(3) Chiral Dynamics with Coupled Channels: Eta and Kaon Photoproduction

We identify the leading s-wave amplitudes of the SU(3) chiral meson-baryon Lagrangian with an effective coupled-channel potential which is iterated in a Lippmann-Schwinger equation. The strangeness $S=-1$ resonance $Λ(1405)$ and the $S_{11}(1535)$ nucleon resonance emerge as quasi-bound states of anti-kaon/nucleon and kaon/$Σ$-hyperon. Our approach to meson photoproduction introduces no new parameters. By adjusting a few finite range parameters we are able to simultaneously describe a large amount of low energy data. These include the cross sections of $K^-p$ elastic and inelastic scattering, the cross sections of eta meson and kaon photoproduction from nucleons as well as those of pion induced production of etas and kaons (16 different reaction channels altogether).

Effective Lagrangian approach to vector mesons, their structure and decays$^{*)}$

An improved update of the structure and decays of $ρ^0$, $ω$ and $ϕ$ mesons based on a chiral SU(3) Lagrangian, including anomaly terms is presented. We demonstrate that a consistent and quantitatively successful description of both pion and kaon electromagnetic form factors can be achieved. We also discuss the $e^+e^- \to π^+ π^0 π^-$ cross section, the Dalitz decay $ω\to π^0 μ^+ μ^-$ and aspects of $ρ^0 ω$ and $ωϕ$ mixing. Relations to previous versions of the Vector Meson Dominance model will be examined.

Nucleon Structure Functions at Moderate Q**2: Relativistic Constituent Quarks and Spectator Mass Spectrum

We present a model description of the nucleon valence structure function applicable over the entire region of the Bjorken variable x, and above moderate values of Q**2 (> 1 GeV**2). We stress the importance of describing the complete spectrum of intermediate states which are spectator to the deep-inelastic collision. At a scale of 1 GeV**2 the relevant degrees of freedom are constituent quarks and pions. The large-x region is then described in terms of scattering from constituent quarks in the nucleon, while the dressing of constituent quarks by pions plays an important role at intermediate x values. The correct small-x behavior, which is necessary for the proper normalization of the valence distributions, is guaranteed by modeling the asymptotic spectator mass spectrum according to Regge phenomenology.

Chiral Dynamics and the $S_{11}(1535)$ Nucleon Resonance

The $SU(3)$ chiral effective lagrangian at next-to-leading order is applied to the S-wave meson-baryon interaction in the energy range around the $ηN$ threshold. Potentials are derived from this lagrangian and used in a coupled channel calculation of the $πN$, $ηN$, $K Λ$, $K Σ$ system in the isospin-$1/2$, $l=0$ partial wave. Using the same parameters as obtained from a fit to the low energy $\overline{K} N$ data it is found that a quasi-bound $K Σ$-state is formed, with properties remarkably similar to the $S_{11}(1535)$ nucleon resonance. In particular, we find a large partial decay width into $ηN$ consistent with the empirical data.

Chiral Dynamics and the Low Energy Kaon-Nucleon Interaction

We examine the meson-baryon interaction in the strangeness S=-1 sector using an effective chiral Lagrangian. Potentials are derived from this Lagrangian and used in a coupled-channel calculation of the low energy observables. The potentials are constructed such that in the Born approximation the s-wave scattering amplitude is the same as that given by the effective chiral Lagrangian, up to order $q^2$. Comparison is made with the available low energy hadronic data of the coupled $K^-p, Σπ, Λπ$ system, which includes the $Λ(1405)$ resonance, $K^-p$ elastic and inelastic scattering, and the threshold branching ratios of the $K^-p$ decay. Good fits to the experimental data and estimates of previously unknown Lagrangian parameters are obtained.

Phenomenology of Nuclear Shadowing in Deep-Inelastic Scattering

We investigate shadowing effects in deep-inelastic scattering from nuclei at small values $x<0.1$ of the Bjorken variable. Unifying aspects of generalized vector meson dominance and color transparency we first develop a model for deep-inelastic scattering from free nucleons at small $x$. In application to nuclear targets we find that the coherent interaction of quark-antiquark fluctuations with nucleons in a nucleus leads to the observed shadowing at $x<0.1$. We compare our results with most of the recent data for a large variety of nuclei and examine in particular the $Q^2$ dependence of the shadowing effect. While the coherent interaction of low mass vector mesons causes a major part of the shadowing observed in the $Q^2$ range of current experiments, the coherent scattering of continuum quark-antiquark pairs is also important and guarantees a very weak overall $Q^2$ dependence of the effect. We also discuss shadowing in deuterium and its implications for the quark flavor structure of nucleons. Finally we comment on shadowing effects in high-energy photon-nucleus reactions with real photons.

SPIN-DEPENDENT NUCLEAR STRUCTURE FUNCTIONS: GENERAL APPROACH WITH APPLICATION TO THE DEUTERON

We study deep-inelastic scattering from polarized nuclei within a covariant framework. A clear connection is established between relativistic and non-relativistic limits, which enables a rigorous derivation of convolution formulae for the spin-dependent nuclear structure functions g_1^A and g_2^A in terms of off-mass-shell extrapolations of polarized nucleon structure functions, g_1^N and g_2^N. Approximate expressions for g_{1,2}^A are obtained by expanding the off-shell g_{1,2}^N about their on-shell limits. As an application of the formalism we consider nuclear effects in the deuteron, knowledge of which is necessary to obtain accurate information on the spin-dependent structure functions of the neutron.

Nucleon Structure Functions from Relativistic Constituent Quarks

We investigate deep inelastic lepton scattering from the nucleon within a constituent quark picture, in which the internal structure of constituent quarks is modeled by meson and diquark dressing. In a covariant framework this structure leads to a breakdown of the factorization necessary for a convolution formulation. We perform our analysis in time-ordered perturbation theory in the infinite momentum frame where factorization of subprocesses is automatic. Numerical results are compared with recent data on valence quark distributions in the proton.

Note on Strange Quarks in the Nucleon

Scalar matrix elements involving strange quarks are studied in several models. Apart from a critical reexamination of results obtained in the Nambu and Jona-Lasinio model we study a scenario, motivated by instanton physics, where spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is induced by the flavor-mixing 't Hooft interaction only. We also investigate possible contributions of virtual kaon loops to the strangeness content of the nucleon.

Shadowing, Binding and Off-Shell Effects in Nuclear Deep Inelastic Scattering

We present a unified description of nuclear deep inelastic scattering (DIS) over the whole region $0<x<1$ of the Bjorken variable. Our approach is based on a relativistically covariant formalism which uses analytical properties of quark correlators. In the laboratory frame it naturally incorporates two mechanisms of DIS: (I) scattering from quarks and antiquarks in the target and (II) production of quark-antiquark pairs followed by interactions with the target. We first calculate structure functions of the free nucleon and develop a model for the quark spectral functions. We show that mechanism (II) is responsible for the sea quark content of the nucleon while mechanism (I) governs the valence part of the nucleon structure functions. We find that the coherent interaction of $\bar qq$ pairs with nucleons in the nucleus leads to shadowing at small $x$ and discuss this effect in detail. In the large $x$ region DIS takes place mainly on a single nucleon. There we focus on the derivation of the convolution model. We point out that the off-shell properties of the bound nucleon structure function give rise to sizable nuclear effects.
