Magnetic moments of vector, axial, and tensor mesons in lattice QCD

We present a calculation of magnetic moments for selected spin-1 mesons using the techniques of lattice QCD. This is carried out by introducing progressively small static magnetic field on the lattice and measuring the linear response of a hadron's mass shift. The calculations are done on $24^4$ quenched lattices using standard Wilson actions, with $β$=6.0 and pion mass down to 500 MeV. The results are compared to those from the form factor method where available.

Baryon magnetic moments in the background field method

We present a calculation of the magnetic moments for the baryon octet and decuplet using the background-field method and standard Wilson gauge and fermion actions in the quenched approximation of lattice QCD. Progressively smaller static magnetic fields are introduced on a $24^4$ lattice at beta=6.0 and the pion mass is probed down to about 500 MeV. Magnetic moments are extracted from the linear response of the masses to the background field.

Magnetic polarizability of hadrons from lattice QCD in the background field method

We present a calculation of hadron magnetic polarizability using the techniques of lattice QCD. This is carried out by introducing a uniform external magnetic field on the lattice and measuring the quadratic part of a hadron's mass shift. The calculation is performed on a $24^4$ lattice with standard Wilson actions at beta=6.0 (spacing $a=0.1$ fm) and pion mass down to about 500 MeV. Results are obtained for 30 particles covering the entire baryon octet ($n$, $p$, $Σ^0$, $Σ^-$, $Σ^+$, $Ξ^-$, $Ξ^0$, $Λ$) and decuplet ($Δ^0$, $Δ^-$, $Δ^+$, $Δ^{++}$, $Σ^{*0}$, $Σ^{*-}$, $Σ^{*+}$, $Ξ^{*0}$, $Ξ^{*-}$, $Ω^-$), plus selected mesons ($π^0$, $π^+$, $π^-$, $K^0$, $K^+$, ${K}^-$, $ρ^0$, $ρ^+$, $ρ^-$, $K^{*0}$, $K^{*+}$, $K^{*-}$). The results are compared with available values from experiments and other theoretical calculations.

Baryon magnetic moments in the external field method

We present a calculation of the magnetic moments of the baryon octet and decuplet using the external field method and standard Wilson gauge and fermion actions in the quenched approximation. Progressively smaller static magnetic fields are introduced on a $24^4$ latticeat beta=6.0 and the pion mass is probed down to about 500 MeV. Magnetic moments are extracted from the linear response of the masses to the external field.

The nucleon's strange electromagnetic and scalar matrix elements

Quenched lattice QCD simulations and quenched chiral perturbation theory are used together for this study of strangeness in the nucleon. Dependences of the matrix elements on strange quark mass, valence quark mass and momentum transfer are discussed in both the lattice and chiral frameworks. The combined results of this study are in good agreement with existing experimental data and predictions are made for upcoming experiments. Possible future refinements of the theoretical method are suggested.

Magnetic polarizability of hadrons from lattice QCD

We extract the magnetic polarizability from the quadratic response of a hadron's mass shift in progressively small static magnetic fields. The calculation is done on a 24x12x12x24 lattice at a = 0.17 fm with an improved gauge action and the clover quark action. The results are compared to those from experiments and models where available.

Strange matrix elements of the nucleon

Results for the disconnected contributions to matrix elements of the vector current and scalar density have been obtained for the nucleon from the Wilson action at beta=6 using a stochastic estimator technique and 2000 quenched configurations. Various methods for analysis are employed and chiral extrapolations are discussed.

Strange-quark Current in the Nucleon from Lattice QCD

The contribution of the strange-quark current to the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon is studied using lattice QCD. The strange current matrix elements from our lattice calculation are analyzed in two different ways, the differential method used in an earlier work by Wilcox and a cumulative method which sums over all current insertion times. The preliminary results of our simulation indicate the importance of high statistics, and that consistent results between the varying analysis methods can be achieved. Although this simulation does not yet yield a number that can be compared to experiment, several criteria useful in assessing the robustness of a signal extracted from a noisy background are presented.

Reply to Isgur's Comments on Valence QCD

We reply to Nathan Isgur's critique that is directed at some of the conclusions drawn from the lattice simulation of valence QCD, regarding the valence quark model and effective chiral theories.

Valence QCD: Connecting QCD to the Quark Model

A valence QCD theory is developed to study the valence quark properties of hadrons. To keep only the valence degrees of freedom, the pair creation through the Z graphs is deleted in the connected insertions; whereas, the sea quarks are eliminated in the disconnected insertions. This is achieved with a new ``valence QCD'' lagrangian where the action in the time direction is modified so that the particle and antiparticle decouple. The theory has the vector and axial $U(2N_F)$ symmetry in the particle-antiparticle space. Through lattice simulation, it appears that this is dynamically broken down to $U_q(N_F) \times U_{\bar{q}}(N_F)$. Furthermore, the lattice simulation reveals spin degeneracy in the hadron masses and SU(6) relations in the ratios of $F_A/D_A, F_S/D_S$, and $μ^n/μ^p$. This leads to an approximate $U_q(2N_F) \times U_{\bar{q}}(2N_F)$ symmetry which is the basis for the valence quark model. We find that the masses of N, $Δ, ρ, π, a_1$, and $a_0$ all drop precipitously compared to their counterparts in the quenched QCD calculation. This is interpreted as due to the disapperance of the `constituent' quark mass which is dynamically generated through tadpole diagrams. Form the near degeneracy between N and $Δ$ for the quark masses we have studied (ranging from one to four times the strange mass), we conclude that the origin of the hyper-fine splitting in the baryon is largely attibuted to the Goldstone boson exchanges between the quarks. These are the consequences of lacking chiral symmetry in valence QCD. We discuss its implication on the models of hadrons.

Nucleon Axial Form Factor from Lattice QCD

Results for the isovector axial form factors of the proton from a lattice QCD calculation are presented for both point-split and local currents. They are obtained on a quenched $16^{3} \times 24$ lattice at $β= 6.0$ with Wilson fermions for a range of quark masses from strange to charm. We determine the finite lattice renormalization for both the local and point-split currents of heavy quarks. Results extrapolated to the chiral limit show that the $q^2$ dependence of the axial form factor agrees reasonably well with experiment. The axial coupling constant $g_A$ calculated for the local and the point-split currents is about 6\% and 12\% smaller than the experimental value respectively.
