Gaussian matrix elements in a cylindrical harmonic oscillator basis

We derive a formalism, the separation method, for the efficient and accurate calculation of two-body matrix elements for a Gaussian potential in the cylindrical harmonic-oscillator basis. This formalism is of critical importance for Hartree-Fock and Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations in deformed nuclei using realistic, finite-range effective interactions between nucleons. The results given here are also relevant for microscopic many-body calculations in atomic and molecular physics, as the formalism can be applied to other types of interactions beyond the Gaussian form. The derivation is presented in great detail to emphasize the methodology, which relies on generating functions. The resulting analytical expressions for the Gaussian matrix elements are checked for speed and accuracy as a function of the number of oscillator shells and against direct numerical integration.

The microscopic theory of fission

Fission-fragment properties have been calculated for thermal neutron-induced fission on a $^{239}\textrm{Pu}$ target, using constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations with a finite-range effective interaction. A quantitative criterion based on the interaction energy between the nascent fragments is introduced to define the scission configurations. The validity of this criterion is benchmarked against experimental measurements of the kinetic energies and of multiplicities of neutrons emitted by the fragments.

Microscopic calculation of 240Pu scission with a finite-range effective force

Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations of hot fission in $^{240}\textrm{Pu}$ have been performed with a newly-implemented code that uses the D1S finite-range effective interaction. The hot-scission line is identified in the quadrupole-octupole-moment coordinate space. Fission-fragment shapes are extracted from the calculations. A benchmark calculation for $^{226}\textrm{Th}$ is obtained and compared to results in the literature. In addition, technical aspects of the use of HFB calculations for fission studies are examined in detail. In particular, the identification of scission configurations, the sensitivity of near-scission calculations to the choice of collective coordinates in the HFB iterations, and the formalism for the adjustment of collective-variable constraints are discussed. The power of the constraint-adjustment algorithm is illustrated with calculations near the critical scission configurations with up to seven simultaneous constraints.

Event-by-event study of prompt neutrons from 239Pu(n,f)

Employing a recently developed Monte Carlo model, we study the fission of 240Pu induced by neutrons with energies from thermal to just below the threshold for second chance fission. Current measurements of the mean number of prompt neutrons emitted in fission, together with less accurate measurements of the neutron energy spectra, place remarkably fine constraints on predictions of microscopic calculations. In particular, the total excitation energy of the nascent fragments must be specified to within 1 MeV to avoid disagreement with measurements of the mean neutron multiplicity. The combination of the Monte Carlo fission model with a statistical likelihood analysis also presents a powerful tool for the evaluation of fission neutron data. Of particular importance is the fission spectrum, which plays a key role in determining reactor criticality. We show that our approach can be used to develop an estimate of the fission spectrum with uncertainties several times smaller than current experimental uncertainties for outgoing neutron energies up to 2 MeV.

Level densities and $γ$-ray strength functions in $^{170,171,172}$Yb

Level densities and radiative strength functions in $^{171}$Yb and $^{170}$Yb nuclei have been measured using the $^{171}$Yb($^3$He,$^3$He$^\primeγ$)$^{171}$Yb and $^{171}$Yb($^3$He,$αγ$)$^{170}$Yb reactions. New data on $^{171}$Yb are compared to a previous measurement for $^{171}$Yb from the $^{172}$Yb($^3$He,$αγ$)$^{171}$Yb reaction. Systematics of level densities and radiative strength functions in $^{170,171,172}$Yb are established. The entropy excess in $^{171}$Yb relative to the even-even nuclei $^{170,172}$Yb due to the unpaired neutron quasiparticle is found to be approximately 2$k_B$. Results for the radiative strength function from the two reactions lead to consistent parameters characterizing the ``pygmy'' resonances. Pygmy resonances in the $^{170,172}$Yb populated by the ($^3$He,$α$) reaction appear to be split into two components for both of which a complete set of resonance parameters are obtained.

Evolution of level density step structures from 56,57-Fe to 96,97-Mo

Level densities have been extracted from primary gamma spectra for 56,57-Fe and 96,97-Mo nuclei using (3-He,alpha gamma) and (3-He,3-He') reactions on 57-Fe and 97-Mo targets. The level density curves reveal step structures above the pairing gap due to the breaking of nucleon Cooper pairs. The location of the step structures in energy and their shapes arise from the interplay between single-particle energies and seniority-conserving and seniority-non-conserving interactions.

Superdeformation in $^{198}$Po

The $^{174}$Yb($^{29}$Si,5n) reaction at 148 MeV with thin targets was used to populate high-angular momentum states in $^{198}$Po. Resulting $γ$ rays were observed with Gammasphere. A weakly-populated superdeformed band of 10 $γ$-ray transitions was found and has been assigned to $^{198}$Po. This is the first observation of a SD band in the $A \approx 190$ region in a nucleus with $Z > 83$. The ${\cal J}^{(2)}$ of the new band is very similar to those of the yrast SD bands in $^{194}$Hg and $^{196}$Pb. The intensity profile suggests that this band is populated through states close to where the SD band crosses the yrast line and the angular momentum at which the fission process dominates.

Onset of Collectivity in Neutron Deficient $^{196,198}$Po

We have studied via in-beam $γ$-ray spectroscopy $^{196}$Po and $^{198}$Po, which are the first neutron-deficient Po isotopes to exhibit a collective low-lying structure. The ratios of yrast state energies and the E2 branching ratios of transitions from non-yrast to yrast states are indicative of a low-lying vibrational structure. The onset of collective motion in these isotopes can be attributed to the opening of the neutron i$_{13/2}$ orbital at N$\approx$112 and the resulting large overlap between the two valence protons in the h$_{9/2}$ orbital and the valence neutrons in the i$_{13/2}$ orbital.

Spectroscopy of $^{194}$Po

Prompt, in-beam $γ$ rays following the reaction $^{170}$Yb + 142 MeV $^{28}$Si were measured at the ATLAS facility using 10 Compton-suppressed Ge detectors and the Fragment Mass Analyzer. Transitions in $^{194}$Po were identified and placed using $γ$-ray singles and coincidence data gated on the mass of the evaporation residues. A level spectrum up to J$\approx$10$\hbar$ was established. The structure of $^{194}$Po is more collective than that observed in the heavier polonium isotopes and indicates that the structure has started to evolve towards the more collective nature expected for deformed nuclei.
