Magnetic field dependence of the low-temperature specific heat of the electron-doped superconductor Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4

We remeasured the magnetic field dependence of the low-temperature specific heat of the electron-doped superconductor Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4 (T_C=22\pm 2K) under a different measurement procedure. Under field-cooling, the electronic specific heat follows C_{el}(H, T)=γ(H)T from 4.5K down to 1.8K. In the field range H_{C1}<H<0.5 H_{C2}, the Sommerfeld coefficient γ(H) is well fit by a power-law γ(H)\sim H^{1/2}. This result suggests that the pairing symmetry is d-wave-like at all temperatures below 4.5K. Our new measurement shows no evidence for the linear field dependence of γ(H) found previously at T=2K.

First-principles calculations of a high-pressure synthesized compound PtC

First-principles density-functional method is used to study the recently high-pressure synthesized compound PtC. It is confirmed by our calculations that the platinum carbide has a zinc-blende ground-state phase at zero pressure and the rock-salt structure is a high-pressure phase. The theoretical transition pressure from zinc-blende to rock-salt is determined to be 52GPa. Furthermore, our calculation shows the possibility that the experimentally synthesized PtC by Ono et al. under high pressure condition might undergo a transition from rock-salt structure to zinc-blende after the pressure quench to ambient condition.

Coexistence of Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism Probed by Simultaneous NMR and Electrical Transport in (TMTSF)2PF6

We report simultaneous NMR and electrical transport experiments in the pressure range near the boundary of the antiferromagnetic spin density wave (SDW) insulator and the metal-lic/superconducting (SC) phase in (TMTSF)2PF6. Measurements indicate a tricritical point separat-ing a line of second order SDW/metal transitions from a line of first order SDW/metal(SC) transi-tions with coexistence of macroscopic regions of SDW and metal(SC) order, with little mutual in-teraction but strong hysteretic effects. NMR results quantify the fraction of each phase.

Electron-lattice coupling and the broken symmetries of the molecular salt (TMTTF)$_2$SbF$_6$

(TMTTF)$_2$SbF$_6$ is known to undergo a charge ordering (CO) phase transition at $T_{CO}\approx156K$ and another transition to an antiferromagnetic (AF) state at $T_N\approx 8K$. Applied pressure $P$ causes a decrease in both $T_{CO}$ and $T_N$. When $P>0.5 GPa$, the CO is largely supressed, and there is no remaining signature of AF order. Instead, the ground state is a singlet. In addition to establishing an expanded, general phase diagram for the physics of TMTTF salts, we establish the role of electron-lattice coupling in determining how the system evolves with pressure.

Influence of Charge Order on the Ground States of TMTTF Molecular Salts

(TMTTF)2AsF6 and (TMTTF)2SbF6 are both known to undergo a charge ordering phase transition, though their ground states are different. The ground state of the first is Spin-Peierls, and the second is an antiferromagnet. We study the effect of pressure on the ground states and the charge-ordering using 13C NMR spectroscopy. The experiments demonstrate that the the CO and SP order parameters are repulsive, and consequently the AF state is stabilized when the CO order parameter is large, as it is for (TMTTF)2SbF6. An extension of the well-known temperature/pressure phase diagram is proposed.

Phase Inhomogeneity of the Itinerant Ferromagnet MnSi at High Pressures

The pressure induced quantum phase transition of the weakly itinerant ferromagnet MnSi is studied using zero-field $^{29}Si$ NMR spectroscopy and relaxation. Below $P^*\approx 1.2GPa$, the intensity of the signal and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation is independent of pressure, even though the amplitude of the magnetization drops by 20% from the ambient pressure amplitude. For $P>P^*$, the decreasing intensity within the experimentally detectable bandwidth signals the onset of an inhomogeneous phase that persists to the highest pressure measured, $P\ge 1.75GPa$, which is well beyond the known critical pressure $P_c=1.46GPa$. Implications for the non-Fermi Liquid behavior observed for $P>P_c$ are discussed.

Inhomogeneous electronic structure probed by spin-echo experiments in the electron doped high-Tc superconductor Pr_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-y}

63Cu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spin-echo decay rate (T_2^{-1}) measurements are reported for the normal and superconducting states of a single crystal of Pr_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-y} (PCCO) in a magnetic field B_0=9T over the temperature range 2K<T<200K. The spin-echo decay rate is temperature-dependent for T<55K, and has a substantial dependence on the radio frequency (rf) pulse parameters below T~25K. This dependence indicates that T_2^{-1} is strongly effected by a local magnetic field distribution that can be modified by the rf pulses, including ones that are not at the nuclear Larmor frequency. The low-temperature results are consistent with the formation of a static inhomogeneous electronic structure that couples to the rf fields of the pulses.

Do High Frequency QPOs Depend on Phase of Low Frequency QPOs in XTE J1550-564 ?

We have studied the dependence of the high frequency Quasi-periodic Oscillation (QPO) (~284 Hz) on the phase of the low frequency QPO (~6 Hz) in the black hole X-ray binary XTE J1550-564 in the observations of the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) performed on MJD 51241. By selecting the local maxima and the local minima in the light curve on the 6 Hz QPO time scale, we have found the corresponding high frequency QPO frequencies are consistent within 1.5 sigma. However, the average central QPO frequency of the maxima and the minima is about 2.0 sigma lower than the average high frequency QPO frequency obtained in the entire observation. This marginally suggests that the high frequency QPOs probably varies in frequency on short time scales. We briefly discuss these results and their consequences.

Competition and coexistence of bond and charge orders in (TMTTF)2AsF6

(TMTTF)2AsF6 undergoes two phase transitions upon cooling from 300 K. At Tco=103 K a charge-ordering (CO) occurs, and at Tsp(B=9 T)=11 K the material undergoes a spin-Peierls (SP) transition. Within the intermediate, CO phase, the charge disproportionation ratio is found to be at least 3:1 from carbon-13 NMR 1/T1 measurements on spin-labeled samples. Above Tsp, up to about 3Tsp, 1/T1 is independent of temperature, indicative of low-dimensional magnetic correlations. With the application of about 0.15 GPa pressure, Tsp increases substantially, while Tco is rapidly suppressed, demonstrating that the two orders are competing. The experiments are compared to results obtained from calculations on the 1D extended Peierls-Hubbard model.

The Cross-Spectra of Cir X-1: Evolution of Time Lags

Earlier work showed that the track in the X-ray hardness-intensity diagram of Cir X-1 corresponds to a Z track in its color-color diagram. In this paper, we study the cross spectrum of Cir X-1 in different regions of the hardness-intensity diagram with $RXTE$/PCA data. Comparing the light curves of Cir X-1 for the energy band 1.8-5.1 keV to those for 5.1-13.1 keV, we find that Cir X-1 exhibits a hard time lag on the horizontal branch, and a soft time lag on both the normal and the flaring branch. This indicates that Cir X-1 is similar to GX 5-1 and Cyg X-2 on the horizontal branch, but is different from them on the normal branch. We briefly discuss the mechanism of the time lags in the context of Comptonization models.

Spectral State Transitions in Aql X-1: Evidence for `Propeller' Effects

Aql X-1 is a soft X-ray transient source and emits type I X-ray bursts. A spectral state transition was observed with RXTE during its outburst decay in February and March 1997. Its 10-30 keV and 5-10 keV count rate ratio increased suddenly when its luminosity was between (4-12) E35 ergs/s, assuming a 2.5 kpc distance. Spectral fitting with a model composed of a blackbody and a power-law components showed that its blackbody component decreased and the power-law became much harder significantly and simultaneously. We interpret this transition as caused by the centrifugal barrier, or commonly known as the `propeller' effect. We thus infer that the magnetic field strength of the neutron star is around 1E8 Gauss, if the neutron star spin period is 1.8 ms. Similarly we infer the neutron star magnetic field strength in another soft X-ray transient Cen X-4 is about 2E9 Gauss. We also propose a unified scheme for spectral state transitions in soft X-ray transients, from soft high state to hard low state and further to quiescent state. With this scheme accretion onto neutron star may take place even during the propeller regime.

Kilo-hertz QPO in Island State of 4U1608-52 as Observed with RXTE/PCA

We report RXTE/PCA observations of 4U 1608-52 on March 15, 18 and 22 immediately after the outburst in early 1996. The persistent count rates ranged from 190 to 450 cps (1-60 keV). During this period of time, 4U 1608-52 was in the island state. We detected QPO features in the power density spectra (PDS) at 567-800 Hz on March 15 and 22, with source fractional root-mean-square (rms) amplitude of 13%-17% and widths of 78-180 Hz. The average rms amplitude of these QPO features is positively correlated with the energy. Our results imply that the neutron star spin frequency is possibly between 300 Hz and 365 Hz.

Kilo-hertz QPO and X-ray Bursts in 4U 1608-52 in Low Intensity State

We present the results from RXTE/PCA observations of 4U 1608-52 in its island state on March 15, 18 and 22 of 1996. Three type I X-ray bursts were detected in one RXTE orbit on March 22. We observed QPO features peaking at 567-800 Hz on March 15 and 22, with source fractional rms amplitude of 13%-17% and widths of 78-180 Hz in the power density spectra averaged over each spacecraft orbit. The rms amplitudes of these QPOs are positively correlated with the photon energy. The three X-ray bursts, with burst intervals of 16 and 8 minutes, have a duration of 16s. The blackbody emission region of the smallest X-ray burst among the three suggest it was a local nuclear burning. We also discuss a type I X-ray burst candidate in the observation.
