Extreme BAL Quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has discovered a population of broad absorption line quasars with various extreme properties. Many show absorption from metastable states of FeII with varying excitations; several objects are almost completely absorbed bluewards of MgII; at least one shows stronger absorption from FeIII than FeII, indicating temperatures T>35000 K in the absorbing region; and one object even seems to have broad H-beta absorption. Many of these extreme BALs are also heavily reddened, though `normal' BALs (particularly LoBALs) from SDSS also show evidence for internal reddening.

Evidence for an accelerating wind as the broad-line region in NGC 3516

Spectroscopic data in wavelengths 900--3000A have been obtained in a low flux state of the nucleus of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516. The line profiles show P Cygni characteristics, particularly in O VI 1032A, and are compared with data from an earlier higher state. The profiles are suggestive of, and consistent with, an accelerating wind driven by a disk continuum source, in which the ionisation radii have changed. This scenario may apply to the formation of other broad emission lines in AGN.

First Results from the X-ray and Optical Survey of the Chandra Deep Field South

We present our first results from 130 ks of X-ray observations obtained with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We reach a flux of 2 X 10^(-16) erg s^(-1) cm^(-2) in the 0.5-2 keV soft band and 2 X 10^(-15) erg s^(-1) cm^(-2) in the 2-10 keV hard band. For the optical identification we carried out a survey in VRI with the FORS-1 imaging-spectrometer on the ANTU telescope (UT-1 at VLT) complete to R <= 26. This dataset was complemented with data from the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS) in the UBJK bands and the ESO Wide Field Imager Survey (WFI) in the B band. The positional accuracy of the X-ray detections is of order of 1'' in the central 6'. Optical identifications are found for ~90% of the sources. We obtain the cumulative spectra of the faint and bright X-ray sources in the sample. A power law fit in the range 2-10 keV using the galactic value of N_H ~ 8 x 10^(19) cm^(-2), yields a photon index of Gamma = 1.70+-0.06 and 1.35+-0.10 for the bright and faint sample respectively, showing a flattening of the spectrum at lower fluxes. We discuss the LogN-LogS relationship and the discrete source contribution to the integrated X-ray sky flux. In the soft band, the sources now detected at fluxes below 10^(-15) erg s^(-1) cm^(-2) contribute (4.0 +- 0.3) X 10^(-12) erg cm^(-2)s^(-1) deg^(-2) to the total XRB. The flux resolved in the hard band down to the flux limit of 2 X 10^(-15) erg s^(-1) cm^(-2) now contributes a total of 1.6 X 10^(-11) erg cm^(-2) s^(-1) deg^(-2) which amounts to a fraction of 60-80% of the total measured background. This result confirms that the XRB is due to the integrated contribution of discrete sources, but shows that there is still a relevant fraction (at least 20%) of the hard XRB to be resolved at fluxes below 10^(-15) erg s^(-1) cm^(-2). Chandra Grating Spectroscopy of the Seyfert Galaxy Ton S180

This paper presents results from spectral observations of Ton S180 using Chandra and ASCA. The data confirm the presence of the soft excess but the Chandra LETG spectrum reveals it to be broad and smooth, rather than resolved into individual emission lines. This excess may represent either a primary or reprocessed continuum component or a blend of broad lines from an ionized accretion disk. The occurrence of a similar feature in five other NLSy1s leads us to conclude that this soft X-ray component may be a characteristic of sources accreting at a very high rate. The X-ray spectrum shows no evidence for absorption lines, indicating that if gas exists in the line-of-sight then it is in a very high ionization-state or has an extremely broad velocity distribution. The new ASCA data confirm that the narrow component of the Fe Kalpha line peaks close to a rest-energy of 7 keV, indicating the presence of a significant amount of highly-ionized material in the nuclear environs.

A Possible Evolutionary Connection between AGN and Starburst in LINERs

Our analysis on the two magnitude-limited samples of LINERs suggests a correlation between $L_{\FIR}/L_{\B}$ or f(25\micron)/f(60\micron), and Hubble-type index at $>$99.99% significance level. As $L_{\FIR}/L_{\B}$ and f(25\micron)/f(60\micron) are considered as the indicators of star-formation activity and AGN activity, respectively, our result suggests that LINERs with higher AGN activity may have a lower star-formation contribution. The ones with highest AGN activity and lowest star-formation contributions are ellipticals. All well-studied LINER 1s belong to this group. On the other hand, LINERs with higher star-formation activity present lower AGN contributions. We find all well-studied LINER 2s in this parameter space. Most of LINERs having inner ring structures belong to this group. Statistics with other indicators of star-formation or AGN activity (nulear mass-to-light ratio at H band, and the ratio of X-ray-to-UV power) provide further evidence for such a trend. We have seen that along with the evolution of galaxies from late-type spirals to early-type ones, and up to ellipticals, the intensity of AGN activity increases with decreasing star-formation contributions, The above analyses may suggest a possible connection between the host galaxies and nuclear activities, and it might also indicate a possible evolutionary connection between AGN and starburst in LINERs.

Extreme Galactic-Winds and Starburst in IR Mergers and IR QSOs

We report -as a part of a long-term study of mergers and IR QSOs- detailed spectroscopic evidences for outflow (OF) and/or Wolf Rayet features in: (i) low velocity OF in the ongoing mergers NGC 4038/39 and IRAS 23128-5919; (ii) extreme velocity OF (EVOF) in the QSOs IRAS 01003-2238 and IRAS 13218+0552; (iii) OF and EVOF in a complete sample of ultra-luminous IR galaxies/QSOs ("The IRAS 1 Jy MKO-KPNO Survey", of 118 objects). We found EVOF in IRAS 11119+3257, 14394+5332, 15130+1958 and 15462-0450. The OF components detected in these objects were mainly associated to starburst processes: i.e., to galactic-winds generated in multiple type II SN explosions and massive stars. The EVOF were detected in objects with strong starburst plus obscured IR QSOs; which suggest that interaction of both processes could generate EVOF. In addition, we analyze the presence of Wolf Rayet features in the large sample of Bright PG-QSOs (Boroson and Green 1992), and nearby mergers and galactic-wind galaxies. We found clear WR features in the Fe II QSOs (type I): PG 1244+026, 1444+407, 1448+273, 1535+547; and in the IR merger Arp 220. HST archive images of IR+BAL QSOs show in practically all of these objects "arc or shell" features probably associated to galactic-winds (i.e., to multiple type II SN explosions) and/or merger processes. Finally, we discuss the presence of extreme starburst and galactic wind as a possible evolutive link between IR merger and IR QSOs; where the relation between mergers and extreme starburst (with powerful galactic-winds) plays in important role, in the evolution of galaxies.

Five High-Redshift Quasars Discovered in Commissioning Imaging Data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

We report the discovery of five quasars with redshifts of 4.67 - 5.27 and z'-band magnitudes of 19.5-20.7 M_B ~ -27. All were originally selected as distant quasar candidates in optical/near-infrared photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and most were confirmed as probable high-redshift quasars by supplementing the SDSS data with J and K measurements. The quasars possess strong, broad Lyman-alpha emission lines, with the characteristic sharp cutoff on the blue side produced by Lyman-alpha forest absorption. Three quasars contain strong, broad absorption features, and one of them exhibits very strong N V emission. The amount of absorption produced by the Lyman-alpha forest increases toward higher redshift, and that in the z=5.27 object (D_A ~ 0.7) is consistent with a smooth extrapolation of the absorption seen in lower redshift quasars. The high luminosity of these objects relative to most other known objects at z >~ 5 makes them potentially valuable as probes of early quasar properties and of the intervening intergalactic medium.

FUSE Observations of Intrinsic Absorption in the Seyfert 1 Galaxy Mrk 509

We present far-ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509 obtained in 1999 November with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Our data span the observed wavelength range 915-1185 A at a resolution of ~20 km/s. The spectrum shows a blue continuum, broad OVI 1032,1038 emission, and a broad CIII 977 emission line. Superposed on these emission components, we resolve associated absorption lines of OVI 1032,1038, CIII 977, and Lyman lines through Lzeta. Seven distinct kinematic components are present, spanning a velocity range of -440 to +170 km/s relative to the systemic velocity. The absorption is clustered in two groups, one centered at -370m km/s and another at the systemic velocity. The blue-shifted cluster may be associated with the extended line emission visible in deep images of Mrk 509 obtained by Phillips et al. Although several components appear to be saturated, they are not black at their centers. Partial covering or scattering permits ~7% of the broad-line or continuum flux to be unaffected by absorption. Of the multiple components, only one has the same ionization state and column density as highly ionized gas that produces the OVII and OVIII ionization edges in X-ray spectra of Mrk 509. This paper will appear in a special issue of Astrophysical Journal Letters devoted to the first scientific results from the FUSE mission.

Evidence for an energy scale for quasiparticle dispersion in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8

Quasiparticle dispersion in $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8}$ is investigated with improved angular resolution as a function of temperature and doping. Unlike the linear dispersion predicted by the band calculation, the data show a sharp break in dispersion at $50\pm10$ $meV$ binding energy where the velocity changes by a factor of two or more. This change provides an energy scale in the quasiparticle self-energy. This break in dispersion is evident at and away from the d-wave node line, but the magnitude of the dispersion change decreases with temperature and with increasing doping.

The Ultraviolet Peak of the Energy Distribution in 3C~273: Evidence for an Accretion Disk and Hot Corona Around a Massive Black Hole

We present absolutely calibrated FUV spectra of the quasar 3C~273 covering 900- 1800 A. Our ~3 A resolution spectra were obtained with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope during the Astro-1 mission in December 1990 and during the Astro-2 mission in March 1995. Both spectra exhibit a change in slope near the Lyman limit in the quasar rest frame. At longer UV wavelengths, the continuum has a power-law index of 0.5-0.7, while shortward of the Lyman limit it is 1.2-1.7. The energy distribution in nuf_nu therefore peaks close to the quasar Lyman limit. The short wavelength UV power law extrapolates well to match the soft X-ray excess seen in simultaneous observations with BBXRT and nearly simultaneous ROSAT observations. The general shape of the broad-band spectrum of 3C 273 is consistent with that of an optically thick accretion disk whose emergent spectrum has been Comptonized by a hot medium. Our UV spectrum is well described by a Schwarzschild black hole of 7e8 Msun accreting matter at a rate of 13 Msun/yr through a disk inclined at 60 degrees. Superposed on the intrinsic disk spectrum is an empirically determined Lyman edge of optical depth 0.5. The Comptonizing medium has a Compton parameter y~1, an optical depth to electron scattering of unity, and a temperature of 4e8 K. This overall shape is the same as that found by Zheng et al. and Laor et al. in their UV and X-ray composite spectra for quasars, giving physical validity to the composite spectrum approach. When combined with those results, we find that the generic ionizing continuum shape for quasars is a power law of energy index 1.7-2.2, extending from the Lyman limit to ~1 keV. The observational gap in the extreme ultraviolet for these combined data describing the quasar continuum shape is now only half a decade in frequency.

New Wolf-Rayet Galaxies with Detection of WC Stars

We report the discovery of two new Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies: Mrk~1039, and F08208$+$2816. Two broad WR bumps at 5808Å~ and 4650Å~ indicate the presence of WCE and WNL star population in all two sources. We also confirm the presenceof WR features in Mrk~35, previously detected in a different position. The observed equivalent width of the WR bump at 4650Å~ and the derived number ratios of WR/(WR$+$O) imply that star formation in these sources takes place inshort burst duration. Comparisons with the recent models of WR populations in young starbursts with the observed EW(\HeII)/EW(\CIV)/EW(WRbump) and their relative intensitie provide an indication that the stellar initial mass function in some WR galaxies might not be Salpeter-like. It is interesting to find that the luminous IRAS source, F08208$+$2816, has little dust reddening, probably because of the existence of a powerful superwind. By comparisons with other starbursts observed with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope, F08208$+$2816 as a merging system renders a chance to study the contribution from young starbursts to the UV background radiation in universe.

Far-UV Observations of NGC 4151 during the ORFEUS-SPAS II Mission

We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 on eleven occasions at 1-2 day intervals using the Berkeley spectrometer during the ORFEUS-SPAS II mission in 1996 November. The mean spectrum covers 912-1220 A at ~0.3 A resolution with a total exposure of 15,658 seconds. The mean flux at 1000 A was 4.7e-13 erg/cm^2/s/A. We identify the neutral hydrogen absorption with a number of components that correspond to the velocity distribution of \ion{H}{1} seen in our own Galaxy as well as features identified in the CIV 1549 absorption profile by Weymann et al. The main component of neutral hydrogen in NGC 4151 has a total column density of log N_HI = 18.7 +/- 1.5 cm^{-2} for a Doppler parameter b=250 +/- 50 km/s, and it covers 84 +/- 6% of the source. This is consistent with previous results obtained with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope. Other intrinsic far-UV absorption features are not resolved, but the CIII* 1176 absorption line has a significantly higher blueshift relative to NGC 4151 than the CIII 977 resonance line. This implies that the highest velocity region of the outflowing gas has the highest density. Variations in the equivalent width of the CIII* 1176 absorption line anticorrelate with continuum variations on timescales of days. For an ionization timescale <1 day, we set an upper limit of 25 pc on the distance of the absorbing gas from the central source. The OVI 1034 and HeII 1085 emission lines also vary on timescales of 1-2 days, but their response to the continuum variations is complex. For some continuum variations they show no response, while for others the response is instantaneous to the limit of our sampling interval.

A Composite HST Spectrum of Quasars

We construct a composite quasar spectrum from 284 HST FOS spectra of 101 quasars with redshifts z > 0.33. The spectrum covers the wavelengths between 350 and 3000 A in the rest frame. There is a significant steepening of the continuum slope around 1050 A. The continuum between 1050 and 2200 A can be modeled as a power law with alpha = -0.99. For the full sample the power-law index in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) between 350 and 1050 A is alpha = -1.96. The continuum flux in the wavelengths near the Lyman limit shows a depression of about 10 percent. The break in the power-law index and the slight depression of the continuum near the Lyman limit are features expected in Comptonized accretion-disk spectra.

HUT Observations of the Lyman Limit in AGN: Implications for Unified Models

We observed a total of 13 low-redshift AGN with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT) during the course of the Astro-1 and Astro-2 missions. Of these, 4 show intrinsic Lyman limit absorption---NGC 1068, NGC 4151, NGC 3516 and NGC 3227. All galaxies with optically thick Lyman limits have extended narrow-line regions with bi-polar morphologies. All AGN with no absorption are Seyfert 1's with compact NLR's. These observations support geometrical shadowing as the means for collimating the ionizing radiation in unified models of AGN, most likely in a photoionized atmosphere above the obscuring torus.

Far-Ultraviolet Observations of NGC 3516 using the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope

We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516 twice during the flight of Astro-2 using the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope in March 1995. Simultaneous X-ray observations were performed with ASCA. Our far-ultraviolet spectra cover the spectral range 820-1840 A with a resolution of 2-4 A. No significant variations were found between the two observations. The total spectrum shows a red continuum, $f_ν\sim ν^{-1.89}$, with an observed flux of $\rm 2.2 \times 10^{-14}~erg~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}~Å^{-1}$ at 1450 A, slightly above the historical mean. Intrinsic absorption in Lyman $β$ is visible as well as absorption from O~vi 1032,1038, N~v 1239,1243, Si~iv 1394,1403, and C~iv 1548,1551. The UV absorption lines are far weaker than is usual for NGC~3516, and also lie closer to the emission line redshift rather than showing the blueshift typical of these lines when they are strong. The neutral hydrogen absorption, however, is blueshifted by $400~\rm km~s^{-1}$ relative to the systemic velocity, and it is opaque at the Lyman limit. The sharpness of the cutoff indicates a low effective Doppler parameter, $b < \rm 20~km~s^{-1}$. For $b = \rm 10~km~s^{-1}$ the derived intrinsic column is $\rm 3.5 \times 10^{17}~cm^{-2}$. As in NGC~4151, a single warm absorber cannot produce the strong absorption visible over the wide range of observed ionization states. Matching both the UV and X-ray absorption simultaneously requires absorbers spanning a range of $10^3$ in both ionization parameter and column density.

ASCA Observations of the Composite Warm Absorber in NGC 3516

We obtained X-ray spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC~3516 in March 1995 using ASCA. Simultaneous far-UV observations were obtained with HUT on the Astro-2 shuttle mission. The ASCA spectrum shows a lightly absorbed power law of energy index 0.78. The low energy absorbing column is significantly less than previously seen. Prominent O~vii and O~viii absorption edges are visible, but, consistent with the much lower total absorbing column, no Fe K absorption edge is detectable. A weak, narrow Fe~K$α$ emission line from cold material is present as well as a broad Fe~K$α$ line. These features are similar to those reported in other Seyfert 1 galaxies. A single warm absorber model provides only an imperfect description of the low energy absorption. In addition to a highly ionized absorber with ionization parameter $U = 1.66$ and a total column density of $1.4 \times 10^{22}~\rm cm^{-2}$, adding a lower ionization absorber with $U = 0.32$ and a total column of $6.9 \times 10^{21}~\rm cm^{-2}$ significantly improves the fit. The contribution of resonant line scattering to our warm absorber models limits the Doppler parameter to $< 160~\rm km~s^{-1}$ at 90\% confidence. Turbulence at the sound speed of the photoionized gas provides the best fit. None of the warm absorber models fit to the X-ray spectrum can match the observed equivalent widths of all the UV absorption lines. Accounting for the X-ray and UV absorption simultaneously requires an absorbing region with a broad range of ionization parameters and column densities.

Truncated eigenvalue equation and long wavelength behavior of lattice gauge theory

We review our new method, which might be the most direct and efficient way for approaching the continuum physics from Hamiltonian lattice gauge theory. It consists of solving the eigenvalue equation with a truncation scheme preserving the continuum limit. The efficiency has been confirmed by the observations of the scaling behaviors for the long wavelength vacuum wave functions and mass gaps in (2+1)-dimensional models and (1+1)-dimensional $σ$ model even at very low truncation orders. Most of these results show rapid convergence to the available Monte Carlo data, ensuring the reliability of our method.
