Evidence of s-wave superconductivity in the noncentrosymmetric La$_7$Ir$_3$

Superconductivity in noncentrosymmetric compounds has attracted sustained interest in the last decades. Here we present a detailed study on the transport, thermodynamic properties and the band structure of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor La$_7$Ir$_3$ ($T_c$ $\sim$2.3 K) that was recently proposed to break the time-reversal symmetry. It is found that La$_7$Ir$_3$ displays a moderately large electronic heat capacity (Sommerfeld coefficient $γ_n$ $\sim$ 53.1 mJ/mol $\text{K}^2$) and a significantly enhanced Kadowaki-Woods ratio (KWR $\sim$ 32 $μΩ$ cm mol$^2$ K$^2$ J$^{-2}$) that is greater than the typical value ($\sim$ 10 $μΩ$ cm mol$^2$ K$^2$ J$^{-2}$) for strongly correlated electron systems. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ was seen to be nicely described by the single-band Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model down to very low temperatures. The hydrostatic pressure effects on the superconductivity were also investigated. The heat capacity below $T_c$ reveals a dominant s-wave gap with the magnitude close to the BCS value. The first-principles calculations yield the electron-phonon coupling constant $λ$ = 0.81 and the logarithmically averaged frequency $ω_{ln}$ = 78.5 K, resulting in a theoretical $T_c$ = 2.5 K, close to the experimental value. Our calculations suggest that the enhanced electronic heat capacity is more likely due to electron-phonon coupling, rather than the electron-electron correlation effects. Collectively, these results place severe constraints on any theory of exotic superconductivity in this system.

Van der Waals and resonance interactions between accelerated atoms in vacuum and the Unruh effect

We discuss different physical effects related to the uniform acceleration of atoms in vacuum, in the framework of quantum electrodynamics. We first investigate the van der Waals/Casimir-Polder dispersion and resonance interactions between two uniformly accelerated atoms in vacuum. We show that the atomic acceleration significantly affects the van der Waals force, yielding a different scaling of the interaction with the interatomic distance and an explicit time dependence of the interaction energy. We argue how these results could allow for an indirect detection of the Unruh effect through dispersion interactions between atoms. We then consider the resonance interaction between two accelerated atoms, prepared in a correlated Bell-type state, and interacting with the electromagnetic field in the vacuum state, separating vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction contributions, both in the free-space and in the presence of a perfectly reflecting plate. We show that nonthermal effects of acceleration manifest in the resonance interaction, yielding a change of the distance dependence of the resonance interaction energy. This suggests that the equivalence between temperature and acceleration does not apply to all radiative properties of accelerated atoms. To further explore this aspect, we evaluate the resonance interaction between two atoms in non inertial motion in the coaccelerated (Rindler) frame and show that in this case the assumption of an Unruh temperature for the field is not required for a complete equivalence of locally inertial and coaccelerated points of views.

Enhanced electron correlations in the new binary stannide PdSn4: a homologue of the Dirac nodal arc semimetal PtSn4

The advent of nodal-line semi-metals, i.e. systems in which the conduction and valence bands cross each other along a closed trajectory (line or loop) inside the Brillouin zone, has opened up a new arena for the exploration of topological condensed matter in which, due to a vanishing density of states near the Fermi level, electron correlation effects may also play an important role. In spite of this conceptual richness however, material realization of nodal-line (loop) fermions is rare, with PbTaSe2, ZrSiS and PtSn4 the only promising known candidates. Here we report the synthesis and physical properties of a new compound PdSn4 that is isostructural with PtSn4 yet possesses quasiparticles with significantly enhanced effective masses. In addition, PdSn4 displays an unusual polar angular magnetoresistance which at a certain field orientation, varies linearly with field up to 55 Tesla. Our study suggests that, in association with its homologue PtSn4 whose low-lying excitations were recently claimed to possess Dirac node arcs, PdSn4 may be a promising candidate in the search for novel topological states with enhanced correlation effects.

Topological Phase Transition Under Pressure in the Topological Nodal Line Superconductor PbTaSe$_2$

A first-order-like resistivity hysteresis is induced by a subtle structural transition under hydrostatic pressure in the topological nodal-line superconductor PbTaSe$_2$. This structure transition is quickly suppressed to zero at pressure $\sim$0.25 GPa. As a result, superconductivity shows a marked suppression, accompanied with fundamental changes in the magnetoresistance and Hall resistivity, suggesting a Lifshitz transition around $\sim$0.25 GPa. The first principles calculations show that the spin-orbit interactions partially gap out the Dirac nodal line around $K$ point in the Brillouin zone upon applying a small pressure, whilst the Dirac states around $H$ point are completely destroyed. The calculations further reveal a second structural phase transition under a pressure as high as $\sim$30 GPa, through which a transition from a topologically nontrivial phase to a trivial phase is uncovered, with a superconducting dome emerging under this high-pressure phase.

Resonant Magnetization Switching Conditions of an Exchange-coupled Bilayer under Spin Wave Excitation

We systematically investigated the spin wave-assisted magnetization switching (SWAS) of a L10-FePt / Ni81Fe19 (Permalloy; Py) exchange-coupled bilayer using a pulse-like rf field (hrf) and mapped the switching events in the magnetic field (H) - hrf frequency (f) plane to reveal the switching conditions. The switching occurred only in a limited region following the dispersion relationship of the perpendicular standing spin wave (PSSW) modes in Py. The results indicate that SWAS is a resonant magnetization switching process, which is different from the conventional microwave assisted switching, and has the potential to be applied to selective switching for multilevel recording media.

Observation of the anisotropic Dirac cone in the band dispersion of 112-structured iron-based superconductor Ca0.9La0.1FeAs2

CaFeAs2 is a parent compound of recently discovered 112-type iron-based superconductors. It is predicted to be a staggered intercalation compound that naturally integrates both quantum spin Hall insulating and superconducting layers and an ideal system for the realization of Majorana modes. We performed a systematical angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principle calculation study of the slightly electron-doped CaFeAs2. We found that the zigzag As chain of 112-type iron-based superconductors play a considerable role in the low-energy electronic structure, resulting in the characteristic Dirac-cone like band dispersion as the prediction. Our experimental results further confirm that these Dirac cones only exists around the X but not Y points in the Brillouin zone, breaking the S4 symmetry at iron sites. Our findings present the compelling support to the theoretical prediction that the 112-type iron-based superconductors might host the topological nontrivial edge states. The slightly electron doped CaFeAs2 would provide us a unique opportunity to realize and explore Majorana fermion physics.

Anomalous carrier density independent superconductivity in iron pnictides

Dome-shape superconductivity phase diagram can commonly be observed in cuprate and iron-based systems via tuning parameters such as charge carrier doping, pressure, bond angle, and etc. We report doping electrons from transition-metal elements (TM = Co, Ni) substitution can induce high-Tc superconductivity around 35 K in Ca0.94La0.06Fe2As2, which emerges abruptly before the total suppression of the innate spin-density-wave/anti-ferromagnetism (SDW/AFM) state. Unexpectedly, the onset critical temperature for the high-Tc superconductivity stays constant for a wide range of TM doping. Possible extrinsic factors like phase separation, chemical inhomogeneity, and charge carrier cancelation effect are all excluded. This anomalous charge carrier density independent SC is very similar to the interface superconductivity in La2-xSrxCuO4-La2CuO4 bilayer system. The further verified two-dimensional (2D) nature of superconductivity by the Tinkham's angular-dependent critical field model as well as by the angle-resolved magneto-resistance measurements jointly supports the idea of interfacial effect induced high-Tc superconductivity.

Possible Phase Separation and Transport Properties in Large Superconducting Ca0.77La0.18Fe0.90As2 Crystals

We synthesized large superconducting single crystal Ca0.77La0.18Fe0.90As2 ('112' type) of 2 millimeter size. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements revealed that bright and dark stripes alternately spread on the surface of crystals, indicating possible existence of intrinsic phase separation. Temperature (T) -dependent resistivity, Hall effect and magneto-resistance (MR) were measured with magnetic field (H) applied to different directions of crystal. The upper critical field (Hc2) anisotropy was estimated with a moderate value around 2.8. Positive Hall coefficient (RH) and anisotropic MR were found and showed strong T-dependent feature. Below T about 100 K, abnormal behaviors appear simultaneously in resistivity derivative, Hall coefficient and MR, which indicates that other scattering mechanisms more than conventional multiband effect may exist.

Anisotropy of iron-platinum-arsenide Ca10(PtnAs8)(Fe2-xPtxAs2)5 single crystals

The upper critical field Hc2 anisotropy of Ca10(PtnAs8)(Fe2-xPtxAs2)5 (n = 3, 4) single crystals with long FeAs interlayer distance (d) was studied by angular dependent resistivity measurements. A scaling of the angular dependent resistivity was realized for both single crystals using the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (AGL) approach with an appropriate anisotropy parameter γ. The AGL scaling parameter γ increases with decreasing temperature and reaches a value of about 10 at 0.8Tc for both single crystals. These values are much larger than those of other iron-based superconductors (FeSCs). Remarkably, the values of γ2 show an almost linear increase with the FeAs/FeSe interlayer distance d for FeSCs. Compared to cuprates, FeSCs are less anisotropic, indicating that two dimensionality of the superconductivity is intrinsically weak.

Exciton splitting in semiconducting carbon nanotubes in ultrahigh magnetic fields above 300 T

In high magnetic fields, the exciton absorption spectrum of a semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube splits as a result of Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux. A magnetic field of 370 T, generated by the electro-magnetic flux compression destructive pulsed magnet-coil technique, was applied to single-chirality semiconducting carbon nanotubes. Using streak spectroscopy, we demonstrated the separation of the independent band-edge exciton states at the K and K' points of the Brillouin zone after the mixing of the dark and bright states above 150 T. These results enable a quantitative discussion of the whole picture of the Aharonov-Bohm effect in single-walled carbon nanotubes.

Significant contribution of As 4p orbitals to the low-lying electronic structure of 112-type iron-based superconductor Ca0.9La0.1FeAs2

We report a systematic polarization-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the three-dimensional electronic structure of the recently discovered 112-type iron-based superconductor Ca1-xLaxFeAs2 (x = 0.1). Besides the commonly reported three hole-like and two electron-like bands in iron-based superconductors, we resolve one additional hole-like band around the zone center and one more fast-dispersing band near the X point in the vicinity of Fermi level. By tuning the polarization and the energy of incident photons,we are able to identify the specific orbital characters and the kz dependence of all bands. Combining with band calculations, we find As 4pz and 4px (4py) orbitals contribute significantly to the additional three-dimensional hole-like band and the narrow band, respectively. Also, there are considerable hybridization between the As 4p zand Fe 3d orbitals in the additional hole-like band, which suggests the strong coupling between the unique arsenic zigzag bond layers and the FeAs layers therein. Our findings provide a comprehensive picture of the orbital characters of the low-lying band structure of 112-type iron-based superconductors, which can be a starting point for the further understanding of their unconventional superconductivity.

Annealing Effect on Microstructure and Superconductivity of KxFeySe2 Synthesized by an Easy One-step Method

High-quality superconducting KxFeySe2 single crystals were synthesized using an easy one-step method. Detailed annealing studies were performed to make clear the phase formation process in KxFeySe2. Compatible observations were found in temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction patterns, back-scattered electron images and corresponding electromagnetic properties, which proved that good superconductivity performance was close related to the microstructure of superconducting component. Analysis based on the scaling behavior of flux pinning force indicated that the dominant pinning mechanism was delta(Tc) pinning and independent of connectivity. The annealing dynamics studies were also performed, which manifested that the humps in temperature-dependent resistance (RT) curves were induced by competition between the metallic/superconducting and the semiconducting/insulating phases.

Coexistence of two superconducting phases in Ca1-xLaxFe2As2

Single crystals of Ca1-xLaxFe2As2 for x ranging from 0 to 0.25 have been grown and characterized by structural, transport and magnetic measurements. Coexistence of two superconducting phases is observed, in which the low superconducting transition temperature (Tc) phase has Tc ~ 20 K, and the high Tc phase has Tc higher than 40 K. These data also delineate an x - T phase diagram in which the single magnetic/structural phase transition in undoped CaFe2As2 appears to split into two distinct phase transitions, both of which are suppressed with increasing La substitution. Superconductivity emerges when x is about 0.06 and coexists with the structural/magnetic transition until x is ~ 0.13. With increasing concentration of La, the structural/magnetic transition is totally suppressed, and Tc reaches its maximum value of about 45 K for 0.15 < x < 0.19. A domelike superconducting region is not observed in the phase diagram, however, because no obvious over-doping region can be found. Two superconducting phases coexist in the x - T phase diagram of Ca1-xLaxFe2As2. The formation of the two separate phases, as well as the origin of the high Tc in Ca1-xLaxFe2As2 is studied and discussed in detail.

Upper Critical Fields and Anisotropy of Ca1-xLaxFe2As2 Single Crystals

Superconductivity of Ca1-xLaxFe2As2 single crystals with various doping level were investigated via electromagnetic measurements for out-plane (H//c) and in-plane (H//ab) directions. Obvious double superconducting transitions, which can survive in magnetic fields up to several Tesla, were observed in the medium-doped (x = 0.13) sample. Two kinds of distinct Hc2 phase diagrams were established for the low superconducting phase with Tc lower than 15 K and the high superconducting phase with Tc of over 40 K, respectively. Both the two kinds of phase diagrams exist in the medium-doped sample. Unusual upward curvature near Tc was observed in Hc2 phase diagrams and analyzed in detail. Temperature dependences of anisotropy for different doping concentrations were obtained and compared. Both superconducting phases manifest extremely large anisotropies, which may originate from the interface or intercalation superconductivity.

Magnetic phase transition in V2O3 nanocrystals

V2O3 nanocrystals can be synthesized through hydrothermal reduction of VO(OH)2 using hydrazine as a reducing agent. Addition of different ligands to the reaction produces nanoparticles, nanorods and nanoplatelets of different sizes. Small nanoparticles synthesized in this manner show suppression of the magnetic phase transition to lower temperatures. Using muon spin relaxation spectroscopy and synchrotron x-ray diffraction, it is determined that the volume fraction of the high-temperature phase, characterized by a rhombohedral structure and paramagnetism, gradually declines with decreasing temperature, in contrast to the sharp transition observed in bulk V2O3.

SrRietveld: A program for automating Rietveld refinements for high throughput powder diffraction studies

SrRietveld is a highly automated software toolkit for Rietveld refinement. Compared to traditional refinement programs, it is more efficient to use and easier to learn. It is designed for modern high throughput diffractometers and capable of processing large numbers of data-sets with minimal effort. The new software currently uses conventional Rietveld refinement engines, automating GSAS and FullProf refinements. However, as well as automating and extending many tasks associated with these programs, it is designed in a flexible and extensible way so that in the future these engines can be replaced with new refinement engines as they become available. SrRietveld is an open source software package developed in Python.
