The NANOGrav Nine-year Data Set: Observations, Arrival Time Measurements, and Analysis of 37 Millisecond Pulsars

We present high-precision timing observations spanning up to nine years for 37 millisecond pulsars monitored with the Green Bank and Arecibo radio telescopes as part of the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) project. We describe the observational and instrumental setups used to collect the data, and methodology applied for calculating pulse times of arrival; these include novel methods for measuring instrumental offsets and characterizing low signal-to-noise ratio timing results. The time of arrival data are fit to a physical timing model for each source, including terms that characterize time-variable dispersion measure and frequency-dependent pulse shape evolution. In conjunction with the timing model fit, we have performed a Bayesian analysis of a parameterized timing noise model for each source, and detect evidence for excess low-frequency, or "red," timing noise in 10 of the pulsars. For 5 of these cases this is likely due to interstellar medium propagation effects rather than intrisic spin variations. Subsequent papers in this series will present further analysis of this data set aimed at detecting or limiting the presence of nanohertz-frequency gravitational wave signals.

Spitzer Microlens Measurement of a Massive Remnant in a Well-Separated Binary

We report the detection and mass measurement of a binary lens OGLE-2015-BLG-1285La,b, with the more massive component having $M_1>1.35\,M_\odot$ (80% probability). A main-sequence star in this mass range is ruled out by limits on blue light, meaning that a primary in this mass range must be a neutron star or black hole. The system has a projected separation $r_\perp= 6.1\pm 0.4\,{\rm AU}$ and lies in the Galactic bulge. These measurements are based on the "microlens parallax" effect, i.e., comparing the microlensing light curve as seen from $Spitzer$, which lay at $1.25\,{\rm AU}$ projected from Earth, to the light curves from four ground-based surveys, three in the optical and one in the near infrared. Future adaptive optics imaging of the companion by 30m class telescopes will yield a much more accurate measurement of the primary mass. This discovery both opens the path and defines the challenges to detecting and characterizing black holes and neutron stars in wide binaries, with either dark or luminous companions. In particular, we discuss lessons that can be applied to future $Spitzer$ and $Kepler$ K2 microlensing parallax observations.

Interaction-driven fractional quantum Hall state of hard-core bosons on kagome lattice at one-third filling

There has been a growing interest in realizing topologically nontrivial states of matter in band insulators, where a quantum Hall effect can appear as an intrinsic property of the band structure. While the on-going progress is under way with a number of directions, the possibility of realizing novel interaction-generated topological phases, without the requirement of a nontrivial invariant encoded in single-particle wavefunction or band structure, can significantly extend the class of topological materials and is thus of great importance. Here, we show an interaction-driven topological phase emerging in an extended Bose-Hubbard model on kagome lattice, where the non-interacting band structure is topological trivial with zero Berry curvature in the Brillouin zone. By means of an unbiased state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group technique, we identify that the groundstate in a broad parameter region is equivalent to a bosonic fractional quantum Hall Laughlin state, based on the characterization of universal properties including groundstate degeneracy, edge excitations and anyonic quasiparticle statistics. Our work paves a way of finding interaction induced topological phase at the phase boundary of conventionally ordered solid phases.

Spitzer IRAC Photometry for Time Series in Crowded Fields

We develop a new photometry algorithm that is optimized for $Spitzer$ time series in crowded fields and that is particularly adapted to faint and/or heavily blended targets. We apply this to the 170 targets from the 2015 $Spitzer$ microlensing campaign and present the results of three variants of this algorithm in an online catalog. We present detailed accounts of the application of this algorithm to two difficult cases, one very faint and the other very crowded. Several of $Spitzer$'s instrumental characteristics that drive the specific features of this algorithm are shared by $Kepler$ and $WFIRST$, implying that these features may prove to be a useful starting point for algorithms designed for microlensing campaigns by these other missions.

Topological Characterization of Non-Abelian Moore-Read State using Density-Matrix Renormailzation Group

The non-Abelian topological order has attracted a lot of attention for its fundamental importance and exciting prospect of topological quantum computation. However, explicit demonstration or identification of the non-Abelian states and the associated statistics in a microscopic model is very challenging. Here, based on density-matrix renormalization group calculation, we provide a complete characterization of the universal properties of bosonic Moore-Read state on Haldane honeycomb lattice model at filling number $ν=1$ for larger systems, including both the edge spectrum and the bulk anyonic quasiparticle (QP) statistics. We first demonstrate that there are three degenerating ground states, for each of which there is a definite anyonic flux threading through the cylinder. We identify the nontrivial countings for the entanglement spectrum in accordance with the corresponding conformal field theory. Through inserting the $U(1)$ charge flux, it is found that two of the ground states can be adiabatically connected through a fermionic charge-$\textit{e}$ QP being pumped from one edge to the other, while the ground state in Ising anyon sector evolves back to itself. Furthermore, we calculate the modular matrices $\mathcal{S}$ and $\mathcal{U}$, which contain all the information for the anyonic QPs. In particular, the extracted quantum dimensions, fusion rule and topological spins from modular matrices positively identify the emergence of non-Abelian statistics following the $SU(2)_2$ Chern-Simons theory.

The Fractional Quantum Hall States at $ν=13/5$ and $12/5$ and their Non-Abelian Nature

We investigate the nature of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state at filling factor $ν=13/5$, and its particle-hole conjugate state at $12/5$, with the Coulomb interaction, and address the issue of possible competing states. Based on a large-scale density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation in spherical geometry, we present evidence that the physics of the Coulomb ground state (GS) at $ν=13/5$ and $12/5$ is captured by the $k=3$ parafermion Read-Rezayi RR state, $\text{RR}_3$. We first establish that the state at $ν=13/5$ is an incompressible FQH state, with a GS protected by a finite excitation gap, with the shift in accordance with the RR state. Then, by performing a finite-size scaling analysis of the GS energies for $ν=12/5$ with different shifts, we find that the $\text{RR}_3$ state has the lowest energy among different competing states in the thermodynamic limit. We find the fingerprint of $\text{RR}_3$ topological order in the FQH $13/5$ and $12/5$ states, based on their entanglement spectrum and topological entanglement entropy, both of which strongly support their identification with the $\text{RR}_3$ state. Furthermore, by considering the shift-free infinite-cylinder geometry, we expose two topologically-distinct GS sectors, one identity sector and a second one matching the non-Abelian sector of the Fibonacci anyonic quasiparticle, which serves as additional evidence for the $\text{RR}_3$ state at $13/5$ and $12/5$.

Possible non-Abelian Moore-Read state in double-layer bosonic fractional quantum Hall system

Identifying and understanding interacting systems that can host non-Abelian topological phases with fractionalized quasiparticles have attracted intense attentions in the past twenty years. Theoretically, it is possible to realize a rich variety of such states by coupling two Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states together through gapping out part of the low energy degrees of freedom. So far, there are some indications, but no robust example has been established in bilayer systems for realizing the non-Abelian state in the past. Here, we present a phase diagram of a double-layer bosonic FQH system based on the exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, which demonstrate a potential regime with the emergence of the non-Abelian bosonic Moore-Read state. We start from the Abelian phase with fourfold topological degeneracies on torus geometry when the two layers are weakly coupled. With the increase of interlayer tunneling, we find an intermediate regime with a threefold groundstate degeneracy and a finite fractional drag Hall conductance. We find the different topological sectors in consistent with Moore-Read state by inserting different fluxes in adiabatic DMRG study. We also extract the modular $\mathcal{S}-$ matrix, which supports the emergence of the non-Abelian Ising anyon quasiparticle in this system.

Spitzer Parallax of OGLE-2015-BLG-0966: A Cold Neptune in the Galactic Disk

We report the detection of a Cold Neptune m_planet=21+/-2MEarth orbiting a 0.38MSol M dwarf lying 2.5-3.3 kpc toward the Galactic center as part of a campaign combining ground-based and Spitzer observations to measure the Galactic distribution of planets. This is the first time that the complex real-time protocols described by Yee et al. (2015), which aim to maximize planet sensitivity while maintaining sample integrity, have been carried out in practice. Multiple survey and follow-up teams successfully combined their efforts within the framework of these protocols to detect this planet. This is the second planet in the Spitzer Galactic distribution sample. Both are in the near-to-mid disk and clearly not in the Galactic bulge.

Pathway to the Galactic Distribution of Planets: Combined Spitzer and Ground-Based Microlens Parallax Measurements of 21 Single-Lens Events

We present microlens parallax measurements for 21 (apparently) isolated lenses observed toward the Galactic bulge that were imaged simultaneously from Earth and Spitzer, which was ~1 AU West of Earth in projection. We combine these measurements with a kinematic model of the Galaxy to derive distance estimates for each lens, with error bars that are small compared to the Sun's Galactocentric distance. The ensemble therefore yields a well-defined cumulative distribution of lens distances. In principle it is possible to compare this distribution against a set of planets detected in the same experiment in order to measure the Galactic distribution of planets. Since these Spitzer observations yielded only one planet, this is not yet possible in practice. However, it will become possible as larger samples are accumulated.

Chiral and Critical Spin Liquids in Spin-$1/2$ Kagome Antiferromagnet

The topological quantum spin liquids (SL) and the nature of quantum phase transitions between them have attracted intensive attentions for the past twenty years. The extended kagome spin-1/2 antiferromagnet emerges as the primary candidate for hosting both time reversal symmetry (TRS) preserving and TRS breaking SLs based on density matrix renormalization group simulations. To uncover the nature of the novel quantum phase transition between the SL states, we study a minimum XY model with the nearest neighbor (NN) ($J_{xy}$), the second and third NN couplings ($J_{2xy}=J_{3xy}=J'_{xy}$). We identify the TRS broken chiral SL (CSL) with the turn on of a small perturbation $J'_{xy}\sim 0.06 J_{xy}$, which is fully characterized by the fractionally quantized topological Chern number and the conformal edge spectrum as the $ν=1/2$ fractional quantum Hall state. On the other hand, the NN XY model ($J'_{xy}=0$) is shown to be a critical SL state adjacent to the CSL, characterized by the gapless spin singlet excitations and also vanishing small spin triplet excitations. The quantum phase transition from the CSL to the gapless critical SL is driven by the collapsing of the neutral (spin singlet) excitation gap. By following the evolution of entanglement spectrum, we find that the transition takes place through the coupling of the edge states with opposite chiralities, which merge into the bulk and become gapless neutral excitations. The effect of the NN spin-$z$ coupling $J_z$ is also studied, which leads to a quantum phase diagram with an extended regime for the gapless SL.

Spitzer as Microlens Parallax Satellite: Mass Measurement for the OGLE-2014-BLG-0124L Planet and its Host Star

We combine Spitzer and ground-based observations to measure the microlens parallax vector ${\mathbf π}_{\rm E}$, and so the mass and distance of OGLE-2014-BLG-0124L, making it the first microlensing planetary system with a space-based parallax measurement. The planet and star have masses $m \sim 0.5\,M_{\rm jup}$ and $M\sim 0.7\,M_\odot$ and are separated by $a_\perp\sim 3.1$ AU in projection. The main source of uncertainty in all these numbers (approximately 30%, 30%, and 20%) is the relatively poor measurement of the Einstein radius $θ_{\rm E}$, rather than uncertainty in $π_{\rm E}$, which is measured with 2.5% precision. This compares to 22% based on OGLE data alone, implying that the Spitzer data provide not only a substantial improvement in the precision of the $π_{\rm E}$ measurement but also the first independent test of a ground-based ${\mathbf π}_{\rm E}$ measurement.

Is $J^{PC}=3^{-+}$ molecule possible?

The confirmation of charged charmonium-like states indiates that heavy quark molecules should exist. We here discuss the possibility of a molecule state with $J^{PC}=3^{-+}$. In a one-boson-exchange model investigation for the S wave $C=+$ $D^*\bar{D}_2^*$ states, one finds that the strongest attraction is in the case $J=3$ and $I=0$ for both $π$ and $σ$ exchanges. Numerical analysis indicates that this hadronic bound state might exist if a phenomenological cutoff parameter around 2.3 GeV (1.5 GeV) is reasonable with a dipole (monopole) type form factor in the one-pion-exchange model. The cutoff for binding solutions may be reduced to a smaller value once the $σ$ exchange contribution is included. If a state around the $D^*\bar{D}_2^*$ threshold ($\approx$4472 MeV) in the channel $J/ψω$ (P wave) is observed, the heavy quark spin symmetry implies that it is not a $c\bar{c}$ meson and the $J^{PC}$ are likely to be $3^{-+}$.

Identifying Non-Abelian Topological Order through Minimal Entangled States

The topological order is equivalent to the pattern of long-range quantum entanglements, which cannot be measured by any local observable. Here we perform an exact diagonalization study to establish the non-Abelian topological order through entanglement entropy measurement. We focus on the quasiparticle statistics of the non-Abelian Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states on the lattice boson models. We identify multiple independent minimal entangled states (MESs) in the groundstate manifold on a torus. The extracted modular $\mathcal{S}$ matrix from MESs faithfully demonstrates the Majorana quasiparticle or Fibonacci quasiparticle statistics, including the quasiparticle quantum dimensions and the fusion rules for such systems. These findings support that MESs manifest the eigenstates of quasiparticles for the non-Abelian topological states and encode the full information of the topological order.

The Einstein@Home search for radio pulsars and PSR J2007+2722 discovery

Einstein@Home aggregates the computer power of hundreds of thousands of volunteers from 193 countries, to search for new neutron stars using data from electromagnetic and gravitational-wave detectors. This paper presents a detailed description of the search for new radio pulsars using Pulsar ALFA survey data from the Arecibo Observatory. The enormous computing power allows this search to cover a new region of parameter space; it can detect pulsars in binary systems with orbital periods as short as 11 minutes. We also describe the first Einstein@Home discovery, the 40.8 Hz isolated pulsar PSR J2007+2722, and provide a full timing model. PSR J2007+2722's pulse profile is remarkably wide with emission over almost the entire spin period. This neutron star is most likely a disrupted recycled pulsar, about as old as its characteristic spin-down age of 404 Myr. However there is a small chance that it was born recently, with a low magnetic field. If so, upper limits on the X-ray flux suggest but can not prove that PSR J2007+2722 is at least ~ 100 kyr old. In the future, we expect that the massive computing power provided by volunteers should enable many additional radio pulsar discoveries.

Timing and Interstellar Scattering of Thirty-five Distant Pulsars Discovered in the PALFA Survey

We have made extensive observations of 35 distant slow (non-recycled) pulsars discovered in the ongoing Arecibo PALFA pulsar survey. Timing observations of these pulsars over several years at Arecibo Observatory and Jodrell Bank Observatory have yielded high-precision positions and measurements of rotation properties. Despite being a relatively distant population, these pulsars have properties that mirror those of the previously known pulsar population. Many of the sources exhibit timing noise, and one underwent a small glitch. We have used multifrequency data to measure the interstellar scattering properties of these pulsars. We find scattering to be higher than predicted along some lines of sight, particularly in the Cygnus region. Lastly, we present XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of the youngest and most energetic of the pulsars, J1856+0245, which has previously been associated with the GeV-TeV pulsar wind nebula HESS J1857+026.

Minimal Entangled States and Modular Matrix for Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in Topological Flat Bands

We perform an exact diagonalization study of the topological order in topological flat band models through calculating entanglement entropy and spectra of low energy states. We identify multiple independent minimal entangled states, which form a set of orthogonal basis states for the ground-state manifold. We extract the modular transformation matrices S (U) which contains the information of mutual (self) statistics, quantum dimensions and fusion rule of quasi-particles. Moreover, we demonstrate that these matrices are robust and universal in the whole topological phase against different perturbations until the quantum phase transition takes place.

Pulsed Mid-infrared Radiation from Spectral Broadening in Laser Wakefield Simulations

Spectral red-shifting of high power laser pulses propagating through underdense plasma can be a source of ultrashort mid-infrared (MIR) radiation. During propagation, a high power laser pulse drives large amplitude plasma waves, depleting the pulse energy. At the same time, the large amplitude plasma wave provides a dynamic dielectric response that leads to spectral shifting. The loss of laser pulse energy and the approximate conservation of laser pulse action imply that spectral red-shifts accompany the depletion. In this paper, we investigate, through simulation, the parametric dependence of MIR generation on pulse energy, initial pulse duration, and plasma density.

Disorder-induced significant enhancement in magnetization of ball-milled Fe2CrGa alloy

A new disordered atom configuration in Fe2CrGa alloy has been created by ball-milling method. This leads to a significant enhancement of the magnetic moment up to 3.2~3.9 μB and an increase of Curie temperature by about 200 K, compared with the arc-melt samples. Combination of first-principles calculations and experimental results reveals that Fe2CrGa alloy should crystallize in Hg2CuTi based structure with different atomic disorders for the samples prepared by different methods. It is addressed that magnetic interactions play a crucial role for the system to adopt such an atomic configuration which disobeys the empirical rule.
