Nonrelativistic nucleon effective masses in nuclear matter: BHF versus RHF

The density and isospin dependences of the nonrelativistic nucleon effective mass ($m^*$) are studied, which is a measure of the nonlocality of the single particle (s.p.) potential. We decouple it further into the so called k-mass ($m^*_k$, i.e., the nonlocality in space) and E-mass ($m^*_E$, i.e., the nonlocality in time). Both masses are determined and compared from the latest versions of the nonrelativistic Brueckner-Hartree Fock (BHF) model and the relativistic Hartree-Fock (RHF) model. The latter are achieved based on the corresponding Schrödinger equivalent s.p. potential in a relativistic framework. We demonstrate the origins of different effective masses and discuss also their neutron-proton splitting in the asymmetric matter in different models. We find that the neutron-proton splittings of both the k-mass and the E-mass have the same asymmetry dependences at considered densities, namely $m^*_{k,n} > m^*_{k,p}$ and $m^*_{E,p} > m^*_{E,n}$. However, the resulting splittings of nucleon effective masses could have different asymmetry dependences in the two models, because they could be dominated either by that of the k-mass (then we have $m^*_n > m^*_p$ in the BHF model) or by that of the E-mass (then we have $m^*_p > m^*_n$ in the RHF model).

Role of nucleonic Fermi surface depletion in neutron star cooling

The Fermi surface depletion of beta-stable nuclear matter is calculated to study its effects on several physical properties which determine the neutron star thermal evolution. The neutron and proton Z factors measuring the corresponding Fermi surface depletions, are calculated within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach employing the AV18 two-body force supplemented by a microscopic three body force. Neutrino emissivity, heat capacity and, in particular, neutron 3PF2 superfluidity turn out to be reduced, especially at high baryonic density, to such an extent that the cooling rates of young neutron stars are significantly slowed

Massive hybrid stars with a first order phase transition

We develop our previous study of the transition to deconfined quark phase in neutron stars, including the interaction in the quark equation of state to the leading order in the perturbative expansion within the confinement density-dependent mass model. Using the Gibbs conditions the hadron-quark mixed phase is constructed matching the latter with the hadron equation of state derived from the microscopic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation. The influence of quark interaction parameters on threshold properties and phase diagram of dense neutron star matter are discussed in detail. We find that the leading-order quark interaction expands the density range of the mixed phase, pushing forward the disappearance of the hadron phase. Moreover, since the equation of state could turn out to be stiffer, a high-mass hybrid star is possible with mixed-phase core with typical parameter sets.

Mass predictions of superheavy nuclei from the systematics of $α$-Decay Energies

A recent proposed method for $α$-decay energies ($Q_α$) [J.M. Dong, W. Zuo, and W. Scheid, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{107}, 012501 (2011)] can reproduce experimental data of superheavy nuclei (SHN) with an $rms$-value of less than 100 keV. However, a sinusoid-like periodic deviation from experiments, which limits the accuracy in predictions, is observed when using different reference nuclei. In this paper, we have further extended this hybrid method, i.e., to predict $Q_α$ of the as-yet-unobserved SHN with the help of known nuclei. It is found that the systematic deviation in previous study is rooted in the nuclear mass model employed. By further analyzing the source of errors, different nuclear mass models are evaluated based on the same procedure.

Extended quark mean-field model for neutron stars

We extend the quark mean-field (QMF) model to strangeness freedom to study the properties of hyperons ($Λ,Σ,Ξ$) in infinite baryon matter and neutron star properties. The baryon-scalar meson couplings in the QMF model are determined self-consistently from the quark level, where the quark confinement is taken into account in terms of a scalar-vector harmonic oscillator potential. The strength of such confinement potential for $u,d$ quarks is constrained by the properties of finite nuclei, while the one for $s$ quark is limited by the properties of nuclei with a $Λ$ hyperon. These two strengths are not same, which represents the SU(3) symmetry breaking effectively in the QMF model. Also, we use an enhanced $Σ$ coupling with the vector meson, and both $Σ$ and $Ξ$ hyperon potentials can be properly described in the model. The effects of the SU(3) symmetry breaking on the neutron star structures are then studied. We find that the SU(3) breaking shifts earlier the hyperon onset density and makes hyperons more abundant in the star, in comparisons with the results of the SU(3) symmetry case. However, it does not affect much the star's maximum mass. The maximum masses are found to be $1.62 M_{\odot}$ with hyperons and $1.88 M_{\odot}$ without hyperons. The present neutron star model is shown to have limitations on explaining the recently measured heavy pulsar.

3PF2 pairing in high-density neutron matter

The onset of the 3PF2 superfluid phase in high-density neutron matter is studied within the BCS framework with two and three body forces. Owing to the strong correlations the energy gap is so sizeably quenched as to demand to reconsider the role of superfluidity in neutron-star phenomena.

Correlation between muonic levels and nuclear structure in muonic atoms

A method that deals with the nucleons and the muon unitedly is employed to investigate the muonic lead, with which the correlation between the muon and nucleus can be studied distinctly. A "kink" appears in the muonic isotope shift at a neutron magic number where the nuclear shell structure plays a key role. This behavior may have very important implications for the experimentally probing the shell structure of the nuclei far away from the $β$-stable line. We investigate the variations of the nuclear structure due to the interaction with the muon in the muonic atom and find that the nuclear structure remains basically unaltered. Therefore, the muon is a clean and reliable probe for studying the nuclear structure. In addition, a correction that the muon-induced slight change in the proton density distribution in turn shifts the muonic levels is investigated. This correction to muonic level is as important as the Lamb shift and high order vacuum polarization correction, but is larger than anomalous magnetic moment and electron shielding correction.

Effects of tensor interaction on pseudospin energy splitting and shell correction

In the framework of a Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach combined with BCS method, the role of the tensor force on the pseudospin energy splitting for tin isotope chain is investigated. The tensor force turns out to obviously affect the pseudospin energy splitting of the spin-unsaturated nuclei. Since the tensor force shifts the single-particle levels, it modifies the single-particle level density and the shell correction energy thereof. The influence of the tensor interaction on shell correction energy is considerable according to our analysis taking a magic nucleus $^{132}$Sn as well as a superheavy nucleus $^{298}114$ as examples. This modification of the shell correction energy due to the tensor component affects the stability of the superheavy nuclei.

Transport parameters in neutron stars from in-medium NN cross sections

We present a numerical study of shear viscosity and thermal conductivity of symmetric nuclear matter, pure neutron matter and $β$-stable nuclear matter, in the framework of the Brueckner theory. The calculation of in-medium cross sections and nucleon effective masses is performed with a consistent two and three body interaction. The investigation covers a wide baryon density range as requested in the applications to neutron stars. The results for the transport coefficients in $β$-stable nuclear matter are used to make preliminary predictions on the damping time scales of non radial modes in neutron stars.

Temperature dependence of single-particle properties in nuclear matter

The single-nucleon potential in hot nuclear matter is investigated in the framework of the Brueckner theory by adopting the realistic Argonne V18 or Nijmegen 93 two-body nucleon-nucleon interaction supplemented by a microscopic three-body force. The rearrangement contribution to the single-particle potential induced by the ground state correlations is calculated in terms of the hole-line expansion of the mass operator and provides a significant repulsive contribution in the low-momentum region around and below the Fermi surface. Increasing temperature leads to a reduction of the effect, while increasing density makes it become stronger. The three-body force suppresses somewhat the ground state correlations due to its strong short-range repulsion, increasing with density. Inclusion of the three-body force contribution results in a quite different temperature dependence of the single-particle potential at high enough densities as compared to that adopting the pure two-body force. The effects of three-body force and ground state correlations on the nucleon effective mass are also discussed.

Isospin Dependence of 1S0 Proton and Neutron Superfluidity in Asymmetric Nuclear Matter

We investigate the $^1S_0$ neutron and proton superfluidity in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. We have concentrated on the isospin dependence of the pairing gaps and the effect of a microscopic three-body force. It is found that as the isospin asymmetry goes higher, the neutron $^1S_0$ superfluid phase shrinks gradually to a smaller density domain, while the proton one extends rapidly to a much wider density domain. The three-body force turns out to weaken the neutron $^1S_0$ superfluidity slightly, but it suppresses strongly the proton $^1S_0$ superfluidity at high densities in nuclear matter with large isospin asymmetry.

Microscopic three-body forces and kaon condensation in cold neutrino-trapped matter

We investigate the composition and the equation of state of the kaon condensed phase in neutrino-free and neutrino-trapped star matter within the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach with three-body forces. We find that neutrino trapping shifts the onset density of kaon condensation to a larger baryon density, and reduces considerably the kaon abundance. As a consequence, when kaons are allowed, the equation of state of neutrino-trapped star matter becomes stiffer than the one of neutrino free matter. The effects of different three-body forces are compared and discussed. Neutrino trapping turns out to weaken the role played by the symmetry energy in determining the composition of stellar matter, and thus reduces the difference between the results obtained by using different three-body forces.

Isospin splitting of the nucleon mean field

The isospin splitting of the nucleon mean field is derived from the Brueckner theory extended to asymmetric nuclear matter. The Argonne V18 has been adopted as bare interaction in combination with a microscopic three body force. The isospin splitting of the effective mass is determined from the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock self-energy: It is linear acording to the Lane ansatz and such that $m^*_n > m^*_p$ for neutron-rich matter. The symmetry potential is also determined and a comparison is made with the predictions of the Dirac-Brueckner approach and the phenomenological interactions. The theoretical predictions are also compared with the empirical parametrizations of neutron and proton optical-model potentials based on the experimental nucleon-nucleus scattering and the phenomenological ones adopted in transport-model simulations of heavy-ion collisions. The direct contribution of the rearrangement term due to three-body forces to the single particle potential and symmetry potential is discussed.

Effect of Three-body Interaction on Phase Transition of Hot Asymmetric Nuclear Matter

The properties and the isospin dependence of the liquid-gas phase transition in hot asymmetric nuclear matter have been investigated within the framework of the finite temperature Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach extended to include the contribution of a microscopic three-body force. A typical Van der Waals structure has been observed in the calculated isotherms (of pressure) for symmetric nuclear matter implying the presence of the liquid-gas phase transition. The critical temperature of the phase transition is calculated and its dependence on the proton-to-neutron ratio is discussed. It is shown that the three-body force gives a repulsive contribution to the nuclear equation of state and reduces appreciably the critical temperature and the mechanical instable region. At fixed temperature and density the pressure of asymmetric nuclear matter increases monotonically as a function of isospin asymmetry. In addition, it turns out that the domain of mechanical instability for hot asymmetric nuclear matter gradually shrinks with increasing asymmetry and temperature. We have compared our results with the predictions of other theoretical models especially the Dirac Brueckner approach. A possible explanation for the discrepancy between the values of the critical temperature predicted by the present non-relativistic Brueckner calculations including the three-body force and the relativistic Dirac-Brueckner method is given.

Hot Nuclear Matter Equation of State with a Three-body Force

The finite temperature Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach is extended by introducing a microscopic three-body force. In the framework of the extended model, the equation of state of hot asymmetric nuclear matter and its isospin dependence have been investigated. The critical temperature of liquid-gas phase transition for symmetric nuclear matter has been calculated and compared with other predictions. It turns out that the three-body force gives a repulsive contribution to the equation of state which is stronger at higher density and as a consequence reduces the critical temperature of liquid-gas phase transition. The calculated energy per nucleon of hot asymmetric nuclear matter is shown to satisfy a simple quadratic dependence on asymmetric parameter $β$ as in the zero-temperature case. The symmetry energy and its density dependence have been obtained and discussed. Our results show that the three-body force affects strongly the high-density behavior of the symmetry energy and makes the symmetry energy more sensitive to the variation of temperature. The temperature dependence and the isospin dependence of other physical quantities, such as the proton and neutron single particle potentials and effective masses are also studied. Due to the additional repulsion produced by the three-body force contribution, the proton and neutron single particle potentials are correspondingly enhanced as similar to the zero-temperature case.

Nuclear Three-body Force Effect on a Kaon Condensate in Neutron Star Matter

We explore the effects of a microscopic nuclear three-body force on the threshold baryon density for kaon condensation in chemical equilibrium neutron star matter and on the composition of the kaon condensed phase in the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach. Our results show that the nuclear three-body force affects strongly the high-density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy and consequently reduces considerably the critical density for kaon condensation provided that the proton strangeness content is not very large. The dependence of the threshold density on the symmetry energy becomes weaker as the proton strangeness content increases. The kaon condensed phase of neutron star matter turns out to be proton-rich instead of neutron-rich. The three-body force has an important influence on the composition of the kaon condensed phase. Inclusion of the three-body force contribution in the nuclear symmetry energy results in a significant reduction of the proton and kaon fractions in the kaon condensed phase which is more proton-rich in the case of no three-body force. Our results are compared to other theoretical predictions by adopting different models for the nuclear symmetry energy. The possible implications of our results for the neutron star structure are also briefly discussed.

1S0 Proton and Neutron Superfluidity in beta-stable Neutron Star Matter

We investigate the effect of a microscopic three-body force on the proton and neutron superfluidity in the $^1S_0$ channel in $β$-stable neutron star matter. It is found that the three-body force has only a small effect on the neutron $^1S_0$ pairing gap, but it suppresses strongly the proton $^1S_0$ superfluidity in $β$-stable neutron star matter.

Neutrino mean free path in neutron stars

The neutrino propagation in neutron stars is studied in the framework of the linear response method. The medium effects are treated in the non-relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach either in the mean-field approximation or in the RPA. The residual interaction is expressed in terms of the Landau parameters extracted from the equation of state of spin- and isospin-polarized nuclear matter. The Brueckner theory including three-body forces is used for determining the equation of state. Numerical predictions for the response function of nuclear matter in $β$-equilibrium and the neutrino mean free path are presented in a range of baryonic densities and temperatures. The main results are a dominance of the charge-exchange component over the scattering component and an enhancement of the neutrino mean free path induced by nuclear correlations.
