Black hole quasinormal modes using the asymptotic iteration method

In this article we show that the asymptotic iteration method (AIM) allows one to numerically find the quasinormal modes of Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild de Sitter (SdS) black holes. An added benefit of the method is that it can also be used to calculate the Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter (SAdS) quasinormal modes for the case of spin zero perturbations. We also discuss an improved version of the AIM, more suitable for numerical implementation.

Dynamical Casimir effect for TE and TM modes in a resonant cavity bisected by a plasma sheet

Parametric photon creation via the dynamical Casimir effect (DCE) is evaluated numerically, in a three-dimensional rectangular resonant cavity bisected by a semiconductor diaphragm (SD), which is irradiated by a pulsed laser with frequency of GHz order. The aim of this paper is to determine some of the optimum conditions required to detect DCE photons relevant to a novel experimental detection system. We expand upon the thin plasma sheet model [Crocce et al., Phys. Rev. A 70 033811 (2004)] to estimate the number of photons for both TE and TM modes at any given SD position. Numerical calculations are performed considering up to 51 inter-mode couplings by varying the SD location, driving period and laser power without any perturbations. It is found that the number of photons created for TE modes strongly depends on SD position, where the strongest enhancement occurs at the midpoint (not near the cavity wall); while TM modes have weak dependence on SD position. Another important finding is the fact that significant photon production for TM$_{111}$ modes still takes place at the midpoint even for a low laser power of 0.01 micro J/pulse, although the number of TE$_{111}$ photons decreases almost proportionately with laser power. We also find a relatively wide tuning range for both TE and TM modes that is correlated with the frequency variation of the instantaneous mode functions caused by the interaction between the cavity photons and conduction electrons in the SD excited by a pulsed laser.

Asymptotic iteration method for spheroidal harmonics of higher-dimensional Kerr-(A)dS black holes

In this work we calculate the angular eigenvalues of the $(n+4)$-dimensional {\it simply} rotating Kerr-(A)dS spheroidal harmonics using the Asymptotic Iteration Method (AIM). We make some comparisons between this method and that of the Continued Fraction Method (CFM) and use the latter to check our results. We also present analytic expressions for the small rotation limit up to $O(c^3)$ with the coefficient of each power up to $O(α^2)$, where $c=aω$ and $α=a^2 Λ$ ($a$ is the angular velocity, $ω$ the frequency and $Λ$ the cosmological constant).

Graviton emission from simply rotating Kerr-de Sitter black holes: Transverse traceless tensor graviton modes

In this article we present results for tensor graviton modes (in seven dimensions and greater, $n\geq 3$) for greybody factors of Kerr-dS black holes and for Hawking radiation from simply rotating (n+4)-dimensional Kerr black holes. Although there is some subtlety with defining the Hawking temperature of a Kerr-dS black hole, we present some preliminary results for emissions assuming the standard Hawking normalization and a Bousso-Hawking-like normalization.

Fermion evaporation of a black hole off a tense brane

Using the WKBJ approximation we obtain numerical plots of the power emission spectrum for the evaporation of massless bulk Dirac fermions from six dimensional black holes off a tense 3-brane with codimension two. We also present the multiplicity factors for eigenvalues of the deficit four sphere and show that these reduce to the usual case in the tenseless limit.

Fermion excitations of a tense brane black hole

By finding the spinor eigenvalues for a single deficit angle (d-2)-sphere, we derive the radial potential for fermions on a d-dimensional black hole background that is embedded on a codimension two brane with conical singularity, where the deficit angle is related to the brane tension. From this we obtain the quasi-normal mode spectrum for bulk fermions on such a background. As a byproduct of our method, this also gives a rigorous proof for integer spin fields on the deficit 2-sphere.

Bulk dominated fermion emission on a Schwarzschild background

Using the WKBJ approximation, and the Unruh method, we obtain semi-analytic expressions for the absorption probability (in all energy regimes) for Dirac fermions on a higher dimensional Schwarzschild background. We present an analytic expression relating the absorption probability to the absorption cross-section, and then use these results to plot the emission rates to third order in the WKBJ approximation. The set-up we use is sufficiently general such that it could also easily be applied to any spherically symmetric background in $d$-dimensions. Our results lead to the interesting conclusion that for $d>5$ bulk fermion emission dominates brane localised emission. This is an example contrary to the conjecture that black holes radiate mainly on the brane.

Casimir effect in rugby-ball type flux compactifications

As a continuation of the work in \cite{mns}, we discuss the Casimir effect for a massless bulk scalar field in a 4D toy model of a 6D warped flux compactification model,to stabilize the volume modulus. The one-loop effective potential for the volume modulus has a form similar to the Coleman-Weinberg potential. The stability of the volume modulus against quantum corrections is related to an appropriate heat kernel coefficient. However, to make any physical predictions after volume stabilization, knowledge of the derivative of the zeta function, $ζ'(0)$ (in a conformally related spacetime) is also required. By adding up the exact mass spectrum using zeta function regularization, we present a revised analysis of the effective potential. Finally, we discuss some physical implications, especially concerning the degree of the hierarchy between the fundamental energy scales on the branes. For a larger degree of warping our new results are very similar to the previous ones \cite{mns} and imply a larger hierarchy. In the non-warped (rugby-ball) limit the ratio tends to converge to the same value, independently of the bulk dilaton coupling.

Split fermion quasi-normal modes

In this paper we use the conformal properties of the spinor field to show how we can obtain the fermion quasi-normal modes for a higher dimensional Schwarzschild black hole. These modes are of interest in so called split fermion models, where quarks and leptons are required to exist on different branes in order to keep the proton stable. As has been previously shown, for brane localized fields, the larger the number of dimensions the faster the black hole damping rate. Moreover, we also present the analytic forms of the quasi-normal frequencies in both the large angular momentum and the large mode number limits.

Volume stabilization in a warped flux compactification model

We investigate the stability of the extra dimensions in a warped, codimension two braneworld that is based upon an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with a non-vanishing scalar field potential. The braneworld solution has two 3-branes, which are located at the positions of the conical singularities. For this type of brane solution the relative positions of the branes (the shape modulus) is determined via the tension-deficit relations, if the brane tensions are fixed. However, the volume of the extra dimensions (the volume modulus) is not fixed in the context of the classical theory, implying we should take quantum corrections into account. Hence, we discuss the one-loop effective potential of the volume modulus for a massless, minimally coupled scalar field.

Graviton emission from a higher-dimensional black hole

We discuss the graviton absorption probability (greybody factor) and the cross-section of a higher-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole (BH). We are motivated by the suggestion that a great many BHs may be produced at the LHC and bearing this fact in mind, for simplicity, we shall investigate the intermediate energy regime for a static Schwarzschild BH. That is, for $(2M)^{1/(n-1)}ω\sim 1$, where $M$ is the mass of the black hole and $ω$ is the energy of the emitted gravitons in $(2+n)$-dimensions. To find easily tractable solutions we work in the limit $l \gg 1$, where $l$ is the angular momentum quantum number of the graviton.

Quantum fluctuations on a thick de Sitter brane

We investigate quantum fluctuations on a de Sitter (dS) brane, which has its own thickness, in order to examine whether or not the finite thickness of the brane can act as a natural cut-off for the Kaluza-Klein (KK) spectrum. We calculate the amplitude of the KK modes and the bound state by using the zeta function method after a dimensional reduction. We show that the KK amplitude is finite for a given brane thickness and in the thin wall limit the standard surface divergent behavior is recovered. The strength of the divergence in the thin wall limit depends on the number of dimensions, e.g., logarithmic on a two dimensional brane and quadratic on a four dimensional brane. We also find that the amplitude of the bound state mode and KK modes depends on the choice of renormalization scale; and for fixed renormalization scales the bound state mode is insensitive to the brane thickness both for two and four-dimensional dS branes.

Electroweak inflation and reheating in the NMSSM

A low reheating temperature is now well motivated by the recently reconsidered gravitino problem, if we incorporate supergravity. In this article, we propose a model which naturally realizes a low reheating temperature. The model is based on the next to minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM) by identifying a singlet scalar field as the inflaton. This entertains the possibility that the inflaton may be detected at future colliders, such as the LHC.

Reheat Temperature and the Right-handed Neutrino Mass

We discuss the reheating temperature in the instant preheating scenario. In this scenario, at the last stage of inflation, the inflaton field first decays into another scalar field with an enormous number density via the instant preheating mechanism. Subsequently, the produced scalar field decays into normal matter accompanied by the usual reheating mechanism. As an inflationary model, we identify the inflaton as a field which gives rise to a mass for the right-handed (s)neutrino. One of the interesting consequences of the instant preheating mechanism is the fact that the reheating temperature is proportional to the mass of the decayed particle, {\it the right-handed sneutrino}, $T_R \propto M_R$. This is very different from the ordinary perturbative reheating scenario in which the reheating temperature is proportional to the mass of the inflaton.

Can thick braneworlds be self-consistent?

We discuss the backreaction of a massless, minimally coupled, quantized scalar field on a thick, two-dimensional de Sitter (dS) brane as an extension of our previous work. We show that a finite brane thickness naturally regularizes the backreaction on the brane. The quantum backreaction exhibits a quadratic divergence in the thin wall limit. We also give a theoretical bound on the brane thickness, in terms of the brane self-consistency of the quantum corrected Einstein equation, namely the requirement that the size of the backreaction should be smaller than that of the background stress-energy at the center of the brane. Finally, we discuss the brane self-consistency for the case of a four-dimensional dS brane.

Partition function for a singular background

We present a method for evaluating the partition function in a varying external field. Specifically, we look at the case of a non-interacting, charged, massive scalar field at finite temperature with an associated chemical potential in the background of a delta-function potential. Whilst we present a general method, valid at all temperatures, we only give the result for the leading order term in the high temperature limit. Although the derivative expansion breaks down for inhomogeneous backgrounds we are able to obtain the high temperature expansion, as well as an analytic expression for the zero point energy, by way of a different approximation scheme, which we call the {\it local Born approximation} (LBA).

Quantum Fluctuations for de Sitter Branes in Bulk AdS(5)

The vacuum expectation value of the square of the field fluctuations of a scalar field on a background consisting of {\it two} de Sitter branes embedded in an anti-de Sitter bulk are considered. We apply a dimensional reduction to obtain an effective lower dimensional de Sitter space equation of motion with associated Kaluza-Klein masses and canonical commutation relations. The case of a scalar field obeying a restricted class of mass and curvature couplings, including massless, conformal coupling as a special case, is considered. We find that the local behaviour of the quantum fluctuations suffers from surface divergences as we approach the brane, however, if the field is {\it constrained} to its value on the brane from the beginning then surface divergences disappear. The ratio of $<ϕ^2>$ between the Kaluza-Klein spectrum and the lowest eigenvalue mode is found to vanish in the limit that one of the branes goes to infinity.

Zeta Functions in Brane World Cosmology

We present a calculation of the zeta function and of the functional determinant for a Laplace-type differential operator, corresponding to a scalar field in a higher dimensional de Sitter brane background, which consists of a higher dimensional anti-de Sitter bulk spacetime bounded by a de Sitter section, representing a brane. Contrary to the existing examples, which all make use of conformal transformations, we evaluate the zeta function working directly with the higher dimensional wave operator. We also consider a generic mass term and coupling to curvature, generalizing previous results. The massless, conformally coupled case is obtained as a limit of the general result and compared with known calculations. In the limit of large anti-de Sitter radius, the zeta determinant for the ball is recovered in perfect agreement with known expressions, providing an interesting check of our result and an alternative way of obtaining the ball determinant.
