A study of elliptic gamma function and allies

We study analytic and arithmetic properties of the elliptic gamma function $$ \prod_{m,n=0}^\infty\frac{1-x^{-1}q^{m+1}p^{n+1}}{1-xq^mp^n}, \qquad |q|,|p|<1, $$ in the regime $p=q$; in particular, its connection with the elliptic dilogarithm and a formula of S. Bloch. We further extend the results to more general products by linking them to non-holomorphic Eistenstein series and, via some formulae of D. Zagier, to elliptic polylogarithms.

Many odd zeta values are irrational

Building upon ideas of the second and third authors, we prove that at least $2^{(1-\varepsilon)\frac{\log s}{\log\log s}}$ values of the Riemann zeta function at odd integers between 3 and $s$ are irrational, where $\varepsilon$ is any positive real number and $s$ is large enough in terms of $\varepsilon$. This lower bound is asymptotically larger than any power of $\log s$; it improves on the bound $\frac{1-\varepsilon}{1+\log2}\log s$ that follows from the Ball--Rivoal theorem. The proof is based on construction of several linear forms in odd zeta values with related coefficients.

One of the Odd Zeta Values from $ζ(5)$ to $ζ(25)$ Is Irrational. By Elementary Means

Available proofs of result of the type 'at least one of the odd zeta values $ζ(5),ζ(7),\dots,ζ(s)$ is irrational' make use of the saddle-point method or of linear independence criteria, or both. These two remarkable techniques are however counted as highly non-elementary, therefore leaving the partial irrationality result inaccessible to general mathematics audience in all its glory. Here we modify the original construction of linear forms in odd zeta values to produce, for the first time, an elementary proof of such a result - a proof whose technical ingredients are limited to the prime number theorem and Stirling's approximation formula for the factorial.

A magnetic double integral

In a recent study of how the output voltage of a Hall plate is affected by the shape of the plate and the size of its contacts, Udo Ausserlechner has come up with a remarkable double integral that can be viewed as a generalization of the classical elliptic "AGM" integral. Here we discuss transformation properties of the integral, which were experimentally observed by Ausserlechner, as well as its analytical and arithmetic features including connections with modular forms.

A note on odd zeta values

Using a new construction of rational linear forms in odd zeta values and the saddle point method, we prove the existence of at least two irrational numbers amongst the 33 odd zeta values $ζ$(5), $ζ$(7),. .. , $ζ$(69).

Ramanujan-type formulae for $1/π$: $q$-analogues

The hypergeometric formulae designed by Ramanujan more than a century ago for efficient approximation of $π$, Archimedes' constant, remain an attractive object of arithmetic study. In this note we discuss some $q$-analogues of Ramanujan-type evaluations and of related supercongruences.

A modular supercongruence for $_6F_5$: an Apéry-like story

We prove a supercongruence modulo $p^3$ between the $p$th Fourier coefficient of a weight 6 modular form and a truncated ${}_6F_5$-hypergeometric series. Novel ingredients in the proof are the comparison of two rational approximations to $ζ(3)$ to produce non-trivial harmonic sum identities and the reduction of the resulting congruences between harmonic sums via a congruence between the Apéry numbers and another Apéry-like sequence.

On a family of polynomials related to $ζ(2,1)=ζ(3)$

We give a new proof of the identity $ζ(\{2,1\}^l)=ζ(\{3\}^l)$ of the multiple zeta values, where $l=1,2,\dots$, using generating functions of the underlying generalized polylogarithms. In the course of study we arrive at (hypergeometric) polynomials satisfying 3-term recurrence relations, whose properties we examine and compare with analogous ones of polynomials originated from an (ex-)conjectural identity of Borwein, Bradley and Broadhurst.

Euler's factorial series and global relations

Using Padé approximations to the series $E(z)=\sum_{k=0}^\infty k!(-z)^k$, we address arithmetic and analytical questions related to its values in both $p$-adic and Archimedean valuations.

Hypergeometric modular equations

We record $$ \binom{42}2+\binom{23}2+\binom{13}2=1192 $$ functional identities that, apart from being amazingly amusing by themselves, find applications in derivation of Ramanujan-type formulas for $1/π$ and in computation of mathematical constants.

Holonomic alchemy and series for $1/π$

We adopt the "translation" as well as other techniques to express several identities conjectured by Z.-W. Sun in arXiv:1102.5649v47 by means of known formulas for $1/π$ involving Domb and other Apéry-like sequences.

Crouching AGM, Hidden Modularity

Special arithmetic series $f(x)=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}c_nx^n$, whose coefficients $c_n$ are normally given as certain binomial sums, satisfy "self-replicating" functional identities. For example, the equation $$\frac1{(1+4z)^2}f\biggl(\frac{z}{(1+4z)^3}\biggr)=\frac1{(1+2z)^2}f\biggl(\frac{z^2}{(1+2z)^3}\biggr)$$ generates a modular form $f(x)$ of weight 2 and level 7, when a related modular parametrization $x=x(τ)$ is properly chosen. In this note we investigate the potential of describing modular forms by such self-replicating equations as well as applications of the equations that do not make use of the modularity. In particular, we outline a new recipe of generating AGM-type algorithms for computing $π$ and other related constants. Finally, we indicate some possibilities to extend the functional equations to a two-variable setting.

A determinantal approach to irrationality

It is a classical fact that the irrationality of a number $ξ\in\mathbb R$ follows from the existence of a sequence $p_n/q_n$ with integral $p_n$ and $q_n$ such that $q_nξ-p_n\ne0$ for all $n$ and $q_nξ-p_n\to0$ as $n\to\infty$. In this note we give an extension of this criterion in the case when the sequence possesses an additional structure; in particular, the requirement $q_nξ-p_n\to0$ is weakened. Some applications are given including a new proof of the irrationality of $π$. Finally, we discuss analytical obstructions to extend the new irrationality criterion further and speculate about some mathematical constants whose irrationality is still to be established.

On the Mahler measure of hyperelliptic families

We prove Boyd's "unexpected coincidence" of the Mahler measures for two families of two-variate polynomials defining curves of genus 2. We further equate the same measures to the Mahler measures of polynomials $y^3-y+x^3-x+kxy$ whose zero loci define elliptic curves for $k\ne0,\pm3$.

On the irrationality of generalized $q$-logarithm

For integer $p$, $|p|>1$, and generic rational $x$ and $z$, we establish the irrationality of the series $$\ell_p(x,z)=x\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{z^n}{p^n-x}.$$ It is a symmetric ($\ell_p(x,z)=\ell_p(z,x)$) generalization of the $q$-logarithmic function ($x=1$ and $p=1/q$ where $|q|<1$), which in turn generalizes the $q$-harmonic series ($x=z=1$). Our proof makes use of the Hankel determinants built on the Padé approximations to $\ell_p(x,z)$.
