On a combinatorial problem of Asmus Schmidt

For any integer $r\ge2$, define a sequence of numbers $\{c_k^{(r)}\}_{k=0}^\infty$, independent of the parameter $n$, by $$ \sum_{k=0}^n{\binom nk}^r{\binom{n+k}k}^r =\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk\binom{n+k}kc_k^{(r)}, \qquad n=0,1,2,...c. $$ We prove that all the numbers $c_k^{(r)}$ are integers.

Binomial sums related to rational approximations to $ζ(4)$

For the solution $\{u_n\}_{n=0}^\infty$ to the polynomial recursion $(n+1)^5u_{n+1}-3(2n+1)(3n^2+3n+1)(15n^2+15n+4)u_n -3n^3(3n-1)(3n+1)u_{n-1}=0$, where $n=1,2,...$, with the initial data $u_0=1$, $u_1=12$, we prove that all $u_n$ are integers. The numbers $u_n$, $n=0,1,2,...$, are denominators of rational approximations to $ζ(4)$ (see math.NT/0201024). We use Andrews's generalization of Whipple's transformation of a terminating ${}_7F_6(1)$-series and the method from math.NT/0311114.

Euler's constant, q-logarithms, and formulas of Ramanujan and Gosper

The aim of the paper is to relate computational and arithmetic questions about Euler's constant $γ$ with properties of the values of the $q$-logarithm function, with natural choice of $q$. By these means, we generalize a classical formula for $γ$ due to Ramanujan, together with Vacca's and Gosper's series for $γ$, as well as deduce irrationality criteria and tests and new asymptotic formulas for computing Euler's constant. The main tools are Euler-type integrals and hypergeometric series.

An Apéry-like difference equation for Catalan's constant

Applying Zeilberger's algorithm of creative telescoping to a family of certain very-well-poised hypergeometric series involving linear forms in Catalan's constant with rational coefficients, we obtain a second-order difference equation for these forms and their coefficients. As a consequence we obtain a new way of fast calculation of Catalan's constant as well as a new continued-fraction expansion for it. Similar arguments can be put forward to indicate a second-order difference equation and a new continued fraction for $ζ(4)=π^4/90$, and we announce corresponding results at the end of this paper.

A few remarks on linear forms involving Catalan's constant

In the joint work of T.Rivoal and the author, a hypergeometric construction was proposed for studing arithmetic properties of the values of Dirichlet's beta function $β(s)$ at even positive integers. The construction gives some bonuses for Catalan's constant $G=β(2)$, such as a second-order Apery-like recursion and a permutation group in the sense of G.Rhin and C.Viola. Here we prove expected integrality properties of solutions to the above recursion as well as suggest a simpler (also second-order and Apery-like) one for $G$. We "enlarge" the permutation group of our previous (joint with T.Rivoal) work by showing that the total 120-permutation group for $ζ(2)$ (known thanks to G.Rhin and C.Viola) can be applied in arithmetic study of Catalan's constant. These considerations have computational meanings and do not allow us to prove the (presumed) irrationality of $G$. Finally, we suggest a conjecture yielding the irrationality property of numbers (e.g., of Catalan's constant) from existence of suitable second-order difference equations (recursions).

Diophantine problems for q-zeta values

A motivated q-extension of the values of the Riemann zeta function at positive integers is presented. Several irrationality and transcendence results as well as new general problems for these q-zeta values are stated.

A third-order Apery-like recursion for $ζ(5)$

In 1978, Apery has given sequences of rational approximations to $ζ(2)$ and $ζ(3)$ yielding the irrationality of each of these numbers. One of the key ingredient of Apery's proof are second-order difference equations with polynomial coefficients satisfied by numerators and denominators of the above approximations. Recently, a similar second-order difference equation for $ζ(4)$ has been discovered. The note contains a possible generalization of the above results for the number $ζ(5)$.

Arithmetic of linear forms involving odd zeta values

A general hypergeometric construction of linear forms in (odd) zeta values is presented. The construction allows to recover the records of Rhin and Viola for the irrationality measures of $ζ(2)$ and $ζ(3)$, as well as to explain Rivoal's "infinitely-many" result (math.NT/0008051) and to prove that at least one of the four numbers $ζ(5)$, $ζ(7)$, $ζ(9)$, and $ζ(11)$ is irrational.

Multiple-integral representations of very-well-poised hypergeometric series

A new multiple-integral representation of a general family of very-well-poised hypergeometric series is proved. Inspite of an analytic character of the result, it is motivated by the recent arithmetic progress for the values of the Riemann zeta function at odd integers. The multiple integrals are of Euler-type and can be viewed as a natural generalization of Beukers' integrals for $ζ(2)$ and $ζ(3)$.

An elementary proof of Apery's theorem

We present a new `elementary' proof of the irrationality of $ζ(3)$ based on some recent `hypergeometric' ideas of Yu.Nesterenko, T.Rivoal, and K.Ball, and on Zeilberger's algorithm of creative telescoping.

Irrationality of values of zeta-function

We present several results on the number of irrational and linear independent values among $ζ(s),ζ(s+2),...,ζ(s+2n)$, where $s>2$ is an odd integer and $n>0$ is an integer. The main tool in our proofs is a certain generalization of Rivoal's construction (math.NT/0008051, math.NT/0104221).

Number theory casting a look at the mirror

In this work, we give a purely analytic introduction to the phenomenon of mirror symmetry for quintic threefolds via classical hypergeometric functions and differential equations for them. Starting with a modular map and recent transcendence results for its values, we regard a mirror map $z(q)$ as a concept generalizing the modular one. We give an alternative approach demonstrating the existence of non-linear differential equations for the mirror map, and exploit both an elegant construction of Klemm-Lian-Roan-Yau and the Ax theorem to prove that the Yukawa coupling $K(q)$ does not satisfy any algebraic differential equation of order less than 7 with coefficients from $\mathbb{C}(q)$.

Cancellation of factorials

We study the arithmetic property which allows to sharpen number-theoretic estimates. Previous results on this property are, as a rule, quantitive. The application of our general qualitive theorems to generalized hypergeometric functions extends the set of irrational numbers which are the values of these functions.

On the transcendence degree of the differential field generated by Siegel modular forms

It is a classical fact that the elliptic modular functions satisfies an algebraic differential equation of order 3, and none of lower order. We show how this generalizes to Siegel modular functions of arbitrary degree. The key idea is that the partial differential equations they satisfy are governed by Gauss--Manin connections, whose monodromy groups are well-known. Modular theta functions provide a concrete interpretation of our result, and we study their differential properties in detail in the case of degree 2.
