Mixing rates and limit theorems for random intermittent maps

We study random transformations built from intermittent maps on the unit interval that share a common neutral fixed point. We focus mainly on random selections of Pomeu-Manneville-type maps $T_α$ using the full parameter range $0< α< \infty$, in general. We derive a number of results around a common theme that illustrates in detail how the constituent map that is fastest mixing (i.e.\ smallest $α$) combined with details of the randomizing process, determines the asymptotic properties of the random transformation. Our key result (Theorem 1.1) establishes sharp estimates on the position of return time intervals for the \emph{quenched} dynamics. The main applications of this estimate are to \textit{limit laws} (in particular, CLT and stable laws, depending on the parameters chosen in the range $0 < α< 1$) for the associated skew product; these are detailed in Theorem 3.2. Since our estimates in Theorem 1.1 also hold for $1 \leq α< \infty$ we study a piecewise affine version of our random transformations, prove existence of an infinite ($σ-$finite) invariant measure and study the corresponding correlation asymptotics. To the best of our knowledge, this latter kind of result is completely new in the setting of random transformations.

Linear response in the intermittent family: differentiation in a weighted $C^0$-norm

We provide a general framework to study differentiability of SRB measures for one dimensional non-uniformly expanding maps. Our technique is based on inducing the non-uniformly expanding system to a uniformly expanding one, and on showing how the linear response formula of the non-uniformly expanding system is inherited from the linear response formula of the induced one. We apply this general technique to interval maps with a neutral fixed point (Pomeau-Manneville maps) to prove differentiability of the corresponding SRB measure. Our work covers systems that admit a finite SRB measure and it also covers systems that admit an infinite SRB measure. In particular, we obtain a linear response formula for both finite and infinite SRB measures. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that contains a linear response result for infinite measure preserving systems.

On Transfer Operators and Maps with Random Holes

We study Markov interval maps with random holes. The holes are not necessarily elements of the Markov partition. Under a suitable, and physically relevant, assumption on the noise, we show that the transfer operator associated with the random open system can be reduced to a transfer operator associated with the closed deterministic system. Exploiting this fact, we show that the random open system admits a unique (meaningful) absolutely continuous conditionally stationary measure. Moreover, we prove the existence of a unique probability equilibrium measure supported on the survival set, and we study its Hausdorff dimension.

Decay of correlation for random intermittent maps

We study a class of random transformations built over finitely many intermittent maps sharing a common indifferent fixed point. Using a Young-tower technique, we show that the map with the fastest relaxation rate dominates the asymptotics. In particular, we prove that the rate of correlation decay for the annealed dynamics of the random map is the same as the sharp rate of correlation decay for the map with the fastest relaxation rate.

Pseudo-Orbits, Stationary Measures and Metastability

We study random perturbations of multidimensional piecewise expanding maps. We characterize absolutely continuous stationary measures (acsm) of randomly perturbed dynamical systems in terms of pseudo-orbits linking the ergodic components of absolutely invariant measures (acim) of the unperturbed system. We focus on those components, called least-elements, which attract pseudo-orbits. We show that each least element admits a neighbourhood which supports exactly one ergodic acsm of the random system. We use this result to identify random perturbations that exhibit a metastable behavior.

Rigorous pointwise approximations for invariant densities of nonuniformly expanding maps

We use an Ulam-type discretization scheme to provide pointwise approximations for invariant densities of interval maps with a neutral fixed point. We prove that the approximate invariant density converges pointwise to the true density at a rate $C^*\cdot\frac{\ln m}{m}$, where $C^*$ is a computable fixed constant and $m^{-1}$ is the mesh size of the discretization.

Escape Rates Formulae and Metastability for Randomly perturbed maps

We provide escape rates formulae for piecewise expanding interval maps with `random holes'. Then we obtain rigorous approximations of invariant densities of randomly perturbed metabstable interval maps. We show that our escape rates formulae can be used to approximate limits of invariant densities of randomly perturbed metastable systems.

Metastability of Certain Intermittent Maps

We study an intermittent map which has exactly two ergodic invariant densities. The densities are supported on two subintervals with a common boundary point. Due to certain perturbations, leakage of mass through subsets, called holes, of the initially invariant subintervals occurs and forces the subsystems to merge into one system that has exactly one invariant density. We prove that the invariant density of the perturbed system converges in the $L^1$-norm to a particular convex combination of the invariant densities of the intermittent map. In particular, we show that the ratio of the weights in the combination equals to the limit of the ratio of the measures of the holes.

Invariant densities and escape rates: Rigorous and computable approximations in the $L^{\infty}$-norm

In this article we study a piecewise linear discretization schemes for transfer operators (Perron-Frobenius operators) associated with interval maps. We show how these can be used to provide rigorous {\bf pointwise} approximations for invariant densities of Markov interval maps. We also derive the order of convergence of the approximate invariant density to the real one in the $L^{\infty}$-norm. The outcome of this paper complements rigorous results on $L^1$ approximations of invariant densities \cite{KMY} and recent results on the formulae of escape rates of open dynamical systems \cite{KL2}. We implement our computations on two examples (one rigorous and one non-rigorous) to illustrate the feasibility and efficiency of our schemes.

SRB Measures For Certain Markov Processes

We study Markov processes generated by iterated function systems (IFS). The constituent maps of the IFS are monotonic transformations of the interval. We first obtain an upper bound on the number of SRB (Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen) measures for the IFS. Then, when all the constituent maps have common fixed points at 0 and 1, theorems are given to analyze properties of the ergodic invariant measures $δ_0$ and $δ_1$. In particular, sufficient conditions for $δ_0$ and/or $δ_1$ to be, or not to be, SRB measures are given. We apply some of our results to asset market games.

Quasi-Invariant measures, escape rates and the effect of the hole

Let $T$ be a piecewise expanding interval map and $T_H$ be an abstract perturbation of $T$ into an interval map with a hole. Given a number $\ell$, $0<\ell<1$, we compute an upper-bound on the size of a hole needed for the existence of an absolutely continuous conditionally invariant measure (accim) with escape rate not greater than $-\ln(1-\ell)$. The two main ingredients of our approach are Ulam's method and an abstract perturbation result of Keller and Liverani.

Growth-optimal investments and numeraire portfolios under transaction costs: An analysis based on the von Neumann-Gale model

The aim of this work is to extend the capital growth theory developed by Kelly, Breiman, Cover and others to asset market models with transaction costs. We define a natural generalization of the notion of a numeraire portfolio proposed by Long and show how such portfolios can be used for constructing growth-optimal investment strategies. The analysis is based on the classical von Neumann-Gale model of economic dynamics, a stochastic version of which we use as a framework for the modelling of financial markets with frictions.

Rapid paths in von Neumann-Gale dynamical systems

The paper examines random dynamical systems related to the classical von Neumann and Gale models of economic growth. Such systems are defined in terms of multivalued operators in spaces of random vectors, possessing certain properties of convexity and homogeneity. A central role in the theory of von Neumann-Gale dynamics is played by a special class of paths called rapid (they maximize properly defined growth rates). Up to now the theory lacked quite satisfactory results on the existence of such paths. This work provides a general existence theorem holding under assumptions analogous to the standard deterministic ones. The result solves a problem that remained open for more than three decades.
