A 3D-Schroedinger operator under magnetic steps with semiclassical applications

We define a Schrödinger operator on the half-space with a discontinuous magnetic field having a piecewise-constant strength and a uniform direction. Motivated by applications in the theory of superconductivity, we study the infimum of the spectrum of the operator. We give sufficient conditions on the strength and the direction of the magnetic field such that the aforementioned infimum is an eigenvalue of a reduced model operator on the half-plane. We use the Schrödinger operator on the half-space to study a new semiclassical problem in bounded domains of the space, considering a magnetic Neumann Laplacian with a piecewise-constant magnetic field. We then make precise the localization of the semiclassical ground state near specific points at the discontinuity jump of the magnetic field.

Semi-classical eigenvalue estimates under magnetic steps (Former title: Hearing the shape of a magnetic edge in the semiclassical limit)

We establish accurate eigenvalue asymptotics and, as a by-product, sharp estimates of the splitting between two consecutive eigenvalues, for the Dirichlet magnetic Laplacian with a non-uniform magnetic field having a jump discontinuity along a smooth curve. The asymptotics hold in the semiclassical limit which also corresponds to a large magnetic field limit, and is valid under a geometric assumption on the curvature of the discontinuity curve.

Lowest energy band function for magnetic steps

We study the Schrödinger operator in the plane with a step magnetic field function. The bottom of its spectrum is described by the infimum of the lowest eigenvalue band function, for which we establish the existence and uniqueness of the non-degenerate minimum. We discuss the curvature effects on the localization properties of magnetic ground states, among other applications.

Magnetic steps on the threshold of the normal state

Superconductivity in the presence of a step magnetic field has been recently the focus of many works. This contribution examines the behavior of a two-dimensional superconducting domain, when superconductivity is lost in the whole domain except near the intersection points of the discontinuity edge and the boundary. The problem involves its own effective energy. We provide local estimates of the minimizers in neighbourhoods of the intersection points. Consequently, we introduce new critical fields marking the loss of superconductivity in the vicinity of these points. The study is modelled by the Ginzburg--Landau theory, and large Ginzburg--Landau parameters are considered.

The breakdown of superconductivity in the presence of magnetic steps

Many earlier works were devoted to the study of the breakdown of superconductivity in type-II superconducting bounded planar domains, submitted to smooth magnetic fields. In the present contribution, we consider a new situation where the applied magnetic field is piecewise-constant, and the discontinuity jump occurs along a smooth curve meeting the boundary transversely. To handle this situation, we perform a detailed spectral analysis of a new effective model. Consequently, we establish the monotonicity of the transition from a superconducting to a normal state. Moreover, we determine the location of superconductivity in the sample just before it disappears completely. Interestingly, the study shows similarities with the case of corner domains subjected to constant fields.

The distribution of superconductivity near a magnetic barrier

We consider the Ginzburg-Landau functional, defined on a two-dimensional simply connected domain with smooth boundary, in the situation when the applied magnetic field is piecewise constant with a jump discontinuity along a smooth curve. In the regime of large Ginzburg-Landau parameter and strong magnetic field, we study the concentration of minimizing configurations along this discontinuity.

The influence of magnetic steps on bulk superconductivity

We study the distribution of bulk superconductivity in presence of an applied magnetic field, supposed to be a step function, modeled by the Ginzburg-Landau theory. Our results are valid for the minimizers of the two-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau functional with a large Ginzburg-Landau parameter and with an applied magnetic field of intensity comparable with the Ginzburg-Landau parameter.
