Improved Measurement of the Rossiter-McLaughlin Effect in the Exoplanetary System HD 17156

We present an improved measurement of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for the exoplanetary system HD 17156, based on radial-velocity data gathered with the Subaru 8.2m telescope throughout the planetary transit of UT 2008 November 7. The data allow for a precise and independent determination of the projected spin-orbit angle of this system: $λ= 10.0^{\circ} \pm 5.1^{\circ}$. This result supersedes the previous claim of $λ= 62^{\circ} \pm 25^{\circ}$ by Narita et al., which was based on lower-precision data with poor statistics. Thus the stellar spin and planetary orbital axes of the HD 17156 system are likely to be well-aligned, despite the planet's large orbital eccentricity suggesting a history of strong dynamical interactions.

BD +44 493: A Ninth Magnitude Messenger from the Early Universe; Carbon Enhanced and Beryllium Poor

We present a 1D LTE chemical abundance analysis of the very bright (V=9.1) Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) star BD +44 493, based on high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra obtained with Subaru/HDS. The star is shown to be a subgiant with an extremely low iron abundance ([Fe/H]=-3.7), while it is rich in C ([C/Fe]=+1.3) and O ([O/Fe]=+1.6). Although astronomers have been searching for extremely metal-poor stars for decades, this is the first star found with [Fe/H]<-3.5 and an apparent magnitude V<12. Based on its low abundances of neutron-capture elements (e.g., [Ba/Fe]=-0.59), BD +44 493 is classified as a "CEMP-no" star. Its abundance pattern implies that a first-generation faint supernova is the most likely origin of its carbon excess, while scenarios related to mass loss from rapidly-rotating massive stars or mass transfer from an AGB companion star are not favored. From a high-quality spectrum in the near-UV region, we set an very low upper limit on this star's beryllium abundance (A(Be)=log(Be/H)+12<-2.0), which indicates that the decreasing trend of Be abundances with lower [Fe/H] still holds at [Fe/H]<-3.5. This is the first attempt to measure a Be abundance for a CEMP star, and demonstrates that high C and O abundances do not necessarily imply high Be abundances.

Lithium Abundances of Extremely Metal-Poor Turn-off Stars

We have determined Li abundances for eleven metal-poor turn-off stars, among which eight have [Fe/H]<-3, based on LTE analyses of high-resolution spectra obtained with the HDS on the Subaru telescope. The Li abundances for four of these eight stars are determined for the first time by this study. Effective temperatures are determined by a profile analysis of H-alpha and H-beta. While seven stars have Li abundances as high as the Spite Plateau value, the remaining four objects with [Fe/H] <-3 have A(Li)=log(Li/H)+12 ~< 2.0, confirming the existence of extremely metal-poor turn-off stars having low Li abundances, as reported by previous work. The average of the Li abundances for stars with [Fe/H]<-3 is lower by 0.2 dex than that of the stars with higher metallicity. No clear constraint on the metallicity dependence or scatter of the Li abundances is derived from our measurements for the stars with [Fe/H]<-3. Correlations of the Li abundance with effective temperatures, with abundances of Na, Mg and Sr, and with the kinematical properties are investigated, but no clear correlation is seen in the extremely metal-poor star sample.

Measurement of the Spin-Orbit Angle of Exoplanet HAT-P-1b

We present new spectroscopic and photometric observations of the HAT-P-1 planetary system. Spectra obtained during three transits exhibit the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect, allowing us to measure the angle between the sky projections of the stellar spin axis and orbit normal, λ= 3.7 +/- 2.1 degrees. The small value of λfor this and other systems suggests that the dominant planet migration mechanism preserves spin-orbit alignment. Using two new transit light curves, we refine the transit ephemeris and reduce the uncertainty in the orbital period by an order of magnitude. We find a upper limit on the orbital eccentricity of 0.067, with 99% confidence, by combining our new radial-velocity measurements with those obtained previously.

HE 1327-2326, an unevolved star with [Fe/H]<-5.0. II. New 3D-1D corrected abundances from a VLT/UVES spectrum

We present a new abundance analysis of HE 1327-2326, the currently most iron-poor star, based on observational data obtained with VLT/UVES. We correct the 1D LTE abundances for 3D effects to provide an abundance pattern that supersedes previous works, and should be used to observationally test current models of the chemical yields of the first-generation SNe. Apart from confirming the 1D LTE abundances found in previous studies before accounting for 3D effects, we make use of a novel technique to apply the 3D-1D corrections for CNO which are a function of excitation potential and line strength for the molecular lines that comprise the observable CH, NH, and OH features. We find that the fit to the NH band at 3360 A is greatly improved due to the application of the 3D-1D corrections. This may indicate that 3D effects are actually observable in this star. We also report the first detection of several weak Ni lines. The cosmologically important element Li is still not detected; the new Li upper limit is extremely low, A(Li)<0.62, and in stark contrast with results not only from WMAP but also from other metal-poor stars. We also discuss how the new corrected abundance pattern of HE 1327-2326 is being reproduced by individual and integrated yields of SNe.

Evidence for a companion to BM Gem, a silicate carbon star

Balmer and Paschen continuum emission as well as Balmer series lines of P Cygni-type profile from H_gamma through H_23 are revealed in the violet spectra of BM Gem, a carbon star associated with an oxygen-rich circumstellar shell (`silicate carbon star') observed with the high dispersion spectrograph (HDS) on the Subaru telescope. The blue-shifted absorption in the Balmer lines indicates the presence of an outflow, the line of sight velocity of which is at least 400 km s^-1, which is the highest outflow velocity observed to date in a carbon star. We argue that the observed unusual features in BM Gem are strong evidence for the presence of a companion, which should form an accretion disk that gives rise to both an ionized gas region and a high velocity, variable outflow. The estimated luminosity of ~0.2 (0.03-0.6) L_sun for the ionized gas can be maintained by a mass accretion rate to a dwarf companion of ~10^-8 M_sun yr^-1, while ~10^-10 M_sun yr^-1 is sufficient for accretion to a white dwarf companion. These accretion rates are feasible for some detached binary configurations on the basis of the Bond-Hoyle type accretion process. We concluded that the carbon star BM Gem is in a detached binary system with a companion of low mass and low luminosity. However, we are unable to determine whether this companion object is a dwarf or a white dwarf. The upper limits for binary separation are 210 AU and 930 AU for a dwarf and a white dwarf, respectively. We also note that the observed features of BM Gem mimic those of Mira (omi Cet), which may suggest actual similarities in their binary configurations and circumstellar structures.

Enrichment of lead (Pb) in the Galactic halo

We have determined lead (Pb) abundances for twelve red giants having [Fe/H] between -2.1 and -1.3, and its upper-limits for two lower metallicity objects, as well as the abundances of lanthanum (La) and europium (Eu). The averages of [Pb/Fe] and [Pb/Eu] are -0.3 and -0.6, respectively, and no clear increase of these ratios with increasing metallicity is found. The [La/Eu] values are only slightly higher than that of the r-process component in solar-system material. Combining the previous studies for globular clusters, these results suggest little contribution of the s-process to Pb of the field stars studied here, supporting the estimate of Pb production by the r-process from the solar-system abundances.

Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor Stars. III. Main-Sequence Turn-Off Stars from the SDSS/SEGUE Sample

The chemical compositions of seven Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) turn-off stars are determined from high-resolution spectroscopy. Five of them are selected from the SDSS/SEGUE sample of metal-poor stars. The effective temperatures of these objects are all higher than 6000 K, while their metallicities, parametrized by [Fe/H], are all below -2. Six of our program objects exhibit high abundance ratios of barium ([Ba/H]> +1), suggesting large contributions of the products of former AGB companions via mass transfer across binary systems. Combining our results with previous studies provides a total of 20 CEMP main-sequence turn-off stars for which the abundances of carbon and at least some neutron-capture elements are determined. Inspection of the [C/H] ratios for this sample of CEMP turn-off stars show that they are generally higher than those of CEMP giants; their dispersion in this ratio is also smaller. We take these results to indicate that the carbon-enhanced material provided from the companion AGB star is preserved at the surface of turn-off stars with no significant dilution. In contrast, a large dispersion in the observed [Ba/H] is found for the sample of CEMP turn-off stars, suggesting that the efficiency of the s-process in very metal-poor AGB stars may differ greatly from star to star. Four of the six stars from the SDSS/SEGUE sample exhibit kinematics that are associated with membership in the outer-halo population, a remarkably high fraction.

A Technique for Detecting Starlight Scattered from Transiting Extrasolar Planets with Application to HD 209458b

We present a new technique for detecting scattered starlight from transiting, close-orbiting extrasolar giant planets (CEGPs) that has the virtues of simplicity, robustness, linearity, and model-independence. Given a series of stellar spectra obtained over various phases of the planetary orbit, the goal is to measure the strength of the component scattered by the planet relative to the component coming directly from the star. We use two complementary strategies, both of which rely on the predictable Doppler shifts of both components and on combining the results from many spectral lines and many exposures. In the first strategy, we identify segments of the stellar spectrum that are free of direct absorption lines and add them after Doppler-shifting into the planetary frame. In the second strategy, we compare the distribution of equivalent-width ratios of the scattered and direct components. Both strategies are calibrated with a ``null test'' in which scrambled Doppler shifts are applied to the spectral segments. As an illustrative test case, we apply our technique to spectra of HD 209458 taken when the planet was near opposition (with orbital phases ranging from 11 to 34$\arcdeg$, where 0$\arcdeg$ is at opposition), finding that the planet-to-star flux ratio is $(1.4 \pm 2.9)\times10^{-4}$ in the wavelength range 554$-$681 nm. This corresponds to a geometric albedo of $0.8 \pm 1.6$, assuming the phase function of a Lambert sphere. Although the result is not statistically significant, the achieved sensitivity and relatively small volume of data upon which it is based are very encouraging for future ground-based spectroscopic studies of scattered light from transiting CEGP systems.

Measurement of the Rossiter--McLaughlin Effect in the Transiting Exoplanetary System TrES-1

We report a measurement of the Rossiter--McLaughlin effect in the transiting extrasolar planetary system TrES-1, via simultaneous spectroscopic and photometric observations with the Subaru and MAGNUM telescopes. By modeling the radial velocity anomaly that was observed during a transit, we determine the sky-projected angle between the stellar spin axis and the planetary orbital axis to be $λ= 30 \pm 21$ [deg]. This is the third case for which $λ$ has been measured in a transiting exoplanetary system, and the first demonstration that such measurements are possible for relatively faint host stars ($V \sim 12$, as compared to $V \sim 8$ for the other systems). We also derive a time of mid-transit, constraints on the eccentricity of the TrES-1b orbit ($e = 0.048 \pm 0.025$), and upper limits on the mass of the Trojan companions ($\lesssim$14 $M_{\oplus}$) at the 3$σ$ level.

Neutron-capture elements in the very metal-poor star HD88609: another st ar with excesses of light neutron-capture elements

We obtained a high resolution, high signal-to-noise UV-blue spectrum of the extremely metal-poor red giant HD88609 to determine the abundances of heavy elements. Nineteen neutron-capture elements are detected in the spectrum. Our analysis revealed that this object has large excesses of light neutron-capture elements while heavy neutron-capture elements are deficient. The abundance pattern shows a continuously decreasing trend, as a function of atomic number, from Sr to Yb, which is quite different from those in stars with excesses of r-process elements. Such an abundance pattern is very similar to that of HD122563 that was studied by our previous work. The results indicate that the abundance pattern found in the two stars could represent the pattern produced by the nucleosynthesis process that provided light neutron-capture elements in the very early Galaxy.

The first determination of the actinide Th abundance for a red giant of the Ursa Minor dwarf galaxy

The Thorium abundance for the red giant COS82 in the Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy is determined based on a high resolution spectrum. This is the first detection of actinides in an extra Galactic object. A detailed abundance pattern is determined for 12 other neutron-capture elements from the atomic number 39 to 68. These elements are significantly over-abundant with respect to other metals like Fe (> 1 dex) and their abundance pattern agrees well with those of the r-process-enhanced, very metal-poor stars known in the Galactic halo, while the metallicity of this object ([Fe/H] ~ -1.5) is much higher than these field stars ([Fe/H] ~ -3.0). The results indicate that the mechanism and the astrophysical site that are responsible for neutron-capture elements in COS82 is similar to that for field r-process-enhanced stars, while the condition of low mass star formation is quite different. An estimate of the age of this object based on the Th abundance ratio is discussed.

Spectroscopic Studies of Extremely Metal-Poor Stars with the Subaru High Dispersion Spectrograph. IV. The alpha-Element-Enhanced Metal-Poor Star BS16934-002

A detailed elemental abundance analysis has been carried out for the very metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-2.7) star BS16934-002, which was identified in our previous work as a star exhibiting large overabundances of Mg and Sc. A comparison of the abundance pattern of this star with that of the well-studied metal-poor star HD122563 indicates excesses of O, Na, Mg, Al, and Sc in BS16934-002. Of particular interest, no excess of C or N is found in this object, in contrast to CS22949-037 and CS29498-043, two previously known carbon-rich, extremely metal-poor stars with excesses of the alpha elements. No established nucleosynthesis model exists that explains the observed abundance pattern of BS16934-002. A supernova model, including mixing and fallback, assuming severe mass loss before explosion, is discussed as a candidate progenitor of BS16934-002.

Chemical Abundance Analysis of the Extremely Metal-Poor Star HE 1300+0157

We present a detailed chemical abundance analysis of HE 1300+0157, a subgiant with [Fe/H]=-3.9. From a high-resolution, high-S/N Subaru/HDS spectrum we find the star to be enriched in C ([C/Fe]_1D ~ +1.4) and O ([O/Fe]_1D ~ +1.8). With the exception of these species, HE 1300+0157 exhibits an elemental abundance pattern similar to that found in many other very and extremely metal-poor stars. The Li abundance is lower than the Spite-plateau value, in agreement with expectation for its evolutionary status. Of particular interest, no neutron-capture elements are detected in HE 1300+0157. This type of abundance pattern has been found by recent studies in several other metal-poor giants. We suggest that HE 1300+0157 is an unevolved example of this group of stars, which exhibit high C abundances together with low (or absent) abundances of neutron-capture elements. Several potential enrichment scenarios are presented. The low neutron-capture elements, including Sr, Ba, and Pb, suggests that the carbon excess observed in HE 1300+0157 is not due to mass transfer across a binary system. Such a scenario is applied to carbon-rich objects with excesses of s-process elements. The normal observed Li abundance supports this interpretation. Most likely, the high levels of C and O were produced prior to the birth of this star. It remains unclear whether a single hypernova is responsible for its overall chemical pattern, or whether one requires a superposition of yields from a massive Population III object and a normal Type II SN. These scenarios provide important information on the C production in the early Universe, and on the formation of C-rich stars in the early Galaxy.

The Origin of Carbon-Enhancement and Initial Mass Function of Extremely Metal-Poor Stars in the Galactic Halo

It is known that the carbon-enhanced, extremely metal-poor (CEMP) stars constitute a substantial proportion in the extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars of the Galactic Halo, by far larger than CH stars in Population II stars. We investigate their origin with taking into account an additional evolutionary path to the surface carbon-enrichment, triggered by hydrogen engulfment by the helium flash convection, in EMP stars of $[Fe/H] \lesssim -2.5$. This process is distinct from the third dredge-up operating in more metal-rich stars and also in EMP stars. In binary systems of EMP stars, the secondary stars become CEMP stars through mass transfer from the primary stars of low and intermediate masses, which have developed the surface carbon-enhancement. Our binary scenario can predict the variations in the abundances not only for carbon but also for nitrogen and s-process elements and reasonably explain the observed properties such as the stellar distributions with respect to the carbon abundances, the binary periods, and the evolutionary stages. Furthermore, from the observed frequencies of CEMP stars with and without s-process element enhancement, we demonstrate that the initial mass function of EMP stars need to give the mean mass $~10\msun$ under the reasonable assumptions on the distributions of orbital separations and mass ratio of binary components. This also indicates that the currently observed EMP stars were exclusively born as the secondary members of binaries, making up $\sim 10%$ remnants of EMP binary systems of mass $~10^8\msun$ in total; in addition to CEMP stars with white dwarf companions, a significant fraction of them have experienced supernova explosions of their companions. We discuss the implications of the present results in relation to the formation of Galactic halo.

Carbon Enhanced Metal-Poor Stars. I. Chemical Compositions of 26 Stars

The chemical compositions of 26 metal-poor stars that exhibit strong CH and/or C2 molecular bands are determined based on high-resolution spectroscopy. We define carbon-enhanced stars taking account of the carbon abundance ratio ([C/Fe]) and the evolutionary status. Twenty two stars in our sample satisfy our modified definition for Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) stars. In addition, we measure Na abundances for nine other carbon-enhanced stars for which abundances of other elements have been previously reported. Combining our new sample with the results of previous work, we investigate the abundance and evolutionary status of a total of 64 CEMP stars. In this paper, we separate the carbon-enhanced objects into Ba-rich and Ba-normal objects, and discuss on (1) the metallicity distributions, (2) the correlation between Ba and C (and C+N) abundances, (3) C abundance distributions, (3) the distributions of evolutionary status, and (5) Na abundances. The implications of these results on the origins of carbon in CEMP stars are discussed.

Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor Stars. Osmium and Iridium Abundances in the Neutron-Capture-Enhanced Subgiants CS31062-050 and LP625-44

We have investigated the abundances of heavy neutron-capture elements, including osmium (Os) and iridium (Ir), in the two Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) subgiants CS31062-050 and LP625-44. CS31062-050 is known to be a so-called CEMP-r/s star, which exhibits large excesses of s-process elements such as barium (Ba) and lead (Pb), as well as a significant enhancement of europium (Eu) that cannot be explained by conventional s-process production in Asymptotic Giant Branch star models. Our analysis of the high-resolution spectrum for this object has determined, for the first time, the abundances of Ir and Os, elements in the third peak of the r-process nucleosynthesis. They also exhibit significant excesses relative to the predictions of standard s-process calculations. These two elements are not detected in a similar-quality spectrum of LP625-44; the derived upper limits on their abundances are lower than the abundances in CS31062-050. We compare the observed abundance patterns of neutron-capture elements, including Os and Ir, in these two stars with recent model calculations of the s-process, and discuss possible interpretations.

A high-resolution spectral analysis of three carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars

We present results of an analysis of high-resolution spectra obtained with the Subaru Telescope High Dispersion Spectrograph, of two Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor stars, HE 1305+0007 and HE 1152-0355, and of the classical CH star HD 5223. All of these stars have relatively low effective temperatures (4000-4750 K) and high carbon abundances. The stellar atmospheric parameters indicate that they all have surface gravities consistent with a present location on the red-giant branch, and metallicities of [Fe/H] = -2.0 (HE 1305+0007, HD 5223) and [Fe/H]= -1.3 (HE 1152-0355). In addition to their large enhancements of carbon all three stars exhibit strong enhancements of the s-process elements relative to iron. HE 1305+0007 exhibits a large enhancement of the 3rd-peak s-process element lead, with [Pb/Fe] = +2.37, as well as a high abundance of the r-process element europium, [Eu/Fe] = +1.97. Thus, HE 1305+0007 joins the growing class of the so-called ``Lead Stars'', and also the class of objects that exhibit the presence of both r-process and s-process elements, the CEMP-r/s stars. The large enhancement of n-capture elements exhibited by HE 1152-0355 and HD 5223 are more consistent with the abundance patterns generally noticed in CH stars. The elemental abundance distributions observed in these stars are discussed in the light of existing theories of CH star formation, as well as the suggested formation scenarios of the CEMP-r/s group.
