Recursive Multilevel Decomposition of Pairwise Comparison Matrices: Algorithms and Inconsistency Diagnostics

Positive reciprocal pairwise comparison matrices are studied in entrywise logarithmic coordinates. Starting from the established consistent-residual split, we show that, for any fixed ordering, the residual matrix admits a unique top-down decomposition into mutually Frobenius-orthogonal layers. The construction applies to every positive reciprocal PC matrix of size $n \geq 3$, without additional spectral, sparsity, or genericity assumptions. An explicit active-matrix recursion and an equivalent cumulative parameter-extraction procedure have computational complexities $O(n^3)$ and $O(n^2)$, respectively. The squared Frobenius norms of the layers define an ordering-conditioned residual-energy profile that provides structural information complementary to the geometric-mean priorities and the Koczkodaj inconsistency indicator (Kii). Entrywise exponentiation yields an exact Hadamard-product reconstruction of the original reciprocal matrix. Numerical experiments confirm agreement between the two computational procedures, exact reconstruction, mutual orthogonality, and numerical accuracy to machine precision.

A note on the theoretical approach to Grassmannians and Plücker coordinates for additive skew-symmetric pairwise comparisons matrices

Symmetry and antisymmetry are fundamental concepts in many strict sciences. Pairwise comparisons (PC) matrices are fundamental tools for representing pairwise relations in decision making. In this theoretical study, we present a novel framework that embeds additive skew-symmetric PC matrices into the Grassmannian manifold $G(2, n)$. This framework leverages Plücker coordinates to provide a rigorous geometric interpretation of their structure. Our key result demonstrates that the algebraic consistency condition $a_{ij} + a_{jk} - a_{ki} = 0$ is equivalent to the geometric consistency of $2$-planes in $G(2, n)$, satisfying the Plücker relations. This connection reveals that the algebraic properties of PC matrices can be naturally understood through their geometric representation. Additionally, we extend this framework by interpreting PC matrices as differential $2$-forms, providing a new perspective on their consistency as a closedness condition. Our framework of linear algebra, differential geometry, and algebraic geometry, placing PC matrices in a broader mathematical context. Rather than proposing a practical alternative to existing methods, our study aims to offer a theoretical foundation for future research by exploring new insights into higher-dimensional geometry and the geometric modeling of pairwise comparisons.

Computationally efficient orthogonalization for pairwise comparisons method

Orthogonalization is one of few mathematical methods conforming to mathematical standards for approximation. Finding a consistent PC matrix of a given an inconsistent PC matrix is the main goal of a pairwise comparisons method. We introduce an orthogonalization for pairwise comparisons matrix based on a generalized Frobenius inner matrix product. The proposed theory is supported by numerous examples and visualizations.

A Geometric Framework for the Inconsistency in Pairwise Comparisons

In this study, a pairwise comparison matrix is generalized to the case when coefficients create Lie group $G$, non necessarily abelian. A necessary and sufficient criterion for pairwise comparisons matrices to be consistent is provided. Basic criteria for finding a nearest consistent pairwise comparisons matrix (extended to the class of group $G$) are proposed. A geometric interpretation of pairwise comparisons matrices in terms of connections to a simplex is given. Approximate reasoning is more effective when inconsistency in data is reduced.

RatingScaleReduction package: stepwise rating scale item reduction without predictability loss

This study presents an innovative method for reducing the number of rating scale items without predictability loss. The "area under the re- ceiver operator curve method" (AUC ROC) is used to implement in the RatingScaleReduction package posted on CRAN. Several cases have been used to illustrate how the stepwise method has reduced the number of rating scale items (variables).

Special cases of pairwise comparisons matrices represented by Toeplitz matrices

This study presents special cases of inconsistent pairwise comparisons PC matrices and analysis of their eigenvalue-based inconsistency index using mathematical methods. All studied special cases of PC matrices are Toeplitz matrices with only three different entries $1$, $x$, and $1/x$. A new type of circulant pairwise comparisons matrix has been introduced. Although this class of PC matrices may be perceived as restricted, it is general enough to cover numerous levels of eigenvalue-based inconsistency index from the lowest to the highest. Both exact mathematical expressions and estimations, where the exact expression was impossible to find, are provided

On the Convergence of the Pairwise Comparisons Inconsistency Reduction Process

This study investigates a powerful model, targeted to subjective assessments, based on pairwise comparisons. It provides a proof that a distance-based inconsistency reduction transforms an inconsistent pairwise comparisons (PC) matrix into a consistent PC matrix which is generated by the geometric means of rows of a given inconsistent PC matrix. The distance-based inconsistency indicator was defined in 1993 for pairwise comparisons. Its convergence was analyzed in 1996 (regretfully, with an incomplete proof; finally completed in 2010). However, there was no clear interpretation of the convergence limit which is of considerable importance for applications and this study does so.
