Resource Allocation and Sharing for UAV-Assisted Integrated TN-NTN with Multi-Connectivity

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with multi-connectivity (MC) capabilities efficiently and reliably transfer data between terrestrial networks (TNs) and non-terrestrial networks (NTNs). However, optimally sharing and allocating spectrum and power resources to maintain MC while ensuring reliable connectivity and optimal performance remains challenging in such networks. Channel variations induced by mobility in UAV networks, coupled with the varying quality of service (QoS) demands of heterogeneous devices, resource sharing, and fairness requirements in capacity distribution pose challenges to optimal resource allocation. Thus, this paper investigates resource allocation for QoS-constrained, MC-enabled, dynamic UAVs in an integrated TN-NTN environment with spectrum sharing and fairness considerations. To this end, we consider three types of links: UAV-to-radio base station (RBS), UAV-to-UAV, and UAV-to-HAP. We also assume two types of UAVs with diverse QoS requirements to reflect a practical scenario. Consequently, we propose two algorithms. The first algorithm maximizes the capacity of UAVs-RBS and UAVs-HAP links while ensuring the reliability of the UAV-UAV link. To achieve this, the algorithm maximizes the collective throughput of the UAVs by optimizing the sum capacity of all the UAV-RBS and UAV-HAP links. Next, to provide constant capacity to all links and ensure fairness, we propose another algorithm that maximizes the minimum capacity across all links. We validate the performance of both algorithms through simulation

Multilayer Non-Terrestrial Networks with Spectrum Access aided by Beyond-Diagonal RIS

In this work, we study a multi-user NTN in which a satellite serves as the primary network and a high-altitude platform station (HAPS) operates as the secondary network, acting as a cognitive radio. To reduce the cost, complexity, and power consumption of conventional antenna arrays, we equip the HAPS with a transmissive BD-RIS antenna front end. We then formulate a joint optimization problem for the BD-RIS phase response and the HAPS transmit power allocation under strict per-user interference temperature constraints. To tackle the resulting highly nonconvex problem, we propose an alternating-optimization framework: the power-allocation subproblem admits a closed-form, water-filling-type solution derived from the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions, while the BD-RIS configuration is refined via Riemannian manifold optimization. Simulation results show significant gains in data rate and interference suppression over diagonal RIS-assisted benchmarks, establishing BD-RIS as a promising enabler for future multilayer NTNs.

Satellite systems are expected to be a cornerstone of sixth-generation (6G) networks, providing ubiquitous coverage and supporting a wide range of services across communications, sensing, and positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT). Meeting these demands with current function-specific payload architectures is challenging in terms of cost, spectral use, and sustainability. This survey introduces the framework of multi-functional satellite systems (MFSS), which integrate two or more of these core services into a single payload, enabling resource sharing and functional synergy. A unified taxonomy is proposed, covering joint communications and sensing (JCAS), joint communications and PNT (JCAP), joint sensing and PNT (JSAP), and fully integrated joint communications, sensing, and PNT (JCSAP) systems. The paper reviews the state-of-the-art in each domain, examines existing payload architectures, and outlines cooperative, integrated, and joint design strategies. Key challenges, including waveform co-design, synchronization, interference mitigation, and resource management, are discussed, along with potential solutions and future research directions. By unifying diverse satellite capabilities within a single platform, MFSS can achieve higher spectral efficiency, reduced launch mass and cost, improved energy use, and enhanced service versatility, contributing to the development of sustainable and intelligent non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) for the 6G and beyond space era.

Joint Communications and Sensing for 6G Satellite Networks: Use Cases and Challenges

Satellite networks (SN) have long provided two fundamental services: global communications and Earth-oriented sensing, supporting applications from connectivity and navigation to disaster management and environmental monitoring. Yet, the accelerating demand for data and the emergence of new applications render the independent evolution of communication and sensing payloads increasingly unsustainable. Joint communications and sensing (JCAS) has emerged as a transformative paradigm, integrating both functions within a unified payload to enhance spectral efficiency, reduce operational costs, and minimize hardware redundancy. Beyond efficiency, this integration creates opportunities for novel services that are infeasible under separate payload designs. This paper motivates the role of JCAS in shaping the sixth-generation (6G) of satellite networks, explores a representative use case to assess its feasibility, and discusses key challenges that must be addressed to unlock its full potential. By highlighting these opportunities inherent to the space environment, we aim to stimulate the development of JCAS as a cornerstone technology for the next-generation space era

Effect of Phase Shift Errors on the Security of UAV-assisted STAR-RIS IoT Networks

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)-mounted simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) systems can provide full-dimensional coverage and flexible deployment opportunities in future 6G-enabled IoT networks. However, practical imperfections such as jittering and airflow of UAV could affect the phase shift of STAR-RIS, and consequently degrade network security. In this respect, this paper investigates the impact of phase shift errors on the secrecy performance of UAV-mounted STAR-RIS-assisted IoT systems. More specifically, we consider a UAV-mounted STAR-RIS-assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system where IoT devices are grouped into two groups: one group on each side of the STAR-RIS. The nodes in each group are considered as potential Malicious nodes for the ones on the other side. By modeling phase estimation errors using a von Mises distribution, analytical closed-form expressions for the ergodic secrecy rates under imperfect phase adjustment are derived. An optimization problem to maximize the weighted sum secrecy rate (WSSR) by optimizing the UAV placement is formulated and is then solved using a linear grid-based algorithm. Monte Carlo simulations are provided to validate the analytical derivations. The impact of phase estimation errors on system's secrecy performance is analyzed, providing critical insights for the practical realisation of STAR-RIS deployments for secure UAV-enabled IoT networks.

RL-based Adaptive Task Offloading in Mobile-Edge Computing for Future IoT Networks

The Internet of Things (IoT) has been increasingly used in our everyday lives as well as in numerous industrial applications. However, due to limitations in computing and power capabilities, IoT devices need to send their respective tasks to cloud service stations that are usually located at far distances. Having to transmit data far distances introduces challenges for services that require low latency such as industrial control in factories and plants as well as artificial intelligence assisted autonomous driving. To solve this issue, mobile edge computing (MEC) is deployed at the networks edge to reduce transmission time. In this regard, this study proposes a new offloading scheme for MEC-assisted ultra dense cellular networks using reinforcement learning (RL) techniques. The proposed scheme enables efficient resource allocation and dynamic offloading decisions based on varying network conditions and user demands. The RL algorithm learns from the networks historical data and adapts the offloading decisions to optimize the networks overall performance. Non-orthogonal multiple access is also adopted to improve resource utilization among the IoT devices. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms other stateof the art offloading algorithms in terms of energy efficiency, network throughput, and user satisfaction.

UAV-Assisted 5G Networks: Mobility-Aware 3D Trajectory Optimization and Resource Allocation for Dynamic Environments

This work proposes a framework for the robust design of UAV-assisted wireless networks that combine 3D trajectory optimization with user mobility prediction to address dynamic resource allocation challenges. We proposed a sparse second-order prediction model for real-time user tracking coupled with heuristic user clustering to balance service quality and computational complexity. The joint optimization problem is formulated to maximize the minimum rate. It is then decomposed into user association, 3D trajectory design, and resource allocation subproblems, which are solved iteratively via successive convex approximation (SCA). Extensive simulations demonstrate: (1) near-optimal performance with $ε\approx 0.67\%$ deviation from upper-bound solutions, (2) $16\%$ higher minimum rates for distant users compared to non-predictive 3D designs, and (3) $10-30\%$ faster outage mitigation than time-division benchmarks. The framework's adaptive speed control enables precise mobile user tracking while maintaining energy efficiency under constrained flight time. Results demonstrate superior robustness in edge-coverage scenarios, making it particularly suitable for $5G/6G$ networks.

However, ensuring security in ISAC systems remains a significant challenge, as both C\&S data are susceptible to adversarial threats. Physical Layer Security (PLS) has emerged as a key framework for mitigating these risks at the transmission level. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) further enhance PLS by dynamically shaping the radio environment to improve both secrecy along with C\&S performance. This survey begins with an overview of RIS, PLS, and ISAC fundamentals, establishing a foundation for understanding their integration. The state-of-the-art RIS-assisted PLS approaches in ISAC systems are then categorized into passive RIS and Active RIS (ARIS) paradigms. Passive RIS-based techniques focus on optimizing system throughput, covert communication, and Secrecy Rates (SRs), alongside improving sensing Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and Weighted Sum Rate (WSR) under various constraints. ARIS-based strategies extend these capabilities by actively optimizing beamforming to enhance secrecy and covert rates while ensuring robust sensing under communication and security constraints. By reviewing both passive and ARIS-based security frameworks, this survey highlights the transformative role of RIS in strengthening ISAC security. Furthermore, it explores key optimization methodologies, technical challenges, and future research directions for integrating RIS with PLS to ensure secure and efficient ISAC in next-generation 6G wireless networks.

Minimum Mean Squared Error Holographic Beamforming for Sum-Rate Maximization

This paper studies the problem of hybrid holographic beamforming for sum-rate maximization in a communication system assisted by a reconfigurable holographic surface. Existing methodologies predominantly rely on gradient-based or approximation techniques necessitating iterative optimization for each update of the holographic response, which imposes substantial computational overhead. To address these limitations, we establish a mathematical relationship between the mean squared error (MSE) criterion and the holographic response of the RHS to enable alternating optimization based on the minimum MSE (MMSE). Our analysis demonstrates that this relationship exhibits a quadratic dependency on each element of the holographic beamformer. Exploiting this property, we derive closed-form optimal expressions for updating the holographic beamforming weights. Our complexity analysis indicates that the proposed approach exhibits only linear complexity in terms of the RHS size, thus, ensuring scalability for large-scale deployments. The presented simulation results validate the effectiveness of our MMSE-based holographic approach, providing useful insights.

Enhancing Physical Layer Security in Cognitive Radio-Enabled NTNs with Beyond Diagonal RIS

Beyond diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (BD-RIS) have emerged as a transformative technology for enhancing wireless communication by intelligently manipulating the propagation environment. This paper explores the potential of BD-RIS in improving cognitive radio enabled multilayer non-terrestrial networks (NTNs). It is assumed that a high-altitude platform station (HAPS) has set up the primary network, while an uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) establishes the secondary network in the HAPS footprint. We formulate a joint optimization problem to maximize the secrecy rate by optimizing BD-RIS phase shifts and the secondary transmitter power allocation while controlling the interference temperature from the secondary network to the primary network. To solve this problem efficiently, we decouple the original problem into two sub-problems, which are solved iteratively by relying on alternating optimization. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of BD-RIS in cognitive radio-enabled multilayer NTNs to accommodate the secondary network while satisfying the constraints imposed from the primary network.

Secrecy Rate Maximization for 6G Reconfigurable Holographic Surfaces Assisted Systems

Reconfigurable holographic surfaces (RHS) have emerged as a transformative material technology, enabling dynamic control of electromagnetic waves to generate versatile holographic beam patterns. This paper addresses the problem of secrecy rate maximization for an RHS-assisted systems by joint designing the digital beamforming, artificial noise (AN), and the analog holographic beamforming. However, such a problem results to be non-convex and challenging. Therefore, to solve it, a novel alternating optimization algorithm based on the majorization-maximization (MM) framework for RHS-assisted systems is proposed, which rely on surrogate functions to facilitate efficient and reliable optimization. In the proposed approach, digital beamforming design ensures directed signal power toward the legitimate user while minimizing leakage to the unintended receiver. The AN generation method projects noise into the null space of the legitimate user channel, aligning it with the unintended receiver channel to degrade its signal quality. Finally, the holographic beamforming weights are optimized to refine the wavefronts for enhanced secrecy rate performance Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, demonstrating significant improvements in secrecy rate compared to the benchmark method.

Transmissive Beyond Diagonal RIS-Mounted LEO Communication for NOMA IoT Networks

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) technology has emerged as a transformative solution for enhancing satellite networks in next-generation wireless communication. The integration of RIS in satellite networks addresses critical challenges such as limited spectrum resources and high path loss, making it an ideal candidate for next-generation Internet of Things (IoT) networks. This paper provides a new framework based on transmissive beyond diagonal RIS (T-BD-RIS) mounted low earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). The NOMA power allocation at LEO and phase shift design at T-BD-RIS are optimized to maximize the system's spectral efficiency. The optimization problem is formulated as non-convex, which is first transformed using successive convex approximation and then divided into two problems. A closed-form solution is obtained for LEO satellite transmit power using KKT conditions, and a semi-definite relaxation approach is adopted for the T-BD-RIS phase shift design. Numerical results are obtained based on Monte Carlo simulations, which demonstrate the advantages of T-BD-RIS in satellite networks.

Holographic Joint Communications and Sensing With Cramer-Rao Bounds

Joint Communication and Sensing (JCAS) technology facilitates the seamless integration of communication and sensing functionalities within a unified framework, enhancing spectral efficiency, reducing hardware complexity, and enabling simultaneous data transmission and environmental perception. This paper explores the potential of holographic JCAS systems by leveraging reconfigurable holographic surfaces (RHS) to achieve high-resolution hybrid holographic beamforming while simultaneously sensing the environment. As the holographic transceivers are governed by arbitrary antenna spacing, we first derive exact Cramér-Rao Bounds (CRBs) for azimuth and elevation angles to rigorously characterize the three-dimensional (3D) sensing accuracy. To optimize the system performance, we propose a novel weighted multi-objective problem formulation that aims to simultaneously maximize the communication rate and minimize the CRBs. However, this formulation is highly non-convex due to the inverse dependence of the CRB on the optimization variables, making the solution extremely challenging. To address this, we propose a novel algorithmic framework based on the Majorization-Maximization (MM) principle, employing alternating optimization to efficiently solve the problem. The proposed method relies on the closed-form surrogate functions that majorize the original objective derived herein, enabling tractable optimization. Simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework under diverse system configurations, demonstrating its potential for next-generation holographic JCAS systems.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology has emerged as a promising enabler for next-generation wireless networks, offering a paradigm shift from passive environments to programmable radio wave propagation. Despite the potential of diagonal RIS (D-RIS), its limited wave manipulation capability restricts performance gains. In this paper, we investigate the burgeoning concept of beyond-diagonal RIS (BD-RIS), which incorporates non-diagonal elements in its scattering matrix to deliver more fine-grained control of electromagnetic wavefronts.
