Hierarchical Aggregation of Semantic Uncertainty in 3D Scene Graphs

Open-vocabulary 3D Scene Graphs (3DSGs) ground each object node in a vision-language embedding, yet they record every entry as equally certain, so a robot querying the map cannot tell which of its entries are unreliable. Estimators of semantic uncertainty could supply that distinction, but they require repeated sampling of a model, training, or held-out labels, none of which are available to a deployed system at query time. We present a framework that exploits the detector confidence and the embeddings a 3DSG already stores, converts them into a probability that an entry is correct, and propagates that probability through the containment hierarchy into a belief that a room contains a queried class. Four signals, each paired with the object-level error it indicates, are converted to probabilities at the logit scale learned by the vision-language model and combined in closed form with no additional perception or training. Objects sharing a detector and a vocabulary fail together, so the framework aggregates them in the fully correlated limit, where an aggregation under independence would treat one repeated error as repeated evidence. Evaluated on HM3DSem against a state-of-the-art 3DSG system, the framework improves object retrieval and lowers the error of the room-level assertions of the graph it reads.

Sliding Mode Control of Cardiac Rhythms in the Sinoatrial Node using Gaussian Process Regression

The Sinoatrial node (SA), also called natural pacemaker, is responsible to initiate the heart electrical activity, usually represented by electrocardiograms (ECGs). Abnormalities at the SA node can produce disordered heart rhythms or, in other words, cardiac arrhythmia that are visualized in the ECGs. The development of control strategies to stabilize the cardiac rhythm at the natural pacemaker can provide efficient ways to deal with and avoid some heart pathology. This paper investigates the use of a robust controller based on sliding modes for cardiac rhythms at the SA node in order to induce normal rhythms from pathological responses. Embedded into this controller, a Gaussian process regressor is utilized to predict and compensate modeling uncertainties and disturbances. A mathematical model that presents close agreement with experimental measurements is employed to represent the heart functioning. The adopted model comprises a network of oscillators formed by sinoatrial node, atrioventricular node (AV) and His-Purkinje complex (HP). Three nonlinear oscillators are employed to represent each one of the nodes that are connected by delayed couplings. The boudedness and convergence properties are investigated with a Lyapunov-like stability analysis. In order to evaluate the ability of the control law to deal with interpatient variability, the heart model is assumed to be not available to the controller designer, being used only in the simulator to assess the control performance. The results show that, by applying the proposed control scheme, abnormal rhythms can be avoided, turning the ECG closer to the expected normal behavior and preventing critical cardiac responses.

Intelligent Control for Path-Following of an Unmanned Mass-Centric Surface Vehicle

Addressing the control and maneuverability of surface vehicles with dynamically changing mass distributions is still an open problem. To solve the problem, we propose an intelligent controller for the path-following problem of a surface vehicle, which is controlled through mass distribution. This means that one of the control inputs is mass-centric. Specifically, we developed a Lyapunov-based nonlinear control scheme to enable an unmanned vessel to follow a smooth path according to a line-of-sight guidance law. The control inputs consist of the thrust force for forward motion and the position of a sliding mass that shifts the system's overall mass distribution. Artificial neural networks are employed to estimate unmodeled dynamics and external disturbances. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller in guiding the vessel along the desired path with minimal error.

Influence of Radial Basis Activation Functions on Intelligent Controller for Robotic Manipulators

This paper presents an intelligent control framework for trajectory tracking of robotic manipulators using radial basis function (RBF) neural networks for online disturbance estimation. The proposed control structure combines model-based nonlinear control with an adaptive neural approximator that compensates for parametric uncertainties, friction, and unmodeled dynamics. A Lyapunov-based adaptation law with projection guarantees boundedness of the closed-loop signals and convergence of the tracking error to a compact region. The primary objective of this work is to investigate how the choice of activation function within the RBF network influences transient behavior, steady-state accuracy, and control smoothness. The controller is implemented on a robotic manipulator. Experimental results demonstrate that although stability is preserved for all kernels, activation function selection significantly affects adaptation dynamics and practical tracking performance. These findings demonstrate that activation function selection acts as a structural design parameter in intelligent control, directly shaping adaptation dynamics and practical closed-loop performance.

Learning-based control of a single-DOF Aero system

This paper presents a learning-based control framework that integrates feedback linearization with reinforcement learning for the adaptive control of nonlinear mechatronic systems. The control law is derived using Lyapunov stability analysis, ensuring closed-loop stability in the presence of modeling uncertainties and external disturbances. Feedback linearization serves as the main control framework, while a reinforcement learning component estimates and compensates for unmodeled dynamics and disturbances online. The learning module is based on the REINFORCE-with-baseline algorithm, which improves learning efficiency by reducing the variance of policy-gradient estimates and enabling stable policy updates during adaptation. The proposed controller is evaluated on a single-degree-of-freedom rotor-based AERO system. Results from simulations demonstrate accurate trajectory tracking, fast adaptation, and strong robustness against parameter variations and external disturbances. Overall, the proposed approach combines the analytical guarantees of Lyapunov-based control with the adaptability of reinforcement learning, providing an effective solution for controlling nonlinear mechatronic systems.

Machine Learning-based Feedback Linearization Control of Quadrotor Subject to Unmodeled Dynamics

The control of agile quadrotors in dynamic and uncertain environments remains an open area of investigation to this day, particularly when the complete system dynamics are partially known or highly nonlinear. This work introduces a novel machine learning-based feedback-linearization control framework that employs a Gaussian Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network (NN) to model and compensate for unmodeled dynamics in real time. The proposed controller leverages the universal approximation capability of RBF networks to model nonlinearities and uncertainties. An online adaptation of the RBF NN updates the network's weights without prior training. The control law is derived using the Lyapunov stability theory, herein guaranteeing closed-loop stability and providing theoretical guarantee of asymptotic convergence of a trajectory tracking task. Gazebo simulation and real flight experiments are conducted using the Bitcraze's Crazyflie 2.1 quadrotor subject to unmodeled air drag, actuator dynamics, and external disturbance. Despite incomplete knowledge of prior dynamics and presence of external disturbance such as air drag and drift in state estimation, the proposed controller improves trajectory tracking with rapid convergence and reduction of position-norm and yaw orientation RMSE by more than $7.13\%$ and $49.27\%$ respectively compared to baseline feedback linearization controller.

Occupancy-Grounded Room Segmentation for Hierarchical 3D Scene Graphs

Hierarchical 3D scene graphs (3DSGs) for indoor robots organize geometric and semantic information across spatial scales, with a room layer that connects object-level perception to room-scale reasoning. Existing systems construct this layer from different spatial substrates (\eg{} place clusters, wall planes, or segmentation outputs), and as a result, room nodes are not evaluated on a common geometric criterion. We present an occupancy-grounded 3DSG pipeline in which room nodes are anchored to tracked free-space regions derived from occupancy decomposition, giving each room an explicit polygonal footprint. We evaluate the pipeline on 12 Matterport3D scenes by matching predicted room polygons to annotated room instances and compare against Hydra, a representative state-of-the-art place-connectivity baseline. The results show that occupancy-grounded anchoring recovers substantially more room instances than place-connectivity construction, at the cost of lower precision, and that wall-accurate room boundaries remain an open problem for both methods. Intelligent Control of Differential Drive Robots Subject to Unmodeled Dynamics with EKF-based State Estimation

Reliable control and state estimation of differential drive robots (DDR) operating in dynamic and uncertain environments remains a challenge, particularly when system dynamics are partially unknown and sensor measurements are prone to degradation. This work introduces a unified control and state estimation framework that combines a Lyapunov-based nonlinear controller and Adaptive Neural Networks (ANN) with Extended Kalman Filter (EKF)-based multi-sensor fusion. The proposed controller leverages the universal approximation property of neural networks to model unknown nonlinearities in real time. An online adaptation scheme updates the weights of the radial basis function (RBF), the architecture chosen for the ANN. The learned dynamics are integrated into a feedback linearization (FBL) control law, for which theoretical guarantees of closed-loop stability and asymptotic convergence in a trajectory-tracking task are established through a Lyapunov-like stability analysis. To ensure robust state estimation, the EKF fuses inertial measurement unit (IMU) and odometry from monocular, 2D-LiDAR and wheel encoders. The fused state estimate drives the intelligent controller, ensuring consistent performance even under drift, wheel slip, sensor noise and failure. Gazebo simulations and real-world experiments are done using DDR, demonstrating the effectiveness of the approach in terms of improved velocity tracking performance with reduction in linear and angular velocity errors up to $53.91\%$ and $29.0\%$ in comparison to the baseline FBL.

Benchmarking ML Approaches to UWB-Based Range-Only Posture Recognition for Human Robot-Interaction

Human pose estimation involves detecting and tracking the positions of various body parts using input data from sources such as images, videos, or motion and inertial sensors. This paper presents a novel approach to human pose estimation using machine learning algorithms to predict human posture and translate them into robot motion commands using ultra-wideband (UWB) nodes, as an alternative to motion sensors. The study utilizes five UWB sensors implemented on the human body to enable the classification of still poses and more robust posture recognition. This approach ensures effective posture recognition across a variety of subjects. These range measurements serve as input features for posture prediction models, which are implemented and compared for accuracy. For this purpose, machine learning algorithms including K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and deep Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural network are employed and compared in predicting corresponding postures. We demonstrate the proposed approach for real-time control of different mobile/aerial robots with inference implemented in a ROS 2 node. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the approach, showcasing successful prediction of human posture and corresponding robot movements with high accuracy.

Sliding mode control with a neural network compensation scheme for electro-hydraulic systems

Electro-hydraulic servo-systems are widely employed in industrial applications such as robotic manipulators, active suspensions, precision machine tools and aerospace systems. They provide many advantages over electric motors, including high force to weight ratio, fast response time and compact size. However, precise control of electro-hydraulic systems, due to their inherent nonlinear characteristics, cannot be easily obtained with conventional linear controllers. Most flow control valves can also exhibit some hard nonlinearities such as dead-zone due to valve spool overlap. This work describes the development of a sliding mode controller with a neural network compensation scheme for electro-hydraulic systems subject to an unknown dead-zone input. The boundedness and convergence properties of the closed-loop signals are proven using Lyapunov stability theory. Numerical results are presented in order to demonstrate the control system performance.

A fuzzy feedback linearization scheme applied to vibration control of a smart structure

Smart structures are usually designed with a stimulus-response mechanism to mimic the autoregulatory process of living systems. In this work, in order to simulate this natural and self-adjustable behavior, a fuzzy feedback linearization scheme is applied to a shape memory two-bar truss. This structural system exhibits both constitutive and geometrical nonlinearities presenting the snap-through behavior and chaotic dynamics. On this basis, a nonlinear controller is employed for vibration suppression in the chaotic smart truss. The control scheme is primarily based on feedback linearization and enhanced by a fuzzy inference system to cope with modeling inaccuracies and external disturbances. The overall control system performance is evaluated by means of numerical simulations, promoting vibration reduction and avoiding snap-through behavior.

An intelligent controller for underactuated mechanical systems

This paper presents an intelligent controller for uncertain underactuated nonlinear systems. The adopted approach is based on sliding mode control and enhanced by an artificial neural network to cope with modeling inaccuracies and external disturbances that can arise. The sliding surfaces are defined as a linear combination of both actuated and unactuated variables. A radial basis function is added to compensate the performance drop when, in order to avoid the chattering phenomenon, the sign function is substituted by a saturation function in the conventional sliding mode controller. An application of the proposed scheme is introduced for an inverted pendulum, in order to illustrate the controller design method, and numerical results are presented to demonstrate the improved performance of the resulting intelligent controller.
